    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Bavarians are said to open to selling the French international if they receive a satisfactory offer, though it's unclear how Leroy Sane's recent departure to Galatasaray might impact the club’s stance. Coman has been with Bayern since 2015, racking up 339 appearances, 72 goals, and 71 assists. Despite his contributions, he’s been seen as transferable, especially with the club chasing new attacking talent like Liverpool’s Luis Diaz.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The 29-year-old, who scored the winning goal in the 2020 Champions League final, has won league titles in France, Italy, and Germany. Last year, a move to Saudi Arabia collapsed due to his own refusal. Arsenal and other Premier League clubs have been closely monitoring his situation. Under Vincent Kompany, Coman started four of Bayern’s five Club World Cup matches, including the 2-0 quarter-final defeat against his former club Paris Saint-Germain.

Canberra and Gold Coast could host BBL finals matches

Adelaide Strikers are set to be forced to take a Big Bash League finals match to Canberra if they earn the right to a home final, due to venue availability during the Test summer.A potential clash with Australia’s home Tests against West Indies hovers over the BBL finals week, with Test matches scheduled for both Adelaide Oval and the Gabba in Brisbane. It means the Strikers would be unable to host a finals match in Adelaide if they were to finish first or third, and would instead play their qualifier or knockout at Manuka Oval.Strikers currently sit fourth on the BBL ladder, and are every chance of contending for third spot. Adelaide Oval would become available for the challenger on January 22 and final on January 24, if the Strikers qualify. The first-placed Heat are the other club to be impacted. Heat would still be able to play their home finals matches in southeast Queensland, with the 27,000-seat Heritage Bank Stadium (Carrara Oval) available on the Gold Coast.Carrara would be used for any post-season matches Heat earn the right to host, including the competition’s final on January 24 with the Gabba Test starting the next day.Colin Munro pulls behind square at Carrara•Getty Images

The BBL reverted to a top-four finals series this summer, with first and second place playing off for a right to host the final and third and fourth featuring in a sudden-death match.Meanwhile, Australian Cricketers Association boss Todd Greenberg has said he would be open to BBL matches being playing on Christmas Day.The National Basketball League has found rating and attendance success by playing on December 25 in the past two seasons in Australia, while American sports have also thrived on the day.The BBL moved further away from a Christmas Day fixture this summer, removing their Christmas Eve match in Hobart. There is a feeling that a Christmas Night match would be a bigger ratings success, particularly in the form of local derbies to eliminate travel.Sydney Sixers veteran Moises Henriques backed the call this week, but said the concern would largely be for support staff and other stadium officials and employees.Melbourne Stars opener Tom Rogers has, however, summed up a greater reluctance, claiming his mother would not allow him out of the house to play. The Australian Cricketers’ Association has not surveyed players on the matter, but Greenberg said he would be open to the discussion.”There will be people who don’t want to play on Christmas Day, like there people who won’t want to work on it,” he told SEN. “But I get a sense people are open to the conversation, and if you can explain the benefits … then the conversation gets easier.”The world evolves. If you had said 15 or 20 years ago, it would have been sacrilege to play on this day.”But other sports and other models are making it work, so why wouldn’t we open our eyes to it?”

Weibgen, Vidler the stars as Australia dismantle England

Australia captain Hugh Weibgen led his side from the front to dismantle England in a rain-hit game in Kimberley. England, who came into the game with just two points and an NRR of -0.08, are now on the brink of elimination.Weibgen made 120 after being sent in and lifted Australia to a competitive 266 for 6 on a tough pitch. He started watchfully along with Harry Dixon after Sebastian Morgan breached Sam Konstas’ defence in the first over. Both Weibgen and Dixon defended firmly and ran quick singles in the powerplay. England had a chance to break the promising stand in the 12th over but Luc Benkenstein dropped Weibgen – on 20 at the time – at backward point off seamer Eddie Jack.Dixon cruised along with Weibgen and reached his fifty in the 20th over. But Theo Wylie, the pick of the England bowlers, had him holed out at deep midwicket right after. Ryan Hicks and Tom Campbell were not quick to get off the blocks but stuck around with Weibgen as Australia moved to 176 for 5 in 38 overs.Weibgen hit a pair of boundaries in the 39th and did the same in the 42nd and brought up his hundred in the 44th. Wylie knocked over Weibgen on return but Raf MacMillan smacked two fours and a six in a 20-run final over that carried Australia to 266.England started positively, hitting ten fours and a six in the first 57 balls but also lost four wickets to a red-hot Callum Vidler. They were reeling at 60 for 4 in the tenth over when lightning and rain forced the players off the field. The revised target, after a 140-minute break, was a daunting 215 off 24 overs. So England needed another 155 from 87 balls. But Tom Straker and MacMillan took five wickets in the next six overs to flatten them. Campbell finished off the game by dismissing Tazeem Ali in the 17th over.

Medium-pacer Rohanat Doullah Borson and offspinner Sheikh Paevez Jibon shared seven wickets to set up Bangladesh’s five-wicket win over Nepal in Bloemfontein. After opting to bat, Nepal did not have a great start and lost three wickets for just 29 runs. Captain Dev Khanal and Bishal Bikram KC stabilised the innings by adding 62 off 115 balls for the fourth wicket. The stand was broken when Jishan Alam dismissed Khanal for 35.Bikram and Gulsan Jha had steered the side to 121 for 4 when Jibon triggered a collapse that had Nepal losing five wickets in 21 runs. He dismissed Jha and Dipak Bohara in his successive overs before Borson cleaned up Bikram, for 48, and the tail. Despite the last wicket adding 27, Nepal were all out for 169 on the penultimate ball of their innings.Nepal’s hopes of a comeback were dashed by Alam, who raced to 55 off just 43 balls at the top of the order. After he got out, Ariful Islam took over and smashed an unbeaten 59 off 38 to take Bangladesh over the line in the 26th over. For Nepal, offspinner Subash Bhandari made regular strikes and took all five wickets that Bangladesh lost but there were not enough runs on the board.

Maphaka takes five as South Africa crush Zimbabwe

Left-arm quick Kwena Maphaka picked up 5 for 34, including three of the top four batters, as South Africa crushed Zimbabwe in the Super Sixes of the Under-19 World Cup. Maphaka’s spell helped bundle Zimbabwe out for 102, with the hosts’ top order hunting down the target in less than 14 overs.Zimbabwe were reduced to 16 for 4 at the start of the fifth over, and three of those wickets had gone to Maphaka. He had struck first in the third over of the innings, removing both Brandon Sunguro and Campbell Macmillan without scoring. That is when Ronak Patel and Ryan Kamwemba got down for a repair job with a half-century stand. But right-arm quick Tristan Luus ensured that partnership didn’t last too long, as he started the 16th over by dismissing Ronak for a better-than-a-run-a-ball 32, which included five boundaries. Four balls later, Luus struck again to get the opposition captain Matthew Schonken for a duck. That started another slide for Zimbabwe, who lost 6 for 33 in a middle and lower-order collapse.Maphaka returned to nab two lower-order wickets, as he and Luus wrapped the tail up.South Africa’s chase got off to a flyer, with openers Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Steve Stolk pumping boundaries regularly. The first four overs fetched 42, while the powerplay ended with 86 runs already getting knocked off. Next ball, Anesu Kamuriwo got Stolk for 37, but Pretorius continued in a hurry, getting to his fifty off 38 balls to end the 12th over.Come the 14th over, David Teeger hit the winning runs, as South Africa won with plenty to spare. The victory put South Africa at second place in Group 2, with the margin of victory giving their net run rate a massive boost.

The Kickoff: El Trafico returns as LA Galaxy and LAFC clash, Inter Miami travel to take on New York Red Bulls, San Diego FC and Vancouver Whitecaps meet

GOAL takes a look at some of the major MLS storylines emerging ahead of Matchday 26

Teams across MLS are set to play their final matches before players head off to the midweek MLS All-Star Game, where they’ll represent the league against the Liga MX All-Stars. Matchday 26 brings a slate filled with renewed rivalries, key conference clashes, and more as the regular season continues to heat up.

In the Western Conference, El Trafico returns as LAFC host the LA Galaxy in the league's most high-profile rivalry in Los Angeles. A win for LAFC would keep their conference title hopes fueled, while the Galaxy are still searching for a trademark victory that can push them up the table.

Then, the top two teams in the conference in San Diego FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps meet as the sides clash in what is set to be a thrilling contest at Snapdragon Stadium.

In the East, meanwhile, Lionel Messi's Inter Miami travel to take on 2024 MLS Cup finalists New York Red Bulls in a meeting between two teams with high hopes in the postseason.

GOAL dives into all that and more in The Kickoff, a weekly preview of each MLS Matchday.

Get the MLS Season Pass today!Stream games nowGetty Images SportMiami's bounce back

Inter Miami were stunned Wednesday evening, getting blanked 3-0 on the road by FC Cincinnati. It was their first loss in regular-season action since May and just their fourth total defeat this season.

With Lionel Messi and Co. having Supporters' Shield and Eastern Conference title aspirations, they cannot afford a hiccup on Saturday when they hit the road to take on RBNY at Sports Illustrated Stadium. It's a big chance, however, not just for Miami to find a win, but also for RBNY.

The home side is coming off a thrilling comeback victory over the New England Revolution that saw them score five second-half goals after going down 2-0 early in the match. Their resiliency in the contest will now have them confident as ever heading into the contest, and three points would be a huge achievement for a club sitting mid-table in the East.

The two sides met earlier this season, and the pulled off a 4-1 victory in South Florida with both Messi and Luis Suarez landing on the scoresheet. Saturday's affair is surely one to watch as a result.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportThe battle for Los Angeles

It's a storied rivalry at this point, but heading into the game, the Galaxy and LAFC couldn't be sitting farther apart at the table.

LAFC is coming off a stunning road victory over MNUFC midweek, and with three games in hand, they're right in the fight for a Western Conference title at the moment. Star forward Denis Bouanga, meanwhile, is up to 18 goal contributions in 19 appearances this season, and is spearheading their run to the top.

The Galaxy, meanwhile, is still sitting at the bottom. They're 15th in the West, have just three total victories on the season, and are winless on the road – a place where they'll look to be finding a result against their intracity rivals this weekend. The two sides played out to a 2-2 draw in May, but this time around, the Galaxy will be massive underdogs as they head into BMO Stadium looking for a result.

The match may prove to be manager Steve Cherundolo's final meeting due to him resigning at the end of the campaign, so the former U.S. international and LAFC will look to pull off one more result under his guidance.

Getty ImagesFight for the West

SDFC sit first in the West heading into the match, but following a stunning midweek defeat to Toronto FC, Vancouver – who handily defeated Houston 3-0 on Wednesday – will look to capitalize on the moment.

U.S. internationals Brian White and Sebastian Berhalter are both back for Vancouver, and the duo combined for a goal on Wednesday. The Whitecaps showed signs they could be back to their best now that they're at full-strength with the international window over.

San Diego, meanwhile, will look to bounce back from their midweek loss. They were blanked at home by a struggling TFC side in front of their own fans, and they'll look to turn things around on Saturday when they play host to Vancouver. With the star duo of Anders Dreyer and Chucky Lozano spearheading their attack, anything is possible – but a win here would be a massive result for either team.

If the match ends with a victory, meaning no draw, the winner will sit at the top of the West heading into Matchday 27 – regardless of other results from around the league.

Bumrah: 'The yorker is probably the first delivery I learned'

Jasprit Bumrah was the Player of the Match for taking nine wickets in the Visakhapatnam Test against England

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Feb-20241:54

Manjrekar: Bumrah’s impact key to India drawing level

Jasprit Bumrah finished the Visakhapatnam Test against England with nine wickets – 6 for 45 and 3 for 46 – to help India draw level at 1-1 in the series. The highlight of his performance was the yorker that swung into Ollie Pope and uprooted his middle and leg stumps in the first innings.”As a youngster that [the yorker] is probably the first delivery I had learned because I had come from tennis ball cricket and I had seen the legends of the game, Waqar [Younis], Wasim [Akram] and even Zaheer Khan, I had seen them on the television, how do they bowl yorkers,” Bumrah told the broadcaster after India’s 106-run victory. “As a kid I used to feel that is the only way to take wickets. So that is the first delivery I learned. Yes, I kept it with me and I kept on using it to my advantage and now even in Test cricket when you get wickets off it, it’s great.”Bumrah now has 36 wickets in six Tests in India, at an outstanding average of 13.06 and strike rate of 29.5, but he said he wasn’t focussed on numbers anymore. “I don’t look at numbers because when I was a youngster I used to look at numbers. Yes, it made me excited, but you know, if you think about numbers, there’s a lot of pressure anyway playing for India. And if you take that added baggage, it doesn’t really help. So I’m very happy that we won and when you contribute towards that success it feels even better.”Related

Bumrah calls forth thunderbolts from a clear blue sky

Bumrah and Ashwin beat England's bazballers as India draw level

When asked if he felt like the leader of India’s attack, even though players like R Ashwin have a lot more experience than him, Bumrah said: “Not the leader but I feel that I have played a little more cricket. We are going through a transition. There are a lot of new bowlers coming in. So it’s my responsibility to help them and guide them in whatever way I can. So yeah, it’s always good that when we have certain conversations, what do we have to do in certain scenarios, it feels great.”Bumrah gave India timely breakthroughs on the final day of the Visakhapatnam Test, trapping Jonny Bairstow lbw in the final over before lunch, and then breaking a half-century stand for the eighth wicket by catching Ben Foakes off his own bowling. After the game, Rohit Sharma was asked if Bumrah was a luxury to have in the team.”Yeah, it is [a luxury to have Bumrah]. I mean, look, you know, he’s a champion player for us,” Rohit said. “It’s been a while, you know, that he’s doing the job for the team. But yeah, I mean, when you win a game like that, you know, you’ve got to look at the overall performance as well. We were good with the bat and then obviously we know that winning a Test match in these kind of conditions is not going to be easy. We wanted our bowlers to step up and they did that.”
