Celtic keen to sign Nike-sponsored free agent who wants £5m+ a year

Having already agreed a deal to sign Shin Yamada, Celtic have now reportedly joined the race to sign a former Premier League striker ahead of Manchester United.

Celtic agree deal to sign Yamada

With Nicolas Kuhn joining Serie A side Como 1907, Celtic have reportedly pushed on and agreed a deal to sign Japanese striker Yamada. The 25-year-old, alongside the likes of Benjamin Nygren, will be tasked with replacing the forward’s impact under Brendan Rodgers and looks set to become the latest Japanese player to make his way to the home of the Scottish champions.

The forward is unlikely to be the last name through the door, however. The Bhoys are also reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Royal Antwerp winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha. Following a season full of injury frustration, Balickwisha could be about to enter the most important chapter of his career so far and one he will hope does not feature similar setbacks as last time out.

Replacing a player of Kuhn’s calibre will be no easy task for Rodgers this summer, and it looks as though Celtic are aiming to solve that problem using more than just one target this summer.

In doing so, the Scottish champions will hope to match Kuhn’s output, which saw him score 21 goals and assist another 15 last season.

Idah upgrade: Celtic in the race to sign £6.8m "complete number 9"

As Brendan Rodgers seeks to add more attacking firepower to his Celtic squad, could the Hoops sign a “quality” striker even better than Adam Idah?

1 ByBen Gray Jul 11, 2025

Whether Yamada, Balickwisha and Benjamin Nygren have enough firepower to put up similar numbers remains the big question, but it doesn’t look as though Celtic are ready to leave things to chance. Instead, the Bhoys have reportedly joined the race to sign another reinforcement.

Celtic join race to sign free agent Calvert-Lewin

According to Caught Offside, Celtic are now interested in signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin ahead of the likes of Manchester United this summer. The Englishman is currently a free agent after leaving Everton earlier this summer and has attracted interest from a number of clubs as a result.

Even as a free agent, however, the forward won’t come cheap amid reports that he’s set to demand as much as £100,000-a-week, £5.2m a year, to sign for his next club. It’s already a salary that has forced Manchester United to hesitate, and it is, therefore, one that Celtic will certainly need to assess.

After scoring 57 Premier League goals during his time at Everton, Calvert-Lewin, who is sponsored by Nike, is certainly a proven goalscorer at the top level. But there will remain question marks over his ability to get back to his best and avoid injuries.

Calvert-Lewin was once described as “excellent” by former Everton boss Sean Dyche, but there are simply question marks that Celtic can’t afford to have when chasing a player who’s reportedly demanding as much as £100,000-a-week.

Worth more than Guehi & Kerkez: Slot has hit gold on Liverpool "superstar"

Liverpool made mincemeat of the Premier League’s finest in 2024/25, winning the title in Arne Slot’s first season at the helm.

Such was their dominance that a late-season sojourn over in the Gulf states was permitted while rivals worked toward positive finishes to the term.

This wasn’t the case for the Anfield side; far from it. However, 2025/26 will bring a new campaign and Liverpool are acting like it, using their pull, heightened by the recent success, to sign Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, as well as Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez.

Liverpool like to pluck exciting talents from their divisional rivals, and this summer is proving no different. Indeed, with a fee agreed with Leverkusen for the £34m sale of Jarell Quansah and Ibrahima Konate’s future uncertain as he enters the final year of his contract, Real Madrid lurking, is it any surprise that sporting director Richard Hughes is hoping to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi?

Why Liverpool target players like Kerkez & Guehi

Liverpool might have broken the British transfer record this month (should Wirtz’s fixed £100m fee be expanded by the £16m in add-ons), but the Merseysiders tend to walk down a less-beaten path, signing up-and-coming talents from clubs settled lower down the Premier League ladder.

Take Andy Robertson, for example, signed from Hull City for just £10m back in 2017. He’s since solidified his name among the division’s all-time great full-backs.

And how could we forget Gini Wijnaldum? The Dutchman was the industrious, metronomic heartbeat which kept Klopp’s system ticking, purloined from Newcastle United after their relegation to the Championship.

Shoutout Xherdan Shaqiri, too.

The point is, Liverpool run their club intelligently, identifying players proven in the Premier League and with plenty of scope for growth. Manchester United, with their Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, may well have taken a leaf from their rival.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp

While FSG are in a position to sign superstars like Wirtz, they haven’t lost track of their roots: Kerkez, signed for £40m, is evidence of his, hailing from the south coast, while the 24-year-old Guehi would also align with this tried-and-tested Merseyside method, having been at the centre of transfer rumours in recent days that suggest Liverpool would be willing to pay £50m to snap him up.

Slot will have had his say in identifying such players, looking to bring them to Anfield, but he is benefiting somewhat from the club’s prowess when Klopp was at the helm. Certainly, there’s one star in particular who aligns with the discussed method who should be the barometer from which to judge an addition’s success.

Liverpool have struck gold on Premier League signing

Like Kerkez and Virgil van Dijk before him, Alexis Mac Allister has proved a stunning signing for Liverpool, joining the club from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth £35m two years ago.

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister

His first term, the Argentina international, who was instrumental in his nation’s 2022 World Cup triumph, filled in as a holding midfielder after the Anfield side failed in a bid to land Moises Caicedo; since, with Slot in charge, he’s moved back into a more expansive midfield role, winning silverware in both seasons on Merseyside.

One constant, however, has been Mac Allister’s brilliance in the centre of the park. The 26-year-old has only gone from strength to strength after switching the Seagulls for the Liverbird, with pundit Joe Cole even declaring him a “superstar” who “can play anywhere”.

Take a look at the table above. What do you see? Curiously, Mac Allister has shifted roles under Slot, less active and frenetic in his play, calmed into a controlling force which channels the flow of the coach’s ball-playing vision.

The South American star perhaps said it best himself: “In terms of the change, perhaps with Jürgen I played as a lone five [holding midfielder]. So, the position was very different. I was much more defensive than anything else.

“So, the system has changed a little, but the main ideas are the same. I think perhaps the big change is in having that patience to have longer periods of possession and dominate games more and obviously that creates more chances.”

Alexis Mac Allister celebrates for Liverpool

It’s certainly showcased through the metrics: as per FBref, Mac Allister ranked among the top 20% of midfielders in the Premier League last year for goal involvements, the top 16% for progressive passes, the top 14% for shot-creating actions and the top 13% for tackles per 90.

He’s the real deal, having ballooned in value and technical quality since making the leap. It’s a rise that Slot and co will no doubt hope Kerkez will follow, and Guehi too, should he sign from Palace this summer.

The fiesty midfielder’s progress at Liverpool has even impelled Real Madrid to come knocking on the door, with reports earlier in the year suggesting Florentino Perez would be willing to fork out some €90m (£76m) for the maestro, who has been earmarked as a potential long-term successor to Luka Modric’s soon-to-be vacant locker at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Naturally, this puts him in a much higher bracket than Kerkez and Guehi, but we must caveat that with a firm ‘for now’, as the ball-playing specialist may yet find his new and potential teammates to be rivalling him on the financial scales down the line.

Liverpool know their stuff, work with a calculated eye to sign up-and-coming Premier League stars and bring them up to elite status, when certain other high-station clubs then come sniffing around for fully developed product.

Yuzvendra Chahal leads the way as Leicestershire spun out

Indian leg spinner combined with Rob Keogh as seven Leicestershire wickets fell to spin on day one

ECB Reporters Network17-Sep-2024Spin duo Yuzvendra Chahal and Rob Keogh combined forces again to share seven wickets and give Northamptonshire the upper hand on the opening day of their Vitality County Championship game against Leicestershire. The pair, who bowled Northamptonshire to their first victory of the Division Two campaign last week, dismissed the visitors for 203 at Wantage Road, with Chahal taking 4 for 82 and Keogh 3 for 20. Opener Sol Budinger’s 56 was the only score of note for Leicestershire, who opted to bat after winning the toss but struggled to get to grips with the home spinners.Paceman Scott Currie picked up two wickets as Northamptonshire reached stumps at 134 for 3 in reply, with James Sales undefeated on 34.Rishi Patel, who blazed a majestic hundred during Leicestershire’s Vitality Blast visit to Northampton earlier in the summer, registered a duck this time as he fell to Saif Zaib’s low catch at point.Budinger, back in the Foxes’ four-day line-up for the first time since late June, cracked Ben Sanderson for successive off-side boundaries, while Ian Holland looked more skittish at the crease. Holland batted almost an hour for 12 before he fell victim to Chahal’s third ball, bowled attempting an ambitious reverse paddle – and the Indian leg-spinner was unlucky not to gain further reward prior to lunch.Chahal had strong lbw appeals against both Lewis Hill and Budinger turned down, but it was fellow spinner Keogh who achieved the breakthrough just before the interval, castling the Leicestershire skipper for 32 with one that pitched and turned. Rehan Ahmed should have followed without scoring soon after the resumption, driving Chahal straight to mid-on only for Sanderson to fumble the catch, one of several instances of sloppiness in the field.Despite that, Northamptonshire captured wickets at regular intervals, with Budinger – having reached his first half-century of the campaign – leg before to Jack White and Louis Kimber nudging Sanderson behind. Rehan belted Chahal over the top for two sixes in his quickfire 30, but picked out the long-off fielder when he tried it a third time before Ben Cox swung and missed to provide the spinner with another wicket.Liam Trevaskis, who survived what looked suspiciously like a bat-pad catch off Keogh, did enough to shepherd the Leicestershire innings beyond 200, finishing unbeaten on 25 as the spinners cleaned up the tail on the stroke of tea.Luke Procter launched the home side’s response with an unconvincing edge off Holland that whistled between first and second slips, but the skipper soon settled down and advanced the scoring rate with a series of cleaner strokes. Having rattled off an uncharacteristically rapid 38 from 36 balls, Procter was caught behind swishing outside off stump at Currie – who also pinned George Bartlett in front for a fifth-ball duck in his next over.Gus Miller batted solidly, digging out a vicious yorker from Currie before he began to play with greater freedom and looked on course for a maiden half-century as he dispatched successive Tom Scriven deliveries to the rope. However, those hopes were dashed when Miller was given out lbw to Scriven for 37, despite appearing to get a thick edge onto his pads and it was left to Sales and Keogh to steer their side through to the close.

Amorim think's he's ideal: Man Utd in talks for £60m Gyokeres alternative

Manchester United are now in talks to sign an “incredible” striker who Ruben Amorim thinks is a perfect fit, according to a report.

Man Utd's striker pursuit takes new twist

Man United have set out to sign a new striker this summer, with Viktor Gyokeres being identified as a potential target, having recently made calls in an attempt to lure the Sweden international to Old Trafford.

The 27-year-old is determined to leave Sporting this summer, even threatening to speak to the media himself if the Portuguese club continue to stand in his way.

The Sporting star is worried that the £68m asking price could deter potential suitors from making a move, with the forward dreaming of making a move to Arsenal, and there has now been a new update on his future.

Sporting Club's Viktor Gyokeres.

According to a report from The Mirror, United have now accepted defeat in the race for Gyokeres, as they are convinced he would rather sign for Mikel Arteta’s side, meaning they have now moved on to alternative targets.

The Red Devils are now stepping up their interest in Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, having held tentative talks over a deal for the England international, with Amorim of the belief he would be the ideal player to lead the line.

A deal will not be cheap, however, with Villa set to hold out for a fee of £60m, which Man United are unwilling to pay, considering he is now 29-years-old, which means there is a lack of re-sale value.

Man Utd in contact for £34m star who's "the best in his role in the world"

The Red Devils have now approached the agents of a player who featured in the 2025 Champions League final.

ByDominic Lund Jul 3, 2025

There had been a willingness to use Marcus Rashford in a swap deal, but Unai Emery’s side are no longer interested in signing their former loanee.

Watkins could be "incredible" Gyokeres alternative

Of course, Amorim knows all about Gyokeres from their time working together at Sporting, and his goal record last season speaks for itself, but there are plenty of signs that Watkins could be a solid alternative.

Unlike Gyokeres, the Torquay-born forward has already proven himself over a number of years in the Premier League, picking up 75 goals and 36 assists in 184 appearances in the competition.

The Englishman also has experience at the highest level, most notably scoring a dramatic late winner to send the Three Lions to the Euro 2024 final.

Man United have made the mistake of signing players without Premier League experience in the past, with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to adapt to life in England, while Watkins has already proven himself to be a reliable source of goals.

Burnley submit enquiry for "talented" £8.5m ace who's held talks with Ipswich

Burnley have now submitted an enquiry to sign a “talented” midfiedler ahead of rival interest from Ipswich Town, according to a new report.

Burnley’s Trafford set for Man City move

Since the end of last season, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford has been linked with a move away from Turf Moor. The England under-21 international played a significant role in the Clarets’ promotion, as he kept a staggering 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship games, conceding just 16 goals in the process.

Burnley want £8.6m attacker after scouting trips to see star in person

Newcastle United have been chasing Trafford for a while and even made an offer in the region of £40 million. However, the Magpies have lost out in the race, as Manchester City have now agreed a deal with Burnley to sign Trafford. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues have triggered their buyback clause, which is under £40 million, and the player himself has now given the go-ahead to the move.

James Trafford

The Clarets are now expected to enter the market to find a replacement for Trafford, with it being reported earlier in the transfer window that they were interested in signing goalkeeper Daniel Peretz from Bayern Munich, as they look to use their connection with old manager Vincent Kompany to get an understanding of a possible transfer.

But the Lancashire side are not solely focusing on a new goalkeeper, as they are now challenging a Championship rival for the signing of a midfielder with experience at the highest level.

Burnley submit enquiry for Cajuste

According to reporter Sacha Tavolieri, Burnley have submitted an enquiry to sign midfielder Jens Cajuste from Serie A champions Napoli.

The Clarets hold a “genuine” interest in the 25-year-old, as they appreciate his profile, but they are not the only team working on a transfer. Cajuste spent last season on loan at Ipswich, and chairman Mark Ashton has revealed that talks have been held over re-signing the midfielder.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are also interested in signing Cajuste, as Napoli are willing to let the Sweden international leave for a fee of around £8.5 million.

The defensive midfielder joined the Serie A giants back in August 2023, and while he played 35 times in all competitions during the 2023/24 season, he wasn’t needed under Antonio Conte.

Last season, Cajuste, who was labelled “talented” by Kieran McKenna, played 30 times in the Premier League, 25 of which came as a starter, and he scored one goal in the process, which came against Nottingham Forest back in March. Cajuste did rather well in the Premier League, and therefore, Scott Parker may now see him as someone who can bring something different to his midfield options.

The Clarets do already have the likes of Josh Cullen, Josh Laurent, Hannibal and Aaron Ramsey, but Cajuste would add some steel and Premier League experience, which can be hard to find, especially at a relatively low cost.

Man City hold talks to hijack £78m Real Madrid star from joining Arsenal

Manchester City have now held talks with a £78 million Real Madrid “superstar” as Arsenal continue to work on a transfer of their own, according to a new report.

City hold talks to sign Denzel Dumfries after Walker departure

On Saturday, City announced defender Kyle Walker had left the club to join Burnley, which puts an end to his eight-year stay at the Etihad. The England international has linked up with Scott Parker, who he played with at Tottenham Hotspur, on a two-year deal at Turf Moor. Walker spent the second half of last season on loan at AC Milan.

As the 35-year-old moves on from City, the Blues are now set to enter the market to find his replacement. Newcastle United’s Timo Livramento has been linked with a move to the Etihad for a few months now, and Football Insider’s Mick Brown believes City will accelerate a move to sign Livramento now Walker has left.

Denzel Dumfries in action at the Club World Cup.

However, he is not their only option, as according to Football Transfers, City have held talks to sign Denzel Dumfries from Inter. The Dutch international has been a key player for the Serie A giants over a number of seasons, but it is believed he could be available this summer for just £21.5 million due to a release clause in his contract that expires next week.

Man City hold talks to sign Rodrygo

While the Blues work on a deal for Dumfries, they are also busy working on another one that could blow the transfer market wide open. According to TBR Football, Man City have held discussions with the representatives of Rodrygo.

Real Madrid's Rodrygo

Rodrygo looks set to leave Real Madrid, as he doesn’t appear to be in the plans of Xabi Alonso, and he’s now held talks with City, as well as Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern Munich and others, as his availability has been made clear.

This news comes after it was reported that Arsenal are not only leading the charge to sign the Brazilian international in this transfer window but are even prepared to make an offer worth £78 million to bring him to the Emirates, a switch that Rodrygo is said to be open to making.

The 24-year-old, who has been dubbed a “superstar” by teammate Luka Modrić, scored six goals and recorded six assists in 30 La Liga games last season, as he was an important member of Carlo Ancelotti’s team.

However, Rodrygo, who is under contract until 2028, looks to have failed to make an impression on Alonso, as the winger has played just three games in the Club World Cup, failing to appear in games against Pachuca and Juventus. Should he arrive at the Etihad, Pep Guardiola may see him as an upgrade on Jeremy Doku, who has shown flashes of his talent but struggled for consistency.

Even better than Sesko: Newcastle agree personal terms to sign £50m striker

Newcastle United lost to Celtic in nightmare fashion in their latest pre-season test.

Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops ran out emphatic 4-0 victors over Eddie Howe’s low-on-energy Toon on Saturday, with one of the main talking points at the final whistle coming in the form of Alexander Isak.

Now being linked with a mega-money switch to Al-Hilal he was left out completely from the disastrous runout in Scotland.

Howe did insist after the game that Isak is happy to remain at the Toon for the foreseeable future, but transfer rumblings away from this ongoing situation suggest that the Premier League side do have striker targets in mind as they prepare for any possible eventuality.

Newcastle agree personal terms with £50m centre-forward

Indeed, it’s no great secret at St James’ Park that a new centre-forward is a priority this summer.

After all, even if Isak does stay, Howe only has a raw William Osula he can rely on for some back-up firepower, with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko allegedly on the Toon shop-list to add more explosive options up top after Hugo Ekitike moved to Liverpool, rather than Tyneside.

RB Leipzig's BenjaminSeskocelebrates their second goal scored by Lukas Klostermann

Any deal to bring the Slovenian attacker to Newcastle would reportedly cost the Premier League outfit a whopping £78m, with a far cheaper deal potentially on the horizon/

As per reports on the continent, Newcastle have now agreed personal terms with long-term target Yoane Wissa, but are still pushing hard for a club-to-club agreement with Brentford, as the Bees remain hesitant about the Magpies’ offer, having already lost Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United.

Brentford's YoaneWissacelebrates scoring their first goal

It remains to be seen what Newcastle have bid for the standout Brentford number 11, with previous reports suggesting he was available for around the £50m mark.

Why Wissa would be a better signing than Sesko

For such an amount, Newcastle should really be pushing hard to get a deal over the line, as the DR Congo international is a far better option than Sesko, not just in terms of being a cheaper acquisition.

Of course, nobody at Newcastle would be up in arms if Sesko were to join the building, even for such an extortionate fee.

Back in the Bundesliga, the powerful striker has garnered a reputation for being an ice-cold finisher of chances, with a bumper tally of 39 strikes coming the one-time Arsenal target’s way from 87 outings in Germany.

Yet, Wissa can boast even more strikes for the Bees than Sesko has registered for Leipzig – despite the 22-year-old’s lethal reputation – with a stellar 45 Premier League goals next to his name from 137 clashes, 19 of which came about just last season in West London.

Sekso lags just behind, in contrast, with five fewer goals in German top-flight action across the 24/25 campaign.

It’s not just goals alone that separates the pair, however, with Wissa also bettering his Slovenian counterpart in many different areas of their respective games, while also already knowing the ins and outs of the intense Premier League environment.

When looking at the table above, it’s clear Newcastle would be landing themselves an attacking diamond in Wissa for £50m, as opposed to rashly gambling on an expensive alternative.

The 5-foot-9 menace is perhaps more suited to linking up with the likes of Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga in his fresh home, when you consider he trumps Sesko by averaging more shot-creating actions and accurate passes per 90 minutes over the last year.

Moreover, the “remarkable” forward – as he’s been labelled in the past by European football expert Zach Lowy – also averaged far more touches in the attacking penalty area over the last year, meaning he could be just the lively poacher-like presence Howe is searching for in the same mould as Isak.

Sesko might well be seen as a shinier, newer thing coming in from foreign shores, but if it were between the Leipzig number 30 and the 28-year-old, Newcastle should press on with sealing Wissa’s signature, especially if they’re already at the personal terms stage in proceedings.

Tottenham now very keen on signing "incredible" £50m Palmer-esque forward

Tottenham Hotspur are now very keen on signing an “incredible” £50m forward who’s been likened to Chelsea star Cole Palmer, according to a report.

Spurs eyeing new forward amid Son uncertainty

Thomas Frank has recently implied that Tottenham will soon have to make a big decision about Son Heung-min’s future, with the manager saying: “Right now I have a player that is fully committed and training well, and will play tomorrow. If a player has been at a club a long time, then there will always be a decision for the club to take, of course.

“Because, there is something in it if someone wants to leave at a certain stage. But the club will always decide in the end, of course.”

It doesn’t appear that a move will be on the cards in the near future, with Son clearly still a part of Frank’s plans, but given that the South Korean is now 33-years-old, it could make sense to bring in a long-term replacement this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur'sSonHeung-minreacts

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Spurs are in talks for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, who could be a like-for-like replacement for Son, given that he is able to play at both left-wing and through the middle.

However, Wissa is not the only winger of interest to the Lilywhites, with a report from EFL Analysis revealing that Tottenham are very keen on signing Southampton’s Tyler Dibling, but a deal will be on the expensive side.

Despite suffering relegation from the Premier League last season, the Saints are set to hold out for a fee of £50m, showcasing just how highly Dibling is rated at St. Mary’s.

£56m Gibbs-White alternative has "begun talks" to join Tottenham via agents

Spurs have other options alongside the England international.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 20, 2025

There may be fierce competition for the winger’s signature, with Manchester United, West Ham United and Nottingham Forest also named as potential suitors, while the 19-year-old could be tempted to remain at Southampton if he believes promotion is possible.

"Incredible" Dibling likened to Palmer

The Saints were relegated without putting up much of a fight last season, but the youngster still managed to catch the eye, with Dion Dublin even comparing him to Chelsea star Palmer.

Dublin said: “Do you know what it is? I don’t want to put any pressure on him, but he plays his game like Cole Palmer, doesn’t he?He plays free and easy, and he gets himself into good positions, rolls players and takes the ball well.”

Reporter Alfie House was also left impressed by the teenager’s displays, describing him as “incredible” last November, indicating the winger could make a real impact at N17.

£50m is a large fee to shell out for a player who is yet to establish himself at the top level, but Dibling enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season in the Premier League, and a move to north London could be of great appeal, with Champions League football on offer.

All-round Daniyal, Khushdil help Lions KO Stallions

An all-round show from Ahmed Daniyal and a three-wicket haul from Khushdil Shah helped Lions keep their campaign alive, as they held on for a 12-run victory in the Champions One-Day Cup Eliminator against Stallions in Faisalabad. Lions will now face Markhors in the second Eliminator on Friday, with the winner facing Panthers in Sunday’s final.Opting to bat, Lions were in a spot of bother at 43 for 3, before Sharoon Siraj (38) and Mohammad Taha revived the innings with a 77-run partnership. However, Stallions kept chipping away, resulting in another slide for Lions, who went from 120 for 3 to 140 for 7 in the space of five overs. With Lions staring at the possibility of a sub-200 total, Daniyal and Aamer Yamin launched a counterattack, their 81-run eighth-wicket stand eventually guiding the team to 263 for 9. While Yamin was run out for 46, Daniyal remained unbeaten on 65 off 59 balls, with two fours and five sixes.
