Agbonlahor thinks Villa could sell Luiz

Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested that Aston Villa may sell Douglas Luiz if they sign a new defensive midfielder in the summer, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Villa rejected three offers for Luiz

The Brazil international has less than 18 months left on his current Villa contract, and as such, a number of possibilities have been explored regarding the midfielder’s future. Surprisingly, Steven Gerrard recently revealed that discussions have not yet been opened over a contract extension.

According to a report by MailOnline, Aston Villa rejected three offers for the 23-year-old during the January transfer window, including one on deadline day by Tottenham. Arsenal were also linked with a £30m move for the midfielder, who previously worked with Mikel Arteta at Manchester City.

Luiz staying at the club until (at least) the summer will surely come as a huge relief for Villa fans, as the Brazilian has played an instrumental part in the club’s season. He has made 17 Premier League appearances and averaged the squad’s second-highest overall performance rating from SofaScore.

The Latest: Agbonlahor tips Villa to sell Luiz

Despite the player’s evident importance to Villa, Agbonlahor has tipped the club to sell Luiz if they sign a new defensive midfielder in the summer.

Speaking to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League scorer claimed that the 23-year-old needs to be a better tackler if he wants to be Gerrard’s long-term defensive midfielder, saying: “I actually really like him. He starts attacks off really well. Maybe the only question is, does he tackle as well as you need too in a defensive midfielder role.

“With Nakamba out injured you need him in there and he’s very important at the moment. But you don’t know what the future holds, if Aston Villa can get Yves Bissouma in the summer they might decide to sell Douglas Luiz in the summer.

“You don’t know where Steven Gerrard’s mind is at yet with Douglas Luiz. Maybe he’s got 17 or 18 games now to show Steven Gerrard why he should be given a new contract and kept at the club.

“He’s a qualtiy player, a Brazil international. But when you play that defensive midfield role you have to be better at tackling.”

The Verdict: Bissouma move could seal Luiz’s exit

Throughout January, Villa were heavily linked with a move for Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma. Having entered the last 18 months of his contract, the Mali international has been the subject of vast transfer speculation amid a multitude of potential Premier League suitors, but it was Villa who were reported as being in ‘intense talks’ with the player.

If Villa are able to secure Bissouma in the summer, this could be a sign that Luiz will not be featuring in Gerrard’s starting XI going forward. Once predicted to become ‘one of the top midfielders in Europe’, it would be hard to imagine the Brazil international accepting limited game-time with occasional appearances off the bench.

As a result, it doesn’t seem outside the realms of possibility that Luiz could seek a move elsewhere, with Villa likely to accept his departure if they receive a bid that they deem acceptable.

Australia's pace against Pakistan's spin

Much about the way these two teams have arrived at this juncture suggests that we could have a repeat of last year’s tense semi-final between South Africa and Pakistan. In reality nothing stands further from the truth

The Big PictureMuch about the way these two teams have arrived at this juncture suggests that we could have on our hands a repeat of last year’s tense, compelling semi-final between South Africa and Pakistan.Even more than last year, Pakistan’s progress this time has been deeply unimpressive. They have only won two games from five and are still not sure of their best XI. Australia, like South Africa last year, have uncomplicatedly and with little fuss pushed aside teams unfortunate enough to get in their way: blast them at the top of each innings. Chaos against order, art taking on science and all that? They’re even playing in St Lucia, which like Trent Bridge last year, should work in Pakistan’s favour. In reality nothing stands further from the truth. This is, after all, Australia and Australia is Australia precisely because it is not South Africa: in that alone waits a book on why two cultures so similar are so different. South Africa die on such days, wracked by demons of rigidity. Australia live for such days, the pressure of semi-finals and finals sharpening their focus even more. On these occasions they are at their most Australian. They also seem to have finally worked out the format, or at least applied their own interpretation to it. Very fast bowlers, good solid ones, appear to be the key in a format which is often credited – mistakenly – to have saved spin. Their openers are the most brutal and their middle order most adept at recovery. Even negatives are really a positive: Michael Clarke has only 48 runs in the tournament at a strike rate of 70, yet it is difficult to argue against Malcolm Conn’s assessment of him as this format’s Mike Brearley currently.Further, they have spanked Pakistan all shades of black and blue for the last ten internationals running between the two, including the group game earlier, also incidentally, at St Lucia. And historically, they are also the team least bewildered by Pakistan’s mood swings: if Pakistan are awful, they are duly thrashed. If Pakistan are brilliant, they are duly bested. All of it bodes less well than it did last year for Shahid Afridi’s men. They have at least improved in their last two games and their smartness, as ever, has been in performing when it matters most. In taking the losses to England and New Zealand to the very death, they secured a minor victory in a tournament where even good sides have often been very bad.Hope springs mostly from their bowling and spin in particular. If something remarkable is to happen, Saeed Ajmal can easily be imagined at the centre of it and Abdur Rehman not far away. And it may not be the worst time for Afridi to slip back into wicket-taking mode.Could it also be just the right kind of time to thrust Hammad Azam into international cricket? Everyone else in the squad has been tried and Mohammad Hafeez, the most surprising name among the nine to feature in all five matches, must be vulnerable.Form guide (Most recent first)Australia WWWWWPakistan WLLLWWatch out forThe three pace amigos of Australia, Dirk Nannes, Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson, have taken 29 wickets between them in this tournament. The pace, angles and intent they bring are difficult to compete against and if they fire as they have been doing, there will be little stopping Australia.Runs are what Pakistan need and more likely than not, they will come from the Akmal brothers. One innings apart, Kamran hasn’t kicked on from several starts, though he has at least provided some early momentum. Umar, meanwhile, has mostly looked good, though only against South Africa has he properly kicked on. If he clicks, Pakistan have a chance.Team newsWhy would Australia fix it when it clearly isn’t broke?Australia (probable) 1 Shane Watson 2 David Warner 3 Brad Haddin (wk) 4 Michael Clarke (capt) 5 David Hussey 6 Cameron White 7 Michael Hussey 8 Steve Smith 9 Mitchell Johnson 10 Dirk Nannes 11 Shaun TaitPakistan, in contrast, need to answer a number of questions. How long to persist with Misbah-ul-Haq, scorer of 68 runs and holder of a sub-100 strike rate? Is there a suitable replacement? If Mohammad Hafeez hasn’t sparked for five games, will he do so now? It is St Lucia, but just one fast bowler, in a Pakistan side?Pakistan (probable) 1 Salman Butt 2 Kamran Akmal (wk) 3 Khalid Latif 4 Hammad Azam/Mohammad Hafeez 5 Umar Akmal 6 Misbah-ul-Haq 7 Shahid Afridi 8 Abdul Razzaq 9 Abdur Rehman 10 Mohammad Aamer 11 Saeed AjmalPitch and conditionsPakistan would prefer to play Australia at St Lucia rather than Barbados, but given how they were hit in the group game earlier at the same venue, they face the deep blue sea rather than the devil. The surface is slower, enough to help Pakistan’s spinners, but not enough to neuter Australia’s pace.StatsAustralia’s bowlers have taken 47 of a possible 50 wickets in the tournament so far and the side has run-out the remaining threeShaun Tait has conceded per over through the tournamentIn Salman Butt and Saeed Ajmal, Pakistan have the tournament’s third highest run-scorer and wicket-taker respectivelyPakistan is the only team to make the semi-finals of all ICC events since the 2007 World CupQuotes
“We are playing well overall but we are missing opportunities by dropping catches. In any format, it is the fielding that wins you the matches.”
Shahid Afridi singles out fielding as Pakistan’s major worry.”Everyone has performed well in at least one of the games. Our fielding has been outstanding and is a huge part of Australian cricket in any form of the game, that’s probably the most satisfying for me.”
Michael Clarke has no such worries.

Newcastle: Mohamed Salisu eyed

Southampton’s Mohammed Salisu is one of the players Newcastle United have considered during the January transfer window, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has revealed.

The lowdown

Newcastle are reportedly looking at domestic alternatives to their top centre-back target, Sevilla’s Diego Carlos, as the La Liga outfit hold firm in their demands (via The Athletic).

Salisu moved to England relatively recently, joining Saints from Real Valladolid in August 2020 for a fee of £10.8million. The 22-year-old, now valued at £9million by Transfermarkt, signed a contract that runs until the summer of 2024.

Salisu has been a regular under Ralph Hasenhuttl this season, starting 20 of their 23 Premier League matches.

The latest

Edwards tweeted on Monday afternoon that ‘NUFC have looked at’ the Ghanaian defender.

However, he ‘was told last week’ that the move didn’t look ‘possible’ in January.

The verdict

It’s tempting to wonder if Salisu’s sensational performance in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with league leaders Manchester City has only inflated his price tag.

Salisu made more clearances (14), tackles (seven), interceptions (four) and blocks (three) than anybody else, earning a place in Alan Shearer’s Team of the Week.

Football talent scout Jacek Kulig called it a ‘monstrous performance’, while The Express’ Charlie Gordon wrote that he deserved a ‘boxing licence’ after taking a ball to the chin and soldiering on.

He’s still young, and on the evidence of that display, it’s hard to dispute BBC journalist Tom Murray’s claim that ‘he has a frightening amount of potential’, so perhaps the Magpies should stump up a big offer and see how the south coast outfit respond.

Porterfield prepares for his 100th cap

William Porterfield is hoping his 100th appearance for Ireland will bring success•International Cricket Council

William Porterfield will make his 100th appearance for Ireland in Thursday’s one-day international against West Indies in Jamaica.Porterfield, the Ireland captain, will have fond memories of the Sabina Park ground after playing there when Ireland inflicted a shock defeat over Pakistan in the 2007 World Cup.Thursday’s game is part of Ireland’s preparations for the World Twenty20, which starts at the end of April in the Caribbean. “It’d be a perfect way to celebrate my 100th cap to get a win over West Indies,” said Porterfield. “Sabina Park has great memories for us – the dramatic tie with Zimbabwe and the win over Pakistan.”He will become the 11th player to play 100 matches for Ireland but will want a better return from his side than last Sunday, when poor batting meant they suffered a 31-run defeat in a Twenty20 match against West Indies.”We were in a great position against them on Sunday, but let it slide,” he said. “Our bowlers are hitting their strides, and Trent Johnston in particular has been exceptional. It’s up to the batsmen to come to the party now.”

A torcida do Vasco merece.

Singapore edge Bahrain to open account

A round-up of matches at the ICC World Cricket League Division Five in Nepal

Cricinfo staff23-Feb-2010USA notched up their third straight victory, upstaging Jersey by 66 runs in Kirtipur. Aditya Thyagarajan top scored with 83, striking seven fours and a six, and added 118 for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Carl Wright, who had made 76, to rescue USA from a precarious 55 for 5 at one stage. Rashard Marshall then supported Thyagarajan in an unbeaten 80-run seventh-wicket stand which proved match-winning. Marshall helped in a late surge, where he smacked five sixes, to lift USA to a competitive 253. In response, Jersey struggled, for the target proved too imposing. Opener Dean Morrison’s 36 came off 82 balls, and though there were useful contributions from the middle order – Samuel de la Haye and Andy Dewhurst made quickfire 30s – none were substantial enough for USA to feel insecure about their total. Lennox Cush and Saurabh Verma grabbed seven wickets between them to limit Jersey to 187 for 9. “I’m delighted – it was a real team effort to achieve the victory,” Wright, who was named Man of the Match, said. “The pitch was difficult to bat on so I aimed to occupy the crease for as long as possible and eventually it paid off for me. The situation called for that type of innings so I just tried my best. We still have two games to go and we are just trying to take it one game at a time and hopefully in our next match we can put in a good performance.”Singapore recorded their first success of the tournament, winning a tense fixture against Fiji in Lalitpur by two wickets. Captain Monish Arora starred with an unbeaten 94, and was helped by a spirited effort by the lower order, as Singapore overtook Fiji’s total of 194 with 14 balls to spare. They had been struggling at 107 for 6, dented by Sakaria Lomani’s three-wicket burst, but Arora stood firm, striking 12 fours and a six in his determined knock. He added 56 for the eighth wicket with Saad Janua and then took it upon himself to see his side through, taking the bulk of the strike and adding an unbeaten 36 for the ninth wicket, of which Mohamed Shoaib, his partner, made just six. Singapore’s own bowling effort had been led by fast bowler Pramodh Raja, who grabbed 4 for 26 to limit Fiji to a chaseable total.Hosts Nepal continued their impressive run in the tournament, easing to an eight-wicket win over Bahrain in Bhaktapur to make it three victories in as many games. Medium-pacer Basanta Regmi and offspinner Sanjam Regmi were the stars with the ball, sharing seven wickets between them, to skittle out Bahrain for 114. Wicketkeeper Shehzad Ahmed top scored with 27, an indication of how dominating Nepal were with the ball. In their reply, Nepal suffered two early setbacks but that had no effect on captain Paras Khadka, who struck nine fours and three sixes in his 71 and added an unbeaten 108 with Shakti Gauchan to seal victory with almost 27 overs to spare. “We have done very well so far and tomorrow we may be in a position where we have qualified,” Khadka said. “I am looking forward to playing at the university ground tomorrow as that is where we train every day so we’re happy to be back there.”
