Kusal Mendis fights for Sri Lanka as Starc and Lyon stand out

The home side were promisingly placed after lunch but lost their way before two Mendis’ staged a recovery

Australia’s trio of specialist bowlers toiled manfully during a see-saw day one against a fighting Sri Lanka on a dry Galle surface that did not live up to the hype, but occasionally spun sharply and is expected to deteriorate significantly.By the end of 90 overs, the second Test was intriguingly poised after several shifts of momentum. Sri Lanka’s top-order built a strong platform to reach 93 for 1 before they lost 4 for 34 in a horror period after lunch. But Kusal Mendis and Ramesh Mendis combined for a seventh-wicket partnership of 65 to lift Sri Lanka to what might just be a competitive first innings total.Related

Kusal and Dinesh Chandimal made well-compiled half-centuries as Sri Lanka batted through the day’s play to reach stumps at 229 for 9.After Sri Lanka suffered their worst defeat in Test cricket on a slow surface, there had been much speculation that this new surface would produce significant bite and turn. There was sharp turn at times, especially in the second session, but it was the consistency and variations of Australia’s bowlers that led to several cheap dismissals.Offspinner Nathan Lyon was outstanding in his spell after lunch, mixing up his speeds and lengths to bamboozle Sri Lanka as he moved to 549 Test wickets. Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc continued to add to his formidable record in Sri Lanka, conjuring reverse swing during a sensational spell late in the second session before striking twice with the second new ball.Australia were effectively playing with just three specialist bowlers, with Lyon and left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann providing the heavy lifting as they bowled 30 overs each.Stand-in captain Steven Smith worked his resources to good effect with Travis Head bowling eight overs and proving that he might just have a golden arm after taking the wicket of Kamindu Mendis.Nathan Lyon produced a superb spell after lunch•Getty Images

Allrounder Beau Webster bowled three overs of seam having not been required to bowl in the first Test, while left-arm spinning allrounder Cooper Connolly also bowled three overs on his debut after replacing offspinner Todd Murphy in Australia’s only change.Sri Lanka made three changes with Pathum Nissanka replacing Oshada Fernando at the top of the order, while offspinnser Ramesh Mendis and quick Lahiru Kumara were included at the expense of Jeffrey Vandersay and Asitha Fernando. After receiving a long guard of honour on his way to the crease, including from the Australians, retiring Dimuth Karunaratne was tasked with trying to help restore Sri Lanka’s battered confidence in his 100th and last Test match. He also had to confront tormentor Starc having fallen to him nine times previously, including in the first innings of the series-opener. But having overcome a groin injury to take his place, Nissanka mostly faced Starc and had mixed results against speeds touching 145kph.Fresh from his nine-wicket haul in his Test return, Kuhnemann was also handed the new ball and had a loud shout for lbw on Nissanka turned down with the decision upheld on umpire’s call after Australia reviewed.Steven Smith catches record•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Sri Lanka’s openers steadily built despite some nervous moments as Smith reverted to Lyon in the eighth over. Aiming at the footworks from Starc, Lyon produced significant turn and bounce on his second delivery that flew down the legside for four byes. But Lyon wasn’t made to wait long for a wicket after hitting the top of leg stump when Nissanka moved too far across his stumps looking to paddle sweep. Australia were buoyed, but inroads proved difficult against the type of disciplined batting from Sri Lanka that was lacking in the first Test.Connolly was brought in just before lunch having never taken a wicket from the 96 balls he had bowled in his four previous first-class matches. Connolly did develop a knack of taking key wickets in the recent BBL season, but he could not strike as Sri Lanka made it to lunch well placed.Chandimal resumed after the interval with a boundary off Lyon before the game turned on its head.Lyon varied his speeds and slid a faster delivery from around the wicket past Karunaratne’s defence to rattle the stumps. He was in lovely rhythm and went about working over Angelo Mathews knowing he had his number after dismissing him twice in the first Test.Mitchell Starc inroads with the second new ball•Getty Images

Mathews crawled to 1 off 25 before succumbing to a slower, wider Lyon delivery and feathering an edge into the gloves of Alex Carey, who has performed well behind the stumps in this series.Lyon seemingly had his 550th wicket when Kamindu was adjudged caught behind on 3 only for the decision to be successfully reviewed with no nick detected. Kamindu could not capitalise and fell relatively tamely to Head’s handy offspin after a thick edge off an attempted cut shot flew to Smith at slip.Head unfurled his now customary celebration, suggesting that his spinning fingers are on fire, as Kamindu’s struggles continued after entering the series with an average over 70.Deploying Head was another move from Smith that worked a treat and his gut instincts were again rewarded when he threw the ball to Starc, who dismissed de Silva for a golden duck after he steered a wide delivery straight to gully.Chandimal’s defiant knock ended on 74 after he was deceived in the air by Kuhnemann and lost his footing before being stumped by sharp glove work from Carey.Australia eyed running through Sri Lanka’s lower-order just like in the first Test, but Kusal provided a counterattack after a collision with Kuhnemann at the non-striker’s left him momentarily shaken. He slog swept to good effect on consecutive deliveries, with the latter sailing over the rope. Kusal received good support from namesake Ramesh, who has been in solid batting form in first-class cricket. They rotated the strike well and picked off the occasional boundary to frustrate a flagging Australia attack. Ramesh has a first-class average of almost 40, with a high score of 300 not out, but his Test mark sits at a disappointing 18 with no half-centuries from 22 previous innings. He played doggedly, striding forward repeatedly to present a firm defence. Australia needed a spark and Starc delivered after taking the second new ball, dismissing Ramesh and Prabath Jayasuriya with consecutive deliveries as Smith claimed his 197th catch to move past Ricky Ponting’s record for Australia.

New Cerny: Rangers pursuing deadline-busting deal for "frightening" star

Glasgow Rangers have officially confirmed that Youssef Chermiti has arrived at Ibrox on a permanent deal to bolster Russell Martin’s options at the top end of the pitch.

Cyriel Dessers’ transfer to Panathinaikos, the team Rangers beat in the Champions League qualifiers earlier this season, has also been officially confirmed by the Scottish Premiership giants.

Chermiti joins Bojan Miovski in arriving at Ibrox to improve the manager’s options in the final third ahead of the rest of the first half of the 2025/26 campaign.

Rangers in pursuit of new winger

The two strikers may not be the only forwards to arrive in Glasgow before the deadline passes later this evening, though, as the club are looking at another attacker.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to RangersReview, Glasgow Rangers maintain an interest in Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi heading into the final hours of the window.

The report mentions the club’s ongoing pursuit of the English forward as part of their round-up ahead of the deadline, following the Dessers and Chermiti announcements.

This means that the Gers are still looking to bolster their attack with a further addition before the window slams shut, with a deadline-busting move for Rak-Sakyi still on the cards.

Why Rangers should sign Rak-Sakyi

Kevin Thelwell must push to get this late deal over the line in the coming hours because he could add a different profile to what Martin currently has at his disposal in the final third, as the club’s new Vaclav Cerny.

The bore-draw with Celtic on Sunday highlighted the lack of diversity out wide for Rangers, as Djeidi Gassama was forced to play on the right wing, unable to do much but go back the way on his right foot when he could not take Kieran Tierney on down the outside.

Last season, Cerny provided something different in the attack as a left-footed forward who could cut in from the right to score and create goals for the team, ending the campaign with 12 goals and four assists in the Premiership, per Sofascore.

As you can see in the table above, Rak-Sakyi offered a threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals in the Championship on loan at Sheffield United, but was not rewarded with the assists that his creativity deserved.

The 22-year-old star, who was described as a “frightening” forward by U23 scout Antonio Mango, scored seven goals and provided two assists in 22 league starts for the Blades, and previously scored 15 goals and assisted eight goals in 40 League One starts for Charlton.

Like Cerny, he is a left-footed right winger who looks to cut in to provide a constant threat in the final third, and his performances in England suggest that he could bring a lot of quality to Ibrox.

Rak-Sakyi could also be another loan signing, as Cerny was with Wolfsburg, and make a big impact in a short time in Glasgow, without the club having to shell out millions on a permanent move, which is another reason why this could be a shrewd piece of business if they can beat the deadline.

Hansi Flick sees 'good news' in brutal Gavi injury blow as Barcelona coach reacts after star midfielder ruled out for five months

Barcelona have been dealt another major blow with Gavi ruled out for five months after undergoing knee surgery, but coach Hansi Flick insists there is 'good news' in the setback as he backed the 21-year-old to return stronger.

Gavi's injury woes continue

Barca have been dealt a huge setback with Gavi ruled out for five months after undergoing surgery on his right knee. The 21-year-old suffered the injury just two weeks into the new season, and his absence is now set to stretch into early 2026. The Spaniard has already endured a long spell on the sidelines after tearing his cruciate ligament in late 2023, forcing him out of the first two months of last season. This time, the meniscus problem in his right knee turned out to be worse than initially feared, leaving Flick without one of his most dynamic midfielders once again.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportFlick sees positives in Gavi’s long layoff

Speaking before Barca’s clash with Oviedo, Flick admitted the blow hurts the team but insisted the diagnosis gives clarity.

"When you receive news like this, you think it’s bad news, but for him personally, it’s good news," he said. "Now we know what to do. He’s 21 years old and has a very long career ahead of him. We have to think about this, to get him 100 percent fit and stay strong.

"He has a huge heart, he's very emotional, I wouldn't say he'd die for this club, but he lives for it. It's not easy for the team because he brings a lot of quality. We'll all help him get back to his best."

Barca boss praises Gavi’s mentality

The Barca boss also spoke about how the youngster is handling the situation mentally, adding: "He has the quality to come back. We need help; he's a professional and we need him. He's a top player. Now, with his second injury, he needs to have a lot of discipline, get back into rhythm… we'll help him, but he knows it will be tough. If anyone can handle this, it's Gavi."

It’s not just Gavi missing. Barca are also without Fermin Lopez, who will be out for around three weeks after suffering an iliopsoas muscle injury in his left leg during Sunday’s 3-0 win over Getafe. The midfielder had only just come off the bench before being forced out at the end. With two key young players sidelined, Flick will now have to lean heavily on Pedri and Frenkie de Jong as Barcelona prepare to face some tough fixtures in the coming weeks.

Lanning, Shafali, Jonassen lead DC to top of WPL table

Delhi Capitals 124 for 1 (Lanning 60*, Shafali 43, Amanjot 1-12) beat Mumbai Indians 123 for 9 (Harmanpreet 22, Matthews 22, Mani 3-17, Jonassen 3-25) by nine wicketsDelhi Capitals (DC) made it 12-1 for chasing teams in WPL 2025 as they beat Mumbai Indians (MI) by nine wickets in Bengaluru. The win, coming with 5.3 overs to spare, also helped DC replace MI at the top of the points table. They now have eight points from six games and MI six from five. After being sent in, MI looked positive at the start but once their openers fell, Jess Jonassen and Minnu Mani ran through the middle order, picking up three wickets each. Each of MI’s top five batters reached double digits but none of them crossed 22. Towards the end, Amanjot Kaur struck an unbeaten 17 off ten balls to push the side to 123 for 9.With DC chasing a well-below-par total, Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning added 85 for the first wicket in 9.5 overs. Shafali fell for 43 off 28 but Lanning carried on. She brought up her second half-century of the season, off 40 balls, and stayed unbeaten on 60 off 49 balls.Jess Jonassen’s three strikes included the key wicket of Harmanpreet Kaur•BCCI

DC apply the brakes on MI’s brisk start

MI were off to a quick start. Both Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews opened their accounts with first-ball fours off Marizanne Kapp. When Jonassen came to bowl the fourth over, Matthews greeted her with two fours off her first two balls. But DC applied the brakes on the scoring rate after that. In the sixth over, bowling around the wicket, Shikha Pandey had Bhatia caught behind for 11. Bhatia’s tally for WPL 2025 now stands at 38 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 84.44.Soon after, Matthews miscued Annabel Sutherland to Shafali Verma at mid-off. DC could have had Harmanpreet Kaur as well, for 1. In the eighth over, she edged Titas Sadhu but the ball flew between the wicketkeeper and slip. At the end of nine overs, MI were 49 for 2.

Jonassen, Mani land decisive punches

In DC’s previous game, Jonassen was named the Player of the Match for her batting. Tonight, she showed why bowling remains her stronger suit. Harmanpreet, having got her eye in, was looking to up the ante. In the tenth over, she muscled Sadhu over wide long-on for a 79m six. Three balls later, she showed her touch game. She moved towards the off side and tapped the length ball to the left of short fine leg for four. But Jonassen cut her innings short on 22, trapping her lbw with an arm ball. MI still had Nat Sciver-Brunt, the leading run-getter this season, in the middle. Before this match, she had three fifties in four innings. For her, Jonassen slowed down the pace and beat her in flight. Sciver-Brunt was early into the shot, ending up chipping it back to the bowler. With another flighted delivery, Jonassen bowled G Kamalini to finish with figures of 3 for 25.Shafali Verma scored 43 off just 28 balls•BCCI

In between, Mani dismissed S Sajana and Amelia Kerr in the space of three balls. Kerr’s wicket was as much Sutherland’s as it was Mani’s. Mani had got Kerr to top-edge a pull. Sutherland, who was at long-on, ran in diagonally to her right and dived full-length to complete the catch inches off the ground. Sanskriti Gupta also fell to Mani, her slog finding Jemimah Rodrigues at deep midwicket.

Lanning, Shafali race away

MI knew they needed early wickets and, therefore, set attacking fields. Lanning, who has not been at her best this season, took advantage and picked up two fours off Shabnim Ismail in the first over of the chase.MI’s plan to bowl short to Shafali also backfired. Sciver-Brunt ended up conceding five wides, and when she got it right, Shafali dispatched her to the boundary. In the fourth over, she hit Sciver-Brunt for two fours and a six in four balls. At the other end, Lanning hit back-to-back fours off Ismail before meting out the same punishment to Matthews in the next over. By the end of the powerplay, DC had raced to 57 for no loss and had brought down the required rate to 4.78.Even after the field restrictions were relaxed, DC did not slow down. In the ninth over, Shafali hit Kerr down the ground for two sixes. Amanjot eventually broke the stand when she had Shafali caught at deep midwicket.By then, though, the contest was over. Lanning and Rodrigues took just 28 balls to knock off the remaining 39 runs.

'This must be a joke!' – Usain Bolt leads Man Utd meltdown as Olympics legend and celebrity Red Devils fan tells Ruben Amorim he 'can't identify one thing we're good at'

Olympics legend Usain Bolt slammed Manchester United's "joke" of a performance in their 3-1 defeat against Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday. The celebrity fan criticised his beloved Red Devils in a match which saw him struggle to identify with "one good thing" as pressure continues to mount on under-fire head coach Ruben Amorim.

  • Thiago scores twice as Brentford down struggling United

After raising hopes of a revival in fortunes following the 2-1 victory over Chelsea last weekend, United slipped back into old habits against Brentford. Amorim’s men found themselves two goals down inside 20 minutes thanks to a brace from Bees striker Igor Thiago. United did respond when Benjamin Sesko scored his first goal for the club following his summer move from RB Leipzig, but a late effort from Mathias Jensen helped Brentford earn all three points in what was a disappointing afternoon for the visitors.

  • Bolt could not hide frustration in series of social media posts

And football fans who were following the match live on social media would have been quick to notice Bolt’s anger throughout proceedings. After Thiago put Brentford two goals to the good at the Gtech Community Stadium, eight-time Olympic gold medalist Bolt was quick to write on X: "This must be a joke."

And after United’s fourth loss in all competitions this season was confirmed, Bolt then wrote in the aftermath: "Can’t Identify one good thing we good at.."

United's loss at Brentford was their fourth defeat of the season

United’s loss at Brentford was yet another setback in what has been a troubling start to the 2025-26 campaign. Amorim’s side have won just two matches so far this term – against both Burnley and Chelsea in the Premier League – while they also drew with Fulham on August 24. United have suffered defeats against Arsenal, Manchester City and Brentford in the league, while they were also eliminated from the Carabao Cup in embarrassing fashion as they fell to a 12-11 penalty shootout loss to League Two outfit Grimsby Town on August 27.

  • Amorim yet to win back-to-back league games as Man Utd boss

The defeat against Brentford has only intensified speculation surrounding Amorim’s future at United. The Portuguese, who replaced Erik ten Hag as manager in November 2024, has won just nine of his 33 league matches since arriving at Old Trafford, while he is also yet to lead his team to back-to-back league wins under his stewardship.

West Ham "could move" for "incredible" £20m England int'l to replace Aguerd

West Ham United “could move” for an “incredible” England international as a replacement for Nayef Aguerd, who may be set for an exit before the transfer deadline.

West Ham eyeing new defender after Aguerd refuses to travel

After spending the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Real Sociedad, Aguerd has come back into the fold this season, starting the opening two Premier League games, during which West Ham conceded a combined eight goals.

However, it is clear the Moroccan has little intention of remaining at the London Stadium for much longer, with the 29-year-old pushing to leave before the deadline, amid interest from the likes of Sunderland, AC Milan and AS Roma.

In fact, the Keinitra-born defender is well-known to have refused to travel to Nottingham Forest for yesterday’s Premier League clash, with the centre-back taking drastic action to try and force through an exit.

However, ExWHUEmployee has now revealed that the club could be hesitant to sanction a departure, should they be unable to find an adequate replacement in time, with Southampton’s Taylor Harwood-Bellis among the potential options.

Southampton's TaylorHarwood-Bellislooks dejected as he applauds fans after the match

The West Ham insider said: “The club have yet to confirm any bid as yet from Marseille or Sunderland and even if they did would have to make a decision as to whether it is worth accepting and whether a replacement could be lined up in time.

“The club have looked at other defenders and one we exclusively revealed at the start of the window and we still have interest in us Charlie Cresswell, ironically he plays in France for Toulouse.

Aguerd upgrade: West Ham plotting late move to sign "excellent" £18m star

Following the signings of Soungoutou Magassa and Mateus Fernandes, West Ham are targeting an “excellent” £18m defender…

1 ByBen Gray Aug 30, 2025 "Incredible" Harwood-Bellis could be solid Aguerd replacement

Although the Saints were relegated without putting up much of a fight last season, the 23-year-old clearly enjoyed a decent campaign on a personal level, having picked up his first cap for England, scoring on his debut against Ireland.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola also singled out his former player for high praise last season, saying: “He’s an incredible threat for Southampton from set pieces and a composer when they have the ball because the manager insists the way they have to play, they have to be close, to move differently.”

With Aguerd clearly eager to leave, West Ham shouldn’t stand in his way, should a deal for Harwood-Bellis be possible, and a move wouldn’t break the bank, with a £20m price tag being touted earlier this summer.

More new signings will only aid Villa’s chances of getting back into the Champions League next season, having missed out last time around, and Arsenal forward Leandro Trossard has been linked with a move to the Midlands.

The Villans have reportedly held talks over a move for Trossard, who could find himself struggling for minutes at the Emirates this season, having to settle for a squad role instead.

Elsewhere, Villa are believed to have contacted Barcelona over the possible availability of right-back Hector Fort, with the 19-year-old’s future in Spain up in the air.

Chelsea striker wants to join Aston Villa

According to Football Insider, Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson has “told friends” that he wants to seal a move to Aston Villa this summer, in a potential big boost for Emery.

The Villans are “in pole position to agree a deal” for the attacker, as he looks to reunite with his former manager after working alongside him at Villarreal.

Jackson may divide opinion, with some thinking he is an underrated player who gets a lot out of those around him, but others feeling he lacks the ruthlessness in front of goal to be a top-quality player, but he could be a shrewd signing for Villa.

The fact that Emery knows the £100,000-a-week Senegalese so well as a player can only be a good thing, meaning he isn’t signing an unknown quantity, and Peter Crouch has heaped praise on the striker in the past.

“I think [he] has been unbelievable. I looked at the stats from last year, and if you take penalties out of it, he’s ahead of Mo Salah. There’s only [Erling] Haaland that’s above him. So many technical players with ability and that have scored a lot of goals, he’s right up there [with them]. He probably needs a little bit more respect.”

It is also easy to forget that Jackson is still only 24 years of age, so he isn’t necessarily the finished product, and he could develop further working with Emery again, proving to be a long-term replacement for Ollie Watkins.

Lyon 'extremely proud' of Kuhnemann's courage

Australia’s two spinners are Nos. 1 and 2 on the wicket charts in the two-Test series

Andrew Fidel Fernando08-Feb-2025Whatever happens on what is likely to be the final day of the series, it is clear that Australia’s spinners have been spectacular in Sri Lanka. So far, the hosts have lost 37 of the 40 wickets they can lose in two Tests. Of those, Australia’s two frontline spinners – Nathan Lyon and Matthew Kuhnemann – have taken 29 wickets.Left-arm Kuhnemann has been especially impressive, taking 16 wickets at an average of 16.50. He was a serious doubt to play any part of this series, having suffered a compound dislocation and fracture in his thumb while playing in the Big Bash League. He has played one of the most definitive roles so far, and Lyon, who is currently on 552 Test wickets, felt Kuhnemann had been Australia’s chief weapon.”Kuhney’s been exceptional, and he deserves all the praise that he actually gets,” Lyon said after the third day’s play in Galle, where Australia need three more wickets to win the series 2-0. “I hope he gets a lot of it, because the way he broke his thumb three weeks ago, and showed the courage to come out here and bowl – I know it’s hurting him, but he’s there, he’s showing a lot of courage, and he’s bowling exceptionally well.Related

“He’s bowling his best ball over and over, and challenging the guy’s defence, and that’s all we can ask. He’s playing his role to his best ability, and I’m extremely proud of him. This is his fifth Test match, is it? For him to take 16 wickets thus far in this series, with a couple still out there, I think he’s been our best bowler.”Lyon, one of Australia’s greatest spinners, has taken 13 wickets and on Saturday became the third Australia bowler – after Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath – to go past 550 wickets. But others have contributed too. Todd Murphy, Travis Head, and Beau Webster, have all taken a wicket apiece in Sri Lanka.”Well, we pride ourselves on improving on our skills – each and every one of us,” Lyon said. “For someone like Travis Head, too – we all know he’s an X Factor player with the bat – to keep putting his finger in the ice and keep doing those breakthroughs is special.”But everyone works hard on their game, and they want to play their role. They want to have an impact for the Australian cricket team, and that’s something that they should be proud of.”It’s been a resounding success in Sri Lanka for Australia’s spinners, and Lyon suggested simplicity was at the heart of what they tried to do on these pitches.”Honestly, we’ve just been talking about sticking to the process of bowling your best ball, and hopefully that will lead to a couple of chances here and there.”
