Obrigado a você – disse Neto.

Jayampathi, Withanage impress in Sri Lanka win

Sri Lanka Under-19 took the upper hand in the five-match series, with a comprehensive win in the third ODI at the Gardens Oval

Sri Lanka Under-19 took the upper hand in the five-match series, with a comprehensive win in the third ODI at the Gardens Oval. Four wickets from left-arm fast bowler Charith Jayampathi along with a near run-a-ball fifty from Kithruwan Withanage was enough to ensure the five-wicket win against Australia Under-19.Put in by Sri Lanka, Australia never really got going, with wickets falling at regular intervals. The visitors bowled with purpose with Jayampathi striking at crucial moments. No. 10 Luke Doran emerged as the highest scorer with 26, as the hosts were bowled out with five balls to spare. It wasn’t the best of starts as well for Sri Lanka during their reply, as Sean Abbott made early inroads. He removed the top three in quick time to leave the visitors struggling at 3 for 34. However, Withanage and Rumesh Buddhika took up the responsibility of repairing the innings and they did it in style, putting on 92 for the fourth wicket. While Budhhika managed three boundaries during his 68-ball 32, Withanage smashed 10 during his stay. The partnership effectively sealed the match and Danushka Gunathilake (24) then saw them through.Sri Lanka have a 2-1 lead going into the fourth encounter on Friday.

Adam Pope drops Leeds United news on Raphinha

BBC Sport’s Adam Pope has revealed that Leeds United star Raphinha “should be fit” for this weekend’s Premier League clash against Norwich City.

What’s the story?

The Brazilian hobbled off during his side’s 1-1 draw with Wolves last weekend, and there no doubt would have been real fears about how long he could potentially be out for.

The former Rennes man himself moved quickly to allay those doubts after that match, and while he was not involved in Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup defeat against Arsenal, he looks set to be good for the trip to the Canaries on Sunday.

Writing on Twitter after the game against the Gunners, Pope said: “Shackleton & Raphinha should be fit for Norwich. No injuries forced the substitutions. Klich for Forshaw as MB felt he’d take advantage of the offensive play in the 1st half. Gelhardt on for Roberts because he wanted to try out Joffy with Rodrigo.”

Huge boost for Bielsa

Make no mistake about it, Raphinha has emerged as one of Leeds’ best players, if not their best.

He ranked fourth for goals and first for his assists among his teammates last season, and his willingness to take players on and try and make things happen for his side was reflected by him averaging the most dribbles of any Leeds player with 1.9 per game.

Raphinha’s displays had Leeds teammate Patrick Bamford hailing him after the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace back in February, with the England international telling Sky Sports: “I think, to be honest, he has been a steal for Leeds. I am surprised. As soon as he came in, you saw him in training, you know sometimes with players whether they are good or they are top class, and he really was. He stood out straightaway.

“I am surprised that bigger teams, more established Premier League teams I should say, haven’t taken a punt on him because he really is someone special, and he is young.”

Given Leeds’ wretched start to the Premier League season – they’ve managed just one win all campaign – having Raphinha available for a crunch game against fellow strugglers Norwich is a massive boost for the White.

Those three words that he “should be fit” will undoubtedly leave many supporters around Elland Road absolutely buzzing.

Meanwhile, this Leeds star has given Bielsa a headache…

Kazeem Olaigbe could be Southampton’s next Walcott

So far this season, Southampton have only managed to score eight goals in their opening nine Premier League games of the season through five different goalscorers.

One player that hasn’t had a good start to the season in an attacking sense is 32-year-old winger Theo Walcott, who has yet to score a goal or provide an assist in any competition so far this season for Southampton despite making seven appearances.

Given his age, his lack of attacking impact he’s had so far this season and the fact that his current contract at St. Mary’s is set to expire in 2023, we think the club should be thinking about a potential replacement for the Englishman sooner rather than later.

However, we feel as though the club could already have their ideal long-term replacement for Walcott at the club with 18-year-old winger Kazeem Olaigbe.

Olaigbe joined Southampton’s U18 side back in the 2019 summer transfer window from RSC Anderlecht’s youth system for an undisclosed fee.

Since then, the Belgian has gone on to make 21 appearances for Southampton’s U18 side, scoring three goals and providing six assists, as well as making 37 appearances for Southampton’s B team, scoring eight goals and providing one assist across all competitions, showing how much of an attacking talent he is.

So far this season, Olaigbe has played 90 minutes in all of the Southampton B team’s nine league games so far this season in which he has managed to rack up three goals and one assist, with his latest appearance coming in their recent 1-0 win over Reading.

This shows just how important the winger is for the club’s B team and how highly thought of he is there, despite having yet to make a senior appearance for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

Looking ahead to the future, we think that if Olaigbe keeps performing regularly for Southampton’s B team and keeps racking up goals and assists on a regular basis, he could well break into the senior side at some point soon and go on to become a suitable, money-saving long-term replacement for Walcott if he ends up leaving the club when his contract expires.

Taylor and Vettori star in New Zealand win

New Zealand’s unbeaten record against India in Twenty20s continued today by beating the world champions by nine runs in their warm-up outing at Lord’s. Several New Zealand batsmen chipped in with aggressive contributions to post an imposing total which their bowlers, led by the reliable Daniel Vettori, defended tenaciously against a powerful Indian batting line-up.The India team had faced questions regarding fatigue and fitness because of their players’ involvement in the lengthy IPL and they took the field without Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan. Yuvraj Singh also did not play a part in the match although he was on the team sheet. However, it was because of the batsmen that performed in the IPL – Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja – that India challenged New Zealand’s total of 170.Sharma, who opened with Gautam Gambhir, slotted seamlessly into his new role and attacked from the outset against Iain O’Brien. With an extravagant follow through, Sharma deposited the ball into the stands at midwicket, pierced the in-field at point again, and launched the ball over long-off to take 18 runs off O’Brien’s second over. The Indian fans had been gathering from the latter stages of the Ireland-Netherlands match, making themselves heard whenever the players were shown on the giant screen and now were shouting themselves hoarse.Through all the excitement, though, Gambhir remained almost unnoticed, catching the attention only when he spooned Ian Butler to Martin Guptill at extra cover. India, however, raced to 55 in six overs and New Zealand needed more to curb the momentum. Vettori duly did the needful. He slipped one down the leg side as MS Dhoni advanced and had him stumped, despite a fumble from Brendon McCullum, before bowling Sharma a few balls later as the ball bobbled off the pads.India suddenly had two new batsmen at the crease and New Zealand had an opening, but for a while it seemed Raina had slammed it shut. He plundered 19 runs off Vettori’s second over, slog-sweeping twice over the midwicket boundary and drilling the ball straight down the ground. He and Jadeja produced an impressive stand, adding 69 off 48 balls for the fourth wicket. It was only Raina’s dismissal – caught by a diving Jesse Ryder off Jacob Oram for 45 – that turned the match in New Zealand’s favour. Vettori bounced back strongly to dismiss Yusuf Pathan in another miserly over to finish with 3 for 24 and left India with too much to do in the last three overs. That the New Zealand bowlers had enough to defend was due to a collective performance from their batsmen. While no one went on to make fifty, New Zealand always had a well set batsman at the crease to keep the momentum going. Brendon McCullum provided the impetus at the start, while Ross Taylor continued his good form from the latter stages of the IPL during the middle overs. Scott Styris chipped in with a useful innings and Franklin enhanced his newly-developed status as a batting allrounder with massive strikes towards the ends of the innings. Most of the New Zealand batsmen favoured the leg-side boundary and some perished while trying to clear it. McCullum eventually skied a catch to midwicket, while Ryder, who failed to get out of his IPL rut, was bowled trying to swing across the line. Ishant Sharma was the bowler who dismissed both, making up for the void created by the shoulder injury to Zaheer.Taylor carted Pragyan Ojha for two consecutive sixes over deep-square leg and dispatched the left-arm spinner to the deep midwicket boundary as well. Ishant returned to peg New Zealand back by inducing a top-edged pull from Oram, which was held by Harbhajan.Taylor, too, fell in the 16th over when one slog-sweep against Harbhajan did not clear RP Singh. Styris kept the momentum going with a breezy 29 off 19 balls but it was Franklin who hurt India in the end. He laid into RP in the 20th over and deposited the ball beyond the straight boundary twice before pulling to midwicket for four. New Zealand managed 50 runs off their last four overs and that acceleration proved to be the difference.

West Ham’s predicted XI vs Aston Villa

David Moyes will be looking for his West Ham side to continue their momentum when they return to Premier League action later this afternoon.

The Irons have won four straight matches across all competitions since they returned from the international break and a fifth successive victory away at Aston Villa today could see them level on points with defending champions Manchester City, who are in third place.

West Ham head into the encounter after they knocked the aforementioned Citizens out of the Carabao Cup in midweek, whilst Dean Smith’s men are looking to change their fortunes down in 16th.

The 58-year-old boss is left with plenty to ponder ahead of kickoff, so what sort of Hammers side could we see at Villa Park today?

Here’s what we are predicting…

There could be as many as eight changes from the side that defeated City on penalties.

In goal, there should be a routine swap with Lukasz Fabianski resuming his Premier League duties over Alphonse Areola, who appears to be getting minutes in their cup competitions.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Polish veteran, full-back duo Aaron Cresswell and Ben Johnson keep their place, even despite the potential return of Vladimir Coufal.

Moyes has one mighty decision to make on the right-hand side of defence after the Czech Republic star picked up his first minutes since injury as a substitute on Wednesday night.

However, he may not be risked just yet and it would be tough on the young 21-year-old gem, seeing as he’s kept a clean sheet in all six of his starts this campaign, so he should remain in the starting XI.

They will be joined by Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna in central defence, replacing Issa Diop and 31-year-old Craig Dawson.

In midfield, Declan Rice returns to partner Tomas Soucek, who remains from midweek, whilst further up the pitch, it’s likely to be all change as Jarrod Bowen, Said Benrahma, Pablo Fornals and leading talisman Michail Antonio all return.

The attacking quartet replace Nikola Vlasic, Manuel Lanzini, Arthur Masuaku and Andriy Yarmolenko.

AND in other news, Newman could deliver West Ham their next Payet by signing £22.5m-rated “phenomenon”…

This star must not play for West Ham again

Andriy Yarmolenko’s time at West Ham United could quickly be coming to an end after his latest cameo performance against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon flattered to deceive.

The Hammers fell to a 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium after last season’s loan sensation Jesse Lingard bagged a last-minute winner before club captain Mark Noble missed an agonising penalty.

David Moyes turned to the Ukraine veteran in the second half, replacing summer signing Nikola Vlasic in the 68th minute, and Sky Sports commentator Rob Hawthorne noticed that the Irons boss was far from pleased with the 32-year-old.

“I’m not sure David Moyes was entirely happy with the efforts of Andriy Yarmolenko there,” he said during coverage. “Still the dialogue is ongoing between the West Ham manager and the Ukrainian forward, who he has just brought on. He certainly wants to see more from him.”

The Scotsman will probably want to think twice about trusting Yarmolenko as the season goes on, the fact that he turned to him in their need to find an attacking spark was perhaps a little perplexing.

All in all, the £3.6m-rated forward is lucky to still be at the club, having started just one Premier League game in 2020/21.

With his £115k-per-week contract set to expire at the end of the season, Moyes may be better off axing the former Borussia Dortmund man for the foreseeable future.

He has no business playing for the side again after such a lacklustre outing at the weekend.

It’s certainly not a good enough attitude from someone as vastly experienced as Yarmolenko, who has been capped a whopping 102 times at international level throughout his long career.

Moyes clearly won’t stand for it either as he was straight onto the 32-year-old’s back when he wasn’t performing, despite only just arriving on the pitch.

After joining in a £17.5m deal from the Bundesliga giants in the summer of 2018, Yarmolenko has never really hit the ground running in east London, largely due to a combination of injuries and his inconsistent performances on the pitch.

As per Transfermarkt, he’s made only 60 appearances in just over three seasons, where he has only contributed ten goals and six assists. You’d expect a lot more from what was your highest-paid player, prior to the arrival of Kurt Zouma this summer.

In the past, the 6 foot 2 Ukraine star has been lauded everything from “special” to “talented” but on the above evidence, we’ve rarely ever seen it – if at all.

Moyes should not turn to Yarmolenko again this season. His time at the Hammers must be done and dusted.

Aston Villa: Leon Bailey out for Spurs game

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has confirmed that Leon Bailey will once again be missing from action ahead of their match against Spurs in the Premier League.

What’s the story?

The Jamaica international has had a mixed start to life at Villa Park following his summer move from Bayer Leverkusen, with injuries causing him to miss a couple of games in late August.

After making his recovery, Bailey showed exactly what he could bring to the table with an electric cameo against Everton, scoring one goal and setting up another as Villa ran out 3-0 winners.

However, after being forced off though injury just minutes after coming on against the Toffees, the 24-year-old looks set to be ruled out until after the international break; and speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of today’s fixture, Smith has delivered an update on the winger.

The manager said: “I’m hopeful that he will start training during the international break, and we will assess him then.”

Villa fans will be gutted

After initially seeing Bailey go down with injury, former Villa defender Alan Hutton responded by saying: “He’s a little bit different to some players because he’s so explosive. That’s kind of a red flag. You need to be careful, especially if you’re coming back from a hamstring injury or things like that. He’s that quick off the mark that he needs to be right.

“The intensity of the Premier League is massive so it’s always going to put strain on your body. They’re going to have to be careful with him, he is playing catch up.”

Hutton concluded: “I’m sure over the coming weeks, depending on how bad he is, they’ll take their time with him and try bed him in really slowly.”

Bailey’s display against Everton showed just why he can be a real game-changer for Villa with his sheer pace and skill, and coming up against a struggling Spurs side, he surely would have relished today’s contest.

Villa fans will no doubt be gutted at seeing him miss out today.

Meanwhile, Gregg Evans has dropped an Aston Villa transfer update…

Bruno Lage sends message to Adama Traore

Wolves head coach Bruno Lage has told winger Adama Traore to take the next chance presented to him after Hwang Hee-chan scored twice in the 2-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Lowdown: Contract stalemate

Traore has been at the club since he moved from Middlesbrough in 2018 and he has scored only 10 goals in 140 appearances for the Wanderers, setting up 18 in the same period.

The Spain international’s contract runs out in the summer of 2023 and was previously linked with a move away from Molineux in the last transfer window, but nothing materialised and he duly stayed put.

In Wolves’ 2-1 win over Newcastle, Hwang started ahead of Traore and scored twice, whilst Traore only came on in injury time despite being a key figure in Lage’s opening games in charge.

The Latest: Lage sends defiant message

Speaking after yesterday’s 2-1 win over Newcastle [via Birmingham Mail], Lage sent a message to his winger after leaving him out of the starting line-up.

“This is football,” said the Wolves boss. “This is our job, we don’t have easy decisions. It’s good for me to say, now you can understand better why I chose Joao (Moutinho) and Leander (Dendoncker) for the Southampton again and Ruben (Neves) and Joao for this game, why I choose Adama for some games and not other games.

“It’s not about Adama, it’s about all the players. I think, first of all, they need to understand my way to work, but also the man they have in front of them.

“I never lie to them, I’m here to help, to take the best from them and they need to continue to work. You can imagine one player stands on the bench and the other guy goes inside and scores two goals to help the team. When you have your chances, you need to go inside (and help the team).”

The Verdict: Traore has to prove his worth

Traore, especially under Nuno Espirito Santo, was one name always on the team sheet on a consistent basis. However, Lage has made a bold call to not include him in the starting line-up in the previous two games and has duly been rewarded with six points.

The Spain winger’s future at the club remains uncertain and a move elsewhere could be on the cards, but sitting on the bench and only playing for a few minutes here and there won’t do him or the club any good if selling him is their intention.

Labelled ‘undefendable’ by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp in the past, Traore’s power and pace has caused problems for many Premier League defenders, and he will want to continue to do so this season.

In other news, many Wolves fans were buzzing with this man’s performance. Find out more here.

South ZoneTamil Nadu continued their unbeaten run with a 92-run win over Hyderabad at Ukku Stadium . S Badrinath, dropped for the tour of New Zealand, responded strongly with an 118-ball 134 to push Tamil Nadu to an imposing 342 for 6. He was supported by S Vidyut, who compiled an equally explosive 101 off 87 balls and Arun Karthik, who managed 63. Badrinath and Vidyut were inseperable for nearly 30 overs, during which they added 210 for the fourth wicket. It was a forgettable bowling performance by Hyderabad, with seamer Shoaib Ahmed’s 5 for 67 the exception. Hyderabad, in reply, couldn’t quite get the partnerships going. The task got tougher once they lost four wickets before the tenth over. Anoop Pai and Abhinav Kumar compiled half-centuries but in the end the side could muster only 250.It was a much closer contest at the Port Trust Jubilee Stadium as Andhra, led by Manoj Sai’s 104, beat Kerala by four wickets with two balls remaining. Sai and Hemal Watekar set the platform for the chase of 269 with a solid opening stand of 99. Kerala clawed back with wickets at regular intervals but it was B Sumanth’s 51 off 48 balls which made the difference. Kerala’s total was built on half-centuries by Sreekumar Nair, Robert Fernandez and Raiphi Gomez. It was Gomez’s ruthless assault which powered Kerala past 250. He slammed 86 off 52 balls with seven fours and four sixes, living up to his reputation as a big hitter. His efforts though weren’t enough to secure a total beyond Andhra’s reach.Robin D’Souza’s five-wicket haul went in vain as Karnataka secured their third successive victory, beating Goa by four wickets at the ACA-VDCA Stadium. Karnataka stumbled in their chase of a modest 169 before being rescued by Deepak Chougule’s patient unbeaten 52. D’Souza, the right-arm seamer, caused early jitters to leave Karnataka at 36 for 3. He struck again later, but only after Chougule and Manish Pandey had staged a recovery with a stand of 52. Chougule faced 111 balls in his knock and he had the experienced Sunil Joshi for company in the closing stages. Earlier, Goa struggled to bat out their 50 overs after being sent in. Swapnil Asnodkar top scored with a typically aggressive 40 but the rest failed to build on the momentum. KP Appanna and Raju Bhatkal shared six wickets between them to restrict them to a modest total.West ZoneRanji champions Mumbai finally recorded their first win of the tournament, beating Saurashtra by three wickets at the Khanderi Stadium in Rajkot. Cheteshwar Pujara’s 107 pushed the hosts to 219 but the target proved to be quite competitive in the end as Mumbai lost seven wickets in their chase. Abhishek Nayar led the chase with 52 but when he fell, it was anybody’s game as Mumbai were in a spot of bother at 161 for 6. It was left to the wicketkeeper Aditya Tare to guide them home with a steady unbeaten 41. The win was set up by the left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdulla who took 4 for 35. He pegged away at the middle order and even got rid of the centurion Pujara. Pujara’s contribution was significant in that none of the others crossed fifty.Half-centuries by Parthiv Patel and Bhavik Thaker helped Gujarat ease to a five-wicket win over Baroda at the Madhavrao Scindia Ground. Baroda’s Kedar Devdar played the lone hand at the top with 69 as his team limped to 143 for 8 by the 41st over. However, a late surge by Murtuja Vahora, who scored 50 off 37 balls, pushed the score past 200. Seamer Rohit Dahiya was the most effective bowler, taking 3 for 46. Parthiv led the chase with 69 off 83 balls before Thaker took over, finishing unbeaten on 57.
