NUFC: Waugh makes transfer claim

A key Newcastle United transfer update has emerged, regarding what position they are looking to strengthen in…

What’s the talk?

Athletic journalist Chris Waugh has revealed that the Magpies are in the market to add at least one new striker to their squad this month, although they are not close to completing any deal as it stands.

In the Q&A section of his piece on The Athletic, Waugh replied to a fan asking about Steve Nickson and the pursuit of a forward:

“In terms of Nickson, you’re right that he was working within restrictions under Ashley and, hopefully, that may have changed. The players identified do seem impressive so far, so let’s hope they can manage to sign some of them. As for his long-term future, there has been no rush to remove him, but I think substantive decisions will be deferred until a CEO and director of football are in place, then they can determine the long-term direction of the club.

“In terms of strikers, they are very much actively looking to recruit at least one but, as you say, it’s a very difficult window and hard to secure one even during the summer, so it’s proving tricky, but they will keep attempting to lure one. I don’t believe anything is close, though, and I think they see beyond Gayle now.”

Delight

Newcastle fans will surely be delighted with this update as the club are in desperate need of more goalscorers in the squad heading into the second half of the campaign.

This was shown in full view on Saturday as the Magpies lost 1-0 to Cambridge in the FA Cup. They managed 19 shots, nine on target, against the League One outfit and were unable to find a way past Dimitar Mitov as they wasted chance after chance at St. James’ Park.

In the Premier League this season, only Allan Saint-Maximin (four) and Callum Wilson (six) have scored more than one goal. This also highlights how little Eddie Howe has in the striking department and why fans will be buzzing with Waugh’s latest claim.

Goals win games and Newcastle have only won one league match all season, which is why they could benefit greatly from bringing some extra firepower to the side. They could improve their chances of winning games and dragging themselves out of the dropzone by signing a player who could come in and score six or seven goals in the next five months.

Therefore, fans will be delighted that the club are working hard on a deal to sign a striker and are aware that the position needs attention alongside other areas. It is now down to the likes of Nickson, Howe and Nick Hammond to identify the right targets and get them in before the window slams shut at the end of the month.

Traore would complete lethal Spurs attack

Tottenham Hotspur could form a frightening frontline amid interest in Adama Traore this January…

What’s the word?

The north London outfit have once again been linked with a move for the powerful Wolverhampton Wanderers winger ahead of next month’s transfer window.

According to the Telegraph’s Matt Law, Spurs boss Antonio Conte is a huge fan of the Spain international and the club could be set to revisit their interest in signing him.

‘The speed-king was identified as a target while Nuno [Santo] was in charge during the summer, but Spurs only made an offer to take him on loan. Conte is also a fan of the player and would no doubt see a similar bid as a waste of time. He will want Levy to commit to the kind of offer that might make Wolves think,’ he wrote.

Earlier this month, it was suggested that Wolves would accept a bid as low as £18m for the 25-year-old, as per ESPN.

Imagine him and Son

Not only would Traore be a perfect fit for Conte’s wing-back system in N17 but he could give Spurs another standout option in the final third, one that would send fear into many a Premier League defence.

He’s capable of playing as a winger, more centrally as an inside-forward and at wing-back, so there is plenty of room for the Italian to fit him into the team.

Traore has long been a nuisance in the top-flight and alongside a player like Heung-min Son, Conte could have a frightening duo to play in behind Harry Kane.

As he did last season, the Wolves star leads the division for dribbles per game (4.7). Of course, his end product has always been brought into question but Kane and Son are there to take up the brunt of the goalscoring duties.

He’s still averaging 1.1 key passes per game, proving to be quite the creative option, too.

Aside from his ball-carrying ability, Traore is also built like a brick wall and his physicality is another reason why so many full-backs struggle to combat him.

Southampton forward Che Adams dubbed him a “monster” to the Premier League’s official YouTube channel, whilst Jurgen Klopp has often deemed him to be “unplayable.”

On the above evidence, sporting director Fabio Paratici must look to seal a move for Traore, especially for as little as £18m, in January.

AND in other news, Spurs can sign their next Mousa Dembele in “devastating” £26m-rated machine who won’t cost a penny…

Contracts expansion has boosted Sri Lanka – Board

Sri Lanka Cricket has attributed the success of suitable replacements to the present national team to its far-sighted policy in expanding its list of contracted players from 32 to 76 since May last year

Sri Lanka Cricket has attributed the success of suitable replacements in the present national team to its far-sighted policy in expanding its list of contracted players from 32 to 76 since May last year.Players like offspinner Suraj Randiv, allrounders Thissara Perera and Muthumudalige Pushpakumara, fast bowler Suranga Lakmal and batsman Lahiru Thirimanne have lived up to expectations after filling in as replacements in the injury-stricken Sri Lankan team on their tours to India and Bangladesh. With the number of injuries mounting, batsmen Dinesh Chandimal and Mahela Udawatte have joined the national team in Bangladesh as reinforcements for the remainder of the tri-nation series.SLC’s head coach Jerome Jayaratne said the injuries helped open a window for young players to display their skills at international level. “These injuries, although it is not the right thing to say, helped us to expose these young players because they hardly get an opportunity when the established players are fit,” Jayaratne said.SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said when the present set of administrators took office in April, only the Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka A team players were on contract with the board. “We thought if we are to bridge the gap between the national cricketers and the potential national cricketers we needed to create an environment where they can compete with full-time professional cricketers and, at the same time, have a smooth transition,” Ranatunga said. “What we decided was to expand the number of contracted players with SLC and provide them with suitable remuneration and, at the same time, coaching and practice facilities as the national cricketers so that, when the call-up came, they would be ready at any given time to replace anyone from the senior squad.”Today this concept has borne fruit to the extent that the performances of these younger players is putting pressure on the seniors for places in the national team, and some of the seniors don’t even want to take a rest between matches.”Ranatunga added the number of contracted players was expanded and classified into five categories – Sri Lanka (20 players), Sri Lanka A (15), Development (17), Academy (15) and Twenty20 (9). This included 15 potential cricketers earning contracts immediately after their school careers. The top national cricketers earn as much as around US$110,000 annually, and the lowest return for an A squad player is an estimated US$10,500. The Development squad player earns a monthly wage of Rs.60,000 (approx. US$530) and a Twenty20 squad player Rs.100,000 (approx. US$ 875). Overall, SLC spends in the region of US$ 2.3 million annually on contracts alone, according to sources. In addition, the contracted players in the Development and Academy squads receive cricket equipment worth Rs.80,000 (approx. US$700) each.Randiv and Udawatte are categorized as Sri Lanka A players; Lakmal, Pushpakumara and Thirimanne are part of the Development category and Perera and Chandimal have been classified as Academy players.”What we realized is we lose several potential cricketers when they find employment elsewhere and, as a result, don’t find the time to commit themselves to playing cricket,” Ranatunga said. “To address this trend we decided to contract the potential players into the Academy and provide them with a monthly allowance of about Rs. 40,000 (approx.US$350), making them full-time professional cricketers. The game is no longer confined to the high-profile groups but has extended to middle and lower income groups.”These different squads are provided with a similar coaching staff and facilities as the senior squad and given enough exposure by way of tours. In addition they also receive training in IT (computer) and English, public speaking, etiquette, financial management, motivation etc so that they develop other skills also and gain employment in different fields after their playing career.”Ranatunga praised the role played by the junior selection committee headed by Sunil Wikramanayake in identifying the future talented cricketers.”We want to expand this concept to the provinces and have at least 100 contracted players so that the player remains in his province and develops his skills as a cricketer instead of coming to Colombo. If you take the national teams, 90% of the cricketers are from the outstation. It is a costly exercise but it is the right way forward.”

Rohit Sharma triple flattens Gujarat

A round-up of the second day’s action from the seventh round of the Ranji Trophy Super League

Scorecard
Mumbai’s bats have continued to make headlines this season, but none more sensational than Rohit Sharma. “There are several batsmen who score a hundred on a given day in Ranji cricket. I need to continue and score and a really big knock to stand out,” Rohit told the after he batted himself to 145 on day one at the Brabourne Stadium. A day later Rohit walked the talk with the first triple-century of his career, an unbeaten 309 from 322 deliveries, that formed the fulcrum of a massive first-innings total, leaving a weary Gujarat facing a mountain to climb.Rohit was a hulk on the second day on a flat track, extending his overnight stand with Sushant Marathe (144) to 342. Marathe’s dismissal was followed by two wickets, but Vinayak Samant chipped in with an unbeaten 50 to further torment Gujarat in Rohit’s company. Rohit, whose previous best was 205, outdid that by some distance, hitting 36 fours and four sixes. Four of seven bowlers carried the burden of the bowling attack against an enormous innings, and it was legspinner Salil Yadav who leaked the most runs: 201 in 50 overs for one wicket. The bowlers even resorted to a negative line but Rohit was batting on a whole different level.”After hitting the first ball for four I felt like I could continue to bat like yesterday,” he told reporters after the day’s play. “The track was good and I knew it would be more easy for me once Gujarat opts for the new ball. I just wanted to take it ball by ball. I was prepared to play my natural game even if I get out. But after crossing 200 I didn’t want to take a chance.”
Scorecard
Hyderabad’s chances of avoiding relegation to the Plate League next season took a beating on day two against Tamil Nadu at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. They pressed on from 269 for 4 to 347, with Anoop Pai scoring 51, but a mute performance with the ball let them down majorly. Tamil Nadu’s openers Srikanth Anirudha (70) and Abhinav Mukund (66*) put on 96 after which Arun Karthik came out and made an unbeaten 49 to help Mukund get the score to 189 for 1. If Hyderabad get three points via a first-innings lead, they could equal Himachal Pradesh but the latter have one outright victory. It’s not looking too bright for Hyderabad.
Scorecard
A brisk 144 from Orissa’s Halhadar Das gave the visitors a 191 first-innings lead over Himachal Pradesh in Dharamsala, which was reduced to 144 by stumps. Resuming day two on 55 for 2, Orissa were boosted by Halhadar’s 155-ball effort and 53 from Niranjan Behera to put up 316. Halhadar tucked into the attack with gusto, adding 90 with Behera, and hit 20 fours and three sixes. Mohinder Sharma, with 5 for 102, carried Himachal Pradesh’s attack with determination. They then reached 47 for 2 at the close with defeat looming large.
Scorecard
Two wickets before stumps on day two at the Karnail Singh Stadium denied Punjab the day’s honours. Railways had been boosted from 191 for 6 to 276 thanks to Karan Sharma’s unbeaten 59 from the No. 8 spot, against a six-wicket haul from young Rahul Sharma. Punjab then made a good start after an early wicket, through Mayank Sharma (54) and Sunny Sohal (30), but Railways pegged them back. Murali Kartik, Railways’ captain, snapped up Sohal, after which Sidhana and Uday Kaul put together 86. From 123 for 2, however, Punjab lost Sidhana and Pankaj Dharmani for 0 in the space of three overs in the last hour of play.Group B
ScorecardA second day of bat-powered domination allowed Bengal to tighten their grip over Delhi at the Jadavpur University Ground. Delhi’s hopes of running into the lower order and aiding their chances of claiming the needed first-innings leadwere given a boost when Pradeep Sangwan dismissed Wriddhiman Saha for 120 to snap a 249-run stand, but in walked Bengal’s captain, Laxmi Shukla. Shukla eased himself in alongside Sourav Ganguly, and by the time the former India captain went for 150, followed by Saurashis Lahiri for 0, Shukla was firm. Ashok Dinda, back after making his first India appearance, made 41 and with Shukla carried Bengal close to 500. Shukla was last out for 132 from 137 balls. Bengal were further lifted by veteran workhorse Ranadeb Bose, who took out Delhi’s openers in his first 19 deliveries. Aditya Jain and Mithun Manhas put on 50 before stumps, leaving Delhi with much to do on day three.
Scorecard
A pair of centuries from two experienced players helped Baroda claim the second day’s honours in Pune. Baroda batted the entire day, moving from a 277-run deficit into a small lead and with it vital points, thanks to Connor Williams’ 18th ton and Shatrunjay Gaekwad’s maiden ton. Williams, in his 115th game, hit 129 and Gaekwad, son of former India opener Anshuman, made a patient 103. They put on 214 for the third wicket. Baroda lost two wickets in relative succession following Williams’ exit and will look to a vigilant Gaekwad for more.
Scorecard
Ganesh Satish’s second first-class century rallied Karnataka to a strong total on day two in Rajkot. From 45 from 41 balls overnight, Satish pressed on to 120, adding 125 for the fourth wicket with Amit Verma (68). Satish’s dismissal at 250 for 5 was followed by a century stand between Manish Pandey (55) and his captain Robin Uthappa (62 from 56 balls)as Karnataka put up 384. For Saurashtra, spinner Vishal Joshi picked up 4 for 77 and was supported by Kamlesh Makvana’s 3 for 82. The home side was given a good opening stand in the 16 overs remaining in the day, with Chirag Pathak dominating, but Saurashtra face a tough third day.

India's stand only hiccup in ICC progress – WADA

The World Anti-Doping Agency has said the ICC has made significant progress in implementing anti-doping measures in the last two years, with the BCCI’s stance against the whereabouts clause the only “hiccup”

Cricinfo staff17-Nov-2009The World Anti-Doping Agency’s director-general David Howman has said the ICC has made significant progress in implementing anti-doping measures in the last two years, with the BCCI’s stance against the whereabouts clause the only “hiccup”. Howman is scheduled to meet officials from the ICC and BCCI in Dubai on Wednesday to discuss the impasse over cricket’s anti-doping policy.”In the last 18 months they’ve [ICC] got rules, they’ve done testing, they’re doing out-of-competition testing so in that brief period of time they have done a heck of a lot,” Howman told “The only hiccup they have had is the Indian board (BCCI) has said they are not comfortable with this ‘whereabouts’ requirement.”That clause – which the Indian board rejected three months ago, thereby stalling implementation of the anti-doping code – is expected to be focus of the Dubai meeting, where the BCCI will be represented by its president Shashank Manohar and secretary N Srinivasan.”They [BCCI] have given a number of reasons and I am going to talk about those with them on Wednesday. Some of their concerns include an allegation that it [Wada’s code] is unconstitutional in India,” Howman said. “Well India signed on to the code as one of the first countries. The Indian Government is compliant so if there is part of India that is not compliant that is embarrassing for the government, particularly with things like the Commonwealth Games coming up.”The BCCI’s primary concern with the whereabouts clause is that it could pose a security threat to its players. Howman, however, said that the WADA’s system was so secure that even he did not have access to the location details and the ones who did had had thorough background checks. “I don’t have access to that [athlete] information, so that shows how strong we are about it,” Howman said. “We have four people in our organisation who have access. They have all been through full security, police checks and the like. So from my point of view there is nothing more that we can do.””The whole system is good, the individuals receiving the information are secure and when the player puts this information in, the access to the information is restricted to those who need it, which would be us and the ICC. Nobody in India.”Howman had spent six months in 2009 speaking to athlete groups and showing them that the system was, in fact, a simple one. He acknowledged the need for WADA to spell out the requirements clearly, in order to avoid misinterpretation, before putting such systems in place.

Ten Doeschate stars as Otago make it two in two

Ryan ten Doeschate’s bruising 64 from 32 broke the back of a mediocre Kandurata Maroons total, and all but secured Otago Volts’ place in the Champions League proper

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando18-Sep-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRyan ten Doeschate smashed 64 off 32 balls•BCCI

Ryan ten Doeschate’s bruising 64 from 32 broke the back of a mediocre Kandurata Maroons total, and all but secured Otago Volts’ place in the Champions League proper, while very nearly damning their opponents to the opposite fate. The match had been set up again by the discipline of the Otago’s fast men, who kept Kandurata down to 154 for 9, despite the best efforts of Upul Tharanga, who hit 76 from 56.Ten Doeschate had not played the first match of the qualifiers, having not been released in time from Essex to come to India. The match was finely poised at 45 for 2, when he arrived at the crease, but within three overs, he had injected Volt’s innings with the adrenaline that would not abate until the finish.Kandurata’s spinners had prospered in the first ten overs, but legspinner Kaushal Lokuarachchi could extract little turn from the surface, and it was off his first three balls that the match pivoted. Ten Doeschate charged the first, striking it long and straight, before hanging back to wallop his second six, over mid-on this time. The third six was swept flatter and squarer, and after that 20-run over, Otago needed only play sensibly to achieve the target.A short period of consolidation followed that burst, but the boundaries began again in earnest in the 15th over, with James Neesham joining in. A square boundary off Nuwan Kulasekara’s third over gave ten Doeschate his fifty off 26 balls, and when he had departed after another lucrative over, Otago needed only 9 from 17 balls. Neesham needed only five of those. In Kandurata’s innings, Tharanga was starved of his early penchant for off-side boundaries by a shrewd Otago strategy that prevented the kind of start he had achieved in their first match. McCullum placed a cover sweeper almost from the outset, and had his pace bowlers pitch it full and wide. If Tharanga flashed at the ball, he brought the two slips and catching infielders into play. If he played it along the ground, he would not muster enough power into the stroke to earn more than two.Kandurata hit only 25 in the Powerplay as a result, and it wasn’t until Nathan McCullum’s offspin was introduced that Tharanga’s innings finally gained traction. Two balls disappeared long and straight during the eighth over, and Tharanga exacted as heavy a toll in McCullum’s next over, which also went for 15.While he propelled the innings though, Otago made regular gains at the other end. Kumar Sangakkara and Lahiru Thirimanne had both hit fifties in the first match, but were dismissed cheaply here, as short spells from Nick Beard and ten Doeschate crimped the scoring rate.Having been 132 for 4 after 17 overs, Kandurata might have felt they should have surged beyond 160, but a fine 18th over from Ian Butler, from which three wickets were gleaned, left Kandurata at a sub-par total. Butler finished with the best figures for the Volts, earning 3 for 21, with James McMillan having taken 1 for 17 from his three overs. This was Otago’s 12th consecutive T20 win, the joint third longest streak in the format and, more importantly, leaves them on the verge of qualifying to the main tournament.

باريس سان جيرمان يتحرك لضم هاري كين
