Asia Cup success proves Pakistan is safe – Ashraf

The successful organisation of the Asia Cup will boost Pakistan’s chances of hosting the ICC Champions Trophy in September this year, the board chairman Nasim Ashraf said.”All kinds of security arrangements will be made for the Champions Trophy,” Ashraf said after returning Thursday from the ICC’s executive board meeting in Dubai. Sri Lanka is the alternate host for the Champions Trophy in September if a final security report within 10 days of the Asia Cup finishing on July 6 demonstrates that Pakistan is unsafe.”It’s a standard process of the ICC to have a backup venue,” Ashraf said. “I was assured in the ICC’s meeting by all the members that they intend to participate in the Champions Trophy in Pakistan.”We are very proud the Asia Cup is organised in such a nice and peaceful manner,” Ashraf said. “It proves that Pakistan is a country where cricket can be played safely.”New Zealand are also set to tour Pakistan for a short three-match ODI series in August, further enhancing Pakistan’s chances. Ashraf met with Justin Vaughan, CEO New Zealand Cricket, in Dubai where the PCB chief was assured the tour would go ahead.”New Zealand will arrive on August 20 and the series begins from August 24,”Ashraf said. “Two matches will be played in Faisalabad and the third inMultan.Australia postponed a tour of Pakistan in March after several bomb attacksin the wake of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s assassination inDecember 2007, and several Australian and New Zealand players have alreadyindicated they may pull out of the tournament rather than play inPakistan.Ashraf also appreciated the ICC’s decision to change the 2006 Oval Testresult from a forfeit win for England to a draw. “The ICC and especiallythe ECB showed tremendous generosity in reversing a bad decision,” Ashrafsaid. “The decision shows that if humans can make mistakes it can becorrected by humans.”Darrell Hair, the umpire at the centre of the storm, was later banned fromthe ICC elite umpire’s panel and only returned after completing arehabilitation program last September, when he also dropped a claim ofracial discrimination against the ICC in the British High Court. Ashrafsaid that he was not sure whether Hair would officiate in the ChampionsTrophy. “I leave it to the wisdom of the ICC to do the right thing,” hesaid.

Sunderland handed McCann boost

Sunderland have been handed a key boost in their pursuit of Ali McCann…

What’s the talk?

According to Yorkshire Live, Hull have been hit with a transfer embargo and will not be able to exit it until they have repaid loans they received to combat the loss of revenue caused by the pandemic.

This could come as a key boost to Sunderland in their pursuit of St Johnstone midfielder Ali McCann. The Sun on Sunday (27.06.21, pg. 61) reported that Hull were interested in signing the Black Cats target but now Lee Johnson will have one less competitor for his signature.

Johnson needs him

Kristjaan Speakman must react to this news by moving swiftly ahead with a swoop for the Northern Ireland international in the coming days. The prospect of joining a Championship side could have been an attractive prospect for McCann, but now that Hull are seemingly unable to complete a deal for him due to their restrictions, that could open the door for Sunderland.

Speakman may now be able to convince him to make the switch to League One as Hull’s potential offer of second-tier football in England is unlikely to be on the table so this update could be a major boost to the club’s chances of being able to bring him to the Stadium of Light, which Lee Johnson will be delighted about as he needs a player of his quality in midfield.

Grant Leadbitter, Chris Maguire and Max Power are among those who have left the club in recent weeks, which has left a gap in Johnson’s midfield unit. McCann averaged a WhoScored rating of 6.81 in 31 starts for club and country as a central midfielder last term, which is a higher score than any Sunderland central midfielder managed in League One.

McCann’s St Johnstone teammate Jason Holt labelled him as “undroppable” last year and said that he has the potential to achieve great things in the game because of his talent and attitude.

He told The Herald, as transcribed by Glasgow Times:

“I’m a big fan of Ali McCann. I think he has done exceptionally well this season and I’ve been really impressed.

“Since I went in, he was definitely one of the players that I was really impressed with especially at such a young age.

“He got his place in the team at the start of the season, and to keep it, it is testament to himself and the performances he has been putting in. He has been undroppable.

“He’s definitely got the potential to go on to bigger things. He has a great head on his shoulders and he is very down to earth.”

This shows how highly the £1m-rated gem is thought of amongst his peers in Scotland and highlights why he could be a great signing for Sunderland.

If he is thriving and undroppable in the Scottish Premiership, the top division in Scotland, then he could be able to hit the ground running and make an impact by dropping down to the third division in England.

AND in other news, Speakman could strike gold for Sunderland with 20 y/o talent, fans will be buzzing…

West Ham: Fans react as Jayden Fevrier pens new deal

West Ham have recently announced that Jayden Fevrier has signed his first professional contract with the club.

The Hammers youngster has penned a one-year contract, with the option to extend this for an additional year if he can make a good impression in the upcoming 2021/22 campaign.

Speaking in an interview with West Ham TV, Fevrier expressed his delight at signing the new contract, and labelled it as a ‘big step’ in his career.

“I feel proud to have signed. Very proud. When I was young, this was all I wanted to do: work towards becoming a professional footballer. I feel like this is a big step in my career and I’m just happy that I’ve had this opportunity.”

Fevrier is yet to make a senior appearance for West Ham, but scored six goals and was on hand to provide four assists from his 21 appearances for the academy teams last term, which certainly makes for good reading for a full-back.

Plenty of West Ham supporters took to social media to react to the news of Fevrier’s new contract with the club.

Take a look at the best of the reaction from Twitter below, as supporters hailed the ‘good news’…

Everton board ignoring fan concern over Benitez

Everton’s hunt for a new manager has now been a month-long pursuit.

A host of managers have been in the frame according to odds shown at coral offers at the signup but only one target still seems to be standing.

What’s the word?

The Toffees have been linked with the likes of Nuno Santo and Christophe Galtier but the head coach that looks set to arrive is Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard has been in talks with Everton over the last couple of weeks, with negotiations reportedly starting to come to a close.

However, an article written by Paul Joyce in The Times shares a rather shocking revelation on the thought process of Alisher Usmanov, one of the club’s big sponsors, and Farhad Moshiri.

Joyce revealed the following: “The two billionaires are not oblivious to the fans’ reaction but have simply chosen to ignore the outpouring in the belief they are hiring a good coach, with a strong tactical understanding and someone who can improve players.

“They are tired of “losing”, according to sources, although the hire ’em, fire ’em policy and haphazard manner in which previous managerial appointments have been conducted means Everton have been their own worst enemy in terms of on-field progress since Moshiri came on board in February 2016.”

Supporters will be appalled

2021 appears to be a game of ‘which owners can upset their club’s supporters the most’.

Earlier this year, the Premier League’s big and now greedy six, attempted to break away from UEFA’s continental competitions – the Champions League and Europa League – to join a brand new European Super League.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

They were going to be joined by the continents biggest and best teams but that fell by the wayside after significant fan pressure.

Protests were held outside stadiums and social media campaigns were started that threw smoke in the faces of the likes of Daniel Levy at Tottenham, Stan Kroenke at Arsenal and The Glazers at Manchester United.

On this occasion, fan power won. It told the billionaires in charge of their respective clubs that supporters hold a great stronghold over what goes on behind the scenes.

Although their initial ploy to break away acted as a crime against football, the way they immediately pulled out spoke volumes.

Of course, the situation now unravelling at Everton is a very different set of events but Moshiri and co had an opportunity here to demonstrate that they do care about their own supporters by not hiring a manager with connections to their fierce rivals.

The Goodison Park faithful have protested against the idea of Benitez becoming their new manager due to his allegiances to Liverpool but the board don’t seem to care about that.

If the 61-year-old is successful on the blue side of Merseyside then surely all be forgiven. Unfortunately for Benitez, he might not be given the platform to achieve his goals by the crowd.

The fans should be appalled by what’s occurring.

Aston Villa must avoid selling Morgan Sanson

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith must avoid selling Morgan Sanson this summer as fresh transfer reports emerge over his potential exit.

What’s the story?

It’s been a rather frustrating first few months in English football for the January signing, making just nine appearances in the Premier League and that too only totalling 291 minutes worth of football.

Reports in recent days have suggested that Smith isn’t convinced by his midfield options, and that amid a potential move for Southampton and England star James Ward-Prowse, Villa are unimpressed by what Sanson has shown thus far.

And now, former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has said: “I don’t see why they wouldn’t sell him if he’s not producing. It’s only six months and sometimes you’ve got to give players a little bit more time. Not everyone settles well in this country.

“But if they are interested in a couple more midfielders then that could be a sign. There’s no shame in cutting your losses and moving on. People make mistakes. You’re never going to get every signing spot-on.”

Fans would be fuming

Speaking after his signing back in the January transfer window, Smith waxed lyrical about the kind of qualities the Frenchman could bring, saying: “He has got a big game mentality, he has played at the top of the French league for the last five years, played in the Champions League.

“He is a great technician and has great tactical awareness. He can play in a number of positions, can set up goals and can score goals. He has a bit of everything in his game so we’re really pleased with the acquisition.”Dubbed as a “warrior” by himself, the £17m-rated Sanson showed his qualities as a really effective box-to-box presence in his time at Marseille. Before his move to the Midlands, he averaged an impressive 1.8 tackles and 1.1 key passes per game in Ligue 1, both of which ranked him favourably compared to the rest of Villa’s squad. In fact, only two other players have averaged more tackles per match than him, while again, only three other have averaged more key passes too.Given that he only arrived in January, and had his fair share of injury issues too, there’s no questioning that Villa fans and Smith have yet to see the best of Sanson. It would be a ridiculous decision for the Midlands club to sell him so soon after his arrival, and without having first properly given him a chance to shine. It would be an admittance that they got it completely wrong in the transfer market back in January, and would be a very hasty mistake. Villa fans would surely be fuming at the club cashing in this summer without giving the player a real chance to prove himself.[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/aston-villa-dean-smith-transfer-window-premier-league-villa-park-emi-buendia-gregg-evans-gossip-rumours-update-news” title=”Read the latest Aston Villa transfer rumours and news!”]It would be an unforgivable disaster from the club to make such a decision so soon into Sanson’s Villa career.Meanwhile, David Ornstein has dropped an exciting Aston Villa transfer update…

Second One-Day in doubt too

This outfield cannot take anymore water

Haydn Gill26-May-2002This outfield cannot take anymore water. As Sabina Park curator Patrick Gordon spoke yesterday morning with the sunshine trying to break through and the wind blowing, there was a touch of optimism that something could be salvaged by having a match here today.By then, the first of the five Cable & Wireless One-Day Internationals had long been abandoned to the disgust of a few disappointed fans who felt the decision was too premature.A few hours after Gordon’s comment on the outfield, further rain between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. almost certainly put in doubt the second of the weekend’s back-to-back matches between West Indies and India. And the bleak forecast for last night and today was for thundershowers. We’re taking all precautions to prevent a further saturation, Gordon said.We don’t know what the weather is going to be like. Certainly, if it remains clear and we continue to get some sunlight and breeze, I can’t say that we are going to start at 9:30, but we should start pretty close to that.It was virtually an echo from what was heard on Friday evening after match officials had completed an inspection. We knew that once we got rain overnight we would have been in trouble, Gordon said.Trouble started at about 11:30 p.m. Friday with sharp shower and it continued with persistent rain between 1:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. yesterday.Head groundsman Charlie Joseph had lost all hope after working the preceding two nights without any sleep. When Jamaica Cricket Association chief executive officer Brian Breese came to Sabina at 6 a.m., he found Joseph sleeping on the roller and didn’t even bother to wake him.At about 8:20 a.m., Breese made the inevitable announcement that the match would be abandoned and patrons would be given a complete refund. As patrons started to make their way home, the sound system from the Kingston Cricket Club started to play old-goldies that continued well into the evening when it was still very overcast.`Conditions were bad’The four umpires and match referee were of the firm opinion that play should be called off. We didn’t have a problem with that. We realised that conditions were bad, Breese said. The main source of concern was the area just to the west of the square and a section in the north-eastern corner of the ground which had been drenched with several inches of rain following the conclusion of the Test match on Wednesday. As Breese made the announcement on the public address system, it was met with shouts of disapproval from some spectators in the Kingston Cricket Club, who gave the impression that they believed the match should not have been abandoned so early. At the same time, hundreds queuing up to get into the popular Mound Stand also showed their dissatisfaction, but both Breese and Gordon defended the early cancellation. To have tried to play a match today [yesterday], we may have made such a mess out there that there would be no way we could get play tomorrow [today], Breese said. All five of the officials were adamant that play should be called off. Looking at it and realising what it was like yesterday [Friday] and realising the amount of deterioration that had gone on, I thought the right decision was been made.Gordon spoke about the potential dangers of playing in soggy conditions that could risk injury.Everybody wants to see cricket, but we must protect the players. That must be paramount and I think it was uppermost in the minds of the umpires, he said.Gordon also defended suggestions that the groundstaff was too tardy in placing covers on the ground after the completion of the Test match on Wednesday. We could have covered the entire ground, that’s hindsight. We don’t have the covers to cover the entire ground, he said.We could have pitched a tent. There are all kinds of things we could have done, but I still don’t know if we would have been able to play this [yesterday] morning.
