Ben Sanderson, Gareth Berg share 19 wickets as Northamptonshire thrash Sussex

Sanderson claims 10 for the match and Berg nine as Northants win by an innings and 120 runs

ECB Reporters Network09-May-2021Ben Sanderson and Gareth Berg shared 19 wickets in the match as Northamptonshire quashed Sussex by an innings and 120 runs in the LV= Insurance County Championship. The fast-bowling duo returned match figures of 19 for 189 – with fellow seamer Tom Taylor thwarting the chance for a clean sweep with the victory-confirming scalp.Veteran Berg, 40, claimed career-best figures of 9 for 90, while Sanderson celebrated 10 for 99, with five-wicket hauls in both innings.Northants, who atoned for their heart-breaking one-run defeat to Yorkshire a week ago, moved to their second victory of the season to keep their Division One hopes alive – taking 24 points to Sussex’s three. After the third day had been washed out at Wantage Road, Northants needed six wickets to secure back-to-back home wins in the Championship – with humid air and grey skies handing them perfect conditions.Sanderson, who had shared 10 for 46 with Berg in the first innings, didn’t need a loosener as he struck with his first ball of the morning.Stiaan van Zyl had been at ease for his 71 runs on a sun-kissed second evening, but having added a single against Berg, he chased Sanderson outside his off stump with a slight nip away enough to catch an edge to first slip.It ended a partnership of 91 with Ben Brown, comfortably Sussex’s highest stand of the match.Gareth Berg also picked up where he left off after taking five-for in Sussex’s first innings•Getty ImagesBerg evened up the share of wickets with Sanderson again when Delray Rawlins bagged a pair – the allrounder struggling to commit with Berg coming around the wicket with a bit of swing to edge behind. In his next over, the former Middlesex and Hampshire man produced significant in-swing to pin Brown leg-before for 39.Northants were forced to wait 31 balls before Sanderson challenged Stuart Meaker’s outside edge and found a tickle through to Adam Rossington.Ollie Robinson, on the back of an unbeaten 49 and a five-for in the first innings, seemed imperious to the moving ball as he scored a free-flowing 23.But he fell lbw to a nip-backer from Sanderson – the ex-Yorkshire seamer claiming the 15th five-for of his first-class career. The win was wrapped up when Taylor castled Jack Carson, as Sussex lost their last six wickets for 61 runs in 123 morning deliveries. It meant Northants claimed their first victory by an innings since April 2017, and Sussex’s winless run at Wantage Road was extended to 12 games, with their last success coming in 1994.

Ed Smith's tenure ends as national selector as role is made redundant

Chris Silverwood assumes responsibility with Joe Root and Eoin Morgan alongside him

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Apr-2021Ed Smith is to leave the ECB with almost immediate effect after his role was made redundant.Smith, who was appointed as national selector three years ago to the day, has been squeezed out after a restructure of the selection process by Ashley Giles, the managing director of England’s men’s cricket.Under the new structure, the head coach, Chris Silverwood, will have responsibility for squad selections. He and the team captains, Joe Root in Test cricket and Eoin Morgan in the limited-overs formats, will then decide on the final XI together. How Silverwood can combine his role as coach and selector remains to be seen. England’s relentless schedule provides him with little time to watch county or pathway cricket, though the ECB have previously said he may not need to be with the senior sides at all times. He will, however, have some assistance. James Taylor keeps his job, though its title will change from ‘England selector’ to ‘head scout’, while Mo Bobat, the performance director, will also provide input. Information from performance analysis and scouting is likely to become more important.”I would like to personally thank Ed for his contribution to the England men’s teams over the past three years,” Giles said. “Ed’s input has helped deliver successes for all our England Teams, and he has worked with commitment and professionalism throughout his time as National Selector. I wish him well in his future endeavours.”The new structure also makes lines of accountability much clearer, with Chris Silverwood, as Head Coach, taking ultimate responsibility for picking England senior men’s squads.”On the face of things, Smith is the victim of a restructuring that no longer has the necessity for his role. It may be relevant, however, that the relationship between Smith and some within the England set-up has been on the wane for some time. Some felt he attempted to interfere in team (rather than squad) selection, which has traditionally been the preserve of the captain and coach. Several players were understood to have taken a personal dislike to him.It may be that the turning point for Smith’s tenure came in the Barbados Test of January 2019 when Stuart Broad was left out for Sam Curran and England lost heavily. Some felt Smith has exerted a surprising amount of pressure over the final selection.Related

Rest and rotation will be 'crucial' for England claims selector Smith

'No doors are closed,' says Smith after Bairstow, Moeen omissions

There have been successes under Smith’s watch. Jos Buttler’s return to the Test team has, in general, been well received, while his willingness to back young players such as Curran and Dom Bess has refreshed the England side. Negatives include picking Jason Roy as an opener for the Ashes, asking Ollie Pope to bat at No. 4 in his first incarnation in the team and the apparent shunning of Moeen Ali.”It has been a huge privilege to work with great people trying to help England cricket and I am excited about watching England’s continued development,” Smith said. “I’ve been very lucky to work with James Taylor, and I’m delighted that he will remain part of the new structure. My thanks to the dedicated team of scouts and to all the coaches, data analysts, medics and members of the ECB Pathway, who are available every day of the year at all hours to help England’s decision-makers.”England’s two captains, Joe and Eoin, have already completed remarkable achievements in an England shirt. England has two men dedicated to playing cricket in a way that makes the country proud. The role of National Selector has been enjoyable and rewarding, and that is significantly due to my interaction with all of the England players.”At such a high point for England cricket, I wish Ashley Giles, the coaches and all support staff good fortune over the coming months. I know how hard Ashley and his team work for England cricket. In particular, I’d like to wish Chris Silverwood good luck and every success going forward.”

Rizwan, bowlers star in Multan Sultans' victory as chasing streak continues

Hafeez’s 27-ball half-century in vain for Lahore Qalandars

Danyal Rasool26-Feb-2021

Mohammad Rizwan extended his rich form, bringing up his fifth fifty-plus score in his last seven T20 innings•PCB/PSL

With the state of a world at the moment, almost everyone craves a return to the way things were a couple of years ago. Watching Lahore Qalandars in the PSL on Friday, you might as well have been transported there for three hours after Multan Sultan walloped them by seven wickets with nearly four overs to spare, ending their perfect start to this season. It was a performance of overwhelming dominance from the increasingly irrepressible Mohammad Rizwan whose 49-ball 76 made light work of a chase of 157.The win was set up by the bowlers right at the start of the match after the Sultans won the toss and – guess what – decided to bowl. With Lahore opener Sohail Akhtar struggling for fluency, Sohail Khan and Shahnawaz Dhani’s plan to cramp Fakhar Zaman for room worked like a charm, stifling him before bringing the wicket. By the time the powerplay was done, the Qalandars had managed just 25, their lowest six-over total in PSL history. It was only Mohammad Hafeez, perhaps the only Pakistan batsman to match Rizwan for form at the moment, who propelled Lahore to a respectable total. He began by clobbering a six back over bowler Shahid Afridi’s head, who had a difficult day today.Hafeez went from strength to strength, bringing up his half-century of 27 balls, but a mix-up with Samit Patel led to his first dismissal of the tournament. There was no one to take over the mantle from him, and the Qalandars’ innings began to splutter from that moment. Joe Denly, Ben Dunk and Patel all failed to get their side to the sort of total that would challenge the Sultans, and while the early wickets of Chris Lynn and James Vince gave the Qalandars hope, it was only flickering.Star of the day
With the Sultans lacking a premium fast-bowling asset, Carlos Brathwaite has proven himself surprisingly useful, particularly in the first half of the innings. He was introduced as early as the fourth over today, and with his exotic mix of pace, angles, and length, kicked things off with a wicket maiden. Even Hafeez struggled to really get a hold of the West Indian, while Joe Denly often took several deliveries simply to get off strike against him. When he came on in the 14th over to bowl his final over, he broke an 89-run third-wicket partnership that looked to have set up the Qalandars for the finish, drawing Denly wide outside off stump to get him nicking off. It wasn’t bowling to set the heart racing, but Brathwaite’s intelligence did at least as much for the Sultans’ chances as Rizwan’s belligerence in the second half.Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez share a joke•PCB/PSL

Miss of the day
The Qalandars weren’t just ordinary with bat and ball today, but also in the field. Zaman’s struggles up top might have caught the headlines for how heavily the side relies on him, but it wasn’t the only department he was found wanting. There were two chances to put an end to the 110-run partnership between Sohaib Maqsood and Rizwan, with each of them allowed a reprieve by Zaman in the deep. When Maqsood sliced one to him, he opted for the safety of collecting it on the bounce, while Rizwan’s chance spooned straight into his hands and back out again a few overs later. It was a day Zaman will want to put out of his mind, and on that point, he’ll find the rest of his side in agreement.Honourable mention
Despite the Qalandars having little to smile about, there was still the obligatory moment of magic that Shaheen Afridi would conjure up, almost like it’s been written into his contract. In his first over, he had the out-of-form Chris Lynn facing up to him, a contest that would end by knockout in two balls. Lynn kept out the first one, an inswinging yorker, before being hopelessly outfoxed by a dream of a follow-up. Landing on middle a foot from the base of the stumps, it seamed ever so slightly towards off and away from the bat Lynn hopelessly brought down to fend it off. It would crash into off stump to create that most elegant spectacle, a cartwheeling off stump after an impact to its base, with a flummoxed batsman frozen just in front of it.Afridi followed it up with another wicket in the 15th over, though the one that removed Rizwan was more of a formality after the game was done. It produced one of the cosier moments of the game, with the 20-year old walking up to the man eight years his senior and giving him a pat on the head to acknowledge his efforts.

WTC 'extremely significant' for West Indies, says Phil Simmons

Head coach says T20I series defeat will not affect their Test preparations

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Dec-2020Head coach Phil Simmons has described the World Test Championship (WTC) as “extremely significant” for West Indies in the lead-up to the first game against New Zealand at Seddon Park. West Indies are currently third from bottom on the WTC standings with a solitary win from five matches. In their most recent Test series in England, they lost 2-1 after winning the series-opener in Southampton.”It’s extremely significant,” Simmons said of the WTC. “I think it’s a format that we haven’t done well for in a long time and we’re trying to get ourselves back into the higher ends of the table where Test cricket is concerned and because of that initially we want to do that in the Test Championship but at the same time we want to be winners in Test cricket itself. So, it’s important for us.”Simmons reckoned that the 2-0 loss in the T20I series, which ended on Monday, would not impact the team’s preparations and performances in the upcoming Test series. Members of the Test squad have already had two workouts against New Zealand A in Queenstown last month.ALSO READ: Darren Bravo hopes overseas comforts spark return to Test formWhile Darren Bravo made a century in the first tour game, it was Kraigg Brathwaite who led the visitors’ batting in the second with a career-best 246, spending over nine hours in the middle. Bravo fell seven short of another hundred in the second fixture. West Indies Test captain Jason Holder also came out of quarantine, scoring 24 and picking up 1 for 45.”The T20s and Tests are different,” Simmons said. “The Test team has done well in Queenstown and have enjoyed a tough four-day game and they are now coming into the Test series with some confidence especially the batsmen who haven’t had that for a while. So, I think the Test team is in a good place. Disappointed with the T20s, but moving onto the Test series now.”I think it was a good thing we had to do 14 days [of quarantine] in which we practiced and then we had a three-day and four-day game. Some of the young players who haven’t been here have gotten a little bit accustomed to Test-cricket conditions here which, I think, is going to be similar from where we were to here. I think they will offer a lot of mental strength having gone through the period that we went through there. We are going to push hard for them to put up the score they put up in the last four-day game.”So what are West Indies looking to take out of the Test series against New Zealand, who are formidable in their home conditions?”Your aim is always to do well,” Simmons said. Your aim is always to win cricket matches and I think that’s our aim in both the A team and CWI XI games and Test matches. Our aim is to play cricket so that we can win each game.”

Man Utd now considering offering nearly £1m total package for 18 y/o gem

With plenty fo work needed this summer, Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention towards Scotland and potentially sealing a deal for a future star.

Man Utd transfer news

Even though Erik ten Hag's future is still in doubt, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Manchester United have still pushed on in the transfer market as they look to finally put an end to an era to forget at Old Trafford. This has already seen several transfer links emerge too, including for the likes of Antonio Silva and Ousmane Diomande in the hope of replacing the departing Raphael Varane.

The Frenchman confirmed his exit at the end of the season, before finishing in style by winning the FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City. Now in search of a replacement, it's no surprise that United have focused their search on younger players rather than those more experienced, given that Harry Maguire is 31 years old and Jonny Evans is 36 years old, highlighting the need for a defensive revamp at Old Trafford. But it's not just the defence getting a fresh coat of paint.

Ratcliffe can forget Olise as Man Utd eye "incredible" £51m Palmer clone

The Man Utd target is also being chased by Manchester City.

ByTom Lever Jun 1, 2024

According to the Daily Record, Manchester United are considering a move to sign Daniel Kelly from Celtic in a package that would cost close to £1m this summer. The teenager is yet to agree a new deal with the Bhoys, with Premier League clubs reportedly willing to offer Kelly a higher £9,000-a-week deal (£468k per year), whilst paying a £490k training compensation to Celtic.

With the Scottish champions unwilling to match the financial power of United and Tottenham Hotspur, but Kelly keen to stay put at his boyhood club, the young Scot finds himself at a difficult crossroads. Outside of the Premier League, Bologna, Bayer Leverkusen and Cesc Fabregas' Como are also reportedly interested too, creating quite the race for Kelly's signature into the final six months of his Celtic contract.

"Incredible" Kelly represents wise Man Utd plan

It's been easy to take aim at manchester United's recent transfer history, which has seen big names arrive past their best before watching a predictable drop-off take place. Old Trafford saw that drop-off happen with Casemiro this season and arguably saw it happen to Cristiano Ronaldo in the season prior, before he left for Saudi Arabia. It's the type of transfer failure that Ratcliffe plans on ending it seems, with targeting Kelly a part of that.

The young midfielder earned the praise of Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers this season, as he made a total of six first-team appearances in which he even managed one goal.

Rodgers told CelticTV, via 67hailhail: “Brilliant for young Daniel Kelly. It’s so nice when you get a homegrown player. The young kid has been here since he was eight years of age. I’ve seen him in preseason and I really like what he has.

“He’s got good physicality. He’s got an incredible attitude for a young player, and it was just about timing for him and to give the chance. A great time for him to come in and a really good goal.”

Two Lightning players self-isolating after breaching Covid-19 guidelines

Unidentified players will self-isolate for two weeks, missing three Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy fixtures

Matt Roller07-Sep-2020Two players representing Lightning in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy are self-isolating after breaching Covid-19 guidelines. The ECB has confirmed a report on the CricketHER website that both players were made unavailable for selection for Lightning’s last game against Northern Diamonds, which they lost by two wickets. The players have been told to self-isolate for two weeks, a stricter sanction than the one imposed by Kent on Jordan Cox, the 19-year-old batsman who breached protocols by agreeing to have his photo taken with a fan.It is understood that clubs have been given discretion on how they handle breaches, with certain minimum standards imposed. Lightning have opted to exceed those minimum standards to mitigate the risks of transmission, though the exact nature of the breach remains unclear.Lightning are currently winless after three games of the tournament. They will be without the self-isolating players during their next two fixtures, against Central Sparks on Friday and Thunder on Sunday, though are likely to have them available again for their final group game. The news follows the abandonment on Sunday of Northamptonshire’s Bob Willis Trophy match against Gloucestershire, after a non-playing Northants squad member tested positive for Covid-19.The ECB will confirm later this week whether Friday’s T20 Blast game between the two teams will go ahead as planned, depending in part on what contact the player involved had with team-mates before his positive test. The player who tested positive has not been part of Northants’ T20 campaign so far, and did not travel with the squad to Bristol. The ECB and the club are working through the relevant medical protocols, and as things stand, the fixture is still expected to be played.

Arsenal hit the jackpot with a "warrior" who’s now worth 2x more than Son

While an Arsenal fan's opinion of Tottenham Hotspur is often not very pleasant – to put it mildly – just a week ago, Gooners everywhere were tuning in and praying for the Lilywhites to take points off Manchester City.

On the other hand, you had a significant portion of Spurs faithful hoping for the exact opposite and club captain Son Heung-min must've felt that permeating from the stands, as in the 85th minute, with the scores level, he completely fluffed his lines in a one-v-one with Stefan Ortega.

So, by making a mistake, the South Korean was able to once again rain on the Gunners' Premier League parade, although at least the red side of North London can hold on to the fact that their first-choice right-back, Ben White, is worth twice as much as their new number one enemy – now that's parade-worthy.

Ben White's Arsenal career

Arsenal signed White from fellow Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion in July 2021 and were immediately criticised for spending around £50m on a player with just a single season of top-flight experience.

Former Chelsea and Arsenal defender William Gallas – the fount of reasonable takes – claimed it was "difficult" to understand why Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar signed off on the deal, questioning whether the Spanish manager and Brazilian sporting director did it "because Ben White is English."

Amidst the confusion surrounding his transfer, the Poole-born "warrior", as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, put together a strong first campaign under Arteta, making 37 appearances – mostly at centre-back – and helping the team finish higher than eighth for the first time in two years.

ben-white-arsenal-james-sweet-academy

The following season saw the Englishman move to right-back to make way for the arrival of William Saliba, and while detractors such as Gabby Agbonlahor claimed the Arsenal man would "get found out playing right-back," he has gone on to become even more important to the side.

In all, the 26-year-old has started 87 games for Arteta on the right side of the defence, in which he has scored five goals, provided ten assists and won two Player of the Month awards at the club.

Ultimately, while there was once an element of doubt as to where the £50m man would play – if at all – in the team, he has since gone on to become one of the first names on the teamsheet, perhaps behind only Bukayo Saka, Saliba, and Declan Rice, and his recent valuation reflects that fact.

Ben White's valuation in 2024

This new price tag also means that Arsenal's number four is now the joint-second most valuable full-back in London alongside Spurs' Pedro Porro and just behind their exciting young left-back Destiny Udogie.

However, the former Seagulls ace is now worth twice as much as the man who broke Arsenal hearts last week, Son, whom the CIES price at just €30m, or about £26m.

Now, this isn't down to a lack of quality, as in his 36 games this season, the Chuncheon-born star scored 17 goals and provided ten assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.33 games.

Instead, it's most likely due to the fact that his current £190k-per-week contract expires next June and that he is turning 32 this summer.

Of course, players can play at the top level well into their 30s these days, but the fact is that there often is a drop off in output once they are sufficiently past their prime, which, according to research done by The Athletic, is around 26 years old for wingers.

At the end of the day, the former Tottenham captain is still a very effective player, but the fact he's worth only half as much as Arsenal's number one right-back might just help Gooners everywhere cope with the fact that he wasn't quite effective enough the one time they needed him to be.
