Heat, Spartans share points after rain washes out Durban game

When the umpires walked out at 1pm local for an inspection, they were welcomed with a shower, and that forced them to abandon the game

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Nov-2019
Match abandoned without a ball bowledThe second game of MSL 2019, between hosts Durban Heat and visitors Tshwane Spartans, was called off even without a toss due to rain and then a wet outfield. The contest, that was set to have AB de Villiers facing off against Alex Hales, was called off at 1.10pm local, forty minutes after the scheduled time for toss. When the umpires walked out at 1pm local for an inspection, they were welcomed with a shower, and that forced them to abandon the game altogether. There were always doubts over the game after overnight rain hit Durban over the past 24 hours. But the hope of a match arose after the rain stopped in the afternoon. Unfortunately for the teams, the combination of a wet outfield together with a second spell of rain ended all hopes of a contest.According to weather reports, Durban is expected to receive more rain in the days to follow, although the next game – Heat v Paarl Rocks – at Kingsmead is on November 15. For Spartans, their next game is on November 13, when they host Nelson Mandela Bay Giants at Centurion.

Exciting: Journalist shares summer transfer update he’s heard from Celtic

Celtic are laying the groundwork ahead of the summer transfer window, with one journalist sharing an exciting triple update.

Celtic form under Rodgers

The Hoops haven’t had the best of campaigns by their high standards, with rivals Rangers currently top of the Scottish Premiership. Those across Glasgow also won the Scottish League Cup, with Brendan Rodgers appearing to be under pressure in the final months of the season.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

Celtic have dropped seven points in the league against Aberdeen, Kilmarnock and Hearts in recent months, allowing Rangers to take advantage, and it is believed that if the club don’t win the Scottish Premiership title, Rodgers will be sacked.

Rodgers has been talking like a man who expects to be in charge in 2024/25, though, recently saying:

“I’m really excited about next season, having now had a look at this group. I’ve seen players who were out for a while and I want to develop this squad.

“There’s a lot of work going on on that front. Is it a chance to put my stamp on it? Yeah, because I think we lost influential players (last summer) who make the game look different.

“Those players weren’t just good footballers but they were personalities. It’s hard when you lose that personality from the team.

“I had to give guys who were here an opportunity because they’d just come off the back of a Treble-winning season. But I also know because of my experience in football – especially at clubs like Celtic – that there’s a revolving door every three or four years.

“Even if you’re a winning team you have to fire up the squad again. That’s something we’ll look at doing in the summer.”

Should he remain in the Parkhead dugout, it appears as if multiple signings could be made.

Celtic summer transfer update

Journalist Pete O’Rourke shared a Celtic transfer update for Football Insider on Tuesday, revealing that the Hoops ‘are prioritising three positions as they lay the groundwork for a huge summer overhaul’.

Those at Parkhead ‘have made it a top priority to sign a new goalkeeper, winger and striker ahead of the 2024-25 season’. They are expected to be busy after falling behind Rangers, with Joe Hart set to retire in the coming months and a replacement needed for winger Liel Abada.

In regards to specific targets, there has been talk this year over a move for Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who could be tempted to make the move for regular first-team football over the summer. However, any transfer for the Reds ‘keeper could cost as much as £15m.

Meanwhile, a permanent move for loanee Adam Idah from Norwich City will cost Celtic big money, but after making a profit in the last 12 months following Jota’s move to Saudi Arabia and Abada’s switch to the MLS, the funds could be there for the Hoops in what is set to be a busy period.

Chelsea make contact for "exceptionally talented" new Mudryk

Chelsea are reportedly one of a number of Premier League sides who have made contact to sign a talented new attacking midfielder this summer.

Chelsea eyeing new attacker

The Blues, under Mauricio Pochettino, have struggled in front of goal at times this season, despite chairman Todd Boehly once again splashing the cash last summer.

Only three players have scored more than five league goals as we enter the business stage of the campaign, with Chelsea’s only hope for success now in the FA Cup, where they will take on Manchester City in the semi-final.

Once the season is over, attention will once again be on the transfer market, and it looks as if a new marquee attacker could be on the to-do list for Boehly, Pochettino and Chelsea.

Recently, Tammy Abraham has been linked with a return to Stamford Bridge in a potential swap deal involving Romelu Lukaku, although the top target looks to be Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

The Blues are already thought to be preparing a huge contract for the Nigeria international which could be worth over £90m in a seven-year deal.

However, another attacking addition to play behind Osimhen could also be of interest to Chelsea, something where Shakhtar Donetsk’s Georgiy Sudakov may come in.

Chelsea make contact over Georgiy Sudakov move

According to reporter Mirko Di Natale on X, Chelsea are one of the clubs “that have requested information” over a deal for Sudakov this summer.

Heorhiy Sudakov for Ukraine.

Alongside the Blues, top-flight rivals Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Newcastle have done the same, with Sudakov having a €100m (£85.46m) clause in his current contract.

Sudakov is 21 years of age and appears to be at the peak of his powers with a career-high Transfermarkt valuation. Primarily an attacking midfielder who can also play deeper or out on the left, Sudakov has progressed through Shakhtar Donetsk’s youth system.

A Ukraine international, the two-footed attacker has been a regular in recent years and is now approaching 100 senior appearances for his current employers, contributing to 29 goals in the process.

Sudakov has also come in for praise during that time, with coach Marino Pusic recently saying: "He is an exceptionally talented footballer. Talent comes from nature or God, but you have to do something with it to develop it.

"As we always say, hard work beats talent. Sudakov is a player who can and wants to work hard, develops every day, is a smart footballer, and can learn very quickly. All these are characteristics that will make him better."

As we know, Chelsea have a recent history when it comes to a big deal for a talented Shakhtar Donetsk attacker, with Mykhailo Mudryk joining last year, so who knows, Sudakov could follow in his national teammate’s footsteps.

Exit news: "Highly effective" Rangers gem wanted by Premier League clubs

A "highly-effective" Rangers youngster is wanted by a number of Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window, according to a fresh transfer rumour.

Rangers incomings & outgoings

The Gers have been linked with new signings of late, although the primary areas of focus appear to be on two loanees becoming permanent additions. The players in question are Abdallah Sima and Fabio Silva, both of whom could leave Brighton and Wolves this summer respectively, should clubs meet their asking price.

Fabio Silva

Away from Sima and Silva, another striker could still be targeted by Rangers, regardless of what happens with them, with Philippe Clement seemingly eyeing up a lot more firepower in the final third moving forward.

On the flip side, there is the threat of certain players moving on, with left-back Borna Barisic potentially enjoying a fresh challenge when his current deal expires at the end of the campaign. Another player has now been linked with a move away from Ibrox, however, in what represents a worrying update.

Rangers could lose "highly-effective" teenager

According to a new claim from Football Transfers, numerous Premier League clubs want to sign Rangers starlet Archie Stevens this summer.

Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Brentford and Brighton are all believed to be "keen" on snapping up the 18-year-old, whose performances for England at the recent Under-17s World Cup "have sparked the interest of clubs in England’s elite division".

Stevens may not be an established player at Rangers yet, meaning they wouldn't be losing a key starter in the summer window, but such is his long-term potential as a footballer, losing him now would be such a big setback.

The teenage winger made his Rangers debut at the age of just 16, highlighting the ability he had so young, and only six players in the history of the club have appeared at a younger age than him. His former academy manager, Michael Hamilton, has also waxed lyrical about him in the recent past.

"He’s a very attack-minded player, his stronger position is on the right, he scores goals, he creates some things out of nothing, he’s got the ability to beat two, three players at a time and creating so he’s a highly-effective player."

Hopefully, Stevens realises that staying at Rangers for the time being would be best for his development, in terms of getting more minutes under his belt in the coming years, but the lure of the Premier League can be great for any player, especially a young English talent.

Liverpool must unleash a "magician" who could be more important than Salah

Liverpool and Manchester City have enjoyed some classics over the years, but unless the sides meet in the closing stages of the FA Cup, this is the final time Jurgen Klopp will lock horns against his nemesis, Pep Guardiola, on English shores.

The German manager, lionised on Merseyside, will step down from his post at the end of the campaign and won the Carabao Cup last month – and could yet clinch silverware across every front.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

A thrilling three-horse title race between the Reds, Manchester City and Arsenal has captivated fans this season and Liverpool will extend their lead over the defending champions to four points with victory at Anfield this afternoon.

Klopp has to contend with a host of injuries, but key players have returned recently and there is optimism that it could be a successful afternoon for the home side.

Liverpool team news vs Manchester City

Mohamed Salah is in line to start for Liverpool for the first time since New Year's Day, having finally shaken off the injury suffered at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Curtis Jones, Alisson Becker, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Stefan Bajcetic and Joel Matip make up a rather substantial injury list, however, hindering the chances of toppling the Manchester City machine.

That said, the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Darwin Nunez and Wataru Endo have recovered from their respective issues to push for a starting berth today, with Szoboszlai particularly sure to be a central figure in the fight for supremacy.

Why Dominik Szoboszlai will be crucial vs Manchester City

Liverpool signed Szoboszlai from German side RB Leipzig last summer after meeting his £60m release clause, with his quality and combative presence eclipsing the struggling crop of last season, and rekindling Liverpool's stature at the forefront of the Premier League.

The £120k-per-week ace has been most effective in the English top flight so far, posting three goals and two assists across 22 fixtures, completing 88% of his passes, averaging 1.7 key passes, 1.3 tackles, 6.0 ball recoveries and 3.7 successful take-ons per game, as per Sofascore.

To further underscore his value, as per FBref, the Hungary international ranks among the top 14% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 3% for shot-creating actions, the top 4% for progressive carries, the top 9% for successful take-ons and the top 8% for blocks per 90.

Described as a "magician" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, his creativity, energy and enthusiasm in the Anfield engine room will be vital, and while Salah's remarkable potency as a goalscorer and playmaker is unparalleled in the Premier League, battling for control in the centre of the park will be the true measure of success later today.

Mohamed Salah.

Salah, in fairness, boasts a ridiculous return of 19 goals and 10 assists from just 23 starting appearances in all competitions this season, but Darwin Nunez has been in fine form of late and the likes of Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo also have excellent attacking qualities.

Luckily, it looks like both will be in the starting lineup, but Szboszlai will be at the core of the battles, and his performance might just be key to Liverpool's chances of clinching victory.

New top target: Man Utd now want 50 y/o manager who embarrassed Ten Hag

Manchester United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe have reportedly earmarked a new top manager target to replace Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Man Utd manager rumours

Ten Hag has struggled in his second season in charge, however, a dramatic FA Cup win over Liverpool prior to the international break came at the perfect time. The Red Devils will now take on Coventry City in the semi-final, looking to win a trophy in back-to-back seasons. However, United’s form in the Premier League and an early exit from the Champions League has piled the pressure on Ten Hag.

A number of names have been linked with taking over from Ten Hag as a result, including England boss Gareth Southgate, who was seen as the top target previously.

Talks were also reportedly held with Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, whereas Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou is another rumoured target. A brand new name has now emerged, though.

Thomas Frank new top target at Man Utd

Football Transfers have provided a new manager update from Old Trafford, saying that Ten Hag’s future in charge is still seen as a 50/50 decision.

Should the club part ways with the Dutchman, it is now believed that Brentford boss Thomas Frank is the top target for the Red Devils, not Gareth Southgate, following a successful six-year spell with the Bees.

In an ideal world, those in Manchester would appoint Real Madrid’s Carlo Ancelotti, but that is seen as unrealistic and Frank has now been earmarked for the job. The report adds that United could be attracted by his ability to identify and progress young talents.

Frank and Brentford were famously 4-0 up inside 35 minutes against the Red Devils in one of Ten Hag’s opening few games, leaving United bottom of the table in August 2022.

The 50-year-old, who plays an attacking 4-3-3 system, was recently linked with the Liverpool job and hinted at a possible move away from Brentford in the future. Frank said: "Do I have ambitions? Yes. Am I going to stay at Brentford forever? Maybe but probably not. So who knows what’s going to happen in the future. What I know is that I’m here at Brentford and I’m very happy with it.”

Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for Frank’s side earlier this season, saying: “Top performance, top result, super difficult opponent. Whatever happens on the pitch, they will have a set-piece and if they have one, how horrible is that? And then outside of set-pieces, they have really good ideas.

“More than 20 years ago when I started my career [with Mainz 05], I wanted to create a team that nobody wants to play against, and we faced that team today. The chances they had in the first half. These moments, horrible. Couldn't respect it anymore, but they're horrible.”

Mumbai opener Prithvi Shaw was taken off the field after he injured his left shoulder while fielding during the Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka on Friday. The incident happened in the third session at the Bandra Kurla Complex ground when Shaw dived to save an overthrow.Shaw is in the India A squad for the upcoming New Zealand tour and the team is set to leave on January 10. He is also part of the limited-overs series and the four-day matches to be played there.A PTI report quoted Mumbai captain Suryakumar Yadav as saying, “He (Shaw) looks better. Looking at him on the ground, it was not looking good but now I think he is looking good. Later on I will get to know from the physio on what exactly the situation is.”Also, according to PTI, a source from the Mumbai team said that Shaw underwent an MRI scan as a precautionary measure.Earlier, Shaw scored a 57-ball 29 as Karnataka quicks bundled out Mumbai for 194 on the opening day.December 31Mayank Agarwal rested for marquee clashMayank Agarwal, the Karnataka top-order batsman, has been rested from the showpiece clash against Mumbai on January 3 following a BCCI request. The squad will leave for Auckland on January 10. The BCCI made the request as it was mindful of his workload, given Agarwal is also a senior team regular in Test cricket. Rahane is part of the India A squad as well, but is only likely to play the second four-day fixture, in February.Meanwhile, Shaw has also been picked across formats, but is coming off an eight-month backdated suspension for a doping violation that ended in November. He has, however, been in prolific form since his return. The New Zealand A series starts with two one-day tour games, followed by three one-dayers. That will be followed by the two four-day matches. The selectors have made just one change, with Vijay replacing the out-of-form medium pacer J Kousik, who has gone wicketless in both his outings so far.Tamil Nadu have a solitary point, from a hard-fought draw against Madhya Pradesh, after three matches. They lost their first two matches to Karnataka and Himachal Pradesh, and will next take on a resurgent Uttar Pradesh, fresh off a bonus-point victory over Saurashtra, last season’s runners-up.December 25’Indiscipline’ costs Dinda place in Bengal sideAshok Dinda’s name was surprisingly missing from the Bengal squad list for their Ranji Trophy match against Andhra in Kolkata. It later emerged that he had been axed for “indiscipline”.More than one member of the Bengal set-up confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that Dinda had hurled abuse – without any apparent provocation – at bowling coach Ranadeb Bose on the eve of the match, when Bose was speaking to captain Abhimanyu Easwaran during a training session. Arun Lal, the team’s mentor and coach, was not present at the scene at the time.Dinda’s name was in the original squad sheet, but it was removed following the incident. It is understood that he was given a chance to apologise to Bose, but refused. And, as things stand, Dinda “is not a part of the team, at least for this match” and could well be forced to sit out for longer, depending on how discussions on the matter at Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) go.The senior-most member of the Bengal bowling unit, Dinda was left out of the squad for the 2019-20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and picked up three wickets in Bengal’s win over Kerala in their Ranji season opener. Overall, the quick has played 116 first-class matches in a 14-year career, picking up 420 wickets.Ishant, Dhawan in Delhi squadDelhi, who have just one point so far following a draw against Kerala and a loss to Andhra, will be bolstered by the return of Ishant Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan for their next game, against Hyderabad at home at the Feroz Shah Kotla.Ishant was rested for Delhi’s earlier games as part of the BCCI’s workload-management programme for premier fast bowlers, while Dhawan had been out of action after picking up an injury at the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in November. Dhawan has also been picked in India’s squads for the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka and Australia at home early next year.Like Dhawan, Jasprit Bumrah, who was out with a stress fracture of the back since the end of India’s tour of the West Indies in August, was picked in the India limited-overs squads and will also feature in Gujarat’s next game, against Kerala in Surat. However, Bumrah eventually sat out of the game. Gujarat currently have six points after their eight-wicket win against Hyderabad.”Ishant and Shikhar will be playing for Delhi. My colleague Sarandeep Singh will be watching that match,” MSK Prasad, the chief selector, was quoted as saying by PTI. Prasad also said he will be travelling to Surat to watch Bumrah’s comeback match.Injury crisis for Tamil NaduR Ashwin’s absence is not the only blow for Tamil Nadu ahead of their match against Madhya Pradesh. Senior opener Abhinav Mukund is not available for the match due to personal reasons. And the hard-hitting Shahrukh Khan, who has hurt his little finger, is not a part of the squad either. The trio has been replaced with Kaushik Gandhi, Hari Nishaanth and L Suryapprakash, all top-order batsmen.Washington Sundar returns for Tamil Nadu
Washington Sundar, after being a part of all three games in India’s 2-1 T20I series win over West Indies, has returned to link up with Tamil Nadu for their next Ranji Trophy game, against Himachal Pradesh in Dindigul, from December 17.Making way for Washington is the uncapped medium pacer K Mukunth, who was among the reserves for Tamil Nadu’s first-round match, against Karnataka in Dindigul, which ended up being a thriller. Karnataka eventually won it by 26 runs after K Gowtham, the offspin-bowling allrounder, put on a stellar show with a 14-wicket match haul, along with a half-century in the Karnataka first innings.K Gowtham out of round two with hairline fracture
Karnataka will be without the hero of their nail-biting win against Tamil Nadu for the second round of the Ranji Trophy, with K Gowtham having sustained a hairline fracture on his right foot. Gowtham was thus not named in a 15-man squad that will take on Uttar Pradesh in Hubli, from December 17 to 20.It is not yet certain if Gowtham will be out for longer than one round or not.A Karnataka team official said Gowtham had originally injured his foot during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Surat, but had recovered by the time the Ranji Trophy started. In the first round, Karnataka took on Tamil Nadu – having already beaten them in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final and the Syed Mushtaq Ali final – and Gowtham starred with both bat and ball in a thrilling 26-run win achieved in the final over of the last day.Gowtham, 31, made a 39-ball 51 in the first innings to drag Karnataka to 336. He then took 6 for 110 as Tamil Nadu were bowled out for 307. He contributed 22 as Karnataka were bowled out for just 151. But Gowtham then turned the match Karnataka’s way after Tamil Nadu had motored to 49 without loss in a chase of 181, putting in a lion-hearted performance to take 8 for 60.Those were the best figures of his career, and his match haul of 14 for 170 was also a career-best. However, Gowtham ended up bowling a total of 71 overs across two innings (out of the 173 overs Karnataka bowled overall), which aggravated the injury again.Gowtham’s absence will mean Karnataka will be without two key players who were part of their win against Tamil Nadu, with Mayank Agarwal having been called up to India’s ODI squad, and thus also absent.Assam v Jharkhand game shifted out of Guwahati
Guwahati will not host the upcoming second-round Ranji Trophy fixture between Assam and Jharkhand because of the ongoing political turmoil in the state following the parliamentary approval to India’s Citizenship Amendment Bill. Assam will instead travel to Ranchi, in Jharkhand, for the game.Assam’s first home game against Services was abandoned after three days of play, with the visitors in sight of victory when curfew was imposed in the state. The match, however, was categorised as a draw, the toss having taken place, and Assam earned three points for their first-innings lead, with Services getting one point. An Assam Cricket Association official confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that with “the security of the players” being “the most important thing”, it wasn’t possible to have cricket in the state while the unrest continued.Word from the Jharkhand camp was also that they had been asked to go back home to Ranchi from Agartala – where they beat Tripura in dramatic fashion in their first game – instead of travelling to Guwahati. The Services players, in fact, had to delay their departure from Guwahati because of the curfew. They had originally planned to leave on the evening of the final day, but were only able to depart the following day.Umesh Yadav returns for Vidarbha’s game against RajasthanDefending Champions Vidarbha will be bolstered by the return of Umesh Yadav for their upcoming fixture against Rajasthan at home.Yadav missed his side’s opening match against Andhra as the India team management wanted him to take a break following his heavy workload across four Tests against South Africa and Bangladesh. There has been a lot of violence in the state, and in Guwahati, already. Their security is our biggest concern. So we had to call off the game today.”The Services players, who were in with a great shot of bagging points for an outright win with Assam 74 for 5 in their second innings, still 161 runs adrift of the victory target, did not fly out as planned.”It’s not safe for them. We will take stock of the situation tomorrow afternoon and decide on the next course of action,” Saikia said.As things stand, the match will be abandoned, and Saikia said that the ACA will speak to the BCCI to see if it can be replayed on a later date.’I thought it’s a time to grab it’ – Shaw on maiden first-class doublePrithvi Shaw, who has been in excellent run-scoring form since returning to the game after serving a doping ban, led Mumbai’s charge in their second innings against Baroda with 179-ball 202.
