Real Madrid fans should keep their eyes peeled on Takefusa Kubo this weekend

La Liga is finally back this weekend as we bid farewell to the international break for now.

Real Madrid will be travelling away to Mallorca on Saturday evening and seeing how the gap between them and the second-placed Barcelona is only two points wide, Los Blancos will definitely be on the hunt for all three points by all means necessary.

But interestingly enough, this particular clash might be even more exciting for the Galacticos’ fans than it first seems.

Of course, their fans won’t really need an excuse to watch that game in any case but seeing how a young, up and coming talent is likely to play for Mallorca on Saturday, this could be something they won’t want to miss, especially considering that player is none other than their own loanee wonderkid – Takefusa Kubo.

Kubo was Real Madrid’s big scoop of the summer. The Japanese spent quite some time in Barcelona’s La Masia but now he’s donning the royal white of Real Madrid.

Still, considering he is still just 18-years-old and with no La Liga experience per se, Los Blancos decided to send him out on loan.

Watch Lionel Messi and Gareth Bale answer the internet’s weirdest questions in the video below…

And it just so happens to be that they decided Mallorca is the right place for the youngster’s development. Now, Kubo might face his own club this weekend and it’s bound to be an exciting clash.

So far, the 18-year-old has accumulated 322 minutes from four games in total for his new club.

He also managed to start in two of those games and already has one assist to his name. Apart from that, Kubo’s numbers are not outstanding but he is a young player who’s still trying to adapt and improve.

The Japanese Messi, as he has been described, has recorded 0.8 shots, 0.3 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per game so far. He also averaged 12.2 passes per game with an accuracy of 67.1%.

Clearly, those numbers could be higher but considering he’s a young player who’s currently at a newly-promoted side that’s struggling to keep up with the rest of the competitors in La Liga, Kubo has still been fairly impressive.

The future is definitely bright for the young Japanese prodigy, and if everything goes according to plan, he will be the one to lead Real Madrid’s revolution in the not so distant future.

But first, let’s see how he does this weekend.

Man City fans stunned by reports of new contract talks for John Stones

[ad_pod ]

After the departure of the iconic Vincent Kompany this summer, John Stones would undeniably have been dreaming of taking the Belgian’s place at the heart of the Manchester City defence.

The England international has endured a mixed time at the Etihad since arriving in a big-money deal from fellow Premier League side Everton, with injuries and form playing a big part in his struggles.

Despite that, Italian journalist Nicolo Schira has claimed the Citizens are “in talks” to renew Stones’ contract until 2024, and the club’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain, has offered him new wages of €7m (£6.1m) a year, plus bonuses.

After hearing the reports of a potential new deal for the centre-back, City fans took to Twitter to voice their frustrations about the situation.

Many supporters of the Manchester side slammed the reported decision, and insisted Stones has shown no signs of improvement since joining the club.

Some fans pointed to the 25-year-old’s poor record with injuries as another major reason why the defender should not be handed a new contract, whilst a couple even called for him to be let go.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino on course to repeat Champions League mistake

[ad_pod ]After Football London’s Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Alasdair Gold confirmed on Tuesday that neither Serge Aurier nor Danny Rose have travelled for the Champions League clash against Olympiacos on Wednesday, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino is already on course to repeat the same mistake that almost cost the club in 2018/19.

The Argentine has been upfront when saying that he is going to utilise his squad and rotate his team for their upcoming European clashes, but it has to be a concern after what happened in Europe’s elite club competition last season.

The north London outfit looked set to be eliminated having only picked up one point from their opening three group games against Inter Milan, Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven, before two wins and a draw eventually saw them scrape through to the round of 16.

In their defeat against the former, Pochettino decided to omit previous regulars Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld from the matchday 18 for their opener, with his side conceding two late goals to lose 2-1 at the San Siro.

Next up against Barcelona, the former Southampton boss had to manage without the injured Jan Vertonghen, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Serge Aurier and Mousa Dembele against the La Liga giants at Wembley, in a match which ended 4-2 to the visitors.

Then, against PSV in their third fixture they once again let a lead slip by drawing 2-2 in the Netherlands having seen Hugo Lloris sent off.

Those are three examples of the sorts of things that can happen in this competition and why it should never be taken for granted, as Spurs look to go one better than last year’s final appearance.

That clash against Barca especially surely proves that you should always take advantage of having fit and in-form first-team players at your disposal, even if it may upset those that may not getting a game.

Aurier shone from right-back against Crystal Palace at the weekend in what was his first appearance of the season for Tottenham, yet he finds himself left behind in London for this clash – confusing to say the least given his lack of football and the fact he should be full of confidence.

If Spurs do get off to a bad start against Olympiacos tonight following plenty of rotation, there is no doubt Pochettino will have a lot to answer for.

Liverpool midfielder Fabinho suffers cramp during Super Cup success

[ad_pod ]Liverpool eventually overcame Chelsea on penalties to win the Super Cup in Istanbul on Wednesday night, but the success may have come at a cost ahead of the weekend.120 minutes wasn’t enough to separate the two Premier League clubs, and it meant that some Reds individuals played 210 minutes of football in the space of five days – one of those was midfielder Fabinho. It has been alleged on Twitter that the Brazilian got through more than 12km of running against Norwich City on Friday, and then through a further 14.44km against Frank Lampard’s men.

At the very beginning of a season that work rate is always going to have its effects, and it seemed to be the case for the 25-year-old as he suffered cramp on the pitch in Turkey, needing to be helped by teammate Virgil van Dijk and then by a club physio before the shoot-out, all the while with a grimace on his face.

He may have been barely able to walk come the final whistle but he still managed to step up and put his penalty away when it came down to the crunch.

His situation previous to that is more than worrying however with just over 48 hours to go until Jurgen Klopp’s men face Southampton at St Mary’s.

Changes may be on the cards on the south coast.

Manchester United ready to hand Mason Greenwood a new contract after impressive displays

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to The Sun, Manchester United are ready to hand young starlet Mason Greenwood a new contract this summer after impressing on the club’s pre-season tour.

What’s the word?

The 17-year-old has been prolific in front of goal this summer, scoring in wins against Leeds and Inter. The forward only signed his first professional contract back in October 2018, but it now appears he could be set to pen a new and improved deal.

The report claims that Greenwood earns just £800-a-week at the moment but his rise to stardom under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will see him handed a fresh contract ahead of his 18th birthday this October.

Deserved reward

Despite being just 17, Greenwood has taken United by storm this summer and has earned rave reviews for his performances from teammates and manager alike.

Speaking after he scored in a 4-0 win over Leeds, Solskjaer remarked: “He’s got a chance to start that one (against Chelsea) definitely. He’s capable, more than capable. He’ll always be there in and around the box creating chances. I won’t say that that’s not a possibility. It’s a good possibility if he keeps going as he does. It’s difficult to keep players out if they keep playing well.

“You see a talented boy there and he’s got every opportunity to make it as a Man United player.”

As more and more Premier League sides look to give their talented young players more of a chance in the first-team, rewarding Greenwood for his stellar rise following his debut against PSG in the Champions League last season seems like a fitting reward.

It will now be up to Greenwood himself to continue to prove that he is worth every penny of his reported new contract.

Arsenal should name Hector Bellerin as their new captain

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Amid all the talk of incomings and outgoings this summer at Arsenal, one man who was seemingly certain to be there by the end of the transfer window was the club captain. Instead, Laurent Koscienly’s refusal to go on the pre-season tour of the USA came out of left-field and has left the north London side reeling by the impact of his actions.

Reports have since claimed that Unai Emery was furious with the Frenchman’s decision and the club are now understood to be taking disciplinary measures against their captain. However, that description of Koscielny as a ‘captain’ may be coming to an abrupt end, and it appears inevitable that the Gunners will strip the veteran of the armband given Emery’s feelings on the matter.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

But following the releases of both Aaron Ramsey and Petr Cech, the number of potential candidates for the job has already dwindled. Granit Xhaka and Sokratis have their plaudits, but one man who has been through thick and thin with the Gunners and could be a perfect fit is the side’s ‘Spanish-Cockney’ hybrid, Hector Bellerin.

A role model on and off the pitch

Gone are the days when the captain’s remit was getting in teammates’ faces, riling them up and giving them a kick up the backside when needed. The modern-day captain must lead by example both on and off the pitch and command respect through his actions, not his bawling.

Step forward, Bellerin. The Barcelona youth product joined Arsenal in the summer of 2011 and made his competitive debut for the club in September 2013. Since then, the right-back has gone through enough ups and downs to last most footballers’ lifetimes. A rapid rise, a period of stagnation, turned on by the club’s own fans, fighting back to his old form and then devastated by a long-term injury.

When he does play, he is one of the side’s greatest attacking outlets, racking up 24 assists for the Gunners so far.

It has been quite the rollercoaster journey for Bellerin at Arsenal, but one thing that has remained a constant is his incredible professionalism and humility. The 24-year-old is publicly outspoken in his calls for social and gender equality and has been a proponent of environmental rights too.

The Spain international is a class act and as he approaches almost a decade of service for the north Londoners, his contributions make him the outstanding candidate to be the next captain.

He encapsulates the very best of the modern Arsenal. Slick and attacking on the pitch, and respectful and generous off it. It’s hard to imagine someone other than Bellerin in the current squad who bleeds more red and white and who is more deserving of the armband.
