Moyes drops big West Ham transfer hint

David Moyes has sent West Ham United fans an exciting transfer hint with less than two weeks to go until Deadline Day…

What’s the word?

The Hammers got the new Premier League season off to the perfect start as they defeated Newcastle United 4-2 at St James’ Park on Sunday afternoon, and after the game, the 58-year-old revealed his intentions for the remainder of the month.

In quotes relayed by football.london, Moyes said:

“I have 17-year-old centre-half Jamal [Baptiste] who I want involved in the first-team training but undoubtedly I am going to try and add to the squad.

“And I will be adding a defender and maybe other players as well but then if I don’t, then I will be happy if the players perform as well as they did today.”

Time running out!

It’s been a frustrating summer of business for the Irons, who surely not only want but need reinforcements right across the pitch going into this season, especially as they’ll soon be testing themselves in the Europa League too.

They are among the few sides to have not signed an outfield player, with their only senior addition being a backup goalkeeper in the form of Paris Saint-Germain shot-stopper Alphonse Areola, who was on loan to relegated Fulham last season.

It means that Moyes is still an injury to Michail Antonio away from disaster, whilst Fabian Balbuena is yet to be replaced – a reason why a centre-back seems to be the top priority – and there’s only the retiring Mark Noble to back up Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-the-latest-gossip-and-much-much-more” title= “Read the latest West Ham team and injury news, transfer rumours, gossip and much, much more!”]

As a result of their lack of activity since the end of the 2020/21 campaign, plenty of the West Ham faithful have vented their anger on social media – one example is seen in this reaction article from Football Transfer Tavern.

Largely, their annoyance has been targeted towards GSB. The owners are also soon to witness another protest against them, with fan group Hammers United planning a pre-game march for their clash with Manchester United next month.

That could gain further traction should the Irons head into September without making further additions.

However, it’s evident that Moyes knows he needs to bolster his squad and has made the fanbase publicly aware, so they should ultimately be excited by this news.

Whether it actually happens remains to be seen.

It’s also clear that the 58-year-old really does want a new centre-backm and with the Hammers being linked to the likes of Nikola Milenkovic, Kurt Zouma and Kortney Hause in recent weeks, many should be buzzing by the prospect of signing any of these names.

Time is running out but at least there is some hope for United heading into the final few weeks.

Tottenham urged to sell Winks

Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to sell Harry Winks by Noel Whelan after a transfer development.

The Lowdown: Exit talks

As per Football Insider, Winks is in talks to leave Spurs for a rival club in the Premier League.

Fabio Paratici reportedly told the central midfield player that the North London club will listen to offers for him earlier in the summer window, and as such it looks likely that he will leave before it shuts.

The Latest: Winks sale urged

Speaking to Football Insider, Whelan, a pundit who used to play as a striker for the likes of Leeds United and Coventry City, has urged Nuno Espirito Santo’s team to sell Winks, so that he can get more regular game time elsewhere:

“Yeah, I do. Not long ago he was in the England setup.

“A player with that sort of ability needs to be playing.

“If he is surplus to requirements, not going to be getting the game time and not needed by Nuno, I think the best scenario for both club and player is to get him out of the club.

“Let him persist and carry on with his career somewhere else. Let someone else get to benefit from his talent.”

The Verdict: Sell

Winks was limited to a mere 30 matches in total over all competitions across the 2020/21 season, managing just two goals and a further two assists (Transfermarkt).

The fact that he cannot cement a starting place in the side, added to the fact that he does not really offer that much of a threat in front of goal, it would be a wise idea for THFC to move him on.

Being English, 25 years of age and on £91,000-per-week, they could recoup a good amount of money for him, that could then be reinvested back into the squad.

Rangers fans laud Aribo vs Dundee Unietd

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left lauding the display of Joe Aribo in the first half of their away game at Dundee United at Saturday lunchtime.

The Nigeria international showed what he is all about with his tricky dancing feet, often beating his man out on the wing and creating some dangerous opportunities for Steven Gerrard’s men to score, most notably a chance for Alfredo Morelos – the Colombia star put it high and wide in the opening few minutes of the match.

He also got back to help out his defence on a number of occasions, winning the ball on the edge of his box before helping his team get up the pitch with his dribbling ability.

Aribo will be hoping that his second-half performance is as good as his first, with one eye on trying to keep his place in the starting eleven ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League qualifying second leg against Malmo at Ibrox.

These Gers supporters lauded Aribo’s performance on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that the 25-year-old is ‘scary’:

Celtic: Hoops eye Lee Buchanan swoop

Celtic are reportedly interested in a move for Derby County defender Lee Buchanan as their recruitment drive intensifies, according to the Daily Record.

The Lowdown: Ange Postecoglou eyes quality additions

Facing a large-scale rebuild at Parkhead this season after a disappointing 2020/21 campaign in Glasgow’s east end, new Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou will be looking to add quality where necessary to breed trophy-winning success.

Wasting no time in the transfer market, he has brought in five new players in key areas in need of strengthening as Kyogo Furuhashi, Carl Starfelt, Osaze Urhoghide, Liel Ababa and Liam Shaw have all joined over the summer [Transfermarkt].

The Celts now look set to pursue another target, according to latest developments.

The Latest: Celtic eye young sensation Buchanan

Eyeing reinforcements at left-back, Celtic are said to be keen on a move for 20-year-old Buchanan, as per the Daily Record.

His club Derby County are currently under a transfer embargo due to financial irregularities, potentially opening the door to a move away from Pride Park.

Nottingham Forest are reportedly the first club to test the waters with a bid for the 1.75m (5 foot 9) ace, although their bid of around £1.2m for his services has been rejected.

The Verdict: Buchanan would be an astute signing

Youthful, potentially available for a knockdown fee and already a regular first team operator, Buchanan would seem an astute potential signing by the Parkhead hierarchy.

In 2020/21, the Mansfield-born defender made 37 appearances for the Rams, registering three assists [Transfermarkt]. He also showed his bravery within the backline, winning a commendable 2.9 aerial duels per game across the season for Derby [WhoScored].

Once labelled a ‘top player’ by his manager, none other than Premier League legend Wayne Rooney, the England under-21 international has a bright future in the game which Celtic should capitalise upon by completing a deal for his signature.

In other news, one Hoops defender is in advanced talks over a Parkhead exit.

Howey: Ozan Kabak could be a shrewd buy for Leicester City

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Leicester City player Steve Howey believes Schalke defender Ozan Kabak could be a “shrewd buy” for his old side.

Kabak spent the second half of last season on loan at Liverpool amid the Reds’ defensive crisis, but they opted against signing the 21-year-old permanently this summer.

He is now being linked with a move to Leicester, with reports in Turkey previously suggesting that a deal was close.

For Howey, if the Foxes can get that wrapped up, then it could be some very smart business. He told FFC:

“I think he’s done alright. Leicester’s recruitment has been excellent, so obviously they must’ve done their sort of homework on him. He could be quite a shrewd buy.”

Kabak had one of the highest averages in Liverpool’s squad for aerial duels won per league game last season (2.9, per WhoScored), so that ability in the air is one thing he could bring to this Leicester team.

Ultimately, Kabak is a player with quality and potential, impressing those in and around the game such as Alan Shearer with some of his performances at Anfield.

If Leicester are indeed looking to strengthen their centre-back options this summer, then perhaps the Schalke man could be a good option.

All-round du Plessis takes Lancashire home

In a rather bland match at Trent Bridge, Lancashire beat Nottinghamshire comfortably by five wickets. Two fifties were scored, one on each side, and Francois du Plessis played a good all-round role for Lancashire. In windy conditions, Nottinghamshire won the toss and decided to bat. Their innings was built on a sound second-wicket partnership of 57 between Adam Voges (51) and Samit Patel (31 off 20 balls), that had them quite well placed at 69 for 2 when Patel fell in the tenth over. His best shot was a six over extra cover, into the strong wind, off Kyle Hogg.Chris Cairns began his innings with a thick edge for four but did not settle; he made 8 before he was caught at deep midwicket by fellow New Zealander Lou Vincent, who was in action again later in the over when a superb return from the deep ran out Chris Read for 2.Voges went to his 50 off 41 balls, but was out next ball, holing out to Andrew Flintoff on the midwicket boundary. Most of the runs after that came from Mark Ealham, who hammered 28 off 21 balls, including two sixes. With two overs to go, Notts had only 122 for 5 but Ealham took them past 150 before being caught at long-off from the final delivery. The fielder, again, was Vincent, but he juggled the ball three times before holding it – catching was not easy in such a wind and the fielders held some very good high ones.As so often in this competition, the most successful and economical bowlers were the spinners, Simon Marshall taking 3 for 27, including Ealham in his four overs, and du Plessis 1 for 13 in three. Again Flintoff did not bowl, and had not been expected to.Lancashire were all Mal Loye at the start. He swung Darren Pattinson over square leg for six in the second over and raced onwards, taking his team to 41 for 1 in five overs – the wicket being Vincent to a superb leg-side stumping for 4. But then Loye tried a reverse sweep and skied a catch to backward point, having made 32 off 23 balls. This slowed the scoring rate and after ten overs Lancashire were 70 for 2, one ahead of Notts at that stage. But Stuart Law and du Plessis produced the good partnership that the home team did not have, and they drew ahead again. When Law fell for 33, this brought in Flintoff. He showed understandable signs of nerves at first, being close to lbw and then run out off the first ball he faced. A thunderous straight drive for four will remain in the memory, but then he drove at Rob Ferley and was bowled for 13, off nine balls. All this time du Plessis had been chugging along at a good rate but somehow without great charisma – his 50 came off 33 balls, and his eventual unbeaten 57 contained seven fours and a six, yet somehow this valuable player does not quite capture the imagination. He did deservedly capture the Man-of-the-Match award, though. Lancashire were home with four balls to spare, but it was the expected result, without excitement. Andre Adams and Ealham took two wickets each, though Ferley was again the most economical with 1 for 23 off his four overs.

Mushfiqur fights in tame draw

Like their previous encounters, Bangladesh A’s third match on their England tour ended in a draw

ScorecardLike their previous encounters, Bangladesh A’s third match on their England tour ended in a draw. However, unlike the narrow escape against Warwickshire, the match at Leicester saw a much-improved batting display from the visitors. Bangladesh were dismissed for 330 in reply to Leicestershire’s 354 for 4 declared, and the hosts reached 63 for no loss in their second innings before close on the third day.Overnight on 215 for 3, Bangladesh lost four wickets for 50 runs, and it was left to wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim to hold the innings alongside the tail. Mushfiqur scored a brisk 60 not out off 82 deliveries, as Bangladesh played out a further 35.1 overs to the 62.4 they faced on Thursday. Nazmul Hossain hung around for 43 deliveries to score 11 in a 43-run stand for the eighth wicket. Jigar Naik took 3 for 70 for Leicestershire, while medium-pacers Tom Smith, Daniel Rowe and Sam Cliff scalped two wickets apiece.Tom New and Boeta Dippenaar then put on an unbroken 63 in 16 overs, New scoring 44 of those.Bangladesh head to Derby next for a three-day game starting July 21, before they face the South Africans at New Road, Worcester.

Courage under fire

One man stood above the negligence that led to the collapse of four wickets for eight runs just before tea that suddenly transformed a promising position into potential disaster

The new spirit of the West Indies team, so encouragingly confirmed over the first two and a half days of the most daunting challenge in international cricket, was, yet again, squandered by individual rashness. One man stood above the negligence that led to the collapse of four wickets for eight runs just before tea that suddenly transformed a promising position into potential disaster. One man restored West Indies’ hope and stimulated a sensational fightback in the closing overs of an engrossing day. No one has epitomised the new attitude more starkly than Shivnarine Chanderpaul whose fighting qualities have been so well established that he has long since been dubbed “Tiger”.Throughout the 13 years since he entered the West Indies team as a fragile 19-year-old, he has set an example for every batsman, present team-mates and those to follow, that an innings is to be treasured almost as dearly as life itself. It was a credo ignored by his early partners yesterday.Runako Morton has never played with more maturity than for his 67 but he wasted three hours of diligence with an unbecoming heave at Stuart MacGill, a waste compounded by the fact that it came minutes before lunch. Dwayne Bravo’s typically bold attack included three sixes in his 46 off 60 balls but was ended by an expansive drive off a wide ball from Brett Lee. Denesh Ramdin and Daren Sammy soon went to equally loose strokes. It left them to observe Chanderpaul’s courage and determination from beyond the boundary in awe and embarrassment. In the midst of the breakdown, he took a shattering blow on the back of the helmet from a bouncer from Lee.The contact reverberated around Sabina Park like a gunshot, a familiar sound in these parts. He instantly fell to the ground. The thousands in the stands watched in hushed anxiety. His wife, Amy, following the remarkable battle from the stands, shed emotional and understandable tears.Every man, woman and child rose to acclaim a sporting performance they will remember for as long as their memories do. Amy was not the only one shedding tears. So were big men, without a hint of embarrassment. For a few minutes, that seemed an eternity, Chanderpaul lay still on the pitch, immediately surrounded by concerned opponents of whom Lee was the first on the scene. Dr Akshai Mansingh, the assigned West Indies Cricket Board doctor, and team physio CJ Clark rushed to the middle. A stretcher appeared. The consensus among all except Chanderpaul was that he surely could not continue. He was on 86 and his faltering team needed him. It would take something more serious than a stunning blow to the cranium to extract him from the middle. He got to his feet, shook his head and satisfied the good doctor that he was ready to continue. Right away he was again middling the ball, nudging and pushing, manipulating the strike away from Fidel Edwards, the No. 10. A crowd shocked into silence by the upsetting events of the previous hour again rediscovered its voice.Every Chanderpaul run was cheered as if it was winning the match. So was every block by Edwards. When, finally, a straight drive off Stuart Clark carried Chanderpaul past his 18th Test hundred, every man, woman and child rose to acclaim a sporting performance they will remember for as long as their memories do. Amy was not the only one shedding tears. So were big men, without a hint of embarrassment.Nor were the tears, and cheers, over. Chanderpaul’s heroics had clearly inspired his team as much as it re-energised their fellow West Indians in the ground. As Edwards and Daren Powell swept aside Australia’s vaunted top order with their searing pace and swing in the final half hour, the depression of the recent years of decline seemed in the distant past. It might or might not be a fleeting wonder. But, my goodness, it was spine tingling.

Man Utd linked to Raphael Varane

Manchester United have potentially suffered a blow in their pursuit of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.

What’s the story?

Monday’s edition of Spanish publication Sport (as reported by Sport Witness), states that new Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti’s “first request” was to retain the 28-year-old after he had reportedly agreed terms with United over a potential move.

AS also claim that Varane is expecting a gesture from the former Everton manager, opening the door for him to stay at the Bernabeu. However, that would only be possible if the Spanish giants offer an improved contract.

Solskjaer may be gutted

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is believed to be in the market for a new centre-back this summer after Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have failed to prove their long-term credentials in recent years.

The likes of Pau Torres and Jules Kounde have been linked with a move to the Old Trafford outfit in recent weeks, but Madrid’s Varane appears to be the club’s prime target.

It’s easy to understand why the Red Devils have targeted the World Cup-winner after his impressive performances have caught the eye for several seasons now.

Former Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane lauded his fellow countryman back in February, praising his leadership qualities on the pitch.

“He’s won a lot and shown his ability to be a leader, help others and show what he’s capable of doing out on the pitch. He deserves the two goals in the last game and the character to give us the win,” said Zidane.

However, with just 12 months remaining on his current contract with the La Liga giants, it’s been heavily rumoured that a new chapter awaits Varane next season.

A £38.5 million fee has been muted for the France international, but Solksjaer may be left feeling gutted at the latest revelation regarding his key transfer target.

News that Ancelotti is keen to keep Varane at Madrid next season may concern the Norwegian tactician, and he’ll surely be hoping that the highly-rated centre-half doesn’t put pen to paper on a new deal and commit his future to the Spanish side.

West Ham: Fans react as Jayden Fevrier pens new deal

West Ham have recently announced that Jayden Fevrier has signed his first professional contract with the club.

The Hammers youngster has penned a one-year contract, with the option to extend this for an additional year if he can make a good impression in the upcoming 2021/22 campaign.

Speaking in an interview with West Ham TV, Fevrier expressed his delight at signing the new contract, and labelled it as a ‘big step’ in his career.

“I feel proud to have signed. Very proud. When I was young, this was all I wanted to do: work towards becoming a professional footballer. I feel like this is a big step in my career and I’m just happy that I’ve had this opportunity.”

Fevrier is yet to make a senior appearance for West Ham, but scored six goals and was on hand to provide four assists from his 21 appearances for the academy teams last term, which certainly makes for good reading for a full-back.

Plenty of West Ham supporters took to social media to react to the news of Fevrier’s new contract with the club.

Take a look at the best of the reaction from Twitter below, as supporters hailed the ‘good news’…
