Contracts expansion has boosted Sri Lanka – Board

Sri Lanka Cricket has attributed the success of suitable replacements to the present national team to its far-sighted policy in expanding its list of contracted players from 32 to 76 since May last year

Sri Lanka Cricket has attributed the success of suitable replacements in the present national team to its far-sighted policy in expanding its list of contracted players from 32 to 76 since May last year.Players like offspinner Suraj Randiv, allrounders Thissara Perera and Muthumudalige Pushpakumara, fast bowler Suranga Lakmal and batsman Lahiru Thirimanne have lived up to expectations after filling in as replacements in the injury-stricken Sri Lankan team on their tours to India and Bangladesh. With the number of injuries mounting, batsmen Dinesh Chandimal and Mahela Udawatte have joined the national team in Bangladesh as reinforcements for the remainder of the tri-nation series.SLC’s head coach Jerome Jayaratne said the injuries helped open a window for young players to display their skills at international level. “These injuries, although it is not the right thing to say, helped us to expose these young players because they hardly get an opportunity when the established players are fit,” Jayaratne said.SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga said when the present set of administrators took office in April, only the Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka A team players were on contract with the board. “We thought if we are to bridge the gap between the national cricketers and the potential national cricketers we needed to create an environment where they can compete with full-time professional cricketers and, at the same time, have a smooth transition,” Ranatunga said. “What we decided was to expand the number of contracted players with SLC and provide them with suitable remuneration and, at the same time, coaching and practice facilities as the national cricketers so that, when the call-up came, they would be ready at any given time to replace anyone from the senior squad.”Today this concept has borne fruit to the extent that the performances of these younger players is putting pressure on the seniors for places in the national team, and some of the seniors don’t even want to take a rest between matches.”Ranatunga added the number of contracted players was expanded and classified into five categories – Sri Lanka (20 players), Sri Lanka A (15), Development (17), Academy (15) and Twenty20 (9). This included 15 potential cricketers earning contracts immediately after their school careers. The top national cricketers earn as much as around US$110,000 annually, and the lowest return for an A squad player is an estimated US$10,500. The Development squad player earns a monthly wage of Rs.60,000 (approx. US$530) and a Twenty20 squad player Rs.100,000 (approx. US$ 875). Overall, SLC spends in the region of US$ 2.3 million annually on contracts alone, according to sources. In addition, the contracted players in the Development and Academy squads receive cricket equipment worth Rs.80,000 (approx. US$700) each.Randiv and Udawatte are categorized as Sri Lanka A players; Lakmal, Pushpakumara and Thirimanne are part of the Development category and Perera and Chandimal have been classified as Academy players.”What we realized is we lose several potential cricketers when they find employment elsewhere and, as a result, don’t find the time to commit themselves to playing cricket,” Ranatunga said. “To address this trend we decided to contract the potential players into the Academy and provide them with a monthly allowance of about Rs. 40,000 (approx.US$350), making them full-time professional cricketers. The game is no longer confined to the high-profile groups but has extended to middle and lower income groups.”These different squads are provided with a similar coaching staff and facilities as the senior squad and given enough exposure by way of tours. In addition they also receive training in IT (computer) and English, public speaking, etiquette, financial management, motivation etc so that they develop other skills also and gain employment in different fields after their playing career.”Ranatunga praised the role played by the junior selection committee headed by Sunil Wikramanayake in identifying the future talented cricketers.”We want to expand this concept to the provinces and have at least 100 contracted players so that the player remains in his province and develops his skills as a cricketer instead of coming to Colombo. If you take the national teams, 90% of the cricketers are from the outstation. It is a costly exercise but it is the right way forward.”

Liverpool fans flock to Jones injury update

Flocking to Twitter, many Liverpool fans have erupted over news on midfielder Curtis Jones and his eye injury sustained prior to the international break.

The 20-year-old has been out of action since picking up the issue in training before Liverpool’s encounters with Atletico Madrid and West Ham United (liverpoolfc.com).

Described as a ‘freak injury’ by Doctor Jim Moxon, little is known on the specific timescale in which Jones will recover from his eye problem and return to the fold under manager Jurgen Klopp.

The club, however, have now confirmed in a statement that the Englishman ‘will remain out of action’ for ‘at least a few weeks’ as he continues his recovery.

Jones had been making sporadic cameos for the Reds in midfield this season, averaging an incredible 94.1% pass accuracy over his three Premier League starts (WhoScored).

That’s a higher number than any Liverpool player with more than two top flight starts (WhoScored), potentially highlighting his notable composure and poise when called upon.

Liverpool fans baffled…

As such, whilst taking into account the plethora of other injury issues sustained throughout the squad in recent weeks, it’s little wonder supporters have erupted over this update.

One fan even called it ‘really worrying’ as they question Liverpool’s fitness problems so far over 2021/2022.

Pakistan plan New Zealand series in UAE

Pakistan have planned four ODIs and two Twenty20s against New Zealand in UAE next month after Ijaz Butt, the Pakistan board chairman, finalised on a neutral venue option for the limited-overs leg of the series which will be followed by Tests in New Zealand in November. The schedule will be confirmed once New Zealand Cricket approve the plans.Butt visited UAE earlier this month to discuss hosting fees for the matches. “We have held successful discussions with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) officials and have planned four one-day matches in Abu Dhabi and two Twenty20 matches in Dubai,” Butt said. Abu Dhabi will host the one-dayers and Dubai will host the Twenty20s.All tours to Pakistan were put on hold following security concerns in the country. New Zealand agreed to allow Pakistan to be the ‘home’ team for the three-Test series starting November 24 in Dunedin.Pakistan also hosted Australia for five ODIs and Twenty20 in UAE in May this year.

Vettori thrilled with turnaround

Jesse Ryder’s contributions, after being a phantom through the two Tests, had played a big part in putting the smiles back on New Zealand’s faces

Jamie Alter in Colombo04-Sep-2009″The party’s on Jesse Ryder tonight, that’s for sure!” bellowed Tony Greig into the Colombo night as an expressionless Ryder left the dais with the Man-of-the-Match and Man-of-the-Series awards. It was a significant moment: Ryder walking back towards his cheering and clapping New Zealand team-mates, shoulders drooped, unfazed by defeat or victory. His contributions, after being a phantom through the two Tests, had played a big part in putting the smiles back on New Zealand faces. He backed up a decent score and two sensational pieces of fielding on Wednesday, with a brutal 52 and another catch tonight. Such moments and contributions were what it took, along with a few personnel and wardrobe changes, to inject life into what had been, until two evenings ago, a lacklustre time in Sri Lanka for the visitors. “Yeah, it was good to hit a few off the middle,” Ryder said after the match. “I’ve struggled a bit since I got here, so it was good. Baz [Brendon McCullum] got the team off to a good start, and our bowlers backed it up after that.”New Zealand were in control from the outset, with Ryder and Brendon McCullum launching a high-spirited and overdue partnership at the top of the order – New Zealand’s second-highest in Twenty20s. Impressively, their new-ball pair also played their part, and Nathan McCullum’s under-rated offspin cut short Mahela Jayawardene on 41 and Angelo Mathews for 1, all in a killer 11th over. After being reduced to 11 for 3, including the first-over dismissal of their standout Twenty20 batsman Tillakaratne Dilshan, Sri Lanka were always up against the odds.Daniel Vettori termed the series win as incredibly satisfying and paid tribute to the start provided by the openers, who returned to form in style. “It started from the partnership of [Brendon] McCullum and Ryder – it’s so important in this format of the game that your openers or top three get you off to a great start, and I couldn’t really ask for too much more from those two,” he said. “Bowling is a lot easier when you have 170 on the board, but you still have to back that up and I thought the guys did that brilliantly.”Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara briefly threatened to make a fist of things during a 67-run stand in 43 balls, with Ian Butler bearing the brunt. The two veterans played with immense confidence; Jayawardene was particularly innovative, illustrated by a padde-pulled six between fine leg and deep-backward square leg off Butler. That stand resuscitated Sri Lanka’s hopes of chasing down 171 but it wasn’t to be.Vettori introduced Nathan McCullum in the 11th over, and the offspinner struck twice during it. Nathan McCullum, elder brother of Brendon, has been a steady bowler in Twenty20s and his figures of 2 for 18 tonight took his bowling average to 15.62 after ten matches. He presented further credentials as a clever bowler and thinker, varying his pace in the first over, dismissing Mathews with a ball that dipped and beat the batsman in flight. “Nathan McCullum took that advantage away from Sri Lanka, and we probably cruised from there on,” Vettori said. “Whenever we’ve given him a chance he’s impressed. He was probably our best bowler at the World Twenty20 and he made a difference here too. It’s good to have players like that.”Another player Vettori was pleased to have was Shane Bond, who took three wickets, the first of which was retribution for a hammering in his first over on international return two days ago. Bond took out Dilshan in his first over this time and nipped out two at the end. “Our death bowling was particularly impressive and Shane showed how he’s coming along,” Vettori said. “He’s only had one bad over out of seven. The way he’s handled himself, I think he’s only going to get better and better. He was very impressive at the death. “With the 50-over contest four days away, New Zealand are bristling with confidence. It would be a mistake to brush off their 2-0 series win as an irrelevance before the tri-series, also featuring India, on Tuesday and the Champions Trophy later this month. This achievement may have well set the tone for things to come. Sri Lanka, especially, should dismiss this loss at their own peril.Sangakkara said his team will have to fight to regain lost momentum after they were defeated in both Twenty20 contests. “We gave them too many runs in the field, and it was not the greatest of starts,” he said. “Apart from that we gave it our all, I have to say they outplayed us. There are a lot of things to work on going into the one-day series. Our bowling has been very good in the recent past, but they had one off-day today. Our batting unit needs to start firing.”

Jayasuriya sets his sights on 2011 World Cup

Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya, who turned 40 on Tuesday, has said he wants to carry on until the 2011 World Cup. “I would love to. I am taking each series at a time. Hopefully I will get there. Age is not a problem, it is how you stay mentally and physically fit to remain on top of the game, to try out new variations in the bat and ball,” Jayasuriya told AFP.The hard-hitting batsman, who also bowls left-arm spin, made his one-day debut against Australia in Melbourne in 1989 and was impressive as an allrounder during Sri Lanka’s victorious World Cup campaign in 1996. He is the second batsman after India’s Sachin Tendulkar to pass 13,000 runs in ODIs and also holds the record for being the oldest batsman to score a one-day century, at 39 years and 212 days against India in Colombo.”I don’t really worry about records any more these days,” Jayasuriya said. “I focus on putting runs on the board, to help the team win matches.”Jayasuriya retired from Tests in 2007, but continues to shine in the shorter versions of the game. He scored freely during the recent World Twenty20 in England where Sri Lanka finished runners-up, and ended as their joint second-highest run-getter with 177 at 25.28.He said the emergence of talented young players meant he could never take his place for granted in the national team. “Playing with youngsters is extra hard these days,” Jayasuriya said. “There is an abundance of raw talent constantly knocking at the door for a berth in the team. And that puts pressure on me. I have to perform to retain my place.”Jayasuriya, who captained Sri Lanka from 1999 to April 2003, knows that life is not easy for youngsters either. “They also need to live up to expectations, sometimes the pressure on them is much more than what it was when I was starting out.”Jayasuriya announced his retirement in 2006, but made a comeback during Sri Lanka’s tour of England in the same year. His next outing will be the home series against world Twenty20 champions Pakistan, who will play five ODIs and a Twenty20 game after the three-Test series that begins on July 4.”Pakistan has variety in batting and bowling and we are also working on a few things. Let’s see, it should be an interesting contest,” Jayasuriya said.

Celtic: Mikey Johnston becoming a nightmare

Celtic winger Mikey Johnston is a player with enormous potential at Parkhead. He is also an individual with vibrant qualities, someone who should have been front and centre of Ange Postecoglou’s rebuild in Glasgow.

However, every now and then you come across the sad tale of an injury-prone footballer being robbed of their professional career.

Their careers are short, and when they’re not playing, their life takes on a weird meaning. They aren’t kicking a ball around and have the limelight taken away from them. They also have the adrenaline of a matchday in front of a packed crowd sapped away.

For some players this could be a good thing, as it gives time to re-focus and re-energise. However, with someone like Johnston, it can only be a bad thing.

The forward is still only 22 years of age and is trying to make his way in the game. Sadly, you’d feel as though his time to make an impression at Parkhead is waning.

He only featured on ten occasions for the Bhoys last term because of a crushing MCL injury which had also impacted him in the back end of 2019/20.

Unfortunately, Johnston has also missed the early exchanges of Postecoglou’s reign after sustaining a problem in a pre-season clash with Charlton. He returned to the field in the defeat to Livingston last Sunday but unfortunately the youngster has since suffered another crushing blow.

After the forward was absent from Celtic’s squad to face Raith Rovers on Thursday, the manager revealed that he had picked up an injury in training.

This is devastating news for Johnston, who is in a position where he is probably running out of time in Glasgow.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-celtic-news-duffy-mccarthy-brady-knockaert” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

His contract doesn’t expire for another few years, but with Postecoglou making such sweeping changes to the playing staff and Karamoko Dembele coming through the ranks, opportunities will be few and far between.

It sounds harsh but it might just be time to cut ties altogether once January comes around.

It’s a shame because, with the likes of Mohamed Elyounoussi and Ryan Christie departing over the summer, there was a vacancy open in the wide attacking areas.

The latter is someone to whom the 5 foot 9 wizard has even been compared. Tweeting back in December 2018, Chris Sutton wrote: “Is Mikey Johnston the new Ryan Christie? Celtic’s fringe players at the start of the season coming to the fore when it counts.”

The club’s number 19 has very rarely been seen since and it’s unlikely that we’ll see too much more of him this season if Celtic have a fully fit squad.

AND in other news, Celtic have just been rocked by another big blow, Hoops fans are surely gutted…
