The battle of the Under-19s, and last-over blues

Australian way doesn’t impress Pidge
When Bharat Chipli edged one behind off Glenn McGrath, he stood there and waited for the umpire to make his decision, in the time-honoured Australian way. Steve Davis, Australianhimself, said no, and a snarling McGrath was left to snipe constantly at Chipli until a miscuedpull ended his stay. Even then, McGrath appeared to be saying “not out, not out” to taunt the young batsman.Goswami wins Under-19 spoils
It was a contest within a contest, two of India’s victorious Under-19 team facing off against each other. Sreevats Goswami won it handily enough, taking Pradeep Sangwan for a six and three fours in the over. It was just about the only thing Bangalore savoured on a night when they were once again outclassed.Last-over blues
Bowling himself for one hugely expensive over probably cost Virender Sehwag and Delhi victory in their last game against Kings XI Punjab. This time, he bowled out McGrath and Farveez Maharoof and left the final over to Rajat Bhatia. With Misbah-ul-Haq on strike and in a rampant mood, it wasn’t an inspired gamble. The 24 runs Bhatia conceded at least gave Bangalore something to defend. All we need is just a little patience
Dale Steyn was working up considerable pace in his second over, with Gautam Gambhir not scoring off the first four balls. But just as Bangalore started to dream of a maiden, Gambhir showed off his orange-cap powers with a dazzling straight drive and an elegant push through cover. Are you Jonty in disguise?
Chipli may have done no more than rile McGrath with bat in hand, but at least he could claim the catch of the match, a stunning dive to his left at point to send back Sehwag. The only problem was that Delhi already had 91 on the board by then, with Sehwag careering to 47 from just 19 balls. On the ball
Cameron White has been a major flop with bat in hand, but he does bring some Australian virtues to Bangalore’s fielding. When Gambhir cut one to deep backward point and set off, White’s throw to Goswami was just about perfect. Gambhir didn’t even wait for the umpire, jogging all the way back to the pavilion.

Rain has played havoc with today’s Frizzell County Championship programme, with only limited play possible in just three of the six scheduled games. Between the showers there was time for Craig White to complete a half century and for Durham to force Gloucestershire to follow on.At Headingley, White had just completed his 50 against Hampshire when rain and bad light, which had prevented almost any play in the first two sessions, returned to hold things up again. When play resumed in the final session, White was out for 67 and Yorkshire closed on 207 for five.In Division Two, Gloucestershire did not advance their cause in the limited play possible at Chester-le-Street. 95 for six overnight, they were swiftly mopped up by Durham for 132, with Graeme Bridge taking two wickets for one run. Following on 338 runs behind. the visitors did little better in their second innings. Between delays they reached 44 for two by the close, with Ian Hunter taking both wickets.Just nine overs and three balls were bowled at Trent Bridge, from which Nottinghamshire moved from their overnight 184 for seven to 207 for eight before the rain intervened yet again to end play early for the day. Carl Greenidge trapped Nick Boje lbw for 36 to collect his fifth wicket of the innings for Northants in a game that now seems sure to end in a draw. The third day’s play at The Oval between Surrey and Somerset, at Horsham between Sussex and Leicestershire, and the first day of Essex’s match against Derbyshire at Chelmsford were all abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Fulham handed Harrison Reed transfer boost

Fulham have been handed a huge boost to their hopes of keeping Harrison Reed at Craven Cottage this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Yorkshire Evening Post, who claim that, despite the 26-year-old being heavily linked with Leeds United in recent weeks, the central midfielder is not currently on Victor Orta’s list of summer targets.

Indeed, a report by the Daily Mail earlier this month had claimed Marcelo Bielsa’s side, along with a host of other Premier League clubs, were monitoring the Fulham star ahead of a potential move this summer, however, this does not appear to be the case – regarding Leeds, at least.

Fans will be buzzing

Having highly impressed during his two seasons with Scott Parker’s side thus far, the news that Reed does not look likely to be targeted by Leeds United this summer is sure to have left fans Fulham buzzing.

Indeed, in his first season at the club back in 2019/20, the £9m-rated defensively minded midfielder registered one assist and created one big chance for his teammates over 25 Championship appearances, as well as making an average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.9 tackles and winning 4.5 duels per game.

These metrics saw the £31k-per-week man earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.81, ranking him as the Cottagers’ joint 16th-best performer in the second tier, playing a huge role in the club’s promotion to the Premier League that season.

Upon this promotion, the former England U20 international once again impressed for Parker’s side, registering two assists and creating two big chances for his teammates over 31 Premier League appearances, in addition to making an average of 1.6 interceptions, two tackles and winning four duels per match.

These returns saw the 26-year-old earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.90, ranking him as the club’s 11th-best performer in the top flight of English football, although Reed did not manage to save his side from relegation back to the Championship.

As such, if Fulham were to lose the man who has been dubbed an “immense” player by his former teammate Shane Long, it would undoubtedly reduce the chances of the Cottagers going on to secure an immediate return to the top flight of English football next season.

As the former Southampton gem has proven in his two years in west London that he is now very much an essential part of the Fulham midfield.

Segunda rodada do Paulista tem goleada, polêmica e decepções

MatériaMais Notícias

A segunda rodada do Campeonato Paulista teve goleada, polêmica e surpresa.

Liverpool could sell Kostas Tsimikas

Liverpool are prepared to let Kostas Tsimikas leave the club this summer after he struggled to make an impact last season.

What’s the story?

According to well-known journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano (as reported by the Liverpool Echo), the 25-year-old is deemed surplus to requirements on Merseyside and could depart after a single campaign with the English giants.

Tsimikas joined Jurgen Klopp’s charges in an £11.75 million deal from Greek outfit Olympiakos 12 months ago but found opportunities extremely limited thanks to the performances of Andrew Robertson.

Fans will be buzzing

After struggling with multiple injuries in the first half of the campaign, Tsimikas then found himself firmly behind Robertson upon his return to fitness.

This combination limited the Greece international to just three starts in all competitions throughout 2020/21 and just five minutes of Premier League action.

Although his handful of cameo appearances may not be enough to judge the full-back’s talent, a large section of the Liverpool supporters will be buzzing to hear Tsimikas’ nightmare spell may already be coming to an end.

Romano stated: “Let’s see what happens with Tsimikas. He can leave the club,” on a recent edition of his Here We Go podcast, and the revelation may lead to a boost in the club’s transfer budget for the current window.

With the ongoing pandemic continuing to limit the spending power of teams at every level, selling some fringe players appears to be the logical solution to supplement the coffers.

The likes of Xherdan Shaqiri, Divock Origi and Harry Wilson have been linked with a Liverpool exit as a result, and it seems as though Tsimikas is the latest flop to be put up for sale.

It remains to be seen if any side comes in for the unwanted full-back but the departure of the £7.2 million-rated Tsimikas could allow Klopp more room to manoeuvre in the transfer market over the coming months.

With the versatile and experienced James Milner in his ranks, the German tactician may be comfortable not directly replacing the defender, allowing Director of Football Michael Edwards to focus funds on reinforcements in central midfield and up-front instead.

And, in other news…Edwards could find LFC’s new Salah with swoop for 17-goal gem who has lit up the EUROs

Tottenham offered chance to sign Laporte

According to a report by Gianluca Di Marzio, writing for Grand Hotel Calciomercato, Manchester City are willing to offer Tottenham Hotspur the chance to sign Aymeric Laporte in a two-player-plus-cash swap deal for Harry Kane.

The Lowdown: Kane exit saga…

Ever since Sky Sports broke news of Kane’s desire to leave north London this summer, there have been no shortage of rumours linking clubs to swap deals for the star striker.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, it is highly unlikely clubs can afford to match chairman Daniel Levy’s asking price – which some reports suggest could go as high as around the £200 million mark.

Therefore, swap deals have been touted as a possible route around Levy’s lofty demands.

The Latest: Spurs offered Laporte

According to journalist Di Marzio, writing for his website, suitors Man City are now willing to offer Laporte as well as striker Gabriel Jesus plus cash for Kane.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, it is said that the chairman is standing firm and won’t budge despite Tottenham’s alleged aim to shore up a weakened defence this summer (Alasdair Gold).

It is said that Levy remains ‘not convinced’ by the offer while incoming sporting director Fabio Paratici’s first task is to keep Kane at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.

Chelsea are also said to be ‘very insistent’ on signing Kane but Paratici aims to hold firm.

The Verdict: Tempting…

We believe City offering Spurs a chance to sign Laporte should come as tempting given centre-half has been the subject of much debate over this last year.

Reliable reports suggest that strengthening defence is a priority for Spurs this summer as they scour the market for a ‘leader’.

In that respect, there are few players who could come as more tempting than Laporte.

He has fallen behind Ruben Dias and John Stones in the Man City pecking order this season but the 27-year-old has earned no shortage of praise from manager Pep Guardiola.

Indeed, Guardiola called him ‘the best left central defender in the world’ last year and Laporte has been a crucial player for City in past title-winning campaigns.

Most recently, after his international debut for Spain, Luis Enrique hailed him the £120,000-per-week powerhouse as ‘sensational’ alongside Pau Torres in defence (Marca).

These accolades perhaps point towards a tempting player offer, especially with Jesus plus cash, but you can also understand Levy’s firm stance on Kane given just how important he is for Spurs.

Chelsea’s interest in Adama confirmed

Fabrizio Romano has corroborated a report that Wolves’ Adama Traore is on Chelsea’s radar this summer.

The lowdown

Wolves paid £18million to sign Traore from Middlesbrough ahead of the 2018/19 season and he’s since gone on to rack up 131 appearances for the club.

Last season, he played 41 times in all competitions, scoring three goals and assisting three more.

Traore led the league for successful dribbles per 90 minutes with 4.1, edging out Newcastle United’s Allan Saint-Maximin (via WhoScored).

The Spaniard, who is valued at £27million by Transfermarkt, is about to enter the final two years of his contract at Molineux.

Tim Sherwood, who oversaw Traore at Aston Villa, perhaps best summed up his abilities, calling the winger a ‘fantastic talent’ and describing him as ‘dynamic’ in possession.

The latest

Romano tweeted that Chelsea are rivalling Paris Saint-Germain in the race for Inter Milan’s Achraf Hakimi.

Newly-crowned Serie A champions Inter are said to want €80million for the Moroccan.

If the Parisians were to beat Chelsea to Hakimi’s signature, then Traore could be an alternative for their wing-back position.

The Euro 2020-bound star is on a ‘list’ of options for the Blues, confirmed Romano.

The verdict

From Chelsea’s point of view, Traore would arguably be a more sensible addition than Hakimi.

Reece James is already an excellent option in the right-back or wing-back role, so there’s little point shelling out €80million on another out-and-out wing-back.

Traore would be a strong back-up option from whom Thomas Tuchel would hope to extract more consistency, but he could also excel further up the pitch, as he has done in the past for Wolves.

It could well be the end of road in the Midlands, but one would have to assume the Molineux outfit will have a decent negotiating position with two years still left on his deal.
