Newcastle transfer news on Carter-Vickers

American journalist Larry Henry Jr has dropped the latest on talks from Newcastle United to sign USA international Cameron Carter-Vickers in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Impressive at Bournemouth

Carter-Vickers had a very impressive 2020/21 season while on loan at AFC Bournemouth from Tottenham Hotspur, as the Cherries just missed out on promotion back up to the Premier League with a play-off semi-final loss at the hands of Brentford, who eventually went up themselves.

The Spurs man played in a total of 21 games in the EFL Championship, winning no fewer than 4.5 of his duels per match, as well as averaging 3.4 clearances, 1.1 interceptions and one tackle per game, helping his team keep five clean sheets in the process (Sofascore).

The Latest: Carter-Vickers update

As per journalist Henry Jr, both the St. James’ Park faithful and Celtic ‘remain in talks’ with the Lilywhites over a potential deal to sign Carter-Vickers, ‘per a source close to the player’.

THFC would also receive a sell-on clause in addition to a transfer fee, should the central defender leave North London.

The Verdict: Sign

Steve Bruce could do with bulking up his squad now as the new campaign looms, and Carter-Vickers could prove to be a cheap option to do just that.

Rated at a mere £1.8m by Transfermarkt, the USA international is unlikely to be very pricey at all, and will have gained a lot of confidence from some of his displays while at Bournemouth.

Nonetheless, at just 23 years of age, he still has a lot of potential, and may get the regular games on Tyneside needed to realise that.

Courage under fire

One man stood above the negligence that led to the collapse of four wickets for eight runs just before tea that suddenly transformed a promising position into potential disaster

The new spirit of the West Indies team, so encouragingly confirmed over the first two and a half days of the most daunting challenge in international cricket, was, yet again, squandered by individual rashness. One man stood above the negligence that led to the collapse of four wickets for eight runs just before tea that suddenly transformed a promising position into potential disaster. One man restored West Indies’ hope and stimulated a sensational fightback in the closing overs of an engrossing day. No one has epitomised the new attitude more starkly than Shivnarine Chanderpaul whose fighting qualities have been so well established that he has long since been dubbed “Tiger”.Throughout the 13 years since he entered the West Indies team as a fragile 19-year-old, he has set an example for every batsman, present team-mates and those to follow, that an innings is to be treasured almost as dearly as life itself. It was a credo ignored by his early partners yesterday.Runako Morton has never played with more maturity than for his 67 but he wasted three hours of diligence with an unbecoming heave at Stuart MacGill, a waste compounded by the fact that it came minutes before lunch. Dwayne Bravo’s typically bold attack included three sixes in his 46 off 60 balls but was ended by an expansive drive off a wide ball from Brett Lee. Denesh Ramdin and Daren Sammy soon went to equally loose strokes. It left them to observe Chanderpaul’s courage and determination from beyond the boundary in awe and embarrassment. In the midst of the breakdown, he took a shattering blow on the back of the helmet from a bouncer from Lee.The contact reverberated around Sabina Park like a gunshot, a familiar sound in these parts. He instantly fell to the ground. The thousands in the stands watched in hushed anxiety. His wife, Amy, following the remarkable battle from the stands, shed emotional and understandable tears.Every man, woman and child rose to acclaim a sporting performance they will remember for as long as their memories do. Amy was not the only one shedding tears. So were big men, without a hint of embarrassment. For a few minutes, that seemed an eternity, Chanderpaul lay still on the pitch, immediately surrounded by concerned opponents of whom Lee was the first on the scene. Dr Akshai Mansingh, the assigned West Indies Cricket Board doctor, and team physio CJ Clark rushed to the middle. A stretcher appeared. The consensus among all except Chanderpaul was that he surely could not continue. He was on 86 and his faltering team needed him. It would take something more serious than a stunning blow to the cranium to extract him from the middle. He got to his feet, shook his head and satisfied the good doctor that he was ready to continue. Right away he was again middling the ball, nudging and pushing, manipulating the strike away from Fidel Edwards, the No. 10. A crowd shocked into silence by the upsetting events of the previous hour again rediscovered its voice.Every Chanderpaul run was cheered as if it was winning the match. So was every block by Edwards. When, finally, a straight drive off Stuart Clark carried Chanderpaul past his 18th Test hundred, every man, woman and child rose to acclaim a sporting performance they will remember for as long as their memories do. Amy was not the only one shedding tears. So were big men, without a hint of embarrassment.Nor were the tears, and cheers, over. Chanderpaul’s heroics had clearly inspired his team as much as it re-energised their fellow West Indians in the ground. As Edwards and Daren Powell swept aside Australia’s vaunted top order with their searing pace and swing in the final half hour, the depression of the recent years of decline seemed in the distant past. It might or might not be a fleeting wonder. But, my goodness, it was spine tingling.

Phillips expects Rodriguez to be available

Speaking to Football Insider, Kevin Phillips has claimed that Everton manager Rafael Benitez may have implicitly told suitors to ‘come and get’ James Rodriguez.

The lowdown

When asked about the Colombian’s future, the 61-year-old refused to ‘talk about individuals’ because it’s ‘not fair for the other players’ (via Liverpool Echo).

Patrick Boyland and Greg O’Keeffe, Everton correspondents for The Athletic, wrote in June that ‘question marks remain’ over whether Rodriguez be keen to stay in the absence of Carlo Ancelotti, who brought the 30-year-old to Goodison Park last summer after previously working with him at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, but the Italian has now returned to Los Blancos.

Rodriguez was directly involved in 10 Everton goals in 21 starts last season, scoring six goals and setting up four (via WhoScored). However, the Colombian struggled with his calf, causing him to miss a total of 11 games between December and April.

The latest

Phillips interpreted Benitez’s response as an indication that Rodriguez will be free to leave and thinks that interested parties will be on high alert after the Spaniard’s subtle remark.

“It’s definitely a hint or a sign,” the former Sunderland striker told Football Insider.

“He doesn’t want to comment on it and I understand that managers don’t want to sometimes. But that’s almost a way of saying ‘He’s there, come and get him’ without actually having to say those words.

“Managers always like to make a statement and I think that might be his way of saying it judging by the way he’s answered that question.

“From my experience, that suggests that the player will be made available.”

The verdict

Ability-wise, Rodriguez is surely the standout player in Everton’s squad. There were a number of matches season in which he showed his class, carving the opposition open.

It isn’t all down to talent, though. Supporters wouldn’t necessarily want the Colombian to stay put unless they were certain that he remained fully committed. Also, some fans may have grown frustrated with his persistent fitness struggles, particularly when he’s said to be banking £140,000 every week, which makes him the joint-top earner in the squad.

Phillips’ comments on Rodriguez’s future may indeed be pertinent.

In other news, this Everton starlet is growing ‘impatient’.

Everton transfer update on White

Many Everton fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Ben White. As per The Daily Mail, the Goodison Park faithful are looking to beat Arsenal to the signature of the Brighton and Hove Albion central defender, and have held talks over a £50m deal, with an extra £5m in add-ons.£20m would be paid up front with an extra £30m spread equally over the four years, and White has been left impressed by the speed at which the Merseyside club are working at.Even though the Toffees currently have four centre-backs at their disposal in Ben Godfrey, Mason Holgate, Michael Keane and Yerry Mina, Holgate has been linked with a move away in the summer window, and White’s extra versatility means that he is equally as comfortable at playing at right-back as well as in a defensive midfield role.[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-updates-4/” title=”Everton updates! Premier League on Newcastle takeover

Lee Ryder has dropped some enticing insight from the Premier League on the potential takeover of Newcastle United ahead of their arbitration case.

The Lowdown: Arbitration soon

The arbitration hearing between the Magpies and the Premier League over the failed deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group is set to take place in the coming months.

The chief executive of Sports Direct has also launched a separate anti-competition claim against the division with regards to their decision-making process in nixing the bid.

The Latest: Premier League insight

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Ryder has shared that the Premier League are set to deny that they blocked the proposed takeover on Tyneside by the KSA consortium last summer.

This is a big claim by the Premier League ahead of arbitration, and it’s a topic which is set to be discussed ahead of the final verdict.

The Verdict: Enticing

The fact that the Premier League are set to deny blocking the proposed deal is certainly enticing going into the arbitration case, as it seems that neither side is backing down.

The results of the hearing should paint a much clearer picture over whether or not the potential takeover can be revived, but it would require full cooperation from all parties involved.

Nonetheless, Newcastle will be hoping that the results go in their favour. If so, the takeover process could be accelerated in what is not an ideal period for them in the middle of the summer transfer window and with the new 2021/22 season set to start in August.

Scoreboard operator Chris Bass explains the over rate situation

Chris Bass the Somerset scoreboard operator has recently sent me the following article to help to explain the over rates as they apply to the different competitions that Somerset take part in

Richard Walsh04-Aug-2002Chris Bass the Somerset scoreboard operator has recently sent me the following article to help to explain the over rates as they apply to the different competitions that Somerset take part in.’No doubt the subject of over rates is still in the minds of Somerset supporters in the light – or perhaps it should be the ‘dark’ – of the home NUL match with Glamorgan on Sunday 30 June. This closely contested match ended in confusion, if not chaos when, at the start of the final over, the umpires awarded 6 penalty runs against Somerset for their slow over rate. This immediately halved Glamorgan’s target of 12 to win down to 6.The umpires were carrying out their duty to the letter, strictly adhering to the regulations and, forgiving the old cliché, they are the ‘sole arbitersof fact’.Only the umpires, therefore, decide the time allowances forinjuries, ball retrievals and other stoppages. No time allowance is made for fall of wickets in this competition, unlike Championship matches.Normal hours of play in the NUL are 1.00 to 7.10 pm, one hour earlier in September. There is a strict time allowance for the fielding side to complete its overs, normally 45.The batting side is awarded 6 penalty runs for each over not bowled before the deadline. The fielding side captain is told by the umpires at the start of the innings and after all interruptions in play what the deadline is for the completion of his team’s overs. The umpires are also supposed to keep the captain informed of any extra time allowances as and when they occur. Also, in all reduced overs NUL matches, the fielding team are given one over’s ‘leeway’.In Championship matches, a minimum of 16 overs must be bowled per hour. Here, an allowance of 2 minutes per wicket is allowed, also additional time for injuries, balls having to be fished out of the river, etc.For each over short of the required number, the fielding side are docked ¼ (0.25) of a Championship point. However, if the rate is behind the target after the 1st innings, it can always be put right in the 2nd.The County Ground message board displays the over rate at or near the start of each session of play and more frequently if it slips below the required rate. This is transmitted by a simple plus or minus figure.’Thanks Chris I am sure that all of the website readers will find that very useful information.

O treinador enalteceu a participação do atleta no duelo válido pela terceira rodada do Campeonato Mineiro e não descartou a possibilidade de utilizá-lo entre os titulares no futuro.

A new-look Pakistan faces the Black Caps

The Pakistan cricket team’s tour of New Zealand, did not take a bright start. Instead the boys gave the team management, the planners at the Pakistan cricket Board (PCB), and the cricket lovers back home, lot of anxious moments culminating into the tension of an unbearable velocity. For no justifiable reasons their prowess and performance slumped to unimaginable depths.Alternating victory and defeat in the One-day internationals ultimately losing the last one, after having piled up almost a winning total of 285 runs, was one of the most miserable showdowns of Pakistan’s cricket history. As it was not enough, there came a shameful defeat by an innings, at the hands of a junior team in a side match. No doubt, the team deserved to be relegated from the 4th to 6th position in the international ranking.Ups and downs may be a part of the game but such a steep fall by an outfit comprising of a galaxy of super stars and some very brilliant youngsters was, neither normal nor easy to be relished by those whose heart and soul is submersed in the depths of Pakistan’s cricket. The reasons almost shrouded in mystery, have to be identified from alleged `rift in the team’ vehemently denied by the PCB and the usual fairy tale of `players plagued with injuries’.Considering the choice between not challenging the integrity of the Board and the quality of team’s management on one side and the `volcanic conditions’ that the team may perhaps be facing on an apparently easy looking tour on the other, one has to draw his own conclusions. One thing is, however, sure that such a wholesale change in the team never took place before.Whatever the reasons, the system requires suitable changes and reforms. Half the team declaring itself physically unfit all of a sudden, is not normal nor is the award of test caps to 4 youngsters in a match, how brilliant they may be. Such a drastic move can upset the balance of a team. The upcoming youngsters are inducted in the side in ones and twos and not in hordes. Similarly the seniors-turned super stars are the `treasure chest’ of our cricket. They neither deserve to be discarded in lump sum nor in unprecedented haste. There are instances when some outstanding cricketers were discarded and ultimately destroyed at the altar of some one’s ego. The same is true for many talented youngsters who were exposed to the hazards of international cricket too prematurely and were lost to the game forever. If we are lucky in possessing talent in abundance, we are too liberal in wasting it too. A sensible-cum-justifiable balance needs to be maintained. The induction of youngsters has surely given a good start to Pakistan’s team in the 1st test at Auckland but the effects of their performance will only be known at the end of the 5th day. Though the team lost 2 wickets with only 52 runs on the board, the unbeaten 5th wicket stand of 132 runs between Younis Khan (91*) and Faisal Iqbal (42*) that brought up the first day’s yield to 270 for 4 was certainly a very impressive finish. The way young Younis Khan is exercising command on the situation, notwithstanding the two vital chances that he offered, he seems to be destined for his 3rd century in test cricket.Playing on a portable pitch is a unique experience for the Pakistan team. Kerry Packer was perhaps the exponent of lifting the turf from one site and installing it at the other as a part of his World Series Cricket a quarter century ago. The behavior of the track at Auckland so far, indicates that the system is working wonders even today. Appearing to be a batting track, if the two teams are successful in mounting big totals, the test will end up in a draw.Though Imran Farhat (23 in 68 balls) and Misbah-ul-Haq (28 in 88 balls) played subdued innings, Yousuf Youhana scored a brilliant 51 in 67 balls. The youngsters making a debut in test cricket had to be cautious, especially in view of the unknown behavior of the pitch. Except for Daryl Tuffey, the other bowlers did not pose much of a problem to the batsmen. With perhaps too much of international cricket played at Auckland, the spectators appeared to have disappeared in the wilderness of other activities. Still the venue produced enjoyable cricket for those present at the ground and the millions who saw the game on television. Unless a collapse occurs and provided Younis Khan continues his belligerent run spree, Pakistan is likely to end up with a big 1st innings total.
