Semenyo upgrade: Spurs pushing to sign £295k-p/w “superstar” for Frank

Tottenham Hotspur have struggled to perform in the Premier League this season, but dans will be pleased to know that the Lewis Family have given Thomas Frank their backing, and they are willing to spend in the January transfer window.

How can Tottenham get better this winter? What have we learned in the overtures of the window? There is pressure on the board to deliver after Daniel Levy was relieved of his duties at the end of last season, and there are numerous holes about Frank’s squad that need to be plugged.

Talk of a new deal for defender Micky van de Ven is rising, but there remains an emphasis on adding quality to the front of the Spurs ship. With James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke all long-term absentees, expect movement there.

Who Spurs are targeting this January

Antoine Semenyo has rejected Tottenham. Enquiries have been made, proposals have been assembled, but the Bournemouth forward has declined the Lilywhite advances, instead honing in on a mid-season transfer to Manchester City.

The Ghanaian has scored eight goals and supplied three assists in the Premier League this season, and he can play across the frontline. He would have been perfect for Tottenham, but this City-bound switch could yet work in the Lilywhites’ favour.

That’s because Tottenham spy an opportunity to sign Omar Marmoush from Pep Guardiola’s side. According to transfer insider Mark Brus – as relayed by Caught Offside – the 26-year-old is set to be replaced by Semenyo, and he could leave the Etihad Stadium in 2026.

Man City signed Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt for about £59m in January 2024, and after a strong start, he has fallen down the pecking order.

There is a real chance for Spurs to snap him up this winter, especially with ENIC getting ready to spend, with the north London side said to be ‘pushing to sign’ him.

Why Marmoush would be a "superstar" signing

Hailed as a “superstar” of a forward by Manchester City writer Radu Christian, Marmoush entered a sinking ship last season and proceeded to produce clinical performances in the Premier League, showcasing his class with a hat-trick against Newcastle United.

The Egyptian international scored 15 goals and supplied ten assists across 17 Bundesliga fixtures in 2024/25 before flying to England, and content creator Fiago regarded him as “one of the best strikers in the world” at that stage.

He has started only two Premier League games this season. This does not negate his brilliance, nor does it mean he is not among the cream of the division’s crop.

Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi against Man City's Omar Marmoush in the FA Cup final.

There’s a strong case to be made that the £295k-per-week talent is even better than Semenyo, and married up with a club who can help foster his talismanic qualities, he might even change that narrative before the current campaign is wrapped up.

After all, Marmoush might be on the fringes, but he still ranks among the top 5% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored per 90, as per FBref, bearing a comparable directness to Cherries star Semenyo.

It’s worth remembering that Marmoush arrived in a truly wretched point in Pep Guardiola’s Man City tenure, and he provided respite as the Spanish tactician worked toward steadying the ship. Now he has been cut adrift, and Tottenham must hand him a lifeline.

Last season, he proved his prolific and precise worth in the Premier League, maintaining creativity as he roved around the final third.

For a player who was awarded the 2024/25 Goal of the Season and is considered to be one of the most dangerous on the continent, he needs to be playing regular football, be it as a centre-forward, shadow striker or winger.

Tottenham can give him the platform he needs to remind everyone of his quality, and he might just let everyone know that he is a cut above someone like Semenyo.

Chelsea knocked back by target

Chelsea have failed in a second attempt to bring outgoing Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola to the club, according to Mirror Football.

The west London club do not have a permanent manager after dismissing Andre Villas Boas earlier in the season, with interim coach Roberto Di Matteo directing the team for the time being.

With Guardiola leaving the Catalan giants at the end of the campaign, Roman Abramovich has targeted the Blaugrana man as a top target to fill the Chelsea role.

The newspaper indicate that the Blues have offered the Spanish tactician a £12 million-a-year package, and promised him a bumper transfer kitty to add new players.

However, Guardiola is determined to take a year away from the game, and has reportedly refused the Premier League club’s advances.

The news is thought to be positive for Di Matteo, who now stands an excellent chance of being given the role in the Blues hotseat on a long-term basis.

Mikel Arteta shares Arsenal “hope” in “positive” injury update before Everton

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been speaking to the media ahead of his side’s first ever trip to the new Hill Dickinson Stadium to face Everton.

Arsenal face Everton amid tricky Premier League spell

The Gunners hold a slender two-point lead over Man City atop the Premier League table heading into their trip to Merseyside, though they could drop to second if Pep Guardiola’s men defeat West Ham earlier in the day.

Arsenal arrive following a dramatic 2-1 victory over Wolves, secured via Yerson Mosquera’s 94th-minute own goal, though the performance raised concerns about their current form.

That being said, history overwhelmingly favours the visitors in this fixture.

Arsenal have registered 102 league wins against Everton—more than against any other opponent in English top-flight history—while scoring a record 345 goals against the Toffees across both Premier League and First Division eras.

The north Londoners’ dominance spans generations, with Arsenal legend Ian Wright scoring 12 times against Everton during his career.

Recent meetings, however, tell a different story.

Last season’s encounters produced consecutive draws – a goalless stalemate at the Emirates followed by a 1-1 Goodison Park draw that damaged Arsenal’s title aspirations.

Everton’s resurgence under David Moyes complicates matters. The Toffees sit ninth after winning four of their last six games, though last weekend’s 2-0 defeat at Chelsea halted their momentum.

Moyes’ second spell has transformed Everton into genuine challengers for Europe, so they’ll be no easy customers this weekend.

The Gunners also face mounting injury concerns.

Ben White, Gabriel Magalhaes, Cristhian Mosquera, Kai Havertz and Max Dowman all remain sidelined, forcing Riccardo Calafiori’s return from suspension into an already stretched backline.

Arsenal star now 'set to be sidelined' until 2026 after fresh injury update

It’s bad to worse for Mikel Arteta.

ByEmilio Galantini

Arsenal have kept just one clean sheet across their last six Premier League games while conceding first in each of their last three away matches.

Their weakened backline was compounded by reports that White will be out until mid-January after pulling up with a hamstring injury against Wolves, but Arteta has shared a ‘positive’ update on the Englishman and Gabriel.

Mikel Arteta shares 'positive' injury update out of Arsenal

While both White and his Brazilian teammate remain out, Arteta told reporters in his pre-match press conference that he expects the former to heal pretty quickly.

Arteta also says that Arsenal are ‘positive’ about Gabriel’s condition, and he’s evolving really well.

After Everton, Arsenal have a slew of difficult fixtures to contend with.

Aston Villa and Liverpool are chief among the high-profile matches waiting for Arteta, and with City breathing down their necks, absolutely nothing but a win will do at Everton tomorrow.

Leeds XI, team injury news vs Southampton

Leeds United return to Premier League action on Saturday afternoon when they take on Southampton at Elland Road.

Jesse Marsch’s side went into the international break off the back of a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Wolves at Molineux, and since then they have been handed some further boosts on the injury front.

While the Whites did confirm that Patrick Bamford would be out for a minimum of six weeks due to injury, they can welcome the likes of Liam Cooper and Kalvin Phillips back into the fold after the duo remained as unused substitutes against Bruno Lage’s side a fortnight ago.

Marsch will have some big calls to make ahead of the match, and below is a look at how Leeds might line up when Southampton come to town.

In goal, Illan Meslier is likely to be fit for the game at Elland Road despite being forced off midway through the second half against Wolves following a collision with Raul Jimenez which led to the Mexico international’s sending off.

The back-line could see one important change, with club captain Cooper ready and available for Marsch to call upon and shore up a leaky Leeds defence which has already conceded 67 goals this season – the most of any side in the Premier League.

Cooper could come in for Pascal Struijk, with the £25k-a-week ace having struggled of late, perhaps no surprise given that he remains only 22 and is playing in a high-pressure environment like the one in which Leeds find themselves right now.

Another huge call for the Leeds manager to make is in midfield, where Phillips is no doubt pushing to make his first start of the calendar year. If Marsch does opt to go that way, then Mateusz Klich could be the man to drop out, with Adam Forshaw partnering the England international in the engine room and offering a bit more control on the ball.

Further forward, Bamford’s injury is likely to mean the likes of Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Dan James all keep their places from the game against Wolves, while Raphinha’s recovery from his virus means that he is likely to come straight back in too.

Leeds now in active talks to sign £9m forward who wants Premier League move

Leeds United are now in active talks to sign an attacking addition worth £9m in the January transfer window, according to recent reports.

Farke: Calvert-Lewin on course to become "Leeds United hero"

When Leeds signed Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free deal fresh from his Everton exit in the summer, there were plenty of doubters. Now, however, he very much looks like one of the most in-form players in the Premier League and has barely put a foot wrong in front of goal since Daniel Farke changed to a 3-5-2 system.

It wasn’t so long ago that reports were indicating the worst for Farke. Some even went as far to suggest that he would be out of a job if he lost against Chelsea and Liverpool. By the time those fixtures had passed, though, the German had overseen victory over the Blues and a dramatic draw against the Premier League champions.

Leeds’ turnaround has been as unexpected as it has been sensational and they’re now on a run of just one defeat in their last five Premier League games.

In that run, Calvert-Lewin has scored six goals and sparked deserved praise from Farke, who told reporters: “Right now he’s on the on a path to be a top-class player for Leeds United and also a Leeds United hero.

“But you know my attitude – I don’t like to speak about quality and top-class players just after a few weeks or a good couple couple of months.

“You have to show this with consistency over the whole season. But if he keeps going in this way and keeps delivering, then we would speak about an outstanding season.”

As things stand, the Whites are six points clear of the dropzone and perfectly placed to welcome vital January reinforcements, should they please.

Leeds now in active talks to sign Ruben Vargas

As reported by TeamTalk, Leeds are now in active talks to sign Ruben Vargas from Sevilla next month. The Swiss winger reportedly wants to complete a move to the Premier League and intermediaries have been in contact with Leeds, as well as Sunderland and Bournemouth.

Valued at around €10m (£9m) by Sevilla, the deal won’t come too cheap for those at Elland Road next month. Alas, it could be one worth chasing.

Aside from Calvert-Lewin, Farke’s forwards have struggled for goals throughout the campaign and it’s no secret that the former Everton forward has an extensive injury history. That makes an attacking addition crucial to the Whites’ survival chances.

Vargas could help the rest of Farke’s frontline kick on, having scored three goals and assisted another four in 12 La Liga games so far this season. Whilst his goalscoring record is not clinical, his creative spark would undoubtedly add another element to Leeds’ attack in the January transfer window.

Liverpool: Divock Origi keen to leave

Divock Origi has decided that he would like to leave Liverpool this summer, according to Football Insider.

The lowdown

The 26-year-old has been on Liverpool’s books for nearly eight years now, having signed from Lille back in 2014 for a fee of £10m.

He has gone on to play 171 times for the club, scoring 40 goals, including the clincher in the 2019 Champions League final against Tottenham Hotspur. However, Origi has been limited to just 533 minutes of action so far this season, equating to less than six full games.

That figure could improve if he features in this evening’s FA Cup clash against Nottingham Forest, which wouldn’t be a surprise on the basis that the majority of his 2021/22 game-time has come in the domestic cups.

The £60,000-per-week forward is now valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt.

The latest

The report from Football Insider stated that Origi has communicated his desire to move on to the Anfield hierarchy, having apparently grown ‘tired’ of his lack of playing time at the club. A ‘recruitment source’ has told the publication that the Belgian’s mind is made up at this point.

While Transfermarkt state that the 26-year-old’s contract expires this summer, Football Insider claimed that it runs until the summer of 2024, with the option for a further year. That will at least give the Reds the opportunity to cash in when the next transfer window opens.

The verdict

Given that he finds himself behind Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and January signing Luis Diaz in the pecking order, it’s no surprise that Origi wants to move on from Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp still thinks very highly of the 26-year-old, dubbing him a ‘monster’, but perhaps he might feel it is not right to stand in Origi’s way given the contribution he has made at Anfield.

He has scored or set up a goal every 66 minutes this season, underlining his ability, and there should be plenty of suitors. Indeed, Serie A leaders AC Milan are reportedly pushing to reach an agreement for a potential transfer for the Belgium international.

In other news, Liverpool have enquired about this ‘simply incredible’ midfielder

Spurs eye "unbelievable signing" in summer

Tottenham Hotspur could seal an “unbelievable signing” in Stefan de Vrij this summer transfer window.

That’s according to Eurosport transfer insider Dean Jones, who delivered an encouraging claim to GIVEMESPORT earlier this week.

Reports in Italy suggest that Spurs are leading the race to sign the Inter Milan colossus with the Serie A outfit tempted to offload the Netherlands international due to him entering the final year of his current contract.

It remains to be seen how much the 30-year-old would command, given his contractual situation and age, though Transfermarkt currently estimate his value to be in the region of £40.5m.

“If they can get De Vrij, I think that would be an unbelievable signing and would fit perfectly for where they want to go in the next couple of years,” the reliable reporter said.

De Vrij is a player that Lilywhites boss Antonio Conte knows very well as the defender played a crucial role in the Italian’s backline on their way to their first Scudetto in over a decade last season.

As part of the division’s most formidable defence, the 6 foot 2 powerhouse won an average of two aerial duels and 1.3 interceptions per game, on top of a seasonal passing accuracy of 93.8%, which is pretty outstanding, across 32 appearances, as per WhoScored.

He continues to be a rock-solid option under new management, averaging 2.5 aerial duels won, 1.4 tackles and a 92.1% passing accuracy per game in the Serie A this term.

By comparison, no Spurs player is winning more headers or making as many accurate passes, so evidently, he’s an instant upgrade on what Conte’s currently got at his disposal.

And given their poor defensive record in recent weeks, De Vrij could be everything he badly needs to improve such a crucial area of the pitch.

The 30-year-old Dutchman, once dubbed a “monster” by his former Lazio teammate Mauricio, would be the perfect summer addition for sporting director Fabio Paratici to land.

Their interest is evident, if not obvious based on Conte’s history with the colossus. He must be atop their priorities when the transfer window reopens this off-season.

AND in other news, 105 touches, 80% duels won: Spurs’ £36m-rated “monster” was Conte’s one shining light in United defeat…

Leeds: Phil Hay makes Jesse Marsch claim

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has revealed that recently appointed Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch will make some key changes on the training ground.

What’s the story?

Following Marcelo Bielsa’s sacking as manager last weekend following the Whites’ chastening loss against Spurs, Marsch was quickly brought in to replace him.

Now, all eyes are on what Marsch will look to change in order to turn things around at Elland Road, and Hay has now delivered an update that is sure to have fans nodding in agreement.

In a fan discussion for The Athletic, he detailed: “It’s highly likely too that Marsch will alter the training week and alter the training load, which might help to refresh the players.

“Bielsa pushed them to the limit and while that was a virtue for so long, I felt it was apparent in the past month that nothing was working as it needed to. There was a sense of a plan grinding to a halt.”

Fans will be raving

With Bielsa pushing his players to their absolute limit of what they could do, it was no surprise that the Whites just hit a bit of a brick wall.

The Argentine coaxed everything out of his small squad in his time as manager, and he was duly rewarded with Leeds’ promotion back to the Premier League and a superb ninth-place finish in their first season back in the top flight.

However, such an approach over a long period of time was always likely to have its drawbacks, and that came in the shape of their woeful injury record this year – the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford and Liam Cooper among others have all spent considerable time on the treatment table and have seen their team slip further and further down the table.

If Marsch can make that very important change of getting the balance between working his players hard in training and keeping them away from hitting burnout, then Leeds will be onto a winner.

The Whites can barely afford to lose any more players due to injuries from now until the end of the season, so Marsch’s reset on the training ground could be the big training ground change that gets the players going again.

Leeds fans might just be buzzing with this very important change.

Meanwhile, Marsch must unleash this Leeds academy talent…

Sunderland: Defoe once again let Neil down

With Alex Neil’s Sunderland heading into Saturday’s League One clash with Crewe Alexandra on a run of four games without defeat, the Black Cats manager would undoubtedly have been hoping for yet another positive result in order to keep the club’s promotion push alive.

While it was far from the most convincing performance against a team rooted to the bottom of the table, two late strikes from Daniel Neil and Patrick Roberts just about got the Mackems over the line against David Artell’s outfit, with Sunderland running out 2-0 winners at the Stadium of Light.

However, as is perhaps to be expected after such a hard-fought battle against a side who look certain to be playing their football in League Two next season, there were a number of below-par performances on display in the Black Cats’ ranks, with Lynden Gooch and Jermain Defoe two of the more notable disappointments.

While it is undeniable that Gooch was well of the pace against Crewe, it will undoubtedly have been the performance of Defoe which will have concerned Neil the most on Saturday afternoon, as the 39-year-old was completely anonymous in the Sunderland attack.

Two passes completed

Indeed, over the course of his 63 minutes on the pitch, the £360k-rated centre-forward was a complete passenger, having just seven touches of the ball – 26 fewer than Anthony Patterson between the Sunderland sticks – completing a mere two of his five attempted passes, taking no shots at the Crewe goal, ceding possession of the ball on five separate occasions and committing two fouls.

These returns saw the former England international earn a disappointing SofaScore match rating of just 6.5, ranking him as Neil’s second-worst starter on the day.

The veteran forward’s return to the Stadium of Light may have appeared a sentimental move at the time, but considering that Defoe is yet to find the net over his six League One outings since his January switch back to Wearside, exactly what the club thought the 39-year-old would bring to the current Sunderland side is something of a mystery.

Indeed, if the striker turned in this level of performance against a side who are rooted to the bottom of the table, there would not appear to be much hope for him firing the Black Cats to promotion this season against the teams around Sunderland in the play-off chase.

Wolves can find new Doherty in Birtwistle

Wolves currently find themselves in the midst of somewhat of a crisis at right-back with both Nelson Semedo and Ki-Jana Hoever sidelined with thigh injuries.

Luckily it appears as though the former could be back in contention after the international break whilst there is still no clear time frame on the latter’s return to action.

The injuries have meant that usual left-back Jonny Otto has had to play out of position at right-wing-back, with manager Bruno Lage not having a third senior option.

However, the West Midlands club does have an exciting young right-back coming through the ranks in 18-year-old Harry Birtwistle.

In the Pipeline

Birtwistle, who is of both British and Singaporean descent, signed his first professional contract back in October and has seriously impressed for Wolves’ U23s.

The right-back has made a combined 19 appearances for the U23s in both the Premier League 2 and EFL Trophy, scoring three goals and assisting twice with Wolves U23s currently sat third in the Premier League 2 Division 2 table.

Last season, the 18-year-old made 23 appearances for the U18s, impressing regularly and thus being handed a chance for the U23s, an opportunity that’s certainly been grabbed with both hands.

When Birtwistle signed his contract five months ago, Scott Sellars, Wolves technical director, said: “Looking forward, Harry needs to keep performing for the under-23s to a high standard and, when January comes, we will assess where he is in his journey; whether he needs to go out on loan or stay here and work with the under-23s and first-team.”

There’s certainly a pathway to the first-team for the young Singaporean, as well as his teammates in the U23s squad, but if injuries continue to be an issue for Wolves’ wing-backs, a first-team call-up may not be far away.

In Semedo, the West Midlands club have found a decent replacement for Matt Doherty, who left Molineux in 2020 to join Tottenham, having joined Wolves in 2010 as an 18-year-old.

The Irishman made 302 appearances for the club, overseeing two promotions as well as an FA Cup semi-final and an impressive run to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Doherty’s time at Wolves can be an example to Birtwistle as to how hard work can eventually lead to first-team opportunities, with the 18-year-old certainly being one of the West Midlands club’s brightest youth prospects. Described as “rapid” by Tim Spiers, the youngster has previously professed that he’s modelling himself on PSG wing-back Achraf Hakimi after stepping further back in his position on the pitch.

Supporters will always have a particularly soft spot for players in the first-team who have come through the youth ranks, with Luke Cundle being a recent example. There’s no reason as to why the same can’t apply for the right-back.
