Man Utd fans react to huge update on Dean Henderson’s future

It’s safe to say Dean Henderson has established himself as one of the more impressive goalkeepers the Premier League has to offer.

The 23-year-old has spent the last two campaigns on loan at Sheffield United, and in the Blades’ debut campaign in the top-flight this year, he has helped to form a formidable defence.

They have conceded just 25 goals in their opening 28 games in the Premier League, meaning they have the second-best defensive record in the division, only behind league leaders Liverpool.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

With his loan spell set to end this summer, the 6 foot 2 Henderson may have harboured hopes of challenging David de Gea for the number one spot at Old Trafford.

However, ESPN now claim that whilst Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are “determined” to resist any bids for the goalkeeper, they are looking to get him another loan move.

And after hearing about the update, United fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

A couple of fans didn’t seem to be too impressed with Henderson however, and even called for him to be sold.

Just what does Henderson have to do for United to give him a chance in their first-team?

The logic behind letting him stay at Sheffield United for this season was certainly understandable, given that he would get a whole campaign of Premier League football under his belt.

But surely that would have set him up perfectly to challenge De Gea this upcoming summer? Instead, United may end up risking alienating one of their most talented prospects by refusing to show him a pathway to the senior side.

Meanwhile, Man Utd fans discuss this key aspect about Jadon Sancho’s potential arrival.

West Ham recruiting Eddie Howe would be a sign of their pulling power

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

ExWHUEmployee has reported that Eddie Howe would be interested in joining West Ham United as manager if Manuel Pellegrini was to leave.

What’s the story?

The pressure is truly beginning to mount on Pellegrini, especially so after his West Ham side lost 3-2 against Tottenham Hotspur, going 3-0 down at one stage with what was a miserable performance.

[ad_pod ]

This has led to various managers being linked, with Sean Dyche a popular choice among fans, while Chris Hughton is also interested, according to The Athletic.

Howe has joined them on the list of managers linked with the West Ham job if it is vacated by the Chilean.

Premier League pulling power

There is still no guarantee that Pellegrini is going to be dismissed, however, if the Hammers were to recruit Howe, it would be a sign of their pulling power within the Premier League.

He may be at AFC Bournemouth, who are not the league’s biggest side in terms of stature, but Howe has almost become part of the furniture at Dean Court.

The 41-year-old has taken the Cherries from League Two to the Premier League, where they currently sit 11th in the table.

He has been at the club since 2012, after a brief stint at Burnley that was preceded by another three years with Bournemouth.

Once that is considered, it would likely take a lot to prise him away from the club he has become so synonymous with.

Therefore, it would definitely be a sign that West Ham still have pulling power within the Premier League’s mid-table clubs and lower if they were to successfully recruit him.

In other news, West Ham fans reacted to the reports surrounding a prospective new manager.

Spurs fans back Dele Alli to come good

Tottenham Hotspur fans have backed Dele Alli to get back to his best self as he continues to undergo a poor run of form.

The England international has made seven appearances in all competitions thus far this season and has scored just once, in the 1-1 draw with Watford.

Of course, Spurs have been struggling at the start of the 2019/20 season, winning a mere three games in the league, while they were also thumped 7-2 by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Alli burst onto the scene after his move to Spurs in 2015, scoring 10 goals in the 15/16 season, 22 in 16/17 and 14 in 17/18.

Last season marked a change, however, as he netted just seven times and his struggles have continued into this term.

However, supporters believe that he has the ability to turn it around and have backed him to get back to his best as Mauricio Pochettino’s men look to get back to winning ways.

Leeds should sign Dwight Gayle if they get Qatar investment, says Noel Whelan

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has tipped the club to sign Dwight Gayle should the Whites receive some cash from Qatar, amidst takeover reports.

What did he say?

Reports from The Times claim the Yorkshire giants could get a new investment from Qatari Sports Investment (QSI), as the owners want to see Leeds reach the level of Manchester City.

Whelan believes that should the club increase it’s wealth from the new investors that Marcelo Bielsa should delve into the transfer market in January to help with the club’s bid for promotion, and he says prolific goalscorer Gayle should be on his wishlist.

Whelan told Football Insider: “He talks about new investment if we get promoted this season. What Leeds need is investment not just for the Premier League, but for the January window. He should be looking to get a loan or some cash front-loaded for January. There is no guarantee we are going to go up.

“Do a deal now and and get some money in. It doesn’t have to be a huge amount, just enough to immediately improve the team.

“I’m thinking a loan deal for someone like Dwight Gayle. He’d be perfect for us, a proven striker who could well be available and who has a brilliant record in the Championship.

“I can see him joining. We would just have to match his Newcastle wages, which Leeds probably wouldn’t be able to afford without new investment. That’s the reality.”

Gayle and the Championship: A dream pairing

Should Leeds find themselves with a new windfall, buying in January would be a necessity in order to finally return to the Premier League. Bielsa’s side might be the best defensive side in the Championship, but on the other hand, they have scored just 15 times which puts them on the same amount of goals Luton Town in 18th.

Whilst this keeps Leeds only two points off the top, it has caused a change in form with the club winning once in the last four games. Up top, Bielsa has just Patrick Bamford, Eddie Nketiah and Tyler Roberts to call upon, with the latter playing just 65 minutes of league action. Even the experienced Bamford has netted only four times in the 11 fixtures so far, whilst Nketiah has two Championship goals since joining the club from Arsenal.

Why are Leeds fans the best in the country? Find out in the video below…

As a result, the Whites should do what they can with what they have to sign Gayle – a proven Championship goal machine. The Englishman has 59 goals in 100 appearances in the second tier, as opposed to just 22 goals in 99 outings in the Premier League.

The former Crystal Palace man scored 23 times as he rocketed Newcastle United back to the Premier League in 2016-17, whilst his 23 goals for West Bromwich Albion helped the Baggies into the playoffs last season.

Certain players are just made for the Championship. Gayle’s record suggests he is one of them, and with his superior goalscoring record over Bamford and Nketiah, signing him might be the final piece to the puzzle in their quest to reach the top-flight.

Celtic fans fume at the refereeing on show in their 1-1 draw against Hibernian

[ad_pod ]

Some Celtic fans have taken to Twitter to fume over the referee’s decision not to award their side at least one penalty in the disappointing 1-1 draw against Hibernian.

The draw has allowed Rangers to make up some ground in the title race, and it seems as if some Celtic supporters think one man was the blame for their side dropping points.

Kristoffer Ajer’s own goal in the eighth minute gifted Hibernian an early lead, before Ryan Christie’s 11th goal of the season saw the Bhoys equalise.

It was a moment when Christie was brought down in the penalty area that Neil Lennon cited as one of two incidents in which his side should’ve been awarded a spot kick – Moritz Bauer was also upended in the area, but both claims fell on deaf ears.

One fan said that the referee was “shocking”, while another called him a “no good cheat” – as you can see, they’re not happy with the official’s work.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Keane and Pickford omitted from England squad courtesy of power rankings

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Gareth Southgate announced the England squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Bulgaria, and it included both Michael Keane and Jordan Pickford.

However, power rankings provided by Sky Sports seem to suggest that they were fortunate to sneak in.

The Sky Sports power rankings are based around 35 different statistics, with each position varying in points for certain achievements – for example, a striker receives less for a goal than a defender. The rankings are then presented in a leaderboard based on the number of points a player has earned.

This time around, centre-back Michael Keane has missed out to uncapped players such as Fikayo Tomori, Matthew Lowton and Dan Burn, whilst Southgate’s regular no.1 Jordan Pickford has not made the cut over uncapped keepers Dean Henderson, Aaron Ramsdale, and Three Lions regular Nick Pope.

So far this season, Keane and Pickford have played every minute of Premier League action, which has seen them concede 12 goals in six games – only Newcastle, Watford, Norwich City, and Chelsea have let in more. In the rankings, each goal conceded is worth -600 points, so it is easy to see where England’s no.1 and the defender have gone wrong this season.

Goalkeepers are awarded 350 power ranking points per save they make. Pickford has averaged just 2.4 saves per game compared to Pope’s 3.3, Ramsdale’s 3.7, and Henderson’s 3, which has subsequently helped push the Everton keeper out of the 23-man ranking.

Furthermore, keepers are awarded 100 points per catch they make and 30 per aerial battle they win. Both Pope and Henderson boast 0.7 aerial battles claimed per game, whilst Pickford averages just 0.1 per match. The Everton man is also at the bottom of the list for clearances made with averaging 0.3 each fixture – a successful clearance is worth 50 points.

As for Keane, he already sits below the majority of defenders in the power ranking based on the fact he has conceded 12 goals, which total a score of -7200 for that alone. Elsewhere, Keane has averaged just one tackle per game compared to Tomori’s three per match and James Tarkowski’s 2.1 each fixture – every tackle is worth 75 points.

Also, the likes of Tomori, Aaron Cresswell and Trent Alexander-Arnold have all scored in recent weeks, which awards them each 1900 points plus another 1300 for their strikes coming outside of the penalty box.

The Everton centre-back has also fallen behind on interceptions as of late, with Tomori averaging three per game, compared to Keane’s 1.4, whilst the former Burnley defender has lost all three league games since the last international break, which adds on another -900.

Southampton starlet Jake Vokins could be a future challenger for the left-back role

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

When Matt Targett left Southampton in the summer, the Saints supporters would’ve been forgiven for thinking the squad looked a little light in the left-back department.

As a result of Targett’s £17m move to Aston Villa, Ryan Bertrand was left as the only senior figure on the left side of defence, but it has become apparent that Ralph Hasenhuttl has somewhat of an issue with him.

Summer signing Kevin Danso started the Saints’ outing against Brighton at left-back with Bertrand out injured, although Hasenhuttl later confirmed that he would’ve made that change anyway even if the former Chelsea man was fit.

And then the summer recruit was selected at full-back once again at home to Manchester United, but his afternoon was cut short when he was given his marching orders for two bookable offences.

However, Danso is a natural centre-back, whilst Hasenhuttl also played Pierre-Emile Højbjerg at left-back in the EFL Cup win over Fulham, and praised the Dane for his performance in the role.

In that respect, it seems as if the Austrian boss has some options to replace Bertrand at left-back for now.

However, neither of them are natural figures for the role, but when it eventually comes down to finding a replacement for Bertrand, Southampton could have a potential future challenger for the position in Jake Vokins.

The 19-year-old has been impressing in the Southampton academy for a while now and grabbed two assists from left-back in the recent Under-23 outing against Liverpool, a game which the Merseysiders won 4-3.

The Guardian highlighted Vokins as a player who could soon make the step up at Southampton, whilst the club themselves are seemingly keen to keep him around and develop him having handed the full-back a contract extension just last year.

With Targett no longer on the South Coast and Bertrand seemingly not in Hasenhuttl’s good books, Vokins could potentially be a future challenger for the role if he keeps up the good work.

Leeds fans discuss Kiko Casilla after revealing statistic versus Wigan

[ad_pod ]

It may only be four games into the new season but Kiko Casilla is already having a topsy-turvy campaign.

Following on from his playoff escapades it’s hardly surprising that he is again causing a debate. Against Salford in the League Cup last week he was berated by numerous quarters of the fanbase for his performance.

And his next outing against Wigan caused yet more discussion. The Spaniard kept a clean sheet for his side but rather remarkably completed more passes than every single outfield member of the Latics squad.

He made 15 passes to his teammates but the highest number from a Wigan outfield player was just 13.

It was a stat that got Leeds fans talking as one described it as absolute madness. Another called the 32-year-old stopper a legend.

Casilla was also described as mad by one fan who urged people to get off his back. A further individual joked that he hadn’t scored enough goals.

The former Real Madrid man has started in all four of Leeds’ matches this season, remaining Marcelo Bielsa’s favoured choice after the departure of Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Illan Meslier has since arrived on loan from Lorient but it remains to be seen whether the teenager has the abilities to dislodge him.

Here’s the best of the reaction.
