Player suspicions allayed by Howard

Suspicions and doubts about the priorities of Cricket Australia’s management have filtered steadily out of the Australian dressing room

Suspicions and doubts about the priorities of Cricket Australia’s management have filtered steadily out of the Australian dressing room in the months since the appointment of Pat Howard as the team performance manager.A year ago the players readily questioned the priorities of CA and its desire to equip the team in the best possible way to win matches, to the point that management and selectors were banned from the dressing room during the ODI series against England. Now there is confidence that Howard and the coaches and selectors underneath him are committed to creating the best environment for success, and will not allow compromising decisions to be made.Causes for most anger in the ranks last summer included the 17-man squad named in advance of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane, and the refusal to release Michael Hussey and Doug Bollinger from the Twenty20 Champions League to prepare for a Test series in India.Such decisions fell within the remit of Michael Brown, the former general manager of cricket operations. Brown has left CA to oversee preparations for football’s 2015 Asian Cup, having been shifted to one side by Howard’s appointment. Paul Marsh, the chief executive of the Australian Cricketers Association, said the new structure had bred trust.”Under the new structure I’m reasonably confident that we won’t see another 17-man home Ashes squad announced just to keep the marketing people happy,” Marsh told ESPNcricinfo. “What the players want more than anything is a support structure that gives them the best possible chance to be successful. I don’t think the previous structure always allowed this but the new structure has an individual in Pat Howard who is accountable solely for team performance.”This has quickly created an environment where the players now feel that they have someone within CA senior management who is completely aligned to the goals of the team. The immediate impact of this is that players are starting to feel that the performance of the Australian cricket team is the high priority it should be for CA, whereas for the past few years this has rightly been questioned by the playing group.”Brown’s former role was unwieldy, covering an enormous amount of ground. It included the team, playing conditions, disciplinary measures, television rights and pay negotiations. He was seldom heard from by the players unless it was a call to inform them of their selection in the national team, or to notify them of a disciplinary breach.By contrast, Howard is a consistent presence around the team in his oversight role, sitting in on selection meetings and working closely with the head coach Mickey Arthur. His background as a former rugby international and coach has also given him a closer appreciation of high performance sport and its demands than Brown was able to call upon.Ultimately accountable for the performance of the team, Howard has said he is less an auditor than an agent of collaboration, between players, coaches, the national team and the states.”I don’t see myself as looking over their shoulder, I see myself as enabling that performance – we’ve all seen there’s a lot of talent there – and making sure that talent gets an opportunity is really important,” Howard said. “And I think most of the Australian public have seen, given a chance there are some guys who are really well and truly up to it or can grow into it.”That’s one of the great stories of the summer. Everyone, be they players or management, want the same thing, they want Australia to win, to perform, and they bring to the table lots of ideas about how we can improve. If we can bring that collaboration to the table then as a consequence we can only improve over the next couple of years.”The strong results seen so far against India have suggested that the team is benefiting from the change, and Hussey said there was an air of refreshment that had come from the knowledge that everyone was working towards the same goal.”Certainly winning breeds fun, but also there’s been so much change around the team, and I think for a while there everyone did get a bit insular, and it was a bit quieter, we were a bit more intense,” Hussey said. “But I think now the new coach has set in, the new selectors have stepped in, the communication’s been really good, everyone knows where they stand, they know what their roles are, and they know where they want to take the team in the future.”I think that gives everyone a lot of heart and a lot of confidence. And then you can really be yourself and really see the characters come through in the team.”

– Nosso time foi formado no início do ano e fomos campeões catarinense.

The race for World Cup places in 2014-15 will resume in February when the qualifying tournament gets back underway with Ireland, who currently lead the table with four wins from four, taking on Kenya in Mombasa.Scotland, who are also on eight points alongside Ireland, resume their campaign against UAE in March after ICC confirmed the latest set of Intercontinental one-day and Cup matches. The one-day matches, which form the qualifying tournament for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, run alongside the four-day Intercontinental Cup fixtures. There are four places available alongside the ten Full Members at the next World Cup following the u-turn from ICC after the decision had initially been taken to shrink the event down to ten nations.Currently the third and fourth qualifying spots are held by UAE and Netherlands with Afghanistan also on four points. Afghanistan and Netherlands go head-to-head at the end of March in Sharjah while Namibia and Canada, who are both yet to secure a victory, will aim to kick-start their chances in early April.Ireland are also in top spot in the Intercontinental Cup table, 17 points ahead of UAE, although all the teams have only played two matches so far.The other crucial cricket for Associate and Affiliate members early next year is the World Twenty20 qualifiers where two places are up for grabs at the full tournament in Sri Lanka next September.Full four-day fixtures

Solid Sangakkara fights for Sri Lanka

Australia’s chances of victory faded with the light around Pallekele on the fourth afternoon, as Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene settled in on a pitch offering little for the bowlers

The Report by Brydon Coverdale11-Sep-2011

Australia’s chances of victory faded with the light around Pallekele on the fourth afternoon, as Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene settled in on a pitch offering little for the bowlers. On a day that began with a pre-play declaration from Michael Clarke, when Australia led by 237, the Sri Lanka batsmen put up their firmest resistance of the series, and went to stumps with a deficit of just 14.Most importantly, they also had eight wickets in hand when bad light forced another early finish in a match dogged by rain and gloom. It meant that Australia needed a string of wickets on the fifth morning to give themselves a chance of taking a 2-0 series lead, while Sri Lanka’s goal was to overtake Australia and bat themselves into an unbeatable position. They could hardly have had two better men at the crease. Sangakkara and Jayawardene hold the record for the highest partnership in Test history, a phenomenal 624 set in Colombo against South Africa five years ago. A double-century stand would just about be enough for Sri Lanka in this game, and they had made a fine start, their 95-run partnership taking the total to 223 for 2.Sangakkara was on 69 and Jayawardene had 38, and both had played sensibly, with their first object crease occupation and runs their secondary goal. Their only real moment of danger came when Jayawardene swept the offspinner Nathan Lyon and his top-edge lobbed just out of the reach of Brad Haddin and Clarke, who ran from slip to leg slip to try a diving take.Otherwise, Australia barely got the sniff of a wicket during the partnership. Sangakkara brought up his half-century with a clip off his pads for a boundary off Mitchell Johnson, from his 128th delivery. He struck eight boundaries, generally waiting for the bad balls, like when he pulled consecutive boundaries off Clarke’s long-hops, but he also drove well against Ryan Harris. It was real Test cricket, a test for the fielding side as well as the batsmen. Clarke juggled his bowlers and generally the results were the same, except for another inspired introduction of Michael Hussey, who had broken through in his first over in the first innings. Hussey entered the match with two Test wickets, and has doubled that tally, after again picking up a wicket as soon as he was used in the second innings. He came on for the last over before a drinks break, and his right-arm partnership breakers accounted for Tharanga Paranavitana, who had showed impressive resolve in his 55. It was a strange dismissal; the batsman drove at the ball outside off and Brad Haddin, keeping up to the stumps, was vociferous in his appeal for caught-behind, although Hussey was barely interested. The umpire Tony Hill was unmoved, but so convinced was Haddin that Clarke asked for a review, and the third official Shavir Tarapore overturned the not-out decision. There was a faint noise as the ball passed the bat, but there was no obvious movement off the bat, and Paranavitana could have considered himself unlucky not to be given the benefit of the doubt. He had already survived a confident caught-behind review on 26 when the Australia players felt certain he had gloved the ball down the leg side off Mitchell Johnson. Replays suggested the ball may have brushed the glove, but on that occasion Tarapore did give Paranavitana the benefit of the doubt. It was one of a few nervy moments for the Sri Lanka openers in the first session as they almost made their way through to lunch unscathed, stumbling just before the break when Tillakaratne Dilshan departed for 36.The breakthrough came after the players returned to the field for a ten-minute period before lunch, after a short rain delay, and the break might have affected Dilshan’s concentration. He flashed at a Ryan Harris delivery and was caught at first slip by Shane Watson, not a surprising dismissal after two earlier edges from Dilshan off Watson fell short of men in the cordon. It ended the opening partnership at 81, a vast improvement on Sri Lanka’s first-wicket stands so far in the series: 4 and 0 in Galle and 2 in the first innings of this game. Dilshan drove well when the fast men bowled too full, while Paranavitana played some punchy drives down the ground and through cover, after he played and missed quite a few times against the new ball.Australia could also have had Paranavitana run out, but a terrible throw from Phillip Hughes at midwicket wasted the opportunity, with the batsman struggling to make his ground at the striker’s end. Australia knew they had to take their chances in the field with the possibility that bad weather would stand in their way as they aimed to take a 2-0 series lead. The time lost to rain and bad light, and the potential for further breaks, was the main reason Clarke declared overnight, with Australia at 411 for 7. He’ll be hoping for a perfect day on Monday, but even that won’t be enough for Australia if Sangakkara and Jayawardene keep up their fighting attitude.

A round-up of the action from the second day of the second round of three-day matches in the Emerging Players Tournament

Riding on an unbeaten double-century from Reeza Hendricks, South Africa Emerging Players piled up a 183-run first innings lead against Australian Institute of Sport at Endeavour Park, before declaring on 407 for 6. Australia’s openers, Sam Whiteman and Marcus Harris, then safely negotiated ten overs before stumps.Resuming on 76 for 1, Hendricks and Temba Bavuma added over a hundred runs before left-arm spinner Jon Holland bowled Bavuma for 53. Hendricks was unstoppable though, carrying his bat through the innings, in a knock that included 27 fours and two sixes. The rest of the middle order, apart from wicketkeeper Mangaliso Mosehle, failed to support Hendricks. Mosehle resisted adequately, scoring 68 in a partnership of 148. Holland was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three middle order wickets. It was another successful day for India Emerging Players in Townsville, as they forced New Zealand A to follow on and then nipped out three wickets at the end of the day to further their advantage.New Zealand were still 84 runs behind India at the close of play, with seven wickets remaining in their second innings. India’s left-arm spinners Iqbal Abdulla and Bhargav Bhatt took three wickets each in New Zealand’s first innings and restricted them to 272. Daniel Flynn scored 52, Dean Brownlie got 55 and there were a few other starts, but none of the New Zealand batsmen carried on. Their second innings started disastrously; the openers were sent back within the first two overs and then Neil Broom fell to Bhatt, leaving New Zealand 26 for 3. Flynn and Brownlie batted 11 overs at the end of the day but will need to bat long on the third day to help New Zealand avoid defeat.

Ele fez a gente confiar no time.
