Spurs: Rose can ‘still move’ but second tier unlikely %%page%% %%sep%% %%sitename%%

Speaking to Football Insider, former Tottenham midfielder Michael Brown has dropped a transfer claim surrounding Spurs defender Danny Rose, hinting that he ‘could still move’ but a switch to the Championship is unlikely.

Rose, who has been omitted from Tottenham’s Europa League and Premier League squads for this season, faces life on the sidelines for the foreseeable future unless he mutually agrees to terminate his contract or drops down a division.

The EFL bonus window is open until Friday, with deadline day now looming, and the England international faces a decision regarding his future.

Time running out for Rose

Rose was a favourite and mainstay under ex-Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino, with the Argentine describing him as ‘quality’, but Jose Mourinho has found no place for him in the squad.

As a result, the 30-year-old has been pushing for an exit in order to battle his way back into Gareth Southgate’s England plans, missing last Monday’s international transfer deadline.

Due to his failure to earn a move away over the summer, Rose faces a spell in purgatory with no game-time until the transfer market opens again in January, but the bonus window presents a chance for him to leave now in a potential Championship switch.

Valued at £14.4m by Transfermarkt, it’s unclear whether any Championship  side would pay in and around this fee, but a loan spell could also be considered.

Brown believes Rose will snub Championship move

Brown issued his transfer verdict to Football Insider, doubting that Rose would take such a plunge.

“When it doesn’t happen, when you know you’re not going to be part of the plans, it’s just going to have to be a bit of a wait. That’s what happens,” the ex-Tottenham midfielder explained.

“He can still move to the Championship, but that would be some change for him if that were the case.”

Transfer Tavern take

It remains to be seen whether the left-back opts for a move away before next Friday, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy could kill two birds with one stone by considering a half-season loan deal.

A temporary switch to the second tier could maintain the 30-year-old’s fitness levels, and with Rose’s contract expiring at the end of this season, the loan could also increase his market value in time to offload permanently in the summer of 2021.

However, it all depends on his performances, with the 29-cap England international now facing a tough choice before the end of the week.

Predicted Rangers lineup vs Lincoln Red Imps for Europa League clash

Rangers head to Gibraltar to face Lincoln Red Imps in their quest to advance past the Europa League qualifying stages.

They’re a team that are famed for knocking out arch-rivals Celtic in Brendan Rodgers’ first-ever game in charge all those years ago and Steven Gerrard will want to ensure that he’s not on the end of the embarrassment this time around.

The Ibrox outfit romped to a 4-0 victory at the weekend but it came at the expense of a few injuries, so what sort of side will the Gers boss select here tonight?

Here’s what we are predicting…

Gerrard could make as many as four changes across the pitch as some fringe players are surely in line to garner some much-needed match action.

Between the sticks should be first-choice Jon McLaughlin whilst the back four in front of him only has one difference from Saturday’s win and clean sheet.

In comes 23-year-0ld centre-back George Edmondson for Filip Helander. He’ll partner Conor Goldson with James Tavernier and Borna Barisic likely to remain on either flank.

Both central midfielders are switched around, meaning there’s no place for the injured Ryan Jack or veteran Steven Davis. Instead, Gerrard could call upon Scott Arfield and £10m man Glen Kamara, who has been linked with an exit this summer.

Joe Aribo and Brandon Barker are also on the treatment table meaning 30-year-old forward Greg Stewart could be forced to play out with Ryan Kent occupying the other side.

Through the middle, Ianis Hagi keeps his place in the number ten role with Kemar Roofe getting the nod once again over Alfredo Morelos and Cedric Itten.

The Scottish giants will face Willem II in the third round if they manage to pick up the victory tonight.

Leicester news: Foxes to chase Jonathan Tah if move for Wesley Fofana fails

Leicester City’s 2019/20 was great and under the leadership of Brendan Rodgers, the Foxes managed to clinch the fifth spot in the 2019/20 Premier League table. Of course, they did experience a slight decline towards the end of the season and that resulted in them narrowly missing out on the Champions League positions.

But that still doesn’t take anything away from the fact that they were excellent for the majority of their campaign. However, if there is one spot that might need a bit of tweaking in the squad then it’s the centre-back position.

We already know that Leicester are chasing St Etienne’s gem, Wesley Fofana, but the ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano says that another name is one the table in case their bids are turned down by the selling club.

The journalist suggested that Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah might be an alternative Rodgers is keen on and the Foxes could go into that direction if they fail to acquire their primary target.

We still don’t know how expensive that operation might be nor how serious they are in their intentions but the source is, of course, quite reliable.

Fofana is also being chased by some other Premier League clubs and with hefty competition on their tail and St Etienne not exactly being keen on selling, getting this deal over the line could indeed be easier said than done.

Verdict

Of course, if they can snatch Fofana up ahead of their rivals, then that would be the ideal scenario for the Foxes. However, it seems that is far from a straightforward deal and having a worthy alternative is always good.

Tah is only 24 years of age and has the potential to turn into a great centre-back in the immediate future. And needless to say, that is exactly what Rodgers wants.

Let’s wait and see what the future holds for Leicester in the market.

Tottenham Hotspur: Noel Whelan says Spurs ‘compete’ for transfer targets Joe Gelhardt and Jensen Weir

Tottenham are keen to take advantage of Wigan Athletic’s administration by planning a double swoop for Joe Gelhardt and Jensen Weir, according to recent reports.

The Sun claimed that Spurs are seeking to exploit the situation by making moves for the 18-year-old duo, and Noel Whelan believes that the Londonders will have to ‘compete’ with Celtic if they want to sign the teenagers in the summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker has backed the duo to leave the Latics. After being asked if the teenager will leave in the summer, Whelan said: “Gelhardt and Weir, because of the administration, are in a very good position to get a move away from Wigan at the end of the season.

“They are going to have to compete with Tottenham and some other clubs as well. These two young players are wanted by some of the top clubs in Britain.”

“The club need to take the shackles off and allow these two young players to go. They will get some money back which is needed to help that club survive.”

It is difficult to disagree with Whelan here, as Wigan’s financial woes have put them in a precarious position. The Latics confirmed last week that the club are in dire straits following administration, meaning that it will be hard for them to keep hold of some of their talent.

According to Football Insider, Celtic are also closely monitoring Gelhardt as his valuation is expected to plummet in the wake of the news about the Championship club. The striker has enjoyed a breakthrough season at the DW Stadium, scoring once in 18 games, which has put him on Tottenham’s radar.

Weir, who is the son of Everton legend David, is also wanted by Spurs, and Wigan administrators have confirmed they have received an official approach for the pair.

Mourinho is well aware that his budget has been limited in light of recent events and he will have to resort to sorting out swap deals, signing free agents and pursuing cheaper options this summer. Spurs will likely be eager to wrap up a deal as quickly as possible, amid interest from Celtic, Everton and Leicester.

Scouts are confident that Gelhardt can be groomed into a similar style to Harry Kane who is the club’s top scorer this season. However, the Lilywhites will have some convincing to do, as Troy Parrott has been marginalised for the majority of the campaign.

Whether or not they will be able to offer Gelhardt the game-time that he would like remains to be seen.

Tottenham Hotspur: Ryan Sessegnon could be loaned out by Spurs

Ryan Sessegnon could be leaving Tottenham Hotspur sooner than expected.

It has been a challenging first season for Sessegnon as his progress has been hampered right from the start. He was an unused substitute against Manchester United and West Ham, before being dropped from the squad altogether for the defeat at Sheffield United (as per Transfermarkt). Sessegnon suffered the same fate last night as Jose Mourinho left him out in favour of Spurs prospect Dennis Cirkin.

According to The Telegraph, as per @TranSPURS, Spurs may be forced to send him out on loan in the summer transfer window. The club are concerned that his development is stalling under Mourinho, as he has struggled for game-time so far, starting only four matches in the Premier League.

In fairness to Mourinho, he already has his work cut out trying to solve Tottenham’s defensive issues. The Lilywhites have leaked goals for fun all season, conceding more than Arsenal, Manchester United and Premier League champions Liverpool this season.

The manager cannot and should not be expected to focus all of his attention on helping the 20-year-old improve. Removing Sessegnon from the equation for the time being would at least ease some of the pressure on the Portuguese.

The England under-21 international still has a lot of work to do if he wants to play for Spurs on a regular basis but he needs to be guaranteed minutes if he is to continue to develop as a player. As Alasdair Gold writes, his versatility is his biggest problem, as Mourinho doesn’t quite seem to know where he fits in.

A loan move would present him with the perfect opportunity to find his best position, while it should also benefit Mourinho in the long run as Sessegnon could pick up valuable experience and return to Tottenham ready to challenge for a place in the first team.

Keith Downie makes claim on Newcastle takeover

Newcastle United’s takeover announcement could quite literally come out of the blue, according to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie.Earlier in the week, the Magpies faithful were greeted with the frustrating news that there were further delays after new evidence was submitted to the Premier League that raises question marks over the deal. Those at St James’ Park have been waiting for over five weeks now yet the northeast outfit is still owned by Mike Ashley. However, Downie claims that it’s normal for these types of takeovers to go quiet and then for it to all come through from nowhere, he tweeted:

The consortium trying to purchase the club has influence from the Saudi Arabian government whilst PCP’s Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers are also involved in some capacity.

It’s believed that the deal is worth approximately £300m and all that’s remaining is Premier League approval and the transfer of funds.

Spurs poised to make £50m Memphis Depay bid

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham Hotspur are poised to bid £50m for Lyon attacker Memphis Depay, per The Daily Mirror.

What’s the word?

Depay has been in fine form for the French club since his arrival from Manchester United in 2017.

He has scored 41 goals and provided 32 assists in 99 Ligue 1 games since his move and has been scouted on two separate occasions by the north London club, per the report.

Spurs are said to be keen to bring in another forward and are preparing a big bid for the Netherlands international.

Exactly what Spurs need

Forget the Depay that played for United, this is a different player.

He has been a revelation in France, scoring goals at will and is also a creative force who can play both up front and on the left wing.

Per WhoScored, in the league, Depay averages 3.9 shots per game, 1.9 key passes and 2.3 dribbles. He has also already hit seven goals in just nine starts.

As it is, Spurs have just Harry Kane as their senior striking option and bringing him in some support, in the form of a player who has a point to prove in the Premier League, should be top of the club’s priority list – especially if they want to make the top four.

Indeed, Depay scored just seven times for United in 53 outings but one has to believe that he would have the bit between his teeth to prove he is made of sterner stuff were he to move to north London.

It could be an excellent move and, while £50m is expensive, Spurs spent more than that on Tanguy Ndombele just last summer. The money is there; spending it on Depay would be a smart move.

Andy Carroll reveals his hopes now that he is back at Newcastle

Andy Carroll has spoken of his delight at being back in the north-east and hopes to make his latest stint another successful one.

What did he say?

Whilst he hasn’t yet started a league game, the striker is in high spirits and in the main he has started to put his injury issues behind him.

After eight years away from the club in a period which saw him score only 45 goals, he is relieved to be settled down once again in familiar settings, and it seems that anything positive that happens on the pitch is just a bonus.

Speaking at the NewcastleFoundation Dinner, as reported by ChronicleLive, Carroll said:

“It’s been hard. I’ve had my ups and downs with injuries, but hopefully I’m past them all now.

“It’s been good, and I’m back in the squad.

“I’ve missed being home, missed being with my family and friends, just driving around, memories. It’s great to be back at the club.”

Carroll has only achieved one shot on target so far but is remaining optimistic, perhaps because he believes he will begin to deliver once he finally works his way back up to full fitness and puts his injury woes in the past.

Worth the gamble?

When Carroll was brought back to the club it may have pleased the fans, but onlookers may have felt the club was acting on sentiment rather than rationale.

After all, he made just 28 league starts over the last two years, contributing only three goals in that time and appearing to lose his effectiveness with each passing injury.

Now, it seems that Steve Bruce has granted him the role of being an impact sub, but with Newcastle a defensive outfit this year and players such as Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin not suited to crossing, his success is likely to be limited.

The pair have averaged zero and 0.4 successful crosses per game respectively this season, and since he has only made five appearances so far, Carroll will have to contribute a lot more to repay his weekly wage, which could be as high as £70,000 a week when he starts a match.

Given his injury history, it was a big risk to bring him in. Some have questioned whether it was at best a PR stunt by Mike Ashley to win over fans disappointed with Bruce’s appointment, and until he delivers on the pitch those doubts will remain.
