Leeds United handed quadruple injury boost

Leeds United have been handed a quadruple injury boost ahead of their upcoming Premier League fixture.

What’s the latest?

In a recent article for Leeds Live, Beren Cross revealed that there could be light at the end of the tunnel regarding both Patrick Bamford and Luke Ayling’s respective recoveries from injury, with the centre-forward having been sidelined since September with an ankle injury, while the right-back has missed the Whites’ last nine fixtures due to a knee injury.

The journalist then went on to state that the knocks of Raphinha and Rodrigo – who both missed the Leeds’ 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday – are only believed to be minor, suggesting that the duo will be back for the trip to Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

In his article, Cross wrote: “There is hopefully light at the end of the tunnel for United. Ayling and Bamford are thought to be making good progress and not far away, while Raphinha and Rodrigo’s issues are thought to be minor.”

Fans will be buzzing

While Leeds have not enjoyed the best of seasons so far this term, with Marcelo Bielsa’s side having picked up just 11 points from their opening 12 fixtures of the campaign, considering just how important the quartet of Bamford, Ayling, Raphinha and Rodrigo are to the Whites, when these four all make a return to first-team football, it would not be surprising to see Leeds shoot up the league standings.

Indeed, last season, Raphinha ranked as the club’s third-best performer in the league according to SofaScore, while Ayling, Bamford and Rodrigo came in as the Whites’ sixth, seventh and tenth-best players in the top flight respectively.

As such, despite the fact that Leeds currently sit in 17th place in the Premier League standings, a mere two points above Burnley in the relegation zone, following Cross’ latest injury update, the Elland Road faithful shouldn’t have too much to worry regarding relegation just yet as they gear up for the exiting return of their star men.

Newcastle: Chris Waugh reveals Howe wishes

Eddie Howe has requested that a centre-back and full-back be signed in January amid Newcastle United’s defensive struggles.

That’s according to Chris Waugh, the club’s correspondent for The Athletic.

The lowdown

Newcastle find themselves rock bottom of the Premier League after suffering a seventh defeat in 13 matches on Saturday.

Their tally of 15 goals scored is actually better than seven teams, including Wolves and Tottenham in sixth and seventh positions respectively. However, it’s their league-worst defensive record which is costing them – they’ve shipped 29 goals so far, an average of more than 2.2 per game.

Continue at the current rate, and they could concede 85 before the end of the season. For context, Derby County’s 11-point side in 2007/08, statistically the worst in Premier League history, shipped 89.

The latest

In tweeting a link to his article for The Athletic outlining the Newcastle manager’s transfer wishes, Waugh said that “Howe wants defenders in January” but fears that it “could be too late by then” to fix a “porous, ageing & error prone defence”.

A further tweet from the journalist claimed that centre-backs and full-backs are ‘being scouted’ heavily by the club’s recruitment staff, with Howe regarding these reinforcements as crucial.

Waugh added that scouts have been scanning Europe for players entering the last six, or last 18, months of their contracts, while the manager also has some British-based targets in mind.

The verdict

It’s hard to argue with Howe’s assessment, but who could Newcastle actually end up signing?

The club are said to be ‘reasonably confident’ of striking a deal for Burnley’s James Tarkowski, who has failed to agree a new deal at Turf Moor. The Clarets defender is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, while one potential full-back target in Kieran Trippier is rated at £18m.

Tarkowski featured in the WhoScored Premier League team of the season for 2020/21, while the Atletico Madrid right-back has been capped 35 times by England.

The duo also boast plenty of English top-flight experience, with 171 and 107 appearances respectively in the division, so both could be ideal recruits for January if Newcastle can persuade them to join the Howe revolution.

Prior promises England fight

Headingley and the Ashes will forever be synonymous with remarkable turnarounds, but England will require a comeback to rival that of Ian Botham and pals in 1981 if they are to recover from a devastating first day of the fourth Test. But at least their wicketkeeper, Matt Prior, has shown the way to a revival – he bounced back from a pre-toss back spasm that put his participation in severe doubt to top-score for England with a spirited 37 not out from 43 balls, and in his estimation, this match is far from over.”We can get out of this,” said Prior, after England had been rolled over for 102 in their first innings, the sixth lowest total in Headingley’s 69-Test history. “It’s not been a good day, and we’re behind the eight-ball, but this game turns around so quickly and there’s still enough in this wicket. It’s still moving around, still swinging, and we’ve got four days to come back which is good for us. We’re annoyed with today, but we’re raring to go for tomorrow to put things right.”All the while that Ricky Ponting and Shane Watson were compiling a second-wicket stand of 119, England’s hopes of fighting back looked as derelict as the spanking new pavilion that Yorkshire had hoped to be able to unveil for this contest. But by claiming three wickets in three overs in the final session, England reminded themselves that they have the ability to rattle Australia’s batting line-up.When Steve Harmison tore into Michael Clarke in a thrilling final spell, cracking him on the helmet and glove from consecutive deliveries, England believed they had a sniff of an opening. “The way Steve has come in has been brilliant,” said Prior. “He’s been fired up and he wants to stamp his mark on this game, and the way he charged in at the end there is always very exciting when you’re on his team. We were a bit gutted not to get a couple more [wickets], but that’s for tomorrow. We’ll come back hard tomorrow.”For all the fire that they showed in that final session, England already trail by 94 runs with six Australian wickets standing, and Prior admitted that James Anderson may have tweaked his hamstring while stretching for the quick single that extended his run of 53 innings without a duck. But nevertheless, he remained confident in the abilities of England’s five-man bowling attack.”Early wickets tomorrow morning will be important, but we believe we’ve got the bowlers in the dressing room that can turn this game around,” he said. “And when we get our chance to bat again, there are going to be some very, very determined batsmen. If we can get a couple of early wickets, bowl them out cheaply tomorrow morning, have a solid start with the bat and claw away at their lead, the game can turn around very quickly.”Prior was at a bit of a loss to explain England’s flaccid start to the day, although he insisted that he had nothing to do with either the 5am fire alarm at the team hotel, or the absence of the talismanic Andrew Flintoff. “We’re a very very tight unit, very tight in the changing room, and we know that every single player in that squad is as important as any other,” he said. “Whoever is spoken about most is irrelevant to what goes on in the changing room. Each member of the squad is a matchwinner in our eyes.”Right now, however, the matchwinners look to be all Australian, not least Stuart Clark, whose return to the starting XI galvanised their bowling attack. “First and foremost the Aussies bowled well,” said Prior. “They put the ball in the right areas enough times, and you know as a player if the opposition are doing that, it’s always going to be tricky. The guys will hold their hands up and admit there were some dismissals that they could have not had, but that’s cricket.”Clark, for his part, took his England record to a remarkable 29 wickets at 15 in less than six full Tests, but admitted his surprise that his three-wicket haul today had been so easy to come by. “Whenever a side gets bowled out for 100 you’re a little bit surprised. That doesn’t happen a helluva lot,” he said. “I just wasn’t quite sure what was going on. Maybe we bowled pretty well, maybe they had one of those days where they nicked them and we missed them.”The match situation has left the destination of the Ashes on a knife-edge. Australia trail 1-0, but with this match tilted so far in their favour, they seem sure to head to The Oval at the end of the month needing a draw to retain the urn. Clark, however, was adamant that no such thoughts would dare to creep into the Australian dressing-room.”I don’t think we’ve even talked about retaining the Ashes at this point,” he said. “We’ve talked about getting well in front in this game, because we’re in a good position, given that we bat well tomorrow. So that’s probably the furthest thing from our mind. It’s more if we have a good day tomorrow, it’s another step on the way to the end prize.”

Manjunath, Naidu shine for Bangalore Provident

A round-up of the first day of the Karnataka Premier League

Cricinfo staff09-Sep-2009Bangalore Provident (Rural) eased to a 36-run win over Mangalore United in the opening game of the inaugural Karnataka Premier League at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. Bangalore Provident opted to bat and made the most of the opportunity, building a substantial score of 192 which proved more than adequate in the end. The innings was set up by a blistering opening stand of 168 between Maniunath Manjunath (92) and Thilak Naidu (74). Left-arm seamer Sreenath Aravind dismissed both batsmen but conceded 43 in his four overs. In response, Mangalore faltered from the outset, losing their first three wickets for 16. Medium-pacer Neravanda Aiyappa (3 for 20) accounted for two of those wickets. Rongsen Jonathan (63) and SN Amit (33) then put together a stand of 82 but Mangalore had been virtually shut out by the time their effort was complete. Both fell within a space of 12 runs and their team batted out the remaining overs to finish with 156.Bangalore Brigadiers (Urban) had to do little to get past Belagavi Panthers in their opening game of the KPL. M Vinod starred in an all-round effort, taking four wickets and making an unbeaten 36 to see his team home by seven wickets.Bangalore Brigadiers justified their decision to field by bowling out Belagavi Panthers for a paltry 92. The start for the Panthers was encouraging as the openers added a run-a-ball 15 but once they fell, a collapse ensued. Only four batsmen reached double-figures, as the Brigadiers kept taking wickets on a frequent basis. Vinod (4-16) was supported by left-arm spinner Narayanan Vinu Prasad (2-11) and the other bowlers chipped in to take the last eight wickets for 47.In their reply, the Brigadiers suffered an early setback, losing Robin Uthappa, fresh from a century in the BCCI Corporate Trophy final, for a duck. But the Panthers had too few runs on the board, and Vinod, along with wicketkeeper Lokesh Rahul (29) saw to it that victory was achieved without too many hiccups. The tournament runs for two weeks, culminating with the final on September 23.

Tom Barclay makes big Marc Guehi claim

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi could take his game to the next level after receiving guidance from Sol Campbell in recent weeks, according to journalist Tom Barclay.

What’s the story?

The 47-year-old former England international has been out of work since leaving Southend United in June 2020 but is keen to continue learning and remain in the game until another chance comes along.

Campbell left his managerial position on the south coast by ‘mutual consent’ following the club’s relegation to League Two after the 2019/20 League One season was cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

And now he’s been invited to take part in some Palace training sessions by former Arsenal teammate Patrick Vieira, something Barclay believes will be extremely beneficial to 21-year-old Guehi.

He told GIVEMESPORT: He seems to really be one of those characters who is like a sponge. I know it’s a cliché but he’s particularly one of those players who listens to everything, really tries to pick up tips, and you start noticing it in his game.

“The more he’s played, the more he’s adding things to his game, and I think Campbell’s vast experience of playing right at the top could only enhance that.”

Crystal Palace fans will be excited

Guehi only arrived at Selhurst Park over the summer via an £18m move from boyhood club Chelsea, but he’s already made a big impression under Vieira’s tutelage.

The centre-back has played every minute of Palace’s Premier League campaign to date, averaging 1.2 tackles per game, 0.7 interceptions and a whopping 3.4 clearances, as per WhoScored.

But Campbell’s presence on the training ground could help the England U21 international elevate his game to new heights in the months ahead.

In a career spanning 20 years, Campbell made over 500 appearances for the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Portsmouth, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and one League Cup throughout his playing days.

Therefore, he could be the ideal tutor for Guehi at this early stage of his career, and Palace fans will surely be excited to see the progress that he makes during his time in south London.

Wolves played a blinder with Dendoncker move

The philosophy since Fosun took on the ownership of Wolverhampton Wanderers has been to buy young players with sell on value.

If you excuse the likes of Raul Jimenez and Joao Moutinho then Wolves have quite evidently achieved that.

In signing vibrant young footballers like Adama Traore, Ruben Neves and Pedro Neto, the Midlands outfit could rake in a bucket load of cash over the next few years.

Traore was signed for £18m but Bruno Lage rejected an offer in the region of £30m from Tottenham over the summer.

Neves, meanwhile, has been touted at £40m and Pedro Neto has been talked about as a £50m player in some circles.

However, one player who goes under the radar at Wolves has also seen his value rise quite significantly since arriving in English football.

That happens to be Belgium international Leander Dendoncker.

The midfield brute signed for just £12.4m in 2018 and in the last three years his value, per Transfermarkt, has soared to the £27m mark.

That’s quite the rise for a player who is a regular among a Belgian squad thought to contain their golden generation.

Dendoncker is yet to start a match in the Premier League under new manager Bruno Lage but he played a key part under Nuno Santo after they were promoted from the Championship.

The 24-year-old didn’t miss a single league outing during the 2019/20 campaign and featured on 33 occasions last term, only sitting on the sidelines for five matches.

Rarely injured and versatile in terms of his positions, he has become a vital cog in the wheel at Molineux.

Initially a central midfielder, Nuno began playing Dendoncker as a centre-back last term and hailed him as “fantastic” in the process.

He did struggle in a clash with Manchester City but that wasn’t a fair litmus for a player starting in an unnatural position.

Wolves’ tough-tackling Belgian has improved since that clash and ended last term with 2.6 aerial duels per game – the third highest in the squad – and as their central defender with the most tackles per appearance at 1.6.

He is yet to show his true colours under Lage but his market value rise dictates that they have a player with enormous potential on their hands.

Fosun clearly played a blinder with this move three years ago.

Expert slams Leeds over Llorente injury

An injury prevention expert has slammed Leeds United’s professionalism after Diego Llorente picked up a fitness issue in the defeat to Liverpool over the weekend.

The Lowdown: Llorente out injured again

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were beaten 3-0 by the Reds on Sunday afternoon as their disappointing start to the Premier League season continues.

To compound the result, Llorente hobbled off with a hamstring problem in the first half after being unable to continue, in what is the latest injury setback for the Spanish defender, who has now gone off injured three times in his last 17 Premier League appearances.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Expert slams Whites

Speaking to Football Insider, an unnamed source who has worked with Premier League clubs in the past lambasted Leeds, claiming there are issues with the club’s conditioning of players. They said:

“That does not reflect well on Leeds or their staff. The job of the staff – the fitness, conditioning, sports science guys – is to get the players fit to play and keep them out there.

“There are some injuries you can’t legislate for, like the Harvey Elliott one today, but top athletes should not be breaking down with muscle injuries in the first half of matches.

“It means they are being overloaded in training, over-worked or not warming up and preparing properly. Something has gone wrong somewhere and Leeds will be embarrassed it has happened again to Llorente.

“Everyone will look from the outside and think he is ‘injury prone’ but it is more complex than that.

“Ultimately it is the manager’s decision on whether he thinks players are fit to play, and once they’re selected they should not be pulling hamstrings in the first half.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-15/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Slightly harsh?

It is hard to be critical of Leeds’ professionalism when you look at the incredible fitness levels Bielsa has his players reaching.

Granted, it is a high level of intensity which could potentially increase the risk of injury, but it may simply be the case that Llorente is an injury-prone player. After all, he endured multiple absences during his time in La Liga as well.

The hope is that 28-year-old makes a speedy recovery given his importance to the team, but these injury problems are starting to become a worry and Bielsa may have doubts about the defender’s long-term worth if such fitness woes persist.

In other news, a journalist has named three Leeds players who could move on in January. Read more here.
