Newcastle: Lee Ryder slams Joelinton

Lee Ryder has slammed the performance of Joelinton despite Newcastle United winning 2-1 away at Burnley in the Premier League.

Allan Saint-Maximin came on just before the hour mark at Turf Moor to turn the game on its head after Steve Bruce’s team found themselves 1-0 down at half-time through a Matej Vydra goal. The former Nice attacker came up with a goal and an assist to give the visitors what could turn out to be a vital three points in their battle to avoid being relegated from the Premier League.

Saint-Maximin actually came on for Joelinton, a substitution which clearly had the desired impact, as Ryder was not very impressed at all with the latter’s performance. Writing in his latest player ratings piece for The Chronicle, the journalist gave the 24-year-old a measly 4/10 overall rating, the lowest out of any Newcastle player, claiming that he was ‘very poor’.

Joelinton was ‘very poor’ for Newcastle

Joelinton was indeed ‘very poor’ for the Magpies as Ryder claimed, as the Brazilian lost out on seven of his duels, the joint-most out of any of his teammates to have set foot on the pitch, and he also lost possession of the ball on seven separate occasions (Sofascore).

Given that the striker only managed a mere 22 touches of the ball in total, he lost it roughly every 3.1 touches on average, pretty much summing up just how poor he was against Sean Dyche’s men.

Nonetheless, Joelinton will need to put in much better performances than he did against the Clarets if he is to remain in Bruce’s starting XI from now until the end of the season.

Leeds making big mistake with Douglas Costa

Leeds United would be heading for an expensive mistake by making a move for Juventus star Douglas Costa in this summer’s transfer window.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks and months have suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side could be interested in signing the Brazil international, and now there has been an update on his potential exit from Juventus this summer.
According to Italian publication Calciomercato, the Bianconeri are willing to let the 31-cap star leave on a free transfer, despite his current deal with the Turin club not actually expiring until next year.
The report added that Juventus see no long-term future for Costa in Italy, while his massive wages are also considered as a stumbling block.

Radrizzani must block a move

Despite not being in the best of form this season – he has managed just one goal all campaign – Costa’s technical ability is unquestionable, with former Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri raving about the kind of game-changer he can be.
He said: “He’s an extraordinary weapon for this time of the season, when teams are most at risk of dropping off in the second half. He can change a game with his introduction. Let’s not tell him that…He understands, but we have to keep him motivated and start him every now and then.”
While he may still be able to offer a lot to Leeds, the financial implications of doing such a deal could cause some serious problems at Elland Road.
Earning a reported £195,000 per week, even Costa’s current wages would comfortably place him as Leeds’ highest earner – for context, the man who occupies that spot right now, summer signing Rodrigo, is on £105,000 per week.
While Marcelo Bielsa will be keen to strengthen his squad, the one thing he won’t want is any ‘big-time Charlies’ or those players who come in for one big payday.
It would also send out a very questionable message to the rest of the club’s players who have been playing week-in and week-out for Leeds and might set a dangerous precedent on future negotiations over contract extensions.
If Costa comes in and immediately takes that top earner’s status, what’s to stop the rest of Leeds’ key players to come knocking on the door asking for parity or even something more than what the Brazilian is on?
It’s exactly why Andrea Radrizzani must block any Leeds move for this Juventus star this summer.
Meanwhile, Leeds must unleash this academy starlet who has shades of Raphinha…

Celtic pundit exclusive: Hoops may be thinking of Gerrard-like appointment

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Dean Windass analysed the thinking behind Celtic potentially hiring Frank Lampard or John Terry as their next manager.

The Hoops are currently without a boss after Neil Lennon departed the club, handing in his resignation last Wednesday.

That came following the club’s 1-0 defeat to Ross County. They’re considerably off the pace in the race for the SPFL title and their fierce rivals, Rangers, now need a very minimal number of points to win the league.

It will be the first time in over nine years that the Gers have managed to do so. Thus, whoever walks into the job will have an almighty battle on their hands to reclaim Celtic’s dominance of Scottish football.

Football FanCast quizzed Windass this week over potential candidates for the job and he thought that the likes of Lampard or Terry could mean that the Bhoys are thinking of following Rangers and making a Steven Gerrard-liked appointment.

He began: “You know, it’s like the domino effect. I think that Frank’s on the same par as Stevie and so is John Terry. He’s a big name in the game and just starting out his managerial career, which obviously Stevie was. In his first job in charge, he’s being successful, so Celtic are probably thinking on those lines.”

Windass concluded: “I think the supporters will wish Lenny all the best, they’ve gone through a tough time this season, not just with results but also with Covid, and he’s obviously found he can take the club as far as he can go now and let somebody else have a bash at it. So if it’s John or Frank or anybody, it’s a massive football club, so they won’t be short of applicants, I know that for a fact.”

Lampard has just recently left his post with Chelsea after being sacked following a run of poor results. His former Blues teammate, Terry, is meanwhile assistant manager to Dean Smith at Aston Villa.

The former has previously been hailed for his amazing connections when Pat Nevin spoke about the possibility of the 42-year-old joining. Whether or not Lampard or Terry would like to cross the border, however, is another matter.

Celtic receive loan enquiry for Ntcham

Celtic have received an enquiry from Premier League side Newcastle United regarding midfielder Olivier Ntcham, according to reports.

Ntcham to leave Parkhead?

The 24-year-old has found himself ostracised at Parkhead this season having started justÂ10 games in all competitions for Neil Lennon’s side, with the likes of Ismaila Soro and David Turnbull ahead of him in the pecking order.

Ntcham was denied a deadline day move last October to Ligue 1 side Brest after making it clear he wanted to leave Celtic but may have his wish granted this month.

Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie reported that the Magpies have made a loan enquiry for the French central midfielder, as he enters the final 18 months of his current contract.

Since his £4.5m move from Manchester City in 2017, Ntcham has scored 24 times and provided 13 assists in 147 appearances for Celtic, with 18 caps to his name while representing France at U21-level (TransferMarkt).

Transfer Tavern Verdict

While Celtic’s season goes from bad to worse after their defeat to St Mirren on Saturday, this could be the start of the clearout that was reported by Football Insider earlier this month.

Whether that clearout has anything to do with Ntcham remains to be seen, but in reality this is a transfer that some supporters have wanted for some time.

Newcastle would be a good move for the Frenchman, offering him a route into Premier League football without the pressure of joining a side chasing silverware.

Man Utd must sell Phil Jones in January

According to Eurosport’s Dean Jones, West Bromwich Albion are reportedly eyeing up a move for out-of-favour Manchester United outcast Phil Jones.

What’s the word?

Jones has yet to feature for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side so far this season, having been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

And it appears a reunion could be on the cards, with West Brom boss Sam Allardyce keen to reunite with his former defender in the January transfer window.

However, they will face stiff competition to secure his services, as 90min claim Newcastle United are also looking to land the former England international on loan.

It’s time to go

The 28-year-old made his first-team debut for Blackburn under former Rovers boss Allardyce during the 1-0 win away at Nottingham Forest in the League Cup all the way back in 2009.

‘Big Sam’ even went so far as to say that Jones would be given the England captain’s armband one day but it’s fair to say that it hasn’t panned out the way everyone hoped it would have done.

It’s been quite a dramatic fall from grace for the centre-back who was once tipped to become the greatest player in the club’s history by none other than Sir Alex Ferguson himself.

The fringe player has failed to cement a place in Solskjaer’s squad, let alone the starting line-up, as he has struggled with injuries, lack of fitness and poor form over the past few years alone.

His injury struggles have done very little to disguise his defensive errors as he has developed a somewhat unsavoury reputation for making a series of high-profile mistakes.

Under Solskjaer, it seems there is no place for Jones, who earns around £75,000-per-week at Old Trafford, as Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof seem to be his preferred pairing, with Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe jostling for position in the pecking order.

Valued at £5m via Transfermarkt, United simply must bite the bullet and cash in on Jones, who is currently under contract until 2023 with the option for a further year, as Solskjaer clearly has no confidence in his ability any more.

Paolo Guerrero e Sheik preocupam o Santa Cruz.

Newcastle missed a perfect opportunity to sign Burnley’s Dwight McNeil

Newcastle should have pulled out all the stops to sign Burnley star Dwight McNeil in the summer transfer window.

What was the story?

The Chronicle suggested back in April that the England youth international was on the radar of the Magpies for the summer, and that the winger – valued at £35m – could have been allowed to leave Turf Moor.

The report added that the Magpies were “alerted to his availability by sources close to the player’s agency Unique Sports Management who also represent Toon players Jamaal Lascelles, Dwight Gayle, Paul Dummett and Karl Darlow”.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche admitted that he could see McNeil leaving the club, whilst the Clarets’ chairman opened the door for a potential move by revealing the financial impact placed upon the club by recent events.

Missed opportunity

Left-footed, incredibly talented at dribbling, and capable of moments of magic. Sound familiar for Newcastle fans? The Magpies bore witness to one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attackers on his day in Hatem Ben Arfa, with the Frenchman always having the potential to do something spectacular in his locker – you only have to look at his wonderful solo goal against Bolton to see that.

Last season in the Premier League, McNeil racked up six assists, whilst he averaged an impressive 1.3 shots, 1.4 key passes and two dribbles per game. As well as being capable of driving at opposition defences with his close control, the Englishman has got that ice-cold composure when he gets close to goal.

Burnley boss Dyche said: “He’s a really good player, he’s improving, his calmness at the end – I’m saying get it in the corner – but he cuts in, and his calmness to cross it into a dangerous area, and then gets his reward. Before then, his calmness to dribble out of trouble – he’s a really good player, really good, and he can only mature.”

Whilst he would have cost a pretty penny, at just 20, McNeil no doubt would have more than proven his value at St James’ Park.
