The Argentine was a nominee for 2024 MLS Coach of the Year with Miami, and one of the most accomplished managers in the game, having previous stints with FC Barcelona in Spain and the Argentina national team.

ÂŁ2.5m ace Leeds want to sign this summer now ready to leave current club

Leeds United are aiming to bolster their ranks with a move for another new centre-back, it has been reported, as they eye a return to the Premier League.

Joe Rodon rejoins Leeds

In a bittersweet move for Daniel Farke's side, Joe Rodon has rejoined the club on a permanent basis in a £10m deal, as part of a move that saw teenage talent Archie Gray leave for Tottenham in a seperate deal worth £40m, but one that almost certainly opened the door for Rodon's arrival.

The Welsh defender was a mainstay of their Championship season, appearing 46 times across their campaign and fast becoming a fan favourite in Yorkshire.

He has penned a four-year deal at Elland Road, where he will likely continue to endear himself to the Leeds United faithful as he looks to steer them out of the Championship at the second time of asking.

Though failure to secure promotion back to the top flight last season left Leeds in financial peril, the BBC report that the sale of Gray and subsequent addition of Rodon "is believed to be enough to make the Elland Road club compliant with profit and sustainability rules", which will come as a boost to the Elland Road outfit as they look to push on with new signings this summer.

And they remain keen to add to their defensive ranks, something that they may have just been handed a massive boost in doing.

Defender admits he wants out

That comes as KAA Gent defender Jordan Torunarigha has admitted that he is happy to leave the Belgian club this summer amid interest from clubs across Europe, including Leeds.

The centre-back, who is down to the final year of his contract with Gent, is thought to be wanted by both Hoffenheim and Leeds United, with Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg having previously revealed that his price tag will be between £2m and £2.5m this summer should he depart, with Farke's side keen to sign him this summer rather than wait to try and grab him on a free.

Farke "would love" to sign ÂŁ40,000-a-week player for Leeds after Rodon

The centre-back is Leeds’ first summer signing.

ByCharlie Smith Jul 2, 2024

Now, Torunarigha has admitted that offers have come in, and that he is happy to move on this summer but only for the right side.

“There are very exciting and specific enquiries that I am dealing with,” the Nigerian centre-back explained. “I feel good, I’m in top shape and ready for the next step.

“I still have a year left on my contract and I’m not in a hurry. We’ll see what happens. I’m aiming for the highest possible sporting goals. That will definitely play a role in my decision.”

It remains unclear whether Leeds are one of the sides to have tabled an offer, but with the defender seemingly available and ready to move this summer, he could prove a bargain partner for Joe Rodon in the heart of the Whites defence.

The Inter Miami superstar may be edging closer to retirement but he still remains a cut above and demonstrated his quality yet again on Tuesday. Scaloni will certainly be hoping Messi doesn't call it a day anytime soon and admitted after the match that his captain never fails to "amaze" him and his staff with the national team.

WHAT SCALONI SAID

He told reporters: "He never ceases to amaze me. At one point I sit down and talk to Pablo (Aimar) and I tell him 'this is wonderful'. Enjoying this, being able to sit on this bench and see the things he does and his team supporting him. It is something wonderful, it never ceases to surprise us. Let him play as long as he can, that is the only thing I ask of him because it is a pleasure to see him and have him on a football pitch.”

Bob Willis Trophy match abandoned after Northamptonshire player tests positive for Covid-19

The player was not part of the squad involved in the game in Bristol against Gloucestershire but others had been in contact with him

Northamptonshire’s Bob Willis Trophy match at Bristol was abandoned after lunch on the opening day after a player in their squad tested positive for Covid-19.Gloucestershire had reached 66 for 6 when lunch was taken, but the players did not emerge after the interval and play was called off for the day shortly before 3pm.Northants have fielded largely different squads in the T20 Blast and Bob Willis Trophy this season, with only two of the team playing this game part of their most recent Blast fixture.”Although the player was not part of the group that travelled with the squad to Bristol (and has been self-isolating at home), further members of the Northamptonshire squad have been in contact with the player within 48 hours of the player developing Covid-19 symptoms,” the clubs said in a joint statement”Gloucestershire, Northamptonshire and the ECB are unified in the belief that player welfare is paramount and that no risks should be taken with the health and safety of the players, officials and administrators involved in this match.”The match has now been abandoned and the Northamptonshire squad will return home to Northamptonshire today.”The ECB will now assess whom the player has been in contact with recently before deciding upon the next step. Northants’ next fixture – a Blast game coincidentally also against Gloucestershire – is due to be played on Friday.County cricket has already seen at least two players miss matches due to enforced self-isolation this summer. Nick Gubbins missed Middlesex’s game against Kent as a precautionary measure after coming into contact with someone who had developed symptoms, while Jordan Cox missed the same fixture after breaking social-distancing protocols by agreeing to a photo with young fans after his double-hundred against Sussex.Players have not been asked to spend their time in a biosecure ‘bubble’ in county cricket, unlike international players. Instead, they have been asked to adhere to a range of protocols to minimise the risks of transmission, including travelling to games alone, regular temperature checks and health questionnaires, and signing up to a code of behaviour both at venues and when off-duty.There is nothing riding on the game, with neither team in contention to qualify for the Bob Willis Trophy final as group winners.

Aston Villa offered "magnificent" signing who’s just like Luiz

Well, what a season that was, eh Villans? Unai Emery has achieved unimaginable things with this crop of Aston Villa players, taking them from near relegation under Steven Gerrard to the Champions League.

It's important the Villa Park outfit now capitalise on this success in the transfer market and they are doing just that already.

Ross Barkley looks as though he's on his way to the Midlands, re-signing after Luton Town were relegated.

A deal is reportedly as good as done, but who's next in line for Monchi and Co? Well, it could be another midfielder.

Aston Villa looking to bolster their midfield

The addition of Barkley is a very sensible move for those behind the scenes at Villa Park. The Englishman was fabulous for the Hatters, enjoying a real career revival that even earned him shouts for a Euros call-up. In total, the midfielder contributed with five goals and four assists in league action.

However, they have actually now been offered another central player. According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Carlos Soler is the name now linked.

The player is not keen to leave PSG but he is seemingly not in Luis Enrique's plans in Paris right now. As a result, it's suggested a loan move could suit all parties.

Villa are one of the sides to have been noted of his availability this summer but it's stated that they have taken that no further at the moment.

How Carlos Soler compares to Douglas Luiz

One of the primary concerns for Emery this summer will be how he can hold onto some of the club's main men, chiefly Douglas Luiz.

joao-palhinha-douglas-luiz-liverpool-opinion

Champions League football will no doubt help but the Brazilian has been consistently linked with a move away from Villa Park. Arsenal lodged several rejected bids in 2022 and they are still hovering around the midfielder.

If he does leave then Soler would certainly be a good replacement. According to FBref, the two players are noted as being 'similar' to each other, but why exactly is that?

So, the numbers are extraordinarily close in some areas. When it comes to progressing the ball, whether it be through carries or passing there is a difference but their underlying passing statistics are incredibly alike.

Their pass accuracy is identical, they made a very similar number of key passes per 90 minutes and they both seemingly occupy the same role from the centre of the pitch, playing a near identical number of passes into the final third and the penalty area.

Luiz does seemingly do more defending – hardly a surprise given Soler plays for PSG – but it bodes well that the Spaniard is adept in that department too.

Described as a "magnificent" player by The Guardian's Sid Lowe, the former Valencia man has been a bit part of proceedings at the Parc des Princes. However at Villa, particularly if Luiz departed, he could find himself one of the main men.

Deal close: Aston Villa set to sign 'unbelievable' Luiz replacement

Aston Villa will look to add more quality to their squad after an excellent season even if Douglas Luiz does leave.

Umar Akmal ban appeal to be heard on July 13 after coronavirus delay

Akmal was banned for three years by the PCB for not reporting corrupt approaches

Umar Akmal’s appeal against his three-year ban will be heard next Monday on July 13 by an independent adjudicator at the National High Performance Centre in Lahore. The adjudicator is a former Supreme Court judge, Justice (retired) Faqir Mohammad Khokhar, and notices have been issued to both Akmal and the PCB with regards to the timing of the hearing. The appeal was set to be heard on June 11 but became yet another victim of the coronavirus pandemic, coming at a time when cases were increasing rapidly across Pakistan and lockdowns were imposed across Lahore. As a result, it was postponed; and now that the date of the new hearing has been confirmed, Akmal is set to learn his fate in a week’s time.Akmal was banned for three years by the PCB on April 27 for failing to report corrupt approaches and was found guilty of two breaches of the board’s anti-corruption code. The charges come under Article 2.4.4, which deals with “failing to disclose to the PCB Vigilance and Security Department (without unnecessary delay) full details of any approaches or invitations received by the Participant to engage in Corrupt Conduct under this Anti-Corruption Code”. While each charge carries a three-year ban, they are being run concurrently. The severity of the punishment was at the time considered surprising, but it emerged he had been handed the stiffer-than-expected penalty for failing to show sufficient remorse. Players who had fallen foul in a similar manner to Akmal previously were handed far lighter sanctions, with Mohammad Irfan banned in 2017 for six months, while Mohammad Nawaz was given a two-month ban.Three weeks later, Akmal announced he would contest the decision on grounds that the length of the ban was unprecedented for a breach of the nature he had been found guilty of committing. According to the PCB’s code, the appeal does not mean a fresh hearing will have to be conducted, with the appeals process limiting itself to “a consideration of whether the decision being appealed was erroneous”.The ban has come as the most significant setback to 29-year-old Akmal, whose career has been littered with controversy. Repeated incidents of indiscipline since his debut in 2009 have meant that he has been fined and suspended on several occasions; and an inability to stay fit has led to penalties as well. In September 2017, he copped a three-month ban for publicly criticising then Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur, and earlier this year, was reprimanded by the PCB for misbehaving after failing a fitness test, reportedly exposing himself to a trainer in frustration at one point.

Yuvraj Singh arrives, as India dispatch Australia in style

The 18-year-old made a sparkling 84, while fellow rookie Zaheer Khan also did well

The RetroReport by Shashank Kishore05-May-2020

The world champions are taking an early flight home from Nairobi.Australia had beaten India in seven straight ODIs prior to this to be the outright favourites coming into the first quarter-final of the ICC Knockouts, but a young Indian team looking to emerge from the shadows of the match-fixing scandal made quite a statement. That it was an 18-year old Yuvraj Singh, with his gum-chewing nonchalance and elegance, and birthday boy Zaheer Khan who left their imprint on the big stage made it all the more special for India.Had new captain Sourav Ganguly stuck to his plan of dropping down to No. 4 and opening with rookie S Sriram to lengthen the middle order, Yuvraj may have not even had the opportunity to play. But he was talked out of the idea by the senior players and Aunshuman Gaekwad, the head coach, and that set the stage for Yuvraj in what was his second ODI, but the first time he got to bat in an international.Yuvraj’s 84 off 80, which powered India to 265, stood out for many reasons. He was fearless, his ball-striking was clean, ability to pick gaps top-notch and his match-awareness – twice he was alert to possibilities of sneaking in an overthrow – allowed India the opportunity to claw back despite losing more wickets than comfortable ever since Sachin Tendulkar’s quickfire start, where he got stuck into Glenn McGrath.Even with Tendulkar, Ganguly and Rahul Dravid gone, Yuvraj didn’t shelve his natural game. There was a punch to his shots that made it appear as if he wasn’t nervous, the pull made multiple appearances and just his casual demeanour at the crease – not to be mistaken for laziness – gave you the impression that he had a lot of time to play hit shots. His partnerships of 40 and 64 with Vinod Kambli and Robin Singh respectively, helped arrest a middle order collapse. But batting wasn’t his only contribution on the night. A sensational diving catch while being airborne to send back pinch hitter Ian Harvey, and a potentially game-changing direct hit to run out Michael Bevan which came on the back of Ricky Ponting’s wicket, turned the tide in India’s favour. From a comfortable 159 for 3, Australia had slipped to 163 for 5.Bevan had pushed the ball to mid-off and instinctively took off for a single, until he saw Yuvraj swoop in and effect a direct hit at the bowler’s end to fall an inch or two short. Until then, Bevan had made an industrious 42, built around working the ball into the gaps and finding the odd boundary, making Ganguly’s task that much tougher because India needed to identify a fifth bowler.Ganguly turned to Tendulkar for his bag of offspin, legspin and a deceptive googly, and the move paid off. Ganguly got more than he would have bargained for, because Tendulkar not only sent down seven economical overs but also managed to dismiss Ponting. All summer, nine months ago, India hadn’t come close to winning in Australia. This was their chance, but Australia still had the ice-cool Steve Waugh at the crease. Suddenly, the blazing start and the asking rate, which they were well ahead of courtesy fireworks up top from Adam Gilchrist, started to catch up.Soon after Bevan and Ponting were dismissed, Damien Martyn was bowled off a Robin offcutter and the pressure was back on Australia. Most of the responsibility lay on Steve Waugh’s shoulders, but the bulk of the scoring from there was done by Brett Lee, who took on Anil Kumble with a six over long-off, a sweep to the fine-leg boundary and a cut to point for four to collect 15 off the 41st over. The match was poised with Australia needing 42 off 36 and three wickets in hand, but Khan’s accurate line got rid of Steve Waugh when he made room and missed a length delivery, and Ajit Agarkar followed it with a wicket maiden that included Lee’s scalp to edge India ahead again. Jason Gillespie’s three fours off Agarkar in the 46th over gave India a scare again but he eventually handed a simple catch to Robin and India stormed into the semi-finals by stunning the world champions.

Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry return to New Zealand squad for Australia ODIs

New Zealand have welcomed the pace attack that took them to within a hair’s breadth of a maiden World Cup triumph back into their ODI squad. After beating India 3-0 in the ODIs at home, New Zealand travel to Australia this month, where they have never won a one-day series before. And having missed that convincing series win against India, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry have all been declared fit for the series in Australia. Kyle Jamieson retains his spot, following an impressive display in the Test series against India, with Hamish Bennett and Scott Kuggeleijn the men to miss out.All three returning seamers were injured for, or during, New Zealand’s Test series defeat in Australia, but have resumed playing since. Ferguson and Henry have both played one first-class game and two 50-over fixtures since their returns, while Boult starred in the Test series win against India.Ferguson told New Zealand media that he was determined not to rush back into top-flight cricket, but now he’s fully good to go.* “With my role and the style of cricket I play, trying to bowl quick for long periods of time, it’s hard to rush back. Early on in my career I rushed back a couple of times, wanting to play for Auckland, and potentially came back too early. But now I know my body really well and I know if I get good game time under my belt, then I’ll have confidence and I can just focus on the game and my overs.”I was sort of not bowling much month and a half ago, two months ago, but now back to fully playing and you sort of forget the times you were sitting on the couch – it’s just great to be out playing and I’m excited to get out amongst the Black Caps group again.”With Jamieson coming through so spectacularly in the India Test series, the competition for places in the New Zealand XI has gone up a notch. Ferguson welcomed the challenge, and credited a strong domestic-cricket structure for putting New Zealand in this enviable position. “I think it’s great – I’m a huge believer in competition within a squad, I think it drives the team to be better. It speaks to the depth we have in domestic cricket, which doesn’t get talked about as much as it should – our domestic game is actually extremely good. We play on good tracks and it’s tough cricket, and that’s now showing through with the Black Caps.”I think that kind of competition within the squad is only going to make us grow stronger. Sure, it makes us who have played think ‘Oh gosh, I’ve got to work harder’, but that’s surely the best thing possible – if we’re all working harder and trying to get better, then the team’s going to be better for it.”Head coach Gary Stead was equally pleased to have such a strong bowling line-up – and in-form squad – at his disposal. “Playing Australia in Australia is one of the great challenges in world cricket and you know you will be severely tested in all aspects of the game. Our one-day unit is a pretty settled one with plenty of experience and I think that showed in the recent series against India.”It’s great to welcome back the class of Trent, Matt and Lockie who spearheaded our run to the World Cup final last year. Kyle’s made every post a winner since his international debut this season and he’ll be a handy asset to have in Australia.”New Zealand ODI squad: Kane Williamson (c), Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham (wk), Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor*
