Srinath replaces Nehra for Champions Trophy final

Veteran medium-pacer Javagal Srinath is set to replace Ashish Nehra for the final of the Champions Trophy 2002 which India will play on Sunday. In an about turn from their earlier position, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) acceded to the team’s wishes and recalled Srinath, who is currently playing for Leicestershire in England.Newly appointed secretary of the BCCI, SK Nair said in a statement that the BCCI had agreed to the replacement and this was then okayed by the newly formed selection committee. The International Cricket Council too gave the necessary permission to the Indian team.Only recently, the chairman of the selection committee, former Karnataka and India cricketer Brijesh Patel, had said that he would try to persuade Srinath to change his mind and return to both Test and one-day cricket. The honorary secretary of the BCCI also confirmed that Srinath had agreed to leave England immediately and fly to Colombo in order to be here in time for the final.Nehra injured his bowling hand when he attempted a run out off his bowling against South Africa. The Delhi medium-pacer split the webbing between his index and middle fingers and required five stitches.

West Brom: Kevin Campbell drops Trevoh Chalobah transfer verdict

Former West Bromwich Albion striker Kevin Campbell believes that Trevoh Chalobah would be a good signing for the Championship club amid reports that he could join the Baggies.

The Lowdown: West Brom get busy ahead of 2021/22

Moving into 2021/22, Valerien Ismael will be desperate to bring in high-profile signings to boost his side in their promotion push following Premier League relegation two months ago.

Making inroads in the transfer market, the West Midlands club have acquired the services of former Barnsley captain Alex Mowatt on a three-year-contract [BBC].

They are now in the hunt for another potential summer recruit in Chalobah [Football Insider], and Campbell has offered his take on the nature of this scenario.

The Latest: Campbell backs ‘great’ Chalobah to sign

Speaking in an interview with Football Insider, the 51-year-old stated: “I think he’d be good signing for West Brom.

“Let’s be honest, Trevoh doesn’t want to come back to Chelsea and not be playing games. He would rather go out on loan and play football.

“He did a great job at FC Lorient last season and now perhaps he wants a different challenge.

“Remember he has played in the Championship before so he knows what it’s all about. I think he would be a smart signing.”

The Verdict: Chalobah would be an ideal signing for West Brom

Campbell correctly indicated the need for the Sierra Leone-born centre-back to play regular football at a critical stage of his development, something he is unlikely to attain at Chelsea.

In 2020/21, Chalobah enjoyed an impressive season on loan at Ligue 1 side Lorient, registering four goal contributions in 30 appearances with two goals and two assists [Transfermarkt].

He has also demonstrated quality within his capacity to prevent dangerous attacking situations. He managed 2.4 interceptions per match during his loan spell in France last term [WhoScored], a better average than anyone who played for West Brom in 2020/21 [WhoScored].

At 22, the defender still has many years ahead of him to develop into an established top-level player. He could be afforded that opportunity at The Hawthorns and, with 79 previous Championship appearances to his name, it seems that he would be an ideal addition for West Brom heading into the forthcoming campaign.

Spurs legend pinpoints one area Paratici must fix - exclusive

Former Tottenham Hotspur star Graham Roberts insists that the club have to fix their defence this summer, potentially needing to sign three players to do so.

Spurs have appointed Fabio Paratici as their managing director of football, and he will be a key part of the club’s summer, as he looks to identify new players and also move them on.

Roberts believes that the club need to make fixing the club’s defence a priority as they look to compete at the top end of the league once again.

He says that left-back Sergio Reguilon has the ability to become an excellent player, but believes two new centre-backs are required, along with a right-back.

And he has made the claim that Paratici may have to pay as much as £150m to do so.

It is a major job for Paratici to do, and it remains to be seen if three defensive players will be recruited this summer.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, the former Spurs skipper said: “We need a back four. The left-back’s decent, he gives silly goals away, alright, we understand that, he was a bit nervous, but I’m sure he can become really, really good.

“But you need a right-back, you need a centre-half and you need a centre-half. That’s £100 million, or £120 million, £150 million; if you want two decent centre-halves, they’re going to cost you £40 or £45m, that’s £90m.”

A formação completa tinha Sidão, Buffarini, Maicon, Rodrigo Caio e Júnior; João Schmidt, Araruna e Cícero; Luiz Araújo, Cueva e Pratto.

West Ham now eyeing Olsen move

Writing on Twitter, Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari has made a West Ham United transfer claim involving Sweden international and AS Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

The Lowdown: West Ham eye new goalkeepers?

Despite current number one Lukasz Fabianski recently signing a contract extension at the club, West Ham have still been tipped to target new goalkeepers this summer.

The Hammers have mainly been linked to West Bromwich Albion shot stopper Sam Johnstone as they scour the market for Fabianski’s long term replacement.

The Poland international, 36, has entered the twilight phase of his career and West Ham will need to start thinking about who may be his rightful heir.

The Latest: West Ham now want Olsen…

Longari, writing on his social media, has now claimed that West Ham are one of the clubs eyeing Sweden international Olsen – with the ace impressing at times over Euro 2020.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-2/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, the journalist says the Irons, Real Sociedad and Lille are among the clubs contemplating a move this summer.

“Confirmation of strong interest in Robin Olsen of the Roma,” explained Longari (via Twitter).

“More polls concerning West Ham and Lille which, however, could focus on Leo Jardim as a starter next season.”

The Verdict: Good option?

Despite finding game time severely limited whilst on loan at Everton over 2020/2021, with the 31-year-old starting just seven Premier League matches, Olsen has perhaps emerged as a good depth option depending on the price.

He enjoyed a fine Euro 2020 in parts, earning high praise for his individual heroics, while Olsen has also drawn acclaim from Italian goalkeeping great Walter Zenga.

The Inter Milan legend is a huge admirer, branding him ‘amazing’ in an interview with the Athletic last year.

Much will depend on his valuation, though, with West Ham apparently prioritising other positions in the shape of a permanent deal for Jesse Lingard, new centre-back and star striker (Claret & Hugh).

QPR dealt blow in Ryan Porteous pursuit

Queens Park Rangers have been dealt a huge blow to their hopes of bringing Ryan Porteous to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Scottish Sun, who claim that Turkish giants Galatasaray have now entered the race for the Hibernian centre-back, with the Super Lig side believed to be preparing an offer for the 22-year-old in the coming weeks.

Porteous had previously been linked with a move to QPR, with it being reported that the Rs’ director of football Les Ferdinand had been personally scouting the £630k-rated man over the course of last season.

However, with the potential of playing Champions League football for Galatasaray next season, should the Turkish side indeed go on to make an offer for the youngster, they would very much appear to be in the driving seat for his signature.

Warburton will be gutted

Considering just how impressive Porteous was for Hibernian last year, news of Galatasaray’s interest in the defender will undoubtedly come as a gutting blow for Mark Warburton, who will be hoping to build a side capable of mounting a push for the play-offs next term over the summer.

Indeed, over his 34 Scottish Premiership appearances last season, the 22-year-old helped Hibs keep 11 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.5 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and winning 6.9 duels per game.

These metrics saw the £2.7k-per-week centre-back earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.01, ranking him as Jack Ross’ seventh-best performer in a Hibernian side that finished in third place in the Scottish top flight.

As such, the addition of Porteous to Warburton’s options in the centre of defence ahead of next season would have provided the 58-year-old with very impressive depth in the position, with the 22-year-old’s potential signing coming after QPR’s capture of Jordy de Wijs from Hull City.

Although, the reports would appear to suggest that Galatasaray have not firmed up their interest with a concrete offer just yet, meaning that, at present, there still remains a slither of hope regarding a deal for the man Darren McGregor dubbed a “top player.”

As of now however, Porteous may not be on his way to QPR, and Warburton will be desperately disappointed.

PCB boss defends Faisal's inclusion

The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Lt Gen Tauqir Zia has “strongly” defended the inclusion of young Faisal Iqbal as 16th player for next week’s Sharjah Cup

05-Apr-2002The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Lt Gen Tauqir Zia has “strongly” defended the inclusion of young Faisal Iqbal as 16th player for next week’s Sharjah Cup.Tauqir, in a press statement, admitted that Faisal had been included in the side on his instructions but dismissed claims that he had taken the decision under any pressure. He termed the criticizm on Faisal’s inclusion as “most unfair”.”It is a declared policy of the PCB to groom the potential players and give them the necessary exposure. “It is of paramount importance to keep those players in harness who are on the fringe and can be useful to the team in the build up for the World Cup.”Faisal Iqbal has been with the Pakistan squad for the last one and a half year and has also performed well in the domestic season. It was, therefore, felt that he should be included as the 16th player, a decision that I took purely on merit and without any pressure whatsoever,” Tauqir said.Faisal will be proceeding at non-playing member as according to tournament rules, only 15 players can take part. However, Faisal can replace any injured player which appears to be the case as Younis Khan and Yousuf Youhana are on casualty list.

Everton fans react to Kean’s Italy omission

Everton striker Moise Kean will not be heading to the European Championship this summer.

The 21-year-old, who spent the season on loan at Paris Saint-Germain, has failed to make Roberto Mancini’s updated 28-man Italy squad, which was trimmed from 34 on Sunday (Liverpool Echo).

Kean had looked set to be involved for Italy

Kean was in the starting line-up on Friday night as Italy faced San Marino in a friendly but he was withdrawn at half-time after failing to find the net against the side ranked 210th and last in the world.

According to PSGhub, Kean picked up an injury in the game, explaining his exclusion from Mancini’s reduced squad.

The 21-year-old scored 16 goals for PSG this season, more than Neymar in fewer minutes played, but he had not been a success at Everton, netting just four times in 37 appearances so far for his parent club.

Fabrizio Romano relayed the news of Kean’s Italy omission and also offered the latest on his future. PSG are apparently in negotiations with Everton over a permanent deal for the frontman.

The Blues are supposedly willing to sell him, having spent an initial £25.1m to recruit him from Juventus in 2019. The player is now valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt.

Everton fans flock to Kean update

These Everton fans on Twitter took a dim view of Kean’s omission from the updated Italy squad, with some alluding to Graeme Souness’ criticism of the striker upon his arrival at Goodison Park two years ago.
