Rangers predicted XI vs Borussia Dortmund

Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s Rangers side return to European action tonight as they look to progress to the next round of the Europa League.

The Gers face off against German giants Borussia Dortmund away from home in the first leg of their knockout clash with the Bundesliga outfit.

Van Bronckhorst’s men beat Annan Athletic 3-0 in their last outing as they made it through the Scottish Cup over the weekend.

How many changes will Gio make to the team? Here is our predicted XI…

We are predicting that he will make a whopping eight alterations to the side, with a host of first-team stars returning to the team.

The head coach rested a number of his first-choice options for the cup clash and we think that Allan McGregor, James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Calvin Bassey, Glen Kamara, Joe Aribo, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos will all come back from the side that beat Hibernian 2-0.

We published an article explaining why £21k-per-week gem Kamara, in particular, must be in the team come 5:45 due to the quality he can offer in possession after missing out against Annan.

In terms of the changes from that match, we are predicting that Borna Barisic will start at left-back with Bassey moving into the middle. Leon Balogun has been ruled out through injury and this means that Goldson will need a new partner at centre-back, with Bassey potentially slotting in because of the unavailability of Filip Helander.

The Swedish international made his return from injury, and scored, against Annan but he was not included in the club’s Europa League squad and that means that he will be watching on from home this evening.

Bassey playing at centre-back then allows Barisic to start at left-back – retaining his place from the win over Annan after being on the bench to start with for the clash with Hibernian.

In midfield, John Lundstram could miss out with Aaron Ramsey retaining his place in the XI. The Welsh international picked up an assist against Annan and his vast experience in Europe for Arsenal and Juventus could be crucial to the Gers as he knows what it takes to perform at this level.

At the top end of the pitch, we are predicting that Fashion Sakala will keep his spot in the frontline whilst Kemar Roofe and Amad Diallo are axed in favour of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent. Sakala is able to line up out on the right wing and has scored six goals in seven Premiership starts this term, which means that he could offer a goal threat from out wide whilst he also has the pace to cause problems on the counter attack.

AND in other news, Gvb must unleash “lightning-quick” Rangers machine today, he’s “made of iron”…

Zimbabwe close to fairytale finish

The fairytale of Zimbabwe’s run to the final is etched in every scorecard of this tri-series. They have not just been winning but have looked like a team that knows how to win

The Big PictureThe fairytale of Zimbabwe’s run to the final is etched in every scorecard of this tri-series. They have not just been winning but have looked like a team that knows how to win. They have rarely chased targets with such serenity ever before. Where did the nerves vanish? Where did the infamous middle-order collapses disappear? Where did that tendency to choke at the sight of victory go? Zimbabwe have had only one bad day so far and their confidence has visibly increased with each win. Their celebrations – the Bebeto-style cradle-the-child, Hamilton Masakadza’s ‘just married’ under-shirt flash, and the choreographed dance between Ray Price and Chris Mpofu – indicate a happy team basking and growing in success. They are a game away from their first triumph in a multi-nation tournament involving Test-playing nations. The stakes are that big for Zimbabwe and their fans on Wednesday. Schoolboys have flooded the stands and they have inspired grown-ups to dance as well, giving the atmosphere a carnival feel. While it’s tempting to side with the underdogs, it will be foolish to overlook Sri Lanka, the strongest team in the tri-series. Nuwan Kulasekara, a vastly under-rated new-ball bowler, will return for the final after missing the dead rubber against Zimbabwe, which Sri Lanka lost. So will Ajantha Mendis, who, despite his recent decline, sparkled in the second game against India, conceding only six runs in two overs during the batting Powerplay. Mendis has a terrific record against Zimbabwe, with 20 wickets from seven games. Tillakaratne Dilshan hinted that Angelo Mathews might also return for the final. Sri Lanka are going to be difficult to beat twice in a row.The final will also help determine whether this is a ‘win toss, bowl first, and win the game’ tournament. The inconsequential game between these two teams nearly disproved that theory. After getting sent in, Dilshan started with such impunity that Sri Lanka were on course for 300 at one stage but were thwarted by Zimbabwe’s spinners. Elton Chigumbura had used seamers for 13 of the first 15 overs but he won’t be repeating that tactic in the final. Expect the nagging Price and the deceptive Prosper Utseya to be unleashed on the Sri Lankans with the new ball, while Graeme Cremer and Greg Lamb await their turn. An absorbing contest awaits us.Form guide (most recent first)Zimbabwe: WWLWL
Sri Lanka: LWWLWWatch out for…Opener Brendan Taylor has been consistent this series but it’s Hamilton Masakadza who provides Zimbabwe the X-factor at the top. A lot depends on him if Zimbabwe are to get an aggressive start. Masakadza is unafraid to go over the top and has the skill to accompany that attitude.Don’t look beyond Sri Lanka’s best new-ball operator Nuwan Kulasekara. He has a wonderful wrist position at release and he can either cut the ball in or get it to go through straight without discernible difference in his action. Time and again batsmen have fallen to his two-card trick. Kulasekara, however, is not such a force with the old ball and he could bowl a large quota of his overs up front.Team news Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan (capt), 3 Dinesh Chandimal, 4 Jeevan Mendis, 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Angelo Mathews/Thilan Samaraweera, 7 Thissara Perera, 8 Suraj Randiv, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Dilhara Fernando/Thilan Thushara, 11 Ajantha Mendis.Zimbabwe (possible) 1 Hamilton Masakadza, 2 Brendan Taylor (wk) 3 Chamu Chibhabha/Andy Blignaut, 4 Charles Coventry, 5 Tatenda Taibu, 6 Craig Ervine, 7 Greg Lamb, 8 Elton Chigumbura (capt), 9 Graeme Cremer, 10 Prosper Utseya, 11 Ray Price.Stats and trivia Kulasekara has 88 wickets at an average of 27.93 in his career but his 10 against Zimbabwe cost only 16.20 apiece. Zimbabwe have won 99 ODIs so far. Will they win their 100th game tomorrow?Dilshan has only three fifties from 16 games against Zimbabwe and his highest is 78.Quotes”I try to tell myself to stay relaxed as much as possible; you have a job to do and go out there and do it. They [Sri Lanka] have rested some players in this game and so definitely the contest will be stiffer in the final.”
“The seamers have struggled with the new ball but the spinners have bowled really well all through this season. If I lose the toss in the final, I won’t be too concerned; it’s just the matter of doing well on field.”

Agbonlahor thinks Villa could sell Luiz

Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested that Aston Villa may sell Douglas Luiz if they sign a new defensive midfielder in the summer, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Villa rejected three offers for Luiz

The Brazil international has less than 18 months left on his current Villa contract, and as such, a number of possibilities have been explored regarding the midfielder’s future. Surprisingly, Steven Gerrard recently revealed that discussions have not yet been opened over a contract extension.

According to a report by MailOnline, Aston Villa rejected three offers for the 23-year-old during the January transfer window, including one on deadline day by Tottenham. Arsenal were also linked with a £30m move for the midfielder, who previously worked with Mikel Arteta at Manchester City.

Luiz staying at the club until (at least) the summer will surely come as a huge relief for Villa fans, as the Brazilian has played an instrumental part in the club’s season. He has made 17 Premier League appearances and averaged the squad’s second-highest overall performance rating from SofaScore.

The Latest: Agbonlahor tips Villa to sell Luiz

Despite the player’s evident importance to Villa, Agbonlahor has tipped the club to sell Luiz if they sign a new defensive midfielder in the summer.

Speaking to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League scorer claimed that the 23-year-old needs to be a better tackler if he wants to be Gerrard’s long-term defensive midfielder, saying: “I actually really like him. He starts attacks off really well. Maybe the only question is, does he tackle as well as you need too in a defensive midfielder role.

“With Nakamba out injured you need him in there and he’s very important at the moment. But you don’t know what the future holds, if Aston Villa can get Yves Bissouma in the summer they might decide to sell Douglas Luiz in the summer.

“You don’t know where Steven Gerrard’s mind is at yet with Douglas Luiz. Maybe he’s got 17 or 18 games now to show Steven Gerrard why he should be given a new contract and kept at the club.

“He’s a qualtiy player, a Brazil international. But when you play that defensive midfield role you have to be better at tackling.”

The Verdict: Bissouma move could seal Luiz’s exit

Throughout January, Villa were heavily linked with a move for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma. Having entered the last 18 months of his contract, the Mali international has been the subject of vast transfer speculation amid a multitude of potential Premier League suitors, but it was Villa who were reported as being in ‘intense talks’ with the player.

If Villa are able to secure Bissouma in the summer, this could be a sign that Luiz will not be featuring in Gerrard’s starting XI going forward. Once predicted to become ‘one of the top midfielders in Europe’, it would be hard to imagine the Brazil international accepting limited game-time with occasional appearances off the bench.

As a result, it doesn’t seem outside the realms of possibility that Luiz could seek a move elsewhere, with Villa likely to accept his departure if they receive a bid that they deem acceptable.

MPs demand Parliament investigation of IPL

Opposition MPs in the Indian Parliament have demanded a Parliamentary probe, into the allegations that have been swirling around since the story broke a fortnight ago

Is Lalit Modi going to move court seeking a stay on Monday’s IPL governing council meet?•Associated Press

A potentially significant day in the IPL controversy saga has begun on a stormy note as opposition MPs in the Indian Parliament demanding a Parliamentary probe, in addition to the investigations currently being carried out by government agencies, into the allegations that have been swirling around since the story broke a fortnight ago.The afternoon saw IPL CEO Sundar Raman at the income-tax offices in Mumbai, where he was due to submit to income-tax officials documents relating to the ownership details of the eight original franchises. In the evening the league will host its 2010 tournament awards, where the BCCI’s top officials are expected to be present. There are also reports that at some point on Friday, Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, will move court seeking a stay on the governing council meeting scheduled for Monday. Modi, though, told Cricinfo such reports were “rubbish”.In the lower house of Parliament, Opposition members sought a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), comprising MPs, to investigate the alleged irregularities in the league. In response the finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee, said a decision on it would be taken after “due diligence”.”In these matters everything has to be done with due deliberations. It cannot be instant coffee. I have noted the suggestions of the honourable members and it will be communicated to the Prime Minister,” Mukherjee said. The matter was raised by the leader of the opposition, Sushma Swaraj, who alleged that the Government was protecting leaders from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and demanded that an investigation be ordered into the entire controversy. The NCP is headed by Sharad Pawar, the ICC’s president-elect and federal agriculture minister; another leader is the aviation minister Praful Patel, whose daughter is an IPL employee and whose office forwarded a mail to former minister Shashi Tharoor containing information on franchise valuations.”The Government may not conduct an impartial inquiry as they want to save their coalition. We need a JPC to investigate this,” Swaraj said. She also raised an issue reported in Friday’s papers, where Patel’s daughter allegedly used her father’s clout to force Air India, the government-owned airline, to cancel a scheduled Delhi-Coimbatore flight and instead used the plane for a chartered flight to ferry IPL guests from Chandigarh to Chennai.Swaraj was supported by other MPs including Janata Dal (United) leader Sharad Yadav, who said that ministers must be accountable for their actions, and Communist Party of India leader Gurudas Dasgupta. The House was adjourned when MPs continued to demand an investigation, after which Mukherjee discussed with other ministers the issue of setting up of a JPC.

Australia's pace against Pakistan's spin

Much about the way these two teams have arrived at this juncture suggests that we could have a repeat of last year’s tense semi-final between South Africa and Pakistan. In reality nothing stands further from the truth

The Big PictureMuch about the way these two teams have arrived at this juncture suggests that we could have on our hands a repeat of last year’s tense, compelling semi-final between South Africa and Pakistan.Even more than last year, Pakistan’s progress this time has been deeply unimpressive. They have only won two games from five and are still not sure of their best XI. Australia, like South Africa last year, have uncomplicatedly and with little fuss pushed aside teams unfortunate enough to get in their way: blast them at the top of each innings. Chaos against order, art taking on science and all that? They’re even playing in St Lucia, which like Trent Bridge last year, should work in Pakistan’s favour. In reality nothing stands further from the truth. This is, after all, Australia and Australia is Australia precisely because it is not South Africa: in that alone waits a book on why two cultures so similar are so different. South Africa die on such days, wracked by demons of rigidity. Australia live for such days, the pressure of semi-finals and finals sharpening their focus even more. On these occasions they are at their most Australian. They also seem to have finally worked out the format, or at least applied their own interpretation to it. Very fast bowlers, good solid ones, appear to be the key in a format which is often credited – mistakenly – to have saved spin. Their openers are the most brutal and their middle order most adept at recovery. Even negatives are really a positive: Michael Clarke has only 48 runs in the tournament at a strike rate of 70, yet it is difficult to argue against Malcolm Conn’s assessment of him as this format’s Mike Brearley currently.Further, they have spanked Pakistan all shades of black and blue for the last ten internationals running between the two, including the group game earlier, also incidentally, at St Lucia. And historically, they are also the team least bewildered by Pakistan’s mood swings: if Pakistan are awful, they are duly thrashed. If Pakistan are brilliant, they are duly bested. All of it bodes less well than it did last year for Shahid Afridi’s men. They have at least improved in their last two games and their smartness, as ever, has been in performing when it matters most. In taking the losses to England and New Zealand to the very death, they secured a minor victory in a tournament where even good sides have often been very bad.Hope springs mostly from their bowling and spin in particular. If something remarkable is to happen, Saeed Ajmal can easily be imagined at the centre of it and Abdur Rehman not far away. And it may not be the worst time for Afridi to slip back into wicket-taking mode.Could it also be just the right kind of time to thrust Hammad Azam into international cricket? Everyone else in the squad has been tried and Mohammad Hafeez, the most surprising name among the nine to feature in all five matches, must be vulnerable.Form guide (Most recent first)Australia WWWWWPakistan WLLLWWatch out forThe three pace amigos of Australia, Dirk Nannes, Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson, have taken 29 wickets between them in this tournament. The pace, angles and intent they bring are difficult to compete against and if they fire as they have been doing, there will be little stopping Australia.Runs are what Pakistan need and more likely than not, they will come from the Akmal brothers. One innings apart, Kamran hasn’t kicked on from several starts, though he has at least provided some early momentum. Umar, meanwhile, has mostly looked good, though only against South Africa has he properly kicked on. If he clicks, Pakistan have a chance.Team newsWhy would Australia fix it when it clearly isn’t broke?Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson 2 David Warner 3 Brad Haddin (wk) 4 Michael Clarke (capt) 5 David Hussey 6 Cameron White 7 Michael Hussey 8 Steve Smith 9 Mitchell Johnson 10 Dirk Nannes 11 Shaun TaitPakistan, in contrast, need to answer a number of questions. How long to persist with Misbah-ul-Haq, scorer of 68 runs and holder of a sub-100 strike rate? Is there a suitable replacement? If Mohammad Hafeez hasn’t sparked for five games, will he do so now? It is St Lucia, but just one fast bowler, in a Pakistan side?Pakistan (probable) 1 Salman Butt 2 Kamran Akmal (wk) 3 Khalid Latif 4 Hammad Azam/Mohammad Hafeez 5 Umar Akmal 6 Misbah-ul-Haq 7 Shahid Afridi 8 Abdul Razzaq 9 Abdur Rehman 10 Mohammad Aamer 11 Saeed AjmalPitch and conditionsPakistan would prefer to play Australia at St Lucia rather than Barbados, but given how they were hit in the group game earlier at the same venue, they face the deep blue sea rather than the devil. The surface is slower, enough to help Pakistan’s spinners, but not enough to neuter Australia’s pace.StatsAustralia’s bowlers have taken 47 of a possible 50 wickets in the tournament so far and the side has run-out the remaining threeShaun Tait has conceded per over through the tournamentIn Salman Butt and Saeed Ajmal, Pakistan have the tournament’s third highest run-scorer and wicket-taker respectivelyPakistan is the only team to make the semi-finals of all ICC events since the 2007 World CupQuotes
“We are playing well overall but we are missing opportunities by dropping catches. In any format, it is the fielding that wins you the matches.”
Shahid Afridi singles out fielding as Pakistan’s major worry.”Everyone has performed well in at least one of the games. Our fielding has been outstanding and is a huge part of Australian cricket in any form of the game, that’s probably the most satisfying for me.”
Michael Clarke has no such worries.
