Nerves ruined my debut – Rankin

Boyd Rankin has admitted nerves made his Test debut a painful experience and revealed he had suffered a back spasm the night before being handed his cap at the SCG

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jan-2014Boyd Rankin has admitted nerves made his Test debut a painful experience and revealed he had suffered a back spasm the night before being handed his cap at the SCG.Rankin, who ended his Ireland career in an aim to play Test cricket, was twice forced to limp off the ground on the opening day and initially there were fears of a hamstring injury but after a scan it was confirmed as cramp. He was able to bowl in the second innings although still struggled and only managed his first Test wicket with his last ball when Peter Siddle top-edged a pull to bring Australia’s second innings to an end.The match was Rankin’s first competitive bowl since the tour match in Alice Springs at the end of November and he believes that could have played a part in his problems. It was put to the ECB during the opening day in Sydney whether there were any injury concerns surrounding Rankin coming into the match because he had been spotted on the ground earlier than his team-mates, but it was explained as just part of his normal routine although it now emerges there was a concern.”I must admit I didn’t sleep that night, with nerves and excitement. It also didn’t help that I had a back spasm and so I had to get it checked out on the morning of the game before getting the all-clear to play,” Rankin wrote in his column for the .”It was at lunchtime that I started getting cramp and I was fighting against it through my second spell. I had no problem running around the outfield but as soon as I landed when bowling the first ball of my third spell it seized up. I wanted it to disappear so badly but there was nothing I could do about it.”I have rarely suffered from cramp in the past, I think the last time was against England at the World Cup in 2007, another big occasion, so I suppose it was down to nerves and tension and, of course, I hadn’t played in a match for five weeks.”My first thought was that I was letting the team down because the other lads had done so well, especially Ben Stokes getting six wickets. So I gave it one more go after tea, but, again, when I landed on bowling I got the same sensation and it was just impossible to keep going, so I spent the rest of the innings in the dressing room.”Although I managed 12 overs’ bowling in the second innings, I never felt 100%. I was still fighting through the cramp and as a result, I didn’t really have any rhythm throughout the game and it showed in terms of my speed which was down on where I normally would be.”Rankin has remained in Australia as part of the one-day squad for the series which begins in Melbourne on Sunday and is desperate to ensure his difficult experience in Sydney is not the end of his Test career”Now that I’ve got a taste of it, I have the urge to work even harder and play a few more,” he said. “The first couldn’t have gone much worse, having to come off with cramp it was a tough few days. I have learnt so much from those three days in terms of what I want to do if I get another chance.”

O jogo

Aggressive Mumbai end title drought

Kept alive by Kieron Pollard’s fighting 60 off 32, the Mumbai Indians bowlers attacked their way to a first IPL title

The Report by Sidharth Monga26-May-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
File photo: Kieron Pollard top-scored against Super Kings once again•BCCIKept alive by Kieron Pollard’s fighting 60 off 32, the Mumbai Indians bowlers attacked their way to a first IPL title. Mumbai were struggling at 52 for 4 in the 10th over, but Pollard batted through the innings to take them 148 even as wickets kept falling as the other end. Lasith Malinga and Mitchell Johnson then were too good for the Chennai Super Kings batsmen, yorking and bouncing them out.Super Kings’ two big Indian batsmen fell to bouncers, their best batsman was done in by a perfect Malinga yorker, and the rest fell under the weight of the pressure and their own conservatism. MS Dhoni came in to bat at No. 7, and Albie Morkel at 8. Twenty20 doesn’t always favour aggressive sides, in that wickets don’t mean as much as they should, but in this match it did.Wickets were there aplenty for Super Kings too. There were three in the first four overs as the ball seamed, and Mohit Sharma and Morkel bowled smartly and steadily. When Dinesh Karthik fell in the 10th over, Super Kings were arguably one big wicket away from killing the game. That one big wicket never came. The first ball Pollard faced he defended away for four. That was sweetly played. He just pushed at a shortish delivery, but the ball scurried along between the bowler and mid-off. He lost Ambati Rayudu after a 48-run fifth-wicket stand, but kept bringing up fours and sixes without taking risks. His countryman, Dwayne Bravo, though, threatened to ruin his plans.Pollard had taken Mumbai to 129 for 6 after 18 overs, and would have been looking for 40 more. A tight Chris Morris over later, Bravo kept Pollard away from the strike through two wickets off the first three balls of the last over. Pollard took the risk fourth ball and ran even though the ball had reached the slip straight on a half-volley. Now Pollard had two balls to do something about the score that read only 136.And do something Pollard did. The first of the two balls was a low full toss and he flicked it for a straight six. Then came a slower ball, which pitched on a length, and Pollard dismissed it out of his presence. Twelve runs taken off the last two balls, Mumbai were reminded by their analyst that they had scored 148 in their first match against Super Kings too. Pollard had scored 57 not out then too. They won by nine back then. This time, though, they would need something special. Malinga, asked to bowl the first over, delivered nothing less than special. A swinging yorker first squeezed under Michael Hussey’s bat. Out came Suresh Raina. In came a backward short leg. Out came an accurate bouncer. Raina fended at it while looking towards third man. Backward short leg took the catch.Super Kings now sent crisis man S Badrinath ahead of the bigger hitters. If consolidation was his brief, Badrinath exceeded it by driving at a wide length ball from Mitchell Johnson and edging it through. Still no Dhoni. Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja didn’t take too long, and Dhoni had to finally come out at 36 for 5 in the seventh over. However, he ran out of batsmen soon with M Vijay falling to a Johnson bouncer and Morkel to a full Pragyan Ojha delivery, and actually had to begin farming the strike and refuse singles with six overs still to go.Most of Dhoni’s 63 off 45 came after the match had been lost, and only gave Mumbai an extended time on the field to celebrate the title even when the match was on.

Dravid praises Sreesanth's response

Rahul Dravid said he was happy to see Sreesanth bounce back during Rajasthan Royals’ six-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab after an expensive spell against Pune Warriors

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Apr-2013Rahul Dravid said he was happy to see Sreesanth bounce back during Rajasthan Royals’ six-wicket win against Kings XI Punjab after an expensive spell against Pune Warriors. Sreesanth picked up the wickets of Kings XI openers – Adam Gilchrist and Mandeep Singh – in his first over and was economical giving away 20 runs in his spell.”You have to realise that in T20, you will have bad games,” Dravid said. “It’s part and parcel of the game. Out of four games, Sreesanth’s had three good games. If 75 per cent of the time in the tournament you have good games, then I’ll take it happily. He did really well today and it was good to see him bounce back from the previous game.”Sreesanth drew consistent movement off the Jaipur pitch that offered help to the seamers and, along with James Faulkner and Siddharth Trivedi, helped Royals to limit Kings XI to 124. The Royals had lost four wickets with 46 needed to win, but an unbeaten stand between Ajinkya Rahane and Sanju Samson took them over the line in the last over.”Chasing 125 was not going to be easy on this surface because it was offering movement,” Dravid said. “All wickets should not be of 170-180 runs. 140-150 run wickets can also have exciting games. We are happy with the wicket and don’t interfere with the job of curator. We need to learn to bat better on such wickets.””[Shane] Watson played beautifully to add quick runs and release some pressure. But we got stuck in the middle with fall of couple of wickets but Ajinkya Rahane stood there till the end to steer us home. Sanju Samson also batted beautifully and has shown a lot of promise. All in all, it was a fine team effort.”He also brushed aside any concerns regarding the form of his batsmen, while stating that Brad Hodge’s position in the batting order would depend on the situation the team faces. “As far as the matter of Hodge batting up the order is concerned I feel he has been very good in accelerating at the end overs,” he said. “If the need arises, he can be promoted up the order. The good is thing is that we now have enough cover and options for all positions and can shuffle to meet the demands of situations.”

Connolly signs for Unicorns in MLC ahead of push for World Cup spot

The allrounder is unlikely to be in contention for the West Indies Test series which overlaps with MLC

Andrew McGlashan17-Apr-2025Cooper Connolly has signed for San Francisco Unicorns in Major League Cricket (MLC) for his first experience of an overseas T20 league.Connolly, the 21-year-old left-handed batter and left-arm spinner, has debuted for Australia across all formats since last September, playing his first Test against Sri Lanka in February.Related

MLC overlaps with Australia’s Test tour of West Indies, but Connolly is unlikely to be in the frame for those matches. The five T20Is, which Connolly could feature in as Australia build towards next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, follow after the conclusion of MLC.It was in T20 that Connolly first shot to prominence when he carried Perth Scorchers to the 2022-23 BBL title in just his fourth match and second innings. He made his T20I debut against Scotland last year although has only played one further game with a thumb injury ruling him out of the home Pakistan series in November. He returned to have an impressive 2024-25 BBL where he scored 351 runs at 50.14 with a strike-rate of 131.46. He was named joint player of the tournament alongside Glenn Maxwell.Unicorns are coached by former Australia allrounder Shane Watson who has been impressed by the early stages of Connolly’s career.”Cooper’s all-round ability is going to be a key asset for the Unicorns this summer,” Watson said. “Although he’s young, he’s shown maturity and adaptability beyond his age; not many players have international experience across both white-ball formats and earned a baggy green at 21.”Connolly could come into contention for next year’s T20 World Cup with Australia likely to give strong consideration to including a left-arm spinner among their options. He was a surprising choice to open the batting in the Champions Trophy semi-final against India last month having been called into the squad as a replacement for Matt Short. He struggled with the bat making 0 from nine balls but held his own with the ball, claiming the wicket of Rohit Sharma and could have had Virat Kohli but for a dropped catch by Glenn Maxwell.A number of Australians will again feature in the MLC, including Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk alongside Connolly at Unicorns, although the Test series in West Indies will impact the availability of anyone involved in those matches.Last season, Steven Smith captain Washington Freedom to the title against a Unicorns side which featured Pat Cummins.

Kamini ends long break in style

Thirush Kamini overcame a nervy start to become the first Indian to score a century in the Women’s World Cup. Her 100 set up India’s match-winning total against WI

Abhishek Purohit in Mumbai31-Jan-2013Thirush Kamini, who became the first Indian to make a hundred in a Women’s World Cup, said she had “too many things running” in her mind when she walked out to open in her first international match in nearly three years. Despite a slow start, she went on to add 175 for the first wicket with Poonam Raut, setting up a match-winning total of 284 for 6 against West Indies.Kamini’s previous match for India was in February 2010, but she calmed whatever nerves there may have been at the start to allow Raut to take charge, before opening up to overtake her opening partner. Mithali Raj, the India captain, had spoken about India’s strong opening combination going into this World Cup, unlike previous editions.Kamini said she had worked on her strokes during her time away from the national team. She had made an unbeaten 95 during the domestic Challenger Trophy in December 2012. “I was coming back from an injury. I had focused a lot on knocking,” Kamini said. “Today, I decided to take it ball by ball. I made a slow start but I knew I could make up later, which I was able to.”It was a perfect start to the tournament for the hosts as they piled on an imposing total after being asked to bat by West Indies, before defending it comfortably. Raj said she was “surprised” at being put in, and would have batted on the flat pitch had she won the toss.Raj believed chasing such a big total was a difficult task but West Indies captain Merissa Aguillera felt it was her batsmen, and not the bowlers who let the side down. Aguillera said with batsmen such as Stefanie Taylor, Deandra Dottin and Shanel Daley, West Indies should have batted much better than being dismissed for 179. Batting seemed to get slightly difficult in the evening as India’s seam bowlers got the ball to move around through the chase, but Aguillera refused to give much weight to that, saying her side should have been able to adapt to the conditions.Dottin gave India a brief scare as she cracked four powerful sixes on her way to 39 off just 16 deliveries. Her cameo lasted a little more than four overs but it was a “dangerous period”, according to Raj. “I am glad she didn’t continue further,” a relieved Raj said. The promoted Jhulan Goswami and Harmanpreet Kaur had earlier played cameos of their own as India kicked on to take 109 off the final 13 overs after the big opening stand. Raj said the team had worked on having a slog and decided to send the two batsmen before her so that they could go after the bowling. With India’s bowlers constantly keeping West Indies under pressure, Raj did not feel the fielding had been tested much and warned that tougher contests lay ahead against sides such as England.

O Palmeiras anunciou nesta quarta-feira a contratação do volante Matheus Fernandes.
