William Porterfield is hoping his 100th appearance for Ireland will bring success•International Cricket Council

William Porterfield will make his 100th appearance for Ireland in Thursday’s one-day international against West Indies in Jamaica.Porterfield, the Ireland captain, will have fond memories of the Sabina Park ground after playing there when Ireland inflicted a shock defeat over Pakistan in the 2007 World Cup.Thursday’s game is part of Ireland’s preparations for the World Twenty20, which starts at the end of April in the Caribbean. “It’d be a perfect way to celebrate my 100th cap to get a win over West Indies,” said Porterfield. “Sabina Park has great memories for us – the dramatic tie with Zimbabwe and the win over Pakistan.”He will become the 11th player to play 100 matches for Ireland but will want a better return from his side than last Sunday, when poor batting meant they suffered a 31-run defeat in a Twenty20 match against West Indies.”We were in a great position against them on Sunday, but let it slide,” he said. “Our bowlers are hitting their strides, and Trent Johnston in particular has been exceptional. It’s up to the batsmen to come to the party now.”

Aston Villa: Fans react to Eddie Nketiah links

Aston Villa have considered a move for Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, according to The Athletic.

And, as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been reacting to the rumour on social media.

Steven Gerrard and Johan Lange have been extremely busy his month, bringing in three senior additions and one for the academy, with their attention now on securing a centre-back and a defensive midfielder.

However, according to Gregg Evans, Villa have also discussed attacking options. Nketiah has been considered as he is now into the final six months of his Gunners deal, whereas other forwards across Europe are also on the radar.

The 22-year-old is yet to start a Premier League fixture this season and has scored just five times in 41 appearances in the top flight.

Villa fans react

The AVFC Faithful relayed Evans’ claim regarding Nketiah on Twitter. These Villa supporters weren’t exactly thrilled at the links, with one describing the Englishman as ‘terrible’.

Singapore edge Bahrain to open account

A round-up of matches at the ICC World Cricket League Division Five in Nepal

Cricinfo staff23-Feb-2010USA notched up their third straight victory, upstaging Jersey by 66 runs in Kirtipur. Aditya Thyagarajan top scored with 83, striking seven fours and a six, and added 118 for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper Carl Wright, who had made 76, to rescue USA from a precarious 55 for 5 at one stage. Rashard Marshall then supported Thyagarajan in an unbeaten 80-run seventh-wicket stand which proved match-winning. Marshall helped in a late surge, where he smacked five sixes, to lift USA to a competitive 253. In response, Jersey struggled, for the target proved too imposing. Opener Dean Morrison’s 36 came off 82 balls, and though there were useful contributions from the middle order – Samuel de la Haye and Andy Dewhurst made quickfire 30s – none were substantial enough for USA to feel insecure about their total. Lennox Cush and Saurabh Verma grabbed seven wickets between them to limit Jersey to 187 for 9. “I’m delighted – it was a real team effort to achieve the victory,” Wright, who was named Man of the Match, said. “The pitch was difficult to bat on so I aimed to occupy the crease for as long as possible and eventually it paid off for me. The situation called for that type of innings so I just tried my best. We still have two games to go and we are just trying to take it one game at a time and hopefully in our next match we can put in a good performance.”Singapore recorded their first success of the tournament, winning a tense fixture against Fiji in Lalitpur by two wickets. Captain Monish Arora starred with an unbeaten 94, and was helped by a spirited effort by the lower order, as Singapore overtook Fiji’s total of 194 with 14 balls to spare. They had been struggling at 107 for 6, dented by Sakaria Lomani’s three-wicket burst, but Arora stood firm, striking 12 fours and a six in his determined knock. He added 56 for the eighth wicket with Saad Janua and then took it upon himself to see his side through, taking the bulk of the strike and adding an unbeaten 36 for the ninth wicket, of which Mohamed Shoaib, his partner, made just six. Singapore’s own bowling effort had been led by fast bowler Pramodh Raja, who grabbed 4 for 26 to limit Fiji to a chaseable total.Hosts Nepal continued their impressive run in the tournament, easing to an eight-wicket win over Bahrain in Bhaktapur to make it three victories in as many games. Medium-pacer Basanta Regmi and offspinner Sanjam Regmi were the stars with the ball, sharing seven wickets between them, to skittle out Bahrain for 114. Wicketkeeper Shehzad Ahmed top scored with 27, an indication of how dominating Nepal were with the ball. In their reply, Nepal suffered two early setbacks but that had no effect on captain Paras Khadka, who struck nine fours and three sixes in his 71 and added an unbeaten 108 with Shakti Gauchan to seal victory with almost 27 overs to spare. “We have done very well so far and tomorrow we may be in a position where we have qualified,” Khadka said. “I am looking forward to playing at the university ground tomorrow as that is where we train every day so we’re happy to be back there.”

Knee injury may force Oram out of series

New Zealand allrounder Jacob Oram is in doubt for the remainder of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series after sustaining a knee injury in the first ODI

New Zealand allrounder Jacob Oram is in doubt for the remainder of the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series after sustaining a knee injury in the first ODI. Oram sent down seven overs, taking the key wicket of Shane Watson, before he twisted his left knee in the 28th over while fielding a single off Michael Hussey. His spikes appeared to stick in the turf as he fell to the ground, writhing in pain, and he was carried off by team-mates Tim Southee and James Franklin.”His knee is painful, it’s still unclear what it is…there will be further investigation in Auckland tomorrow and we’ll assess after that,” Dave Currie, New Zealand’s manager, said. “It’s pretty painful at the moment so we’ll have to wait and see.”Currie said no replacement had yet been made but fast bowler Ian Butler was a likely call-up. If there is ligament damage, not only will Oram miss the series but his participation in the upcoming IPL with Chennai Super Kings is in doubt as well.Oram, 31, retired from Test cricket in October after injury worries, involving his back and foot, limited him to 33 appearances over a seven-year career. In the two Twenty20s against Australia before Wednesday’s game he scored 1 and 0 and conceded 67 off six overs. Even as there were calls for him to be excluded from the ODI series opener against Australia in Napier, he found support from captain Daniel Vettori. The good news, though, for New Zealand is that Vettori, who was ruled out of the match in Napier due to a neck injury, is expected to back for the second game of the five-match series on Saturday.”His neck had a kink in it yesterday but he thought he would be all right,” Currie said. “Even warming up today he thought he would be all right but he wasn’t and there was no point taking any risk on it. He is fully expected to be back next game.”Ross Taylor enjoyed immediate success as new captain as New Zealand won a tense series opener by two wickets.

NUFC: Waugh makes transfer claim

A key Newcastle United transfer update has emerged, regarding what position they are looking to strengthen in…

What’s the talk?

Athletic journalist Chris Waugh has revealed that the Magpies are in the market to add at least one new striker to their squad this month, although they are not close to completing any deal as it stands.

In the Q&A section of his piece on The Athletic, Waugh replied to a fan asking about Steve Nickson and the pursuit of a forward:

“In terms of Nickson, you’re right that he was working within restrictions under Ashley and, hopefully, that may have changed. The players identified do seem impressive so far, so let’s hope they can manage to sign some of them. As for his long-term future, there has been no rush to remove him, but I think substantive decisions will be deferred until a CEO and director of football are in place, then they can determine the long-term direction of the club.

“In terms of strikers, they are very much actively looking to recruit at least one but, as you say, it’s a very difficult window and hard to secure one even during the summer, so it’s proving tricky, but they will keep attempting to lure one. I don’t believe anything is close, though, and I think they see beyond Gayle now.”

Delight

Newcastle fans will surely be delighted with this update as the club are in desperate need of more goalscorers in the squad heading into the second half of the campaign.

This was shown in full view on Saturday as the Magpies lost 1-0 to Cambridge in the FA Cup. They managed 19 shots, nine on target, against the League One outfit and were unable to find a way past Dimitar Mitov as they wasted chance after chance at St. James’ Park.

In the Premier League this season, only Allan Saint-Maximin (four) and Callum Wilson (six) have scored more than one goal. This also highlights how little Eddie Howe has in the striking department and why fans will be buzzing with Waugh’s latest claim.

Goals win games and Newcastle have only won one league match all season, which is why they could benefit greatly from bringing some extra firepower to the side. They could improve their chances of winning games and dragging themselves out of the dropzone by signing a player who could come in and score six or seven goals in the next five months.

Therefore, fans will be delighted that the club are working hard on a deal to sign a striker and are aware that the position needs attention alongside other areas. It is now down to the likes of Nickson, Howe and Nick Hammond to identify the right targets and get them in before the window slams shut at the end of the month.

Villa fans react to Luiz and Watkins rumour

Arsenal are thought to be keen on signing Aston Villa duo Douglas Luiz and Ollie Watkins.

That’s according to ESPN, and a number of Villa fans have shared their thoughts on the transfer rumour via social media.

The Gunners appear to be after a new forward, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s future at the Emirates Stadium in doubt.

Arsenal are planning for life without the 32-year-old, with sources informing ESPN that Watkins is on their radar. Mikel Arteta is reportedly a fan of the Villa striker, who has scored 21 times in 56 appearances for the Midlands club.

Meanwhile, Arteta is still looking to sign a holding midfielder, with Luiz another player of interest to the Gunners. The 23-year-old has turned out on 91 occasions for Villa and is under contract in the Midlands for a further 18 months.

Villa fans react

The AVFC Faithful on Twitter shared the rumours regarding Arsenal’s interest in Watkins and Luiz. Here is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with one labelling the Gunners ‘strange’ after the two clubs had also duelled to sign Emiliano Buendia last summer.

Given that the striker and midfielder are ranked second and third respectively among Villa’s squad in terms of overall performance rating this season by WhoScored, it’s little wonder so many of the club’s fans have baulked at reports of the north Londoners’ interest in the pair.
