Conway 78 gives New Zealand the honours on weather-affected opening day

Sri Lanka’s quicks struggled for control on windy day in Wellington, where only 48 overs of play was possible

Madushka Balasuriya17-Mar-2023Stumps In rain-impacted Wellington, with heavy winds for company, New Zealand batted just 48 overs as bad light brought about an early close to an already truncated opening day. Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls were unbeaten on 26 and 18 at the close respectively, though it was when Devon Conway was at the crease during his 108-ball 78 that New Zealand had looked the most threatening.Sri Lanka’s seamers, whose eyes might have lit up at the opportunity to bowl first on a supremely green top after Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss, unfortunately had to cope with some of the windiest conditions ever seen at Basin Reserve.”Today was certainly the windiest I’ve played at the Basin. Certainly a lot of challenge for the bowlers, and we wanted to make the most of that and put pressure on them,” Conway said after the end of play. Put pressure New Zealand certainly did. While there was certainly extra bounce in the surface – Conway would describe it as “tennis-ball bounce” – the gusty winds meant the likes of Kasun Rajitha, Asitha Fernando and Lahiru Kumara were unable to gain the same sort of lateral movement they had so effectively utilised in Christchurch, while maintaining good lengths were also proving difficult.Conway and his more watchful opening partner Tom Latham also proved adept at leaving the ball on length, meaning Sri Lanka’s seamers were forced to pitch it full if they wanted to force the batters into a stroke. It was here that Conway in particular flourished. In a stand worth 87, it was Kumara that took the brunt of Conway’s aggression, with eight of his 13 boundaries coming against the strapping quick. Anything too short or wide was pulled and cut with ease, while anything overpitched was driven just as efficiently.Kasun Rajitha picked up the first wicket when he sent back Tom Latham•Getty ImagesThe first wicket came only once Latham looked to break free, pulling one straight down deep square-leg’s throat off Rajitha.Conway, though, carried on in a similar vein, as Williamson took over the anchor role in a 31-run stand. With the seamers struggling to make a consistent impact, Sri Lanka were forced to turn to spin shortly before tea. And it was the continued use of Dhananjaya de Silva’s offbreaks that provided an unlikely breakthrough in the final session.De Silva’s flatter trajectory from around the wicket slowed down Conway’s scoring, the left-hander scoring just three runs off the 16 deliveries he faced from de Silva. Eventually that pressure told, with Conway charging de Silva and only managing to chip a low return catch.Sri Lanka might even have had three for the day had debutant Nishan Madushka – replacing Niroshan Dickwella with the gloves – held on to a thick edge off Nicholls. It was quick and low to his left – almost a mirror image of the chance Dickwella had grassed off Williamson in Christchurch – but one Madushka ought to have held on to. Madushka has been brought into the side mainly on the back of his batting ability, and the pressure will certainly be on going forward.Williamson and Nicholls played through the rest of the session on pure merit until bad light meant play was stopped 45 minutes prior to the scheduled close.

'A load of babbling drivel' – Simon Jordan slams Enzo Maresca over Conference League claims as Chelsea prepare for Real Betis test

Simon Jordan has ripped into Enzo Maresca's claim that Chelsea will be "back" if they win the UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Simon Jordan has launched a scathing attack on Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, dismissing his comments about the significance of winning the Europa Conference League. Maresca had suggested that winning the trophy would be a "statement" that Chelsea are "back," a claim Jordan has ridiculed. The pundit believes that with Chelsea's resources, winning the competition is the bare minimum, and doesn't represent a significant achievement.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Chelsea, despite their massive spending under the Todd Boehly ownership, have struggled to find consistency and success in recent seasons. After a revolving door of managers, Maresca is the latest tasked with turning the tide; they are currently fifth, in the final Champions League qualification spot, but sit level on points with sixth-placed Aston Villa, so must also finish strongly domestically.

  • WHAT SIMON JORDAN SAID

On talkSPORT, Jordan reacted to Maresca's comments, saying: "I'm going to give him some latitude in that English isn't his first language because other than that, I think it's a load of old, babbling drivel. Anyone with half a brain can understand that if you're in the Conference League, you can't win the Champions League. You'd have to be born under a rock.

"What he's saying is if you're in a competition, you do the best you can in it. If you're Chelsea, with all the resources that you've got, going against the teams they're playing against, and you don't win it, then you should be slightly embarrassed in the same way that Tottenham should have been embarrassed a few years ago."

Asked if Chelsea will be "back" if they win it, Jordan added: "No. Of course not. The clue is in the title, the word 'Conference'. When you think of 'Conference', what do you think of? I think of non-league football. I don't think of a high-faluting style of football. It's the third tier competition in European football, that sucks as far down the pyramid as it possibly can to get some teams in that have got some validity."

Matthew Potts claims two wickets, allowing Durham to make early inroads

Worcestershire trail by 392 runs as Ben Raine adds 71 for hosts before showers force early close

Worcestershire 96 for 2 (Pollock 41, Libby 19*, Potts 2-41) trail Durham 425 for 9 dec (Bedingham 118, Raine 71, Lees 70, Gibbon 4-92) by 329 runsTwo wickets from Matthew Potts allowed Durham to make inroads into the Worcestershire batting line-up before rain ended day two prematurely in their LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two clash at Seat Unique Riverside. The home side posted 425 for 9 declared in their first innings after Ben Raine scored an impressive 71 to build on David Bedingham’s century and Alex Lees’ knock of 70 from day one, securing four batting bonus points to the total.Ed Pollock got the Worcestershire reply off to a blistering start, scoring 41 from just 26 balls before he was bowled by Potts. The England seamer produced a timely peach to remove Azhar Ali just before the close, signalling that he is well prepared to fill the void of Chris Rushworth’s departure. The visitors will resume day three 329 runs behind with eight first-innings wickets in hand.Resuming on 363 for 7, Durham were in need of further runs to shore up their exploits from day one. Raine continued his rich vein of form against Worcestershire following on from his century in the contest between the two sides at the Riverside last season. He sent a cut through backward point to the boundary to register his 14th fifty in first-class cricket.Raine and Paul Coughlin tormented Worcestershire with a record-breaking stand of 213 last season, and proved to be a thorn in their side again by reaching their century stand, securing the fourth batting bonus point for Durham in the process. There was no repeat of their mammoth effort as Coughlin fell for 42 and Raine was caught on the fence before Scott Borthwick declared.Pollock displayed no appetite to see out play until lunch as he unleashed an assault against the new ball. The left-hander bludgeoned nine boundaries to bring up the visitors’ fifty in the sixth over. The ferocity of Pollock’s innings fired up Potts and the England seamer took delight in dismantling his stumps for an entertaining 26-ball knock of 41.Azhar and Jake Libby were more sedate in their approach as the sunshine was gradually replaced by cloud cover. The elements allowed Potts, Raine and Coughlin to control the run rate while beating the bat on several occasions. It appeared as though Durham’s search for a breakthrough would end in frustration as the rain closed in.Azhar was put down by Ollie Robinson for 29 down the leg-side in a rare error from the gloveman. However, his reprieve lasted only two balls before Potts pinned the former Pakistan international lbw just before rain ended the day’s proceedings early.

Saim Ayub, Ihsanullah sparkle for young Pakistan to avert Afghanistan whitewash

A much-improved batting performance and a typically clinical showing with the ball saw Pakistan avoid the ignominy of just a third T20I series whitewash, easing to victory over Afghanistan by 66 runs. Afghanistan were never in serious pursuit of the 182 Pakistan put up, crumbling to 116 all out in response.Afghanistan won the toss, meaning Pakistan had to bat first for the third successive game, and the visitors soon ran into trouble in Sharjah, just as they had in the previous two games. The spin of Mujeeb-ur Rehman and Mohammad Nabi got rid of Mohammad Haris and Tayyab Tahir, but Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique struck back with a counterattacking partnership that swung the momentum Pakistan’s way. The 20-ball 35-run stand set the template for Pakistan to continue attacking, with Saim, who fell just one short of a 50, forming the backbone for the best part of the innings.Iftikhar Ahmed and Shadab Khan took over from there, going after each bowler as Afghanistan lost their discipline slightly. Seventy-four runs came off the final seven overs as Pakistan posted what was, by some distance, the highest total of the series.Any realistic prospects of a successful chase depended heavily on Rahmanullah Gurbaz and a fast start, but Imad Wasim, Zaman Khan and Ihsanullah ensured it wouldn’t be forthcoming. Debutant Sediqullah Atal limped to a 19-ball 11, while Ihsanullah cleaned up Gurbaz in the Powerplay. A brief stand between Mohammad Nabi and Usman Ghani aside, resistance was scarce, and once Ihsanullah returned, it was snuffed out. A wicket bouncer left Najibullah Zadran bleeding and retired hurt as Karim Janat was dismissed first ball, while a double-strike from Shadab – which included his 100th T20I wicket – ended any Afghan hopes for victory.Saim, Shafique take Afghanistan onWhen two wickets fell early, the pattern for another innings where Afghanistan stifled an inexperienced Pakistan batting line-up was set. But Saim, who has struggled this series, and Shafique who last scored a T20I run three years and five innings ago, opted for belligerence over caution. Saim clobbered Mujeeb over the on side to set the tone, while Shafique took on Fareed Ahmed in the final Powerplay over to propel Pakistan to 52, their highest six-over score of the series. Nabi received the same treatment from Shafique even after the Powerplay ended, and though Rashid Khan cleaned him up the following over, that brief passage of play had swung the contest Pakistan’s way. There was even time to spoil an unbeaten 17.5 over boundary-less stint from Rashid, when Saim deposited a full toss from the legspinner over cow corner.Shadab Khan’s golden day outShadab hasn’t had the best weekend, skippering Pakistan to their first international defeats against Afghanistan. Some of the captaincy decisions were questionable, and the call to bat first in the second game after Afghanistan had romped to an easy chase in the first drew considerable fire. It was all compounded by post-match remarks about missing Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan that can’t have helped their young top-order replacements feel too flash about themselves. But Monday brought one of those irresistible Shadab performances that throw into sharp relief what a phenomenal cricketer the he is. A valuable death-overs cameo that saw him smash a 17-ball 28 took Pakistan well above par on this surface, ensuring they carried the momentum with them at the changeover. He was equally impressive with ball in hand, too, there to strike the telling blows at different stages of the innings. Ibrahim Zadran was beaten in the flight in his first over, before a double-strike in his third put paid to Ghani and Mujeeb, giving him his 100th and 101st wickets in the process. His figures of 4-0-13-3 didn’t flatter him in the least.Ihsanullah brings the heatDifferent Pakistani fast bowler, same intimidating results. Ihsanullah hit the heights that have almost become second nature to him over the past six weeks, but a microcosm of all that he brings to this side was on display in a scintillating 11th over. His pace well into the high 140s kph and the asking rate rising, a suicidal run brought about the run-out of Nabi, with new man Najibullah entering on strike. By now, Ihsanullah had begun to favour a shorter length and a devilish first ball had the batter fending at one that deflected off the bat straight into the unprotected jawline. The blood gushed as Najibullah was forced off, needing a concussion substitute in Azmatullah Omarzai. But Ihsanullah wasn’t going to go soft. A similarly brutish delivery first up to Janat was spliced into the air for Haris to take a straightforward catch, before Rashid got out of the way of a 145kph bouncer. For now, it wasn’t about run-scoring, but basic self-preservation.

Laurie Evans century tops huge Surrey win as records tumble at Glamorgan

A record-breaking batting performance from Laurie Evans and his Surrey teammates set up a 65-run victory against Glamorgan in their Vitality Blast match in Cardiff.Evans made the highest score against Glamorgan and the highest score on this ground as Surrey also set a record total at Sophia Gardens. With Sam Curran and Will Jacks both making runs, Surrey set Glamorgan a target of 237 to win. This was a hard enough task but with big hitting all-rounder Dan Douthwaite unable to bat, having only managing to bowl 10 balls before he left the field, it became even harder.Glamorgan eventually reached 171 for 8 as Surrey closed out a comfortable win with Sam Northeast’s 76 the only significant score from the home side.Surrey won the toss and elected to bat and were electrifying from the start of their innings. Jacks gave Evans great support in an opening stand that brought 115 runs from just 64 balls. Jacks was dismissed when he was trapped lbw by Glamorgan’s Australian leg-spinner Peter Hatzoglou for 46 from 29 balls. While Evans had been the aggressor in his stand with Jacks it was Curran who took on the role when he walked into bat at three. In innings that was full of outrageous shots, seven of which were smoked over the boundary for six, it was the three balls Curran hit over the rope in Prem Sisodiya’s final over that will live longest in the memory. The last of these was a shot where Curran danced down the pitch a long way from where the ball pitched and still managed to straight drive it for six.It was in that same Sisodiya over that Glamorgan nearly had some respite from the partnership between Curran and Evans, but Kiran Carlson, playing with a dislocated finger he sustained in Sunday’s match against Sussex, put down a catch at long on when Evans was on 94.Evans made the most of his chance to score his third hundred in T20 cricket and his first for Surrey. His career best 118 not out came from 60 balls and contained 12 fours and six sixes.Curran departed in the final over, caught by Colin Ingram at long on going for another six, as Surrey posted 236 for 2, the highest total made on this ground, going past the 216 for 5 that Glamorgan made against Hampshire in 2019.Glamorgan were left with a near insurmountable task of going at nearly 12 runs an over from the very start of their innings and they were two wickets down inside the powerplay with Carlson and Callum Taylor both falling inside the first six overs.Glamorgan came into this match with four wins from five matches and most of that success has been down to the form of Ingram and Chris Cooke. There was a rare failure for both of them with Ingram dismissed for 11 by Sunil Narine and Cooke clean bowled by Gus Atkinson for 12.With Cooke and Ingram gone it was left to Northeast to try and bring some respectability to the Glamorgan total and his half-century the only bright spot on a tough day for his side.

Yorkshire will ramp up security levels for the third men’s Ashes Test at Headingley this week, following a pitch invasion by Just Stop Oil protesters during the second Test at Lord’s.Three people were charged with aggravated trespass on the first day of the Lord’s Test. Two of them – Daniel Knorr, 21 and Jacob Bourne, 26 – ran onto the pitch carrying orange powder paint while a third – Judit Murray, 69 – was stopped by security before reaching the playing surface.Players ignored the ECB’s security briefings and physically prevented the protesters reaching the pitch and disrupting the match by covering it with powder, with David Warner, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow all intervening.Related

Knorr, Bourne and Murray were released on bail and will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on July 31.Just Stop Oil, a coalition of environmental action groups, have disrupted several high-profile sporting events in the UK over the past 18 months including Premier League football matches, the final of rugby union’s Premiership and the World Snooker Championship. In a statement, the group criticised Lord’s for its sponsorship deal with JP Morgan Chase, the financial services provider, which it described as “the world’s worst ‘fossil bank'”, citing the 2021 report ‘Banking on Climate Chaos’.The Times reported that a team of “sprinter stewards” have been hired by Yorkshire for their speed and agility and will be tasked with preventing damage to the pitch if protesters make it past the initial perimeter security.A Yorkshire spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo: “The Ashes is a truly special occasion, and we want everybody visiting Headingley to have an incredible time watching first-class cricket at our iconic venue.”The wellbeing of players, officials and spectators is paramount, and we are implementing appropriate measures to do everything within our control to keep everyone safe. Clearly, some incidents at Lord’s have heightened the interest and exposure of the third Test.”We will continue to work closely with both the ECB and West Yorkshire Police to ensure our safety measures are proportionate for this fixture.”Stokes, England’s captain, and his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins are both anticipating a boisterous atmosphere at Headingley for the third Test, which starts on Thursday – not least after Bairstow was controversially stumped by Alex Carey at Lord’s.Headingley’s Western Terrace carries a similar reputation to the Eric Hollies Stand at Edgbaston. “I definitely think it’s going to be ramped up,” Stokes said. “We get it in Australia: 90,000 Australians at the MCG all cursing at you.” Tickets have sold out for all five days of the Leeds Test.Cummins has previously voiced his support for action against climate change and helping the sport become carbon neutral, launching the campaign group Cricket for Climate last year. When asked about the Just Stop Oil protest, Cummins said: “I think there’s better ways to go about it.”
