India's T20 World Cup squad: Pant, Dube and Samson make the cut

Rishabh Pant, Shivam Dube and Sanju Samson have all been selected in India’s 15-man squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup starting on June 1 in the USA and the West Indies. The squad, announced on Tuesday afternoon, will be led by Rohit Sharma and has Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain.Yuzvendra Chahal, who was not part of India’s recent T20I squads for the series in South Africa and at home against Afghanistan in January, has been picked on the back of his IPL form and is one of four spin options, along with left-arm wristspinner Kuldeep Yadav, and left-arm spin-bowling allrounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. The pace attack comprises only three specialists – Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh – along with Hardik and Dube as seam-bowling options.Related

Yashasvi Jaiswal was preferred as Rohit’s opening partner, while Shubman Gill was named as a reserve player along with lower-order batter Rinku Singh and fast bowlers Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan.Pant hasn’t played a T20I since his car accident in December 2022, and has worked his way back into the squad through his performances in IPL 2024. His 398 runs in 11 innings have come at a strike rate of 158.56. Over the course of the season, he has also allayed any doubts there may have been over his wicketkeeping. This is Samson’s first selection in a World Cup squad, after he missed out to Dinesh Karthik in 2022. Like Pant, Samson has been in prolific form as captain of Rajasthan Royals, who are on top of the IPL 2024 league table with eight wins in nine games. He has scored 385 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 161.08 so far. The inclusion of Pant and Samson left no room for KL Rahul or Jitesh Sharma. While Rahul has not played a T20I since the previous World Cup, Jitesh had been part of India’s recent T20I squads, but he’s been in poor form this IPL.Eight of the 15 players selected, including captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, featured in India’s 2022 T20 World Cup campaign. After their semi-final defeat to England then, the BCCI made sweeping changes in a bid to experiment with younger players. However, Rohit and Kohli returned to the T20I squad after more than a year’s absence ahead of the Afghanistan series at home in January.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

That series also marked an international return for Dube, who top-scored with 124 runs in three innings. His ability to take down spin in the middle overs for Chennai Super Kings over the past two IPL seasons, and his improvement against fast bowling in 2024, made him a compelling selection. Dube’s inclusion meant Rinku, India’s designated T20I finisher over the last eight months, couldn’t make the 15.Prior to Rohit’s return to the T20I team in January, India had mostly been captained by Hardik since the 2022 T20 World Cup, while Suryakumar Yadav stood in after Hardik injured his ankle during the ODI World Cup last October-November. Suryakumar led India in the five-match T20I series at home against Australia in November and in the three games in South Africa in December. The upcoming World Cup will be his first T20I since then, following his comeback in the IPL from an ankle injury and sports hernia.Chahal also played his most recent T20I eight months ago and could finally get to play his first T20 World Cup match after playing 80 T20Is over the years. Rahul Chahar was preferred over him in 2021, and in 2022, R Ashwin and Axar Patel featured in India’s XI regularly even as Chahal sat out. He has so far picked up 13 wickets in nine games in IPL 2024, with an economy of 9.00 despite bowling in the death overs. The squad will leave India for the USA in batches, with the first one leaving on May 21. This travelling group will have head coach Rahul Dravid and other members of the coaching staff, and squad members from the IPL 2024 teams that are out of the playoffs. The last day of league-stage matches in IPL 2024 is May 19, and the playoffs begin on May 21 before the tournament finishes on May 26.India begin their World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5 in New York, and then play Pakistan, USA and Canada on June 9, 12 and 15.

Imran Khan sentenced to 14 years in prison in 'Toshakhana' case

His conviction and sentencing comes a day after he was sentenced for ten years on a separate charge

Danyal Rasool31-Jan-2024Former Pakistan prime minister and 1992 ODI World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison. The case, known in Pakistan as the Toshakhana reference, has to do with selling gifts he was given in his capacity as prime minister without declaring proceeds for tax purposes. His wife Bushra Bibi, too, was convicted and sentenced to a 14-year prison term.Imran has also been fined PKR 787 million (US$2.9m approx.). While he was already banned from running for any political office for five years, it has now been extended to ten years. The conviction and sentencing came a day after Imran was sentenced to ten years in jail on a separate charge – he was already serving a three-year prison term since last August. While that sentence, which also related to selling state gifts in what the court ruled were corrupt practices, was later suspended, Imran was not released from prison. His current 14-year sentence will run concurrently with his ten-year term, as is the standard practice in Pakistan. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), the party Imran founded and led to power in Pakistan’s most recent general elections, said the proceedings “exposed a complete disregard of law by a trial court”, and that “such a sham trial belonged to the dustbin”.Imran’s legal troubles have only snowballed since he was removed as prime minister after a no-confidence vote in April 2022, with over a hundred cases registered against him. However, this is the first time the legal system has also sentenced his wife to a jail term. Unlike Imran, she had not been incarcerated earlier. The sentences in the past 24 hours have come amid a state crackdown against Imran Khan•AFP/Getty ImagesTheir sentencing came amid a state crackdown against Imran. With general elections due in Pakistan in eight days, the PTI has been banned from contesting altogether. Political rallies organised by them have been dispersed and shut down by authorities. A rally in Karachi earlier this week was halted by police, who fired tear gas and detained dozens of PTI workers. For months, there was a de facto ban on mentioning Imran’s name on Pakistani TV.In the past few months, when the PTI attempted to host virtual or online fundraisers, there were nationwide internet blackouts that coincided with the timing of the events. Authorities, however, have claimed the two were unrelated. The International Federation for Human Rights, in a statement after the ten-year sentence was announced on Tuesday, said its findings revealed “a disturbing disregard for the basic principles of justice and due process” after he was denied access to his chosen counsel, which they termed “a flagrant violation of rights enshrined in international law”.Opinion polling in the lead-up to the elections has been non-existent, but the most recent independent polls have shown Imran to be the most popular politician in the country. When he was arrested by paramilitary security forces in May 2023, violent uprisings took place throughout the country that led to an internet blackout that lasted several days; thousands of his political supporters were also arrested at the time. There was no immediate statement from Imran or his lawyers following the sentence, though they are expected to appeal.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Bavarians are said to open to selling the French international if they receive a satisfactory offer, though it's unclear how Leroy Sane's recent departure to Galatasaray might impact the club’s stance. Coman has been with Bayern since 2015, racking up 339 appearances, 72 goals, and 71 assists. Despite his contributions, he’s been seen as transferable, especially with the club chasing new attacking talent like Liverpool’s Luis Diaz.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

The 29-year-old, who scored the winning goal in the 2020 Champions League final, has won league titles in France, Italy, and Germany. Last year, a move to Saudi Arabia collapsed due to his own refusal. Arsenal and other Premier League clubs have been closely monitoring his situation. Under Vincent Kompany, Coman started four of Bayern’s five Club World Cup matches, including the 2-0 quarter-final defeat against his former club Paris Saint-Germain.

Fenerbahce must decide whether to push for a loan or full transfer, depending on Die Roten’s final asking price and squad plans. Bayern’s pursuit of a new winger and their view on Coman's fitness will likely influence the decision.

Dawson's five-wicket haul delays Surrey's title confirmation

Hampshire star’s 5 for 44 keeps visitors waiting in quest to squash last contenders Essex

ECB Reporters Network27-Sep-2023Liam Dawson moved to 45 LV= Insurance County Championship wickets with his fourth five-wicket haul of the season to delay Surrey’s title confirmation.Left-arm spinner Dawson has had his best batting season since 2015 and best-ever bowling campaign as his 5 for 44 kept Surrey waiting in their quest to squash last contenders Essex.Sai Sudharsan had led Surrey’s batting with an exceptional 73 before Jordan Clark came in and struck 50 not out.Surrey were eventually bowled out for 207, 93 runs short of winning the crown, and a 12-run deficit to Hampshire, which was increased by one in a truncated 20 balls before bad light ended proceedings for the day.Surrey needed to get to 300 in 110 overs to make sure they claimed the bonus points required to be confirmed champions for a second year in a row. They began the day on 47 for 2, replying to Hampshire’s 219, and by the time Ryan Patel had hoicked to deep midwicket off Dawson, they had only added 13 more runs in 53 minutes. It would be Patel’s last action of the match as Jamie Smith will come in for him for the third innings of the match.Getting to that 300 mark quickly was clearly not the priority – with winning the match and lifting the trophy on a high prominently mentioned by Tom Lawes the previous evening.Hampshire’s tidy bowling didn’t help the run rate, neither did Ben Foakes taking 36 balls to get off the mark and even then, it was only a misfield that helped him move from a blob. He never would look comfortable at the crease, although was perhaps unlucky to be given out lbw going back to Dawson.Sudharsan was by no means lucid in his batting, but his classical style was pleasant on the eyes and accumulated runs at a workmanlike tempo.Sai Sudharsan sets off for a run•Steve Paston/PA Photos/Getty ImagesThe 21-year-old is one to watch in world cricket having struck a stunning 96 in the IPL final early this year, to go with two centuries in nine previous first-class matches. His defence was solid, but his coup de gras was his varied shot-making, with proficiency shown on the drive, sweep and wristiness.Sudharsan reached his maiden Championship fifty in exactly 100 balls. He had been joined by Will Jacks – who had replaced five-wicket haul celebrator Lawes after returning from England duty – and the rate of scoring increased for a short period.Jacks twice took on Ian Holland’s medium pace and twice dispatched the ball over the ropes, which helped the morning scoring to 67 runs.Sudharsan was the victim of big bounce out of the footholds from Dawson, as the Indian gloved to short leg, with Jacks leg before to James Fuller in the following over.Dawson picked up his fourth when Cam Steel was lbw and Holland bowled a swinging Jamie Overton.Clark belligerently scored a 75-ball half-century, his 21st in first-class cricket, as he put in 32 with Kemar Roach before the West Indian was caught at first slip with the second new ball.Clark also scored all 15 runs with Dan Worrall at the other end, before the Australian-born seamer was bowled by Dawson – his 17th wicket in September.Surrey’s failure to reach 300 is not a huge problem in their pursuit of glory. Essex are stuttering against Northamptonshire and if they don’t reach 400, Surrey will automatically be champions.Despite 18 overs still remaining, only 20 balls were bowled and a single run scored as bad light prevented Hampshire from really getting their second innings moving under lights.

Both players have been linked with a move to north London themselves, but it is believed Thomas Frank wants to reunite with the impressive Mbeumo. Semenyo and Eze impressed in the 2024/25 season, respectively logging 16 goal contributions in the Premier League.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Mbeumo remains the prized asset however. A recent analysis of xG performance revealed Mbeumo was the most efficient goalscorer in last season's Premier League. The Cameroonian bagged 20 goals, on just 12.3 xG.

Forget Rice: Arsenal star just proved why he's their "future captain"

As Arsenal welcomed PSV Eindhoven to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening, there was a real fear that this would be a non-event.

A week ago, Mikel Arteta’s men secured perhaps the best victory of his managerial career to date, winning 7-1 in the Netherlands.

So, with the Gunners’ passage through the last eight all but confirmed, it meant that a number of tickets went unsold. It also meant that Arteta was able to ring the changes in North London.

He did so to mixed effect. Arsenal could only draw 2-2 with PSV, made to bemoan some lax defending from stand-in defender Jakub Kiwior and a lack of fitness from Ben White.

That said, despite a pretty unexciting clash in Europe, there were some positives for the coaching staff to take away.

The biggest positives from Arsenal's draw with PSV

The hard work had already been done last week. There was no real need to try this time around.

However, to the squad’s credit, they kept their motivation levels high on Wednesday evening. The best player on the park was, rather incredibly, Raheem Sterling.

The Premier League icon has had a troublesome campaign at Arsenal, moving on loan from Chelsea last summer. Since then, he’s only scored once, but this was perhaps his finest outing in the famous red and white.

Sterling did not score, he should have, notably in the first half. Sent clean through on goal, he was denied by Walter Benitez in the PSV net.

That said, he did come up with assists for both goals, setting up Oleksandr Zinchenko – another stand-out figure on the night – for his rasping drive.

Truth be told, the loanee did not do much for that goal but he certainly did for Declan Rice’s header. So often fans have bemoaned the England star’s poor decision-making this term but there was nothing poor about the second assist.

He stretched the visitors’ defence, ran beyond his marker and got to the byline before pulling the ball back on a plate for Rice to find the net.

As a result, he was handed the official Player of the Match award by UEFA. Zinchenko certainly deserved to be in with a shout of winning it too.

So often ignored by Arteta in a midfield role, it was in Martin Odegaard’s position that the Ukrainian shone in midweek, standing in for the Arsenal skipper and staking his claim for more minutes.

So, it was a good night for Arsenal’s experienced players, but was it a good night for the younger lads? Myles Lewis-Skelly deserves another shoutout.

Myles Lewis-Skelly's performance in numbers

The 18-year-old’s Arsenal career has already been a total rollercoaster. From scoring against Manchester City and famously copying Erling Haaland’s celebration to red cards against Wolves and West Ham, the teen still has much to learn.

Ill-disciplined yes, but this is a player when you remove red cards from the equation, has looked like he’s been playing at the top level for years, not just a few months.

As a consequence, it would not be a surprise to see him named in Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad on Friday.

Bursting onto the scene this campaign, Lewis-Skelly has been nothing short of a sensation and deserves just as much praise as fellow Hale Ender, Ethan Nwaneri.

He’s cool in possession, immense at evading the press and can play brilliant passes between the lines. We saw all of that in the second leg against PSV, first at left-back and then in central midfield when Riccarco Calafiori replaced Rice.

There were two notable moments, one when he struck the post and then the piece of play above, linking up brilliantly with Calafiori on the edge of the box.

Performance in Numbers

Want data and stats? Football FanCast’s Performance in Numbers series provides you with the latest match analysis from across Europe.

Lewis-Skelly is a midfielder by trade and it would not be a surprise to see his future in that role. Speaking of the youngster’s future, he could well be a future skipper in the making.

Speaking this week, Jack Wilshere – a player of a similar mould – noted that “Myles is very team-oriented, he’s more of a natural leader and wants to bring everyone with him.”

TNT Sports commentator Adam Somerton also picked up on that attribute during the game, suggesting that he could be “Arsenal’s captain of the future”. Fine praise indeed.

He certainly led by example on the pitch as the Gunners cruised through to the next round, notably winning every single duel and completing 94% of his passes, subsequently earning a 7/10 match rating courtesy of GOAL.

Is there anything this boy cannot do? It seems not. Arsenal have found a superstar in the making and he’s one of their very own.

Every Premier League player out of contract in 2025

With the January transfer window now shut, attention is now already turning to the summer window, and some clubs are still nervously sweating on the futures of some of their stars.

That comes with a slew of Premier League stars set to see their current contracts expire at the end of the current campaign, with 19 of the 20 clubs set to lose at least one player as a free agent as things stand and some clubs losing as many as eight members of their first-team squad.

Though there is still time for that to change in the months ahead, a massive 78 players across the top flight are set to walk away for absolutely nothing in June 2025 as it stands. Below, we’ve broken down each club’s current situation.

Arsenal 3 players

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are set to lose three players at the end of the season unless they take action in the coming months.

Kieran Tierney is set to finally end his torrid spell in north London, and has even reportedly agreed a return to Celtic, while Italian midfielder Jorginho is also out of contract and has been linked with a move to Flamengo when his deal expires.

Of their strongest first XI, they could also be waving goodbye to Thomas Partey as things stand, with the Ghanaian’s deal also coming to an end, though there is still time to change that.

Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth are the only side across the entire top flight without players set to be out of contract this summer, though they will lose Kepa Arrizabalaga as he returns to Chelsea from his loan spell at the Vitality Stadium.

The south-coast outfit are still likely to be busy in the summer, though, with their impressive form having caught the eye of plenty of clubs, with the likes of Milos Kerkez, Dean Huijsen and Antoine Semenyo all being linked with Europe’s elite in recent months, leaving the Cherries with a headache of a different nature as they juggle their own ambitions with potential significant windfalls.

Brentford 3 players

Thomas Frank set to lose two of his Brentford veterans as things stand. 35-year-old centre-back Ben Mee is out of contract at the end of the season, but has been largely phased out of the squad this term, making just six appearances in the top flight.

The same cannot be said for Christian Norgaard, who has been a key man for the Bees this season, but whose deal expires this summer. Though there is thought to be an option for a further year included, it has not yet been activated, and as it stands, the Dane will be seeking a new challenge away from the Gtech.

Also set to be a free agent is Josh Dasilva, who has not featured this season after undergoing knee surgery, and whose deal also includes the option of a further year yet to be exercised.

Brighton & Hove Albion 4 players

Andy Robertson challenges Tariq Lamptey

Tariq Lamptey leads four players set to depart Brighton this summer for nothing, with the young defender having struggled for game time under Fabian Hurzeler and his time on the south coast having been plagued by injury.

Also set to leave, and perhaps retire, is 39-year-old midfielder James Milner, who has struggled with a thigh injury all season and whose short-term deal will expire at the end of the season. Goalkeeper Tom McGill, who spent the first half of the campaign at MK Dons, is also set to become a free agent.

More concerningly for the Seagulls is that Joel Veltman’s contract is also up, with the Dutchman having been a key figure at full-back in recent seasons and making 18 appearances already this campaign. He is one that they will certainly need to renew or replace adequately.

Chelsea 1 player

Given Chelsea’s recent habit of offering extremely long contracts for most players they sign, it is probably little surprise to know that only Lucas Bergstrom is set to leave for nothing at the end of the current campaign.

The 22-year-old shot-stopper has spent this season at Stamford Bridge, but is well down the pecking order, and with both Mike Penders and Djordje Petrovic set to arrive back in west London, his future is clearly away from the Blues.

CrystalPalace's WillHughesreacts

It is going to be a busy summer at Selhurst Park. While all the focus has been on Marc Guehi, whose contract expires in 2026, Crystal Palace are set to lose six players for nothing this summer.

There remains uncertainty over Tyrick Mitchell, with some suggestions that he has already penned a new contract beyond 2025, but they are certainly on course to lose Will Hughes, who has been a key man for Oliver Glasner amid injuries to his first-choice midfielders.

Meanwhile, long-standing servants Nathaniel Clyne and Joel Ward are both set to leave, with the pair having seen their roles reduced significantly this season.

Elsewhere, veteran goalkeeper Remi Matthews will see his deal expire, and talented 20-year-old winger Franco Umeh-Chibueze is also set to become a free agent.

Everton 8 players

Everton's DominicCalvert-Lewincelebrates their third goal, an own goal scored by Tottenham Hotspur's Archie Gray

As if Everton didn’t have enough on their plate with financial struggles and the move to a new stadium, they are also set to lose the joint-most players out of any Premier League outfit this summer.

Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin leads a gaggle of first-team stars set to leave for nothing, a group that includes Abdoulaye Doucoure, Idrissa Gueye and Ashley Young, while squad players Michael Keane and Seamus Coleman are both also set to miss playing in the new stadium on Merseyside unless new terms can be agreed.

Fulham 6 players

Willian’s return to Fulham on a short-term contract means that he will again depart Craven Cottage at the end of the season as things stand. He leads a lengthy list for Marco Silva’s side, in which the most concerning name to fans will be Raul Jimenez, who has found the net nine times already this season.

Carlos Vinicius is set to leave, but there will also be concern over Adama Traore, Tom Cairney and Kenny Tete, all of whom are set to follow the Brazilian and who have combined for 55 Premier League appearances this season, with their exits representing a potentially massive blow to Silva’s squad depth.

Ipswich Town 3 players

There are bigger concerns in East Anglia than free agents right now, with Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town fighting for their Premier League lives.

However, in the upheaval that will accompany any potential return to the Championship, three players are set to leave for free. That includes 2023 arrival Axel Tuanzebe, though the club hold an option to extend his contract for another year.

The same can be said for defender Cameron Burgess, but Massimo Luongo has no such clause and is set to leave barring a late turnaround, with the midfielder having managed just 170 minutes of Premier League action this season.
