Morkel's goal as India's bowling coach – 'To protect the set-up that operates by itself'

As India’s new bowling coach, Morne Morkel’s foremost goal is to protect an already well-oiled set-up, and make sure the players “feel at home” despite the weight of expectations.Morkel, who replaced Paras Mhambrey in the role last month, joined the team in Chennai, where it is preparing for the upcoming home Test series against Bangladesh.”Coming here, this is a set-up that operates by itself,” Morkel said on bcci.tv. “To protect that and make it better in small ways is going to be the goal.”When I was sitting in the plane, I reflected that we are so lucky to have quality senior players and they will lead the charge. Our responsibility is to support them and give them the best sort of advice that we can give.Related

Morne Morkel appointed India's bowling coach

Morkel’s name was recommended by head coach Gautam Gambhir. The two had worked together for Lucknow Super Giants during IPL 2022 and 2023. Morkel said it was important for him to connect with the players and make them feel secure to get the best out of them.”I have played a lot against some of the players, I have seen and connected a little bit with some of the guys during the IPL,” he said. “To be now in the camp and form friendships and relationships is very important.”Today’s goal was to get an understanding of the guys, their strengths and weaknesses, and help them with planting those seeds for goals for the upcoming series. That’s the sort of conversation we had today. And the guys did really well. I was blown away by how they went about things, how professional they were. So that’s a good sign and, hopefully, we can build on that.”It’s one thing to have talent and skill but how can you make those guys feel welcome in an intimidating environment… India playing in the blue shirt is a lot of expectations, so for me, having the experience, going through that, and passing that sort of knowledge and helping them settle in and feel at home [is important].””As soon as a player has that comfort and feel that they belong, that’s when the performance comes. So it’s about looking after that and … from there obviously upskill them and get them up to the standard.Talking about his appointment, Morkel said his dad was the first person he shared the news with.”It [the appointment] was quite a special moment for me. I enjoyed it for about five to seven minutes with myself and then obviously shared it with the family. The first thing did was to phone my dad first. I spoke to him about it. I didn’t go to my wife. Normally, they say go to your wife first. But I spoke to my dad.”I feel ready to take up this challenge. I understand and know that there will always be expectations of winning. Luckily, I have experienced that in my playing days and I can share that knowledge.”

Dream Guehi alternative: Liverpool enter race for £23m "high-quality CB"

Liverpool are less than one week away from returning to action. On Sunday, Arne Slot’s side will commence the 2025/26 campaign against Crystal Palace at Wembley for the Community Shield.

The season’s curtain-raiser counts for very little, but it does provide a chance for Liverpool to set the tone for the term, and for the fans to see some of the new signings in a competitive showing for the first time.

Florian Wirtz, Liverpool’s record signing at £100m (which will rise to a British-record £116m with add-ons), is sure to have a few eyes on him, while Hugo Ekitike may well start up top with Luis Diaz sold to Bayern Munich and Darwin Nunez anticipated to sign for Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League.

But it’s not only the Redman that fans will be eager to see in action. Indeed, one subplot on the afternoon will be the performance of Marc Guehi, with the Premier League champions having a vested interest in the central defender.

Why Liverpool want Marc Guehi

Last month, Liverpool allowed Jarell Quansah to leave for Bayer Leverkusen in a £35m deal. The 21-year-old was one of the club’s own, but he never found his footing in Slot’s system, and leaving was for the good of his career.

However, his departure has heightened the need to bring a refined talent like Guehi in.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehireacts after the match

The 24-year-old has become a regular for the Three Lions over the past year, and Liverpool have made it clear to Palace that they want to get a deal done this summer, with Guehi having entered the final year of his contract.

However, Newcastle United are also keen, with it having been reported that they are eager to snap him up after failed bids in 2024. Palace are holding out for £50m, a figure that the Anfield side are unwilling to pay.

However, news has broken that the Magpies are setting their sights on AC Milan centre-back Malick Thiaw, which might have something to say on their pursuit of Guehi.

Guehi would be the dream for Slot’s side, but there’s no certainty that he will join Liverpool or even leave Selhurst Park this summer. If sporting director Richard Hughes fails to get this one over the line, an alternative option has at least been lined up.

Liverpool lining up Marc Guehi alternative

As per GIVEMESPORT, Liverpool are monitoring Brentford centre-back Nathan Collins as Hughes continues to quest for more defensive depth ahead of the new season.

Brentford'sNathanCollinsapplauds

However, the Bees won’t want to engage in talks with suitors as they prepare for life without Thomas Frank at the helm. Brentford signed Collins, now 24, from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a £23m fee in 2023.

Though Brentford want to keep their star defender, we’ve seen how Liverpool making their interest known can entice players, and this is certainly one to keep an eye on, should Guehi remain away from Anfield this summer.

Why Liverpool want to sign Nathan Collins

Republic of Ireland skipper Collins has made 77 appearances across all competitions for Brentford since joining them two years ago, scoring four goals and providing six assists.

Last season in the Premier League, he was the only outfield player in the division to have played every single minute of the term.

Nathan Collins in action for Ireland.

Considered by those within Brentford circles to have gone under the radar at the Gtech Community Stadium, Collins is a “high-quality centre-back”, as has been said by talent scout Jacek Kulig, with an even distribution of tough-tackling impetus and steady creative passing.

Hailed by journalist Sam Tabuteau for being a “future leader”, Collins would bring the perfect blend of defensive ability on the field and an influential presence on the training ground to ensure that Liverpool maintain their levels across all four fronts last term.

And with this in mind, he might even serve as Slot’s dream alternative to Guehi, who has been described as “England’s best centre-back” by one online analyst.

Curiously, Guehi and Collins ranked up rather similarly in the Premier League last season, both proactive and hardy players with plenty of energy and a knack for organising teammates besides.

As per FBref, Collins ranked among the top 4% of centre-backs in the Premier League last year for assists, the top 3% for blocks, and the top 11% for aerial duels won per 90. This array of ball-playing and steely defensive qualities has actually seen Guehi listed as the Brentford man’s most statistically similar player.

With all this in mind, it’s clear that Hughes and the Anfield data analysts are targeting a specific defensive profile, and that Collins could be an astute alternative, should Palace remain firm on their £50m valuation.

He has, after all, proven himself capable against Liverpool’s frontline at their rip-roaring best, once winning 100% of his duels at Anfield while playing for Wolves.

It’s this kind of big-game mentality and willingness to step up in the face of adversity which differentiates Collins from the lion’s share of Premier League defenders; and which, indeed, led Frank to field him for every single minute of the recent campaign.

It’s a mindset Guehi wears on his sleeve, so commanding in the way he plays, but he’s not the only talented defender in the division, and Liverpool could hit the jackpot by signing Collins instead.

Liverpool clearly want to sign Guehi above all other targets on the shortlist, but if they fail to secure their quarry, Collins has exactly what Liverpool and Slot are looking for.

Marinakis initiates contact to sign £160k-p/w star for Nottingham Forest

Looking to follow up the arrival of Dan Ndoye in style, Evangelos Marinakis has now reportedly initiated contact to sign a midfield star for Nottingham Forest this summer.

Ndoye "really happy" to join "ambitious" Forest

Becoming their third signing of the summer following the arrival of Botafogo duo Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus, Ndoye enters Nottingham Forest hoping to make an instant impact. The winger, who scored nine goals and created another six in all competitions at Bologna last season, should prove to be worth every penny of his £34m transfer fee.

After putting pen to paper, the 24-year-old told the club’s official website: “I am really happy to have signed for the Club. It is a really exciting time at Forest and I knew straight away that I wanted to be a part of the project. It’s a really ambitious team with a fantastic history and I can’t wait to get started.”

Adding to that, Chief Football Officer, Ross Wilson spoke highly of the new arrival, saying: “Dan is an exciting new addition to our squad and a player we have tracked extensively over a long period of time. We are delighted that he joins Nottingham Forest and continues his own ambitious journey here with us.”

Arriving to replace Anthony Elanga, who joined Newcastle United earlier this summer, Ndoye’s numbers suggest that he’s capable of doing exactly that under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Marinakis isn’t done there, however. Reports are now suggesting that Forest have taken a key step in their move to sign a South American midfielder this summer.

Marinakis initiates contact to sign Douglas Luiz

According to Fabrizio Romano, Marinakis has now initiated contact to sign Douglas Luiz for Nottingham Forest. The Juventus midfielder is reportedly “keen” on a return to the Premier League after a nightmare year in Italy, with both Everton and those at the City Ground in direct talks with his camp in an attempt to get a summer switch over the line.

As much as things didn’t work out at Juventus, Premier League clubs will be well aware that Luiz is still a talented player. After all, it wasn’t so long ago that the £160,000-a-week Brazilian was one of Unai Emery’s most important stars in Aston Villa’s Champions League qualification.

Described as “strong” by Villa’s sporting director, Monchi, even as his nightmare progressed in Italy last season, Luiz could now go on to hand Espirito Santo the same boost that he often gave Emery if Forest secure his signature.

Danish giants Brondby have confirmed the appointment of Cooper on a three-year deal. The Welshman has been out of work since being sacked by Leicester last November but now he is back in the dugout. He replaces Frederik Birk, who was sacked as head coach this week.

Director of football Benjamin Schmedes said in a statement: "Steve is that rare combination of youth and experience, vision and personality. He is a man who can embrace a club like ours and lift both the individual player and the entire club to a new level. We want to accelerate our development so that we can achieve the ambitious sporting goals we have and, not least, install a winning culture within the walls of Brøndby Stadium. This requires a mentality, leadership and a pair of broad shoulders that we have no doubt Steve possesses. That is why we are very pleased that he has agreed to take on the challenge."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Cooper was offered several jobs in the Championship, but he was attracted by Brondby's history and the potential to qualify for European football. The former Forest boss is said to believe his new team can win the league for the first time since 2021.

Leeds make contact to sign "exquisite" forward likened to Luis Suarez

Leeds United are building for their return to the Premier League under Daniel Farke and have now set their sights on a talented forward, according to reports.

Farke makes Leeds United plans for Bamford clear

Making an impressive start to pre-season, the Whites came away from their first encounter against Manchester United with a goalless draw that will have provided a platform to build on as they sharpen up for the new campaign.

Speaking after the match, Farke confirmed Patrick Bamford isn’t in Leeds United’s plans this term, signalling that he is ready to take ruthless decisions to streamline his squad.

He explained: “With Patrick (Bamford), I had a really open and honest conversation. I would have preferred a completely fit Patrick Bamford in the last two seasons. He knows how much I rate him as a person.

“It was the second day of pre-season when I told him in my office that he wasn’t part of my plans for the upcoming Premier League season, due to the fact that he’s had really difficult years over the past few years.”

Sean Longstaff has recently arrived at Leeds United for £12 million to add another layer of top-flight quality to their engine room. Meanwhile, Farke is also plotting a move to hijack Marseille’s pursuit of versatile Juventus forward Timothy Weah.

Labelled “exquisite” by Joe Cole, he was also compared to Luis Suarez by the former England international, who stated off the back of his goal against Astana last December: “Marc Guiu must have watched Luis Suarez as a young man at Barcelona.”

Expectedly, any prospect of Guiu moving on this summer may depend on whether Nicolas Jackson is sold by Chelsea amid interest from elsewhere in the Senegal international.

Ultimately, Leeds are in need of a striker and the Granollers-born star could be an ideal solution to add some firepower ahead of an exciting campaign back in the big time.

He'll love playing with Mbeumo: £70m CF now keen on signing for Man Utd

Manchester United have finally announced the signing of Bryan Mbeumo, with a £71m deal agreed, finally, on Friday.

Weeks of negotiating had cast a grey cloud over the exciting transfer, with doubts beginning to creep in as to whether the Cameroonian would actually be plying his trade as a Red Devil next season.

Mbeumo, 25, is one of the Premier League’s most talented and prolific forwards, posting 20 goals across 38 matches last season. The likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur all registered their interest, but it was Old Trafford that Mbeumo’s heart was set on.

With Matheus Cunha on the opposite flank, the right-sided forward may well wreak havoc under Ruben Amorim’s wing next year, in a new-look United frontline tasked with leading the revival.

However, a new striker is still required.

Man United's need for a new a striker

Rasmus Hojlund appears committed to the United cause. Amorim needs, truly needs, to ensure that an upgrade is signed this summer, even if the 22-year-old remains in the first-team squad.

This wouldn’t actually be the worst thing in the world, for it would package some depth while easing Hojlund’s weight of responsibility, perhaps allowing him to work on his weaker points.

But United need a new centre-forward all the same.

According to Football Transfers, that man might be Nicolas Jackson, who is open to swapping Chelsea for United.

That follows positive talks between Jason Wilcox and the player’s representatives, with discussions still ongoing over personal terms for Jackson.

Nicolas Jackson

Chelsea have lowered their exorbitant £100m asking price to £70m; however it’s likely that United will still seek to whittle that figure down.

What Nicolas Jackson would bring to Man United

The duality of Jackson. At times, a rip-roaring, barnstorming menace of a striker; at other points, wasteful and lacking authority at number nine.

Nicolas Jackson

However, 24 goals and ten assists across two Premier League seasons is nothing to be sniffed at, especially when considering that only 59 of his 65 fixtures have come from the outset.

Jackson tapered off across the second half of the 2024/25 campaign, but he posted nine goals and three assists across his opening 15 league games, thus proving that with some more consistency, he could become one of the leading goalscorers competing in England.

And partnered with someone like Mbeumo in United’s frontline, he could finally reach the level that his natural talent suggests is attainable.

Mbeumo is chiefly a deadly goalscorer, but he’s also a robust athletic profile and a creative presence besides.

As per Sofascore, he created a whopping 17 big chances in the Premier League last season, averaging 1.8 key passes per game.

In this way, he could be perfect for Jackson, feeding the Senegalese star balls while maintaining his own top-class goalscoring threat.

And Jackson, who has been hailed in the past as a “special” striker by journalist Rahman Osman, is hardly one-note himself, ranked among the top 17% of forwards across Europe’s top five leagues last year for progressive carries and the top 22% for shot-creating actions per 90, as per FBref.

Ultimately, this would be a calculated risk from INEOS for a talented striker who has yet to bring it all together and sustain it in the English game.

But with Mbeumo partnering him up top (and Cunha too), Jackson might just prove to be an astute signing for a resurgent Man United side.

More exciting than Gassama & Moore: Rangers must sign "tenacious" £5m star

Glasgow Rangers have not been messing about in the summer transfer window in an attempt to ensure that Russell Martin has a quality group to work with.

The Scottish Premiership giants announced their latest summer signing on Thursday morning, confirming the arrival of Mikey Moore from Tottenham Hotspur.

Speaking about his new signing, Martin told the club’s official website: “His profile as a brave, aggressive attacking player is one that we were keen to add to the squad, and he is certainly a player who, despite his age, can make an impact on the team from day one.”

The 17-year-old will be hoping for a successful first season out on loan at first-team level, but he is not the only left-sided forward who is looking to make an impact on the pitch for the Gers.

Djeidi Gassama joined on a permanent deal from Sheffield Wednesday earlier this summer and may compete with Moore for a starting position in the team this term.

Why Gassama and Moore are exciting signings for Rangers

The 21-year-old has already got supporters excited about what he could do on the pitch for the Light Blues this season with his cameos against Panathinaikos across both legs of their second round Champions League qualifier.

Gassama scored in both games, at Ibrox and in Greece, and his strike on Wednesday was particularly important because it came just seven minutes after Panathinaikos had taken the lead on the night.

The French winger did only manage eight goals and one assist in 46 appearances in all competitions in the 2024/25 campaign for Sheffield Wednesday, though, so it is still down to him to prove that he can deliver consistently in front of goal.

His two goals in two games so far, though, make him an exciting prospect moving forward, as Gers fans will be hoping that he can offer a big threat as a scorer on a regular basis.

Moore, meanwhile, has even more to prove at Ibrox because he has only scored one senior goal for Spurs, but his form at youth level shows that there is the potential for him to be an incredibly exciting winger for Martin if he can find his feet in Glasgow.

As you can see in the table above, the 17-year-old star has been sensational at youth level for England and Spurs, but it is now down to him to take this opportunity to explode on the senior scene with Rangers.

Whilst both Moore and Gassama are exciting signings because of what they have the potential to be, the Gers could land an even more exciting signing than both of them by bringing in Salvatore Esposito.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Rangers have been linked with an interest in the £5m-rated Spezia star, but it remains to be seen whether or not they will make an official move for the Italy international before the summer transfer window slams shut at the start of September.

Why Rangers must sign Salvatore Esposito

The Light Blues must be pushing to do a deal for the 24-year-old star because he would be an even more exciting signing than both Gassama and Moore.

Unlike both of those young wingers, the Italian central midfielder has proven his ability to both score and assist goals on a regular basis, having delivered impressive performances in the Serie B last season.

The Spezia sensation scored seven goals, created 18 ‘big chances’, and delivered nine assists in the regular Serie B season, as well as another assist in two play-off matches.

Meanwhile, Gassama recorded nine goal contributions with Sheffield Wednesday, and Mikey Moore managed three with Spurs, which means that Esposito was directly involved in more goals in Italy than the two wingers were in England combined.

Mikey Moore

The £5m-rated star, who was described as “tenacious” and “elegant” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is a player who has the quality and performances at senior level behind him to come in as a very exciting signing for the Gers.

Because Esposito has already proven himself at a respectable level in Italy, he would arrive at Ibrox with a weight of expectation and excitement around him, as a player who the supporters can reasonably expect to score and create goals on a fairly regular basis.

As you can see in the table above, the Spezia central midfielder also provided quality out of possession to go along with his very impressive contributions at the top end of the pitch.

Mohamed Diomande and Nicolas Raskin both failed to win more than 6.6 duels per game in the Premiership, which suggests that Esposito could provide even more of a physical presence in the middle of the park for Martin.

Nicolas Raskin

This furthers the belief that the Serie B talent would be an exciting signing for the Gers because he is a well-rounded midfielder who could win fans over by winning duels, recovering possessions, scoring goals, and providing assists.

Two years ago, Esposito also showed his potential to be a threat from set-pieces with a fantastic goal against AC Milan in the Serie A, and was described as a “set-piece specialist” by Jacek Kulig.

Overall, supporters could be even more excited by the prospect of watching him play than Moore and Gassama, who still have a lot to prove, as he has put in the performances on the pitch to suggest that he would be a brilliant all-round midfield star for Martin.

As bad as Dowell: Martin must bin 4/10 Rangers flop for Premiership opener

Russell Martin must ruthlessly drop this Rangers flop who was as bad as Kieran Dowell against Panathinaikos.

ByDan Emery Jul 31, 2025

It is now down to the club to strike a deal to bring the central midfielder to Ibrox before the summer transfer window ends at the start of September.

Taijul Islam's five-for headlines 16-wicket opening day

Sixteen wickets fell on an eventful opening day of the first Test between Bangladesh and South Africa in Dhaka. At stumps, the visitors managed to take a lead of 34 runs despite Taijul Islam returning a five-wicket-haul on a surface that has helped spinners to grip and turn the ball. Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder’s unbeaten knocks took South Africa to 140 for 6 before bad light stopped play six overs short.South Africa dominated the first two sessions but Bangladesh came back into the contest in the final session when conditions became difficult for scoring. Tony de Zorzi looked comfortable against spin and consumed the most of number of balls among the South Africa batters but Taijul sent him back for a 72-ball 30 in the last session to dent South Africa. This was after Taijul induced a top edge of David Bedingham for his second wicket. From a comfortable position of 65 for 2 post tea, South Africa slipped to 108 for 6.Debutant Matthew Breetzke exposed his stumps expecting the ball to turn away but the ball skidded on to clean him up, and that wicket made Taijul only the second Bangladeshi bowler to reach 200 Test wickets after Shakib Al Hasan, who was forced to miss his farewell Test game due to security reasons.Earlier, South Africa got into the act quickly with Mulder, Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj ripping through Bangladesh with three wickets each to skittle them out for just 106 inside two sessions.Kagiso Rabada dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das on the way to 300 Test wickets•AFP/Getty Images

The majority of the damage was done by the two fast bowlers in the morning session when they left Bangladesh six down and hurt them in hazy Mirpur after Najmul Hossain Shanto decided to bat first. Mulder and Rabada utilised the grass cover on the surface for extra movement off the surface while also finding early swing to leave Bangladesh reeling at 60 for 6. Mulder was exceptional in his six-over opening spell, taking three wickets and bowling three maidens. Rabada picked up two in the morning to cross 300 wickets in Tests.Maharaj spun a web around the lower middle order and had Mehidy Hasan Miraz lbw at the stroke of lunch. Mahmudul Hasan Joy was patient in his 97-ball 30 before offspinner Dane Piedt bowled him to end Bangladesh’s chances of redemption.Mulder’s third wicket was set up nicely when he removed the left-hand Shanto going around the wicket after four balls only for the batter to get a tame leading edge to Maharaj at extra cover when he tried to work through midwicket against the angle.Rabada, after bowling four overs in his first spell, came back and dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim straightaway when he got one to zip through the gap between his bat and pad to rattle the stumps. A few overs later, he hit the hard length and forced Litton Das to edge one to a flying Stubbs at gully.Taijul and Nayeem Hasan put on 26 runs for the ninth wicket – also the highest stand of the innings – but Rabada came back in the second session to remove Nayeem. Bangladesh added 46 runs and lost four wickets post lunch.Poor shot selection and good bowling saw Bangladesh being bowled out for a small total. South Africa have also lost half the side on the wicket that’s turning and bouncing but by gaining a small lead, they are slightly ahead at the end of day’s play.
